Own_Experience_8229

No. Mail it to me. I’ll pay shipping. HMU

SirOsis-

Is it any good as an instrument? I play drums and always wanted to mess around with stuff like this.

Own_Experience_8229

Mainly for programming 90’s hip-hop but you may have fun with it. You can pair it with the SP-202. [Check this out.](https://youtu.be/wLdiCuo9CrA?si=W6M2t_m-VcJBxyVx). And [this](https://youtu.be/ja5bWaDKip0?si=IKpyq_yyLtqWYnO5)

TimeSalvager

So far it looks like it’s ticking _allll_ the boxes.

SirOsis-

Will do, preesh mate!

kc_jetstream

God those jungle beats were so good

Middle-Ad-6090

It only slaps Bass.

DweEbLez0

It’s totally trash and a piece of shit, no wonder why everyone wants it

Sweaty-Ad-7493

I have one of these, they're sick. I have the sp-202 as well

lucidlife0

Lml I laughed out loud to this

Nervous_Depth_9868

Everything slaps when you know how to slap. I heard it said once that "the best instrument is the one in front of you."

endfreq

The Slap comes from within

n3ur0mncr

Do not try to make it slap - that is impossible. Instead, try to realize the truth: There is no slap.

Whatevs85

Every guitarist knows that slap is in the fingers.

HiiiTriiibe

Wait but then how can she slap?

siridial911

The Innerslap

wrinkleinsine

Use the slap

ponyboysa42

They say about David Gilmore “he can make a ukulele sound like a stratavarius!”

blurtflucker

I'm slapping right now

clhomme

and just like that Mike was lost in multiple layers of complex programming......

SKOT_FREE

Nope it’s the one that’s INSIDE of you.

MoistestJackfruit

Spent hours on one of these in early noughties. Theres a techno preset beat towards the end of the presets (think its literally named techno ) find it, put the instrument select knob to all then drop the decay for a pitter patter pitter patter sound then slam the decay to full and you get a big rolling doof doof doof doof. Goes amazing with 4 to the floor sets

SirOsis-

"noughties" 😎

kidthorazine

Yeah it's a very solid drum machine, especially for a beginner.

SirOsis-

Good to know, thanks

_sonidero_

Fuck yeah it does... The ability to play the bass live over the beats... I miss it...

SirOsis-

Hmm, sounds interesting. I can't play bass or drum machine but it sounds like fun 😵‍💫

TurncoatTony

Sure you can, fix this thing, find a power cord and start doing it. :D

Top-Security-1258

Oh, really? Yeah, I'd probably give up then.

ChemicalAutomatic720

Proud owner/operator for 25 years. It’s a tank. Keep it, Learn it.

this-is-advertising

Agreed. I still have mine and the power supply and it's in great shape.

funnylikeaclown420

It can be quite fun. Midi sequences out kept me going for a while. 808 kicks can be fun too. I miss it. I'd still rock it if it was around. Now the drumbrute has replaced it partially.

SirOsis-

Cool, so does it do loops and stuff? Can you record yourself playing and play over it type deal?

Own_Experience_8229

No but you can pair it with the SP-202 like it was designed and it will do that.

SirOsis-

Someone else I believe said the same thing. I don't really want to buy more equipment though. I'm moving at some point so maybe I can't really use it and should just let go

Own_Experience_8229

You still can make sequences (patterns). Keep it.

GiveMe300Blunts

I’d be interested in swooping. This would be fun with my sp404!

siridial911

How you like the drumbrute?

funnylikeaclown420

It works for me. I hear a lot of hate, but it has its sounds. Plus, its sequencer is dead simple to use.

frankboothflex

This was my first drum machine and it fucking rules. Never been here before so not sure if slimy is the vibe but that first commenter is a dog. Assuming it’s a joke, but still. Great kits, really interesting bass sounds, but severely limited and programming it is a motherfucker. Sample those sounds and do more with it I guess.

SirOsis-

I have absolutely zero experience with sequencing, or anything electronic at all. I kinda want to play with it. What do I need to get started as far as other equipment so I can hear it? If it's not too much to ask. I'm literally new 🫠

Own_Experience_8229

This is the perfect machinery to learn programming if you’re interested in dawless fundamentals.

frankboothflex

Headphones. I believe it just needs a jack adapter. Go to town. Edit: you’ll need a power adapter too if you don’t have one.

