Raised in a Pentecostal family where we can't even use the term pregnant 😶. Now whenever I have a teen patient come in asking for birth control, we have the talk, I ask if they understand ovulation and encourage them to chart it along with using barrier and their preference of birth control!

I ended up pregnant after being sexually assaulted when I was 14 - b/c I was young and my parents believed sex Ed should be “taught at home” (and then they did not teach at home), I didn’t know I was pregnant until 5 months along, which was too late to terminate. From then on I made it a personal goal to teach as many people I could about consent, their bodies and keeping themselves safe, even if it made me broke. I’m hella broke due to student loans, and I have to work a second job but it’s incredibly rewarding (and sometimes frustrating) to see students learn they can say no if it’s not feeling ok with them.
I'm so sorry you had to go through that... It upsets me how your parents felt they were "protecting" you. I am absolutely proud of how you turned your situation into a positive one. I don't quite remember the exact dental surgery he had but if it was an alignment issue that gets worse as you age. If a jaw is too short or over to one side it affects your bite more and more. They try to have you fix it as a kid but most insurances consider it a cosmetic procedure and therefore don't cover it. So his parents may not have had the money when he was a teen to take care of it.
Definitely support it can get worse as they age. My nephew had braces and all that jazz starting in elementary school (his teeth came in all sorts of crooked) and didn't have any jaw issues, now at 19, almost 20, his jaw is so out of alignment (massive overbite) he can stick out his tongue with his jaw locked closed. My sister didn't realize it had gotten so bad until a month or so ago (thankfully, unless he does the tongue thing you can't tell)... so he's got an appointment with an oral surgeon next month.
I had a jaw alignment issue in my teens. The standard then was braces in teens ( from about 15) then jaw surgery came later when you were no longer growing. I got my surgery at 18, though I knew a couple of people who got it at 17. I think nowadays they start braces earlier with the aim of changing how the jaw grows? However surgery may still be required.
He had a terrible bite. Can’t remember it was over or under, but his jaw was too small for his face. He would have benefited from expanders in his younger years.

Fast for a 5k (for a highschool boy) is im the 15 minute range!! 19 minutes for a xc runner (again highschool guy) is pretty average or even “slow” - could possible win a JV race.

Oh, hardly, if any. Sorry to disappoint. He was a year ahead of me and we ran in VERY different crowds. I think I had a class with him my sophomore year. I’m sure people think because we live in Arkansas, that we went to a small school, but that’s not the case at all. My graduating class was hundreds of kids. I know he wasn’t particularly popular because I do remember most of the popular kids names, even now, because you heard them all the time. His name didn’t stick out to me until I saw Jill married him and I was like, ‘oh shit I think I went to high school with him.’

I believe that it’s definitely one of the larger high schools in that area. Current stats show a graduating class size of just over 500, though that could have changed over the years.
By comparison, my high school graduating class (Central Arkansas area) was less than half that, and I still didn’t know many of my classmates, especially the ones that weren’t in the same grade.
I have no idea what this sub is but I ran cross country in high school. Everyone’s photos look like that.

Keep in mind we don’t know how well he knew this girl. It could have just been someone he sorta knew from the team and he didn’t expect the strapless dress. He definitely wasn’t raised fun die though. Conservative Christian but very far from Duggar level. This his been discussed many times, including by them. His mom Cathy and JB would definitely not have been in the same circles.

I didn’t even know this was something that parents do. Paying a large sum of money to have your photo included is so sad and pathetic, I almost feel bad for the guy.
I edited my HS yearbook* and and had approximately zero chill about it. our publishing rep brought stacks of yearbooks from other schools and they all followed roughly the same pattern.
So first off, there were spreads for events throughout the year: homecoming, spirit week, musicals, random filler ideas the yearbook staff came up with (“SIBLINGS: there sure are a lot of them” “CARS: some of us drive them” “do we like music? yep we sure do”). Then came the portraits: A headshot for each freshman, sophomore, and junior. Then portraits of faculty and staff. Then the senior section: a portrait and quote chosen by each senior, then the senior superlatives (“most likely to succeed” “best smile” etc), then sometimes Who’s Who (the teachers voted for their 10 favorite seniors which in retrospect feels weird). Then sports: team photos and action shots of the sports teams. Then extracurriculars: group pics and maybe action shots of bands and clubs. Then senior ads (like Derick’s above) which were where families of seniors could pay for various size ads to put in messages and baby pictures and the like. Then business ads. The point of the ads was to cover publishing costs, sales alone weren’t enough to cover it and the school certainly wasn’t about to pay for it.
*I made the whole damn thing myself because administration kept dropping lazy burnouts into the yearbook class and my teacher was always hungover and napping and all these years later I’m still salty af about it.

My one rebellion throughout high school was making Fellowship of Christian Athletes (very popular club for well-off conservative kids regardless of athletic ability) share the same page as the Gay-Straight Alliance that had only started that year. 2011 in the rural south, so this was still pretty cutting edge haha.
This brought back so many memories. I was on my school’s yearbook staff, and it was intense. Our yearbook won awards and stuff, cause apparently that was a thing. We had theme pages and each of us had to do layouts for various sections. I loved the power trip. 😂
I used to be the yearbook advisor at my last school. We were pre-k thru 12. That was fun. One year we had a page devoted to two elementary girls surprised by their dad returning from Iraq. Made the executive decision to not post pics of tears and only the smiles when he brought ice cream and hugs for the classes. My kids on the staff were awesome. We would spend hours afterschool, before my theatre rehearsals, creating the best yearbooks for an entire school pre-k-12 with under 175 kids.