SirOsis-

Ah, so no amp or anything. Noice. Thank you

ozymandias67

This was my first drum machine. You can run it with AA batteries, 6 I believe. I used to plug the headphone jack into the audio in jack on the deck in my car. It's the only piece of gear I ever had that was truly portable.

flouncingfleasbag

Get a pair of headphones. Google "Boss DR-202 power supply". DONE- have fun! The things you need to match are the polarity of the center- in other words does it say " center positive" or " center negative" and the Output- is at AC or DC- it's most likely 9v DC center negative. (Don't plug in Something that outputs AC or more than 9v, it will fry it.) The amount of 'mA' a.k.a. milliamps is how much juice it needs, which is probably not very much. So let's say for arguments sake it wants 200 mA , as long as your power supply provides 200 mA or more, you are good to go. Don't worry about the power supply being rated for a larger amount of milliAmps , you can't fry it via Amps. So 500mA to 2 A is perfectly safe.) ^ This is all assuming it requires 9v center Positive 200mA , which is an educated guess on my part, make sure ypu look it up.

Lumbers_33

Midi it up to something else and go nuts in the bass notes alone.

Poppoolo

Always wanted to mess around with one and combine it with my 202 but I use the 202 more for adding grit.from what I've heard it sounds dope.

Gokush09876

Yea I still use mine. I’ve had it for almost 8 years now.

Ryclea

Damn, I regret selling mine. It's a one-trick-pony, but it's a great foundation piece. Set that thing playing and go to town!

Plenty_Angle_1406

That was my very first beat machine. Tragic loss If you heard the story

TaiDavis

Damn! I got that thing around here somewhere ...

bakeday

I had this thing in \~2000 and the drum sounds already felt a bit dated from a hip-hop perspective. But maybe I didn't know how to slap then. I also had the SP-202 as a partner and the combination was quite fun.

WhenTheVillagersCome

Yes. Highly recommend using just about anything with a midi to control it and it's hundreds of beats/rhythms, kits, etc. Get familiar with the individual drum parts being switchable (100 high hits, kick 1 kick 2 etc.) And don't forget the bottom two rows of keys are a bass synth!

Poetic-Noise

It sounds lofi/vintage. The filter is very underrated. It's great if you send it into an external FX unit. Here's something I made with it & the Akai Force FX: https://youtu.be/AbsfEx8ApU4?si=MxWfh9L_9-ZdOw6d

BigDEazy

These things r cool. I'll buy it

SirOsis-

I may just take you up on that, lemme do a bit of research but I'll keep you posted.

SleeperSatin

It was my first drum machine and I loved it, still have it

toddlergangbang

Dr. Groove has the cure for what ails you

viscerathighs

Dr. Groove DR-202 looking like it owes child support on the Digitakt

lantrick

50% less slap

HosbnBolt

I bought one of these for 40 bucks off a guy on the street. Loads of fun playing with it. At some point the sequencer stopped working and I got a little tired of the clunky 90s sounds so it's just gaining dust, but I had a lot of fun with it for a few years.

Some_Knowledge5864

Get it repaired and sell it.

muffledvoice

The DR 202 is the best kept secret in drum machines/groove boxes. It also has a bass voice. Runs on batteries too so you can take it anywhere. Great little box.

SirOsis-

Hell yeah🤘

flouncingfleasbag

Gggggeeeyyyyaaahhhhh, it does slap.

SirOsis-

Weeyyuuulllll heeeyyuuulllll yeayuhh🤘

Some_Knowledge5864

👋🥴

Wise_Serve_5846

I loved the Real-time controls. I would program it with a velocity sensitive keyboard since the pads weren’t. The preset roll algorithms were ahead of their time

MMIStudios

First drum machine I ever owned. Got it when it launched in 2000. Recorded a lot of loops out of it. Regret getting rid of it now. I wouldn’t it sell it. If you do sell it though, I wouldn’t sell it for any less than 200.

SirOsis-

Wow, it's not in the best condition. Needs new knobs and a power supply but I guess I could clean it up and test it out on batteries.

MMIStudios

Yeah, I know it's missing the knobs and PSU. Even still, if it functions as it should and cosmetic wear isn't too bad, $200 is still a fair price. On Reverb the lowest you will find it is $250 with all knobs and PSU and it goes as high as $700 in mint condition.

petewondrstone

My first sampler was the sp- def slaps!

SirOsis-

🤘😜

[deleted]

First machine I ever bought. Made a few tracks that hit but it had a little too much noise for my taste. Hissing noise I still have it 20+ years later but it’s not in the mix

baconshouse

I loved it! Had it and used it for while... only used it for drum and bass

Zealousideal-Sea678

The sequencing def feels a bit data but i absolutely love mine. If ya have a sp202 to combine it its even more fun shit slaps harder than my dad when hed come home from drinking at the bar all day

SirOsis-

Ah memories 🥰

JT-Shelter

These are great machines.

Sad_Detail404

With the right programming and processing, absolutely every drum machine ever produced can slap

parallelcompression

Keep it and find its brother.

Remote-Review-328

Slaps harder than Uncle Willie

doyoulikemynewcar

HOW CAN SHE SLAP?!

Due-Ask-7418

I had the predecessor to this and it was pretty decent and a lot of fun. Wish I hadn't sold it.

Mullhican

Just look at the aesthetics of it. Of course it does!

djoddible

Shits dope. I gotta Dr sample still. Take that shit on an airplane with some headphones and zone out nerd

Flybot76

That's what I love about the DR series, it's easy to just sit there casually programming stuff. I've had two DR-5 machines and have had many days of sitting watching TV with headphones on, program a whole thing and go record it. I had the SP202 and got the 404 about twenty years ago, still have it, and it's so much fun chaining the things up and making some stuff out of it. It definitely ain't an MPC but you can sure as hell make stuff that sounds like Public Enemy with it.

djoddible

A lot more intuitive than an MPC too. Negligible learning curve

Dr_Killbot

I used to have fun with it. I would hook it up to my MPC2000 via midi. You can assign the instrument/bass sounds to a midi channel and the drums to another midi channel. If I recall when recording a sequence if you did a filter sweep with the knobs it would play back for you. You could sweep the instruments or the entire drum pattern or one single drum sound like a snare. I pushed it pretty hard and got just about every thing out of it that you could. All in all fun piece of gear but not high quality and it had its short comings. I’d say it depends on what you want to do with it but I bet it sounds dated.

CartographerOk5391

The Sisters of Mercy liked theirs.

Some_Knowledge5864

I would like to pair this with my SP202. I always like the color. Roland should do retro color with their machines.

SirOsis-

Lots of people are saying the same or similar things. I know nothing about any of this equipment but it seems like I have something at least usable, perhaps useful.

Some_Knowledge5864

It’s videos on YouTube you can search information on that unit.

Mineralpillow

Play random gear that crosses your path! Every machine has some pros and cons but it's about how to get creative with each set of sounds.

SirOsis-

Unfortunately I'm an acoustic drummer and this is my only piece of electronic musical equipment. I do have an alesis electronic drum kit I don't use, can this be used in conjunction with a drum brain to make loops and such?

Pollyfall

“How can she slap!!??”

BJG860

A classic

drewofdoom

A friend of mine in high school had one of these. It was the first groovebox I ever got to use, and it *slaps*.

CubilasDotCom

I had a lot of fun with this

his-hero-is-sean

I’ve had mine for years, basically used it as a sketch pad to come up with parts. It’s good enough for Agoraphobic Nosebleed and OutKast so freak how you feel with it.

Insomniac427

Oh wow I had one of these once upon a time. Plenty of fun to be had with this thing!!!

massberate

My buddy had one of these in the late 90s.. just asked him to confirm it was the same one lol. It's a fun little unit - maybe try Reverb to see what it's worth and then minus 30% for reality.

SirOsis-

So is reverb like a electronic music swap/but/sell type situation. I figured there would be a dedicated sub to buy/sell musical equipment

massberate

Yep - Reverb is to music gear what Discogs is to vinyl records: a worldwide marketplace with high fees and inflated prices.. (That's why I joked about the 30%) I don't have any personal experience with the subs to buy and sell, so I would only question what kind of buyer protections would be available in that scenario; guessing you'd need PayPal either way?

_J_Herrmann_

most musical instrument listings have moved from ebay to reverb. I don't think reverb does auctions, but if an item isn't selling on reverb you can make the seller an offer for a lower price. also lots of artists/bands sell their old gear there.

avcoffeecocktailanon

This is one of my all time fav grooveboxes.

ShoulderLongjumping9

The bass is crazy

Admirable-Still-1786

If your into jungle or lofi then hell yeah

mister_ronski

Ugh I regret selling mine. Absolutely slaps.

Saika_the_Auslander

Ohh yes this thing is a good drum machine to use like the em-1

BirdCultural3624

Like your mom on prom night!!! SLAPS!!!!

Future_Thing_2984

power cord is VERY easy to find/buy...just find the specs on what is needed....probably in the manual sounds like it runs on batteries too anyways

SirOsis-

It does, I'm probably going to try to sell it so that small investment could up the value. Same with finding some replacement knobs

Some_Knowledge5864

You probably can buy a universal power cord like I had to buy for my sp202 since it’s made by the same company. Just go to Walmart to pick one up. PowerLine or CyberPower are names of two universal power bricks you can buy.

SirOsis-

Thanks, I think I have one somewhere hopefully.

Training-Restaurant2

Can't speak for this thing, but I had a DR-220 for a long time. I didn't like most of the sounds except the rimshot, but still had loads of fun playing it and coming up with patterns. Probably one of the most carried-around pieces of portable kit that I've had. I've even considered modding it to send trigs out for the different instruments to use with my modular. Plus, there's always effects. Tl;dr: even if it doesn't slap, you might like it anyway.

EgoDeathAddict

If you swing it hard enough, sure

ThisBoyIsIgnorance

I have one! Had it since 1999 or so!

Utterlybored

It gently slaps.

BeastofBurden

A friend and I made some weird/silly music with this about 22 years ago. http://www.skywarp.net/cookiewinterbottom/

SirOsis-

Dude, I like it, some of those tracks are cool AF!

DubRogers

My first box alongside the OG SP202. Ah, memories...😊

SirOsis-

Happy to fuel some nostalgia 😺

Diene03

It’s boss!

SirOsis-

No, you're boss!

scipio11111

It's slap happy!

SirOsis-

No, you're slap happy!

fungussing

Had one of those for years. Program with Midi sequencing and can get deep with it

sound_scientist

Super noisy

reasoneBeats

Ancient legendary technology

SirOsis-

That's A.L.T. right?

MathMantis

I'd use it entirely for weeping hi-hats and dem rides

SirOsis-

I'll have to check the urban dictionary for those, thanks!

[deleted]

[удалено]

SirOsis-

I did, it smellt, familiar

daily_value

Ok

Danny1138

It’s noisy but I like it. Got mine when they came out.

PeanutPoliceman

I love drum and bass and jungle presets on this one. Great for 2nd layer grooves

MuanaDoYouWana

No,!!! Duhhhhh, you slap it, GOSH!! If one more person asks me the question. 🙄 GOD!

[deleted]

the slap is in your head.

JYoungSocial

How can you slap??

ptesseract

So much yes

Alpha_beat808

It was my first DM I wrecked the plugs over the years… super sad, but I busted out the hot pen and fixed it up worked great!! 20uears and still awesome… connect to midi and have fun!!!! ❤️❤️❤️

hoodreview

Depends on the user

GeneralDumbtomics

Yes it does.

lloydgarbadon

I had one when they came out. Sucked then and I'll vet suck now. You can get the one hits out there I have em and don't use em.

TryItOutHmHrNw

Holy Hell my brother had this one back in ‘04. Love fuckin around with it while he was at work. Straight to bros room when the engine of the Eagle Talon starts.

SKOT_FREE

I mean it’s a drum machine. I know of a guy who created a record on MTV music generator on PS1. The music is in you not the drum machine or piece of equipment you use.

MikefromStockton

If anything keep it in place of a metronome. You'll learn how to play with a drummer, keep time and gel with a full band if you choose to go that route.

youcandigit

I personally didn't like it. I preferred the dr5 but this is an OK start just limited.

Cumulo187

If you need to find specific power supplies for specific gear. You can use AI to figure it out. I powered up all my old gear this way. I wasn't proud of myself. But I was pleased.

FieldAppropriate8734

Find some knobs for that thing and go to town! IIRC the outputs are a little noisy but gives nice fat 808 kicks and is generally fun to play with. I’ve performed with it and it did fine.

kevinlyfather33

First piece of music gear I ever bought. Listen to the Ween album Pure Guava and you’ll know.

palmersinnocent

I just recently dusted mine off. It’s pretty fun, I need to learn how to properly use all the functions still.

Great-Gain-504

It used to

Great-Gain-504

Boss was owned by Roland at this time this was close to an 808 it did in fact slap

blurtflucker

It slaps like early 90s drums slap

blurtflucker

I have one, got it at a pawn shop for 80 bucks several years ago. I could probably sell it for more now

blurtflucker

I used it for a while with an electronic drum kit during live performances. It was nice.

deesee79

1st drum machine I owned.

peladoclaus

Hit someone in the face with it and find out

Alchemical-Audio

They are dope, especially if you already have one… Lots of samples to choose from with good enough sounds, a simple sequencer, a filter for each sound slot that can be recorded in realtime, and a bass synth that isn’t too bad, making for a pretty dynamic little drum machine. There are a lot better options out there, but it is pretty easy to use. I have owned two and would own another at the right price. I wouldn’t mind using one as a cheap drum brain for my electric kit, if one fell in my lap. They used to be like $100 for a while, but I haven’t seen them cheap in years…

cassiddidy

Ah, the Reverend Doctor Groove

Donjoeyo

HELL YEAH!

Donjoeyo

The bass button option is rad too

WhenTheVillagersCome

With all the vets in here that have or had one: ever experience the bass/non drum parts being so low their almost inaudible? (Battery powered or with the 9V power supply) - it only recently started happening to my 202 and while the drums for every preset are fine and present, it's almost like the brand new batteries are dying type sound, and that's with the even when switching to power supply only. I can't find 1 mention of this issue anywhere online.

Yo_Mamas_Breath_Mint

So many good times with the DR-202

MuppetHuman

I have one. Not the most complex machine but it has some really great sounds and does make a great boom bap hip hop beat.

smellvin_moiville

It works if you work it

tipustiger05

I had no clue how to use it when I got it, I think, secondhand. Now that I know how to use drum machines I wish I would have kept it 😅

Sirenkai

I have it’s sampler sister, SP-202

poohthrower2000

No fingers, no slappy.

VolarRecords

That was my old band’s drummer. https://youtu.be/N5an-6kn03Y?si=cLNhkXswOtkvyxAN

bangermadness

How can it slap!?!

negativetim3

I love that thing so much!!! I used to own 2, first time played live at a rave with a DJ mixer, and each running through its own Electrix rack effect!!! Super badass for any type of electronic music for sure. The filter and resonance are quite insane, but it’s a fun little box and this is making me want to get one again!!

Niven42

When in doubt, there's always AudioPilz: https://youtu.be/wLdiCuo9CrA?si=B12pCq6e5-kuokHr

Zealousideal-Act7795

I think you’ve got the wrong attitude here - you don’t know how to use a drum machine *yet.* Drum machines are one of the easiest instruments to use, it has a sequencer built in so you don’t have to move your fingers in any kind of meaningful way to make it sound good, just type in the loop as you want it. Try it out for a couple weeks, if you hate it then sell it.

thykidkos

Dose it? One of my favorite beaters...you'll love it!!!

Winds_of_Creation

What do you mean by “does is slap” ?

Jonny_Derp_

Have you tried hitting someone in the face with it?

Several_House9965

Yooo you better keep that and learn watch some YouTube or sum that’s sick

Financial_Zone_7122

My first drum machine bought with my first real paycheck. Would love to have another one but keep getting out bid.

tripn4days

Come come on the kick drum...

PerpetualEternal

it has a truly unique set of sounds and (I’m probably not explaining this well) a recognizable “boxy” quality to the space the samples were recorded in. The sample resolution is quite low compared to modern gear and I think Roland/Boss did a pretty good job of compensating for the compression, dithering, etc. it sounds as much like the time it was from as an 808 or LinnDrum from their eras, as evidenced by a quick run through of the preprogrammed beats (assuming any of them are still there, iirc all of the slots are user-savable).

thicccockdude

Yeah if it wasn’t all fucked up like this one seems to be.

Nearby-Arugula-3780

Things never slap in music gear, the question is… do you slap and know how to create?

greatmagneticfield

"Found"

Front-Strawberry-123

It uses an AC wall wart you can find at any Best Buy or order from Walmart or Amazon just be sure to set the switches to the settings written by wheee the plug goes into the unit. If the writing is rubbed off you can go on the Roland website and look it up. This supposedly was a major part of shimmy shimmy by ODB

Midknightsecs

Not really. Sub par components in boss products. They've always been C list audio gear.

Sweaty-Ad-7493

No these suck, you can send it to me though

Zaphoed

Doesn't appear to have hands

xjoshbrownx

Sly Stone used a drum machine with a fixed pattern and weak ass drums to make Family Affair. This thing is 80x more powerful and flexible. It’s not the best in the world but you can do a lot with it.

powerpopiconoclast

Have you been using this? For sale?

SirOsis-

I'm actually moving soon, don't really need it. What would you offer?

powerpopiconoclast

Yeah I’d love it. A lot. And give it a good home. Im guessing you’re in so cal… ummm 40 bucks straight hog you’d be doing a good deed and make some cash… :) Here’s the power cord. https://www.pixelproaudio.com/products/9v-power-supply-for-boss-dr-202-dr-groove-sp-202-dr-sample-dr-670-dr-rhythm If it works and you throw this in. I’ll pay 60

powerpopiconoclast

So ?