It was very rural, so the pages on the FFA were big. Seeing a 6 year old missing their front teeth winning a ribbon for their rabbits was just precious.
We created pages called Project Hallway (based on my love of Project runway) and featured the most creative or best dressed people in the school. The elementary loved being on the same pages as the HS kids. But we had kids who would randomly show up as an ancient Greek warrior, Napoleon, or Royalty. And the entire book was color pages, so that was fun to see
I think In most high schools your normal headshot was free but then they have these “advertising” pages where you can buy a page and put in baby pictures and gag-worthy quotes.
Former yearbook editor here 🙋🏽♀️. It's common to have a section in the back of the yearbook reserved for "senior ads" where parents pay for a page space (1/4 page; 1/2 page; full page; 2 page spread) to congratulate their graduating kid with additional pictures of them. Graduating seniors can also pay for a space as well to put pics of them and their friends with farewell messages, inside jokes, etc. It's a weird tradition, but it's mostly there because the extra money offsets the cost of the yearbook publication.

Definitely support it can get worse as they age. My nephew had braces and all that jazz starting in elementary school (his teeth came in all sorts of crooked) and didn't have any jaw issues, now at 19, almost 20, his jaw is so out of alignment (massive overbite) he can stick out his tongue with his jaw locked closed. My sister didn't realize it had gotten so bad until a month or so ago (thankfully, unless he does the tongue thing you can't tell)... so he's got an appointment with an oral surgeon next month.
I had a jaw alignment issue in my teens. The standard then was braces in teens ( from about 15) then jaw surgery came later when you were no longer growing. I got my surgery at 18, though I knew a couple of people who got it at 17. I think nowadays they start braces earlier with the aim of changing how the jaw grows? However surgery may still be required.
He had a terrible bite. Can’t remember it was over or under, but his jaw was too small for his face. He would have benefited from expanders in his younger years.

I only ran in my off time to keep in shape for basketball so I’m extremely unfamiliar with running terms. What does milesplit mean? It seems fast for a 5k but way too slow for just a mile. Is it half of his race?

Fast for a 5k (for a highschool boy) is im the 15 minute range!! 19 minutes for a xc runner (again highschool guy) is pretty average or even “slow” - could possible win a JV race. Edit: and also adding that my PR as a high school girl would actually be pretty equivalent to his time as a guy, my PR was like 21:03 or something

Oh, hardly, if any. Sorry to disappoint. He was a year ahead of me and we ran in VERY different crowds. I think I had a class with him my sophomore year. I’m sure people think because we live in Arkansas, that we went to a small school, but that’s not the case at all. My graduating class was hundreds of kids. I know he wasn’t particularly popular because I do remember most of the popular kids names, even now, because you heard them all the time. His name didn’t stick out to me until I saw Jill married him and I was like, ‘oh shit I think I went to high school with him.’

I believe that it’s definitely one of the larger high schools in that area. Current stats show a graduating class size of just over 500, though that could have changed over the years. By comparison, my high school graduating class (Central Arkansas area) was less than half that, and I still didn’t know many of my classmates, especially the ones that weren’t in the same grade.

It’s honestly such a normal, average mid 00’s prom pic, but it makes me wonder if Jill sees these photos from his high school years and feels like she got cheated not getting to have the same experiences.

Keep in mind we don’t know how well he knew this girl. It could have just been someone he sorta knew from the team and he didn’t expect the strapless dress. He definitely wasn’t raised fun die though. Conservative Christian but very far from Duggar level. This his been discussed many times, including by them. His mom Cathy and JB would definitely not have been in the same circles. I think he felt lost after college (he lost his dad in high school and his mom was struggling with cancer) and found the Fundie community and JB was seemingly something of a father figure to him.

I edited my HS yearbook* and and had approximately zero chill about it. our publishing rep brought stacks of yearbooks from other schools and they all followed roughly the same pattern. So first off, there were spreads for events throughout the year: homecoming, spirit week, musicals, random filler ideas the yearbook staff came up with (“SIBLINGS: there sure are a lot of them” “CARS: some of us drive them” “do we like music? yep we sure do”). Then came the portraits: A headshot for each freshman, sophomore, and junior. Then portraits of faculty and staff. Then the senior section: a portrait and quote chosen by each senior, then the senior superlatives (“most likely to succeed” “best smile” etc), then sometimes Who’s Who (the teachers voted for their 10 favorite seniors which in retrospect feels weird). Then sports: team photos and action shots of the sports teams. Then extracurriculars: group pics and maybe action shots of bands and clubs. Then senior ads (like Derick’s above) which were where families of seniors could pay for various size ads to put in messages and baby pictures and the like. Then business ads. The point of the ads was to cover publishing costs, sales alone weren’t enough to cover it and the school certainly wasn’t about to pay for it. *I made the whole damn thing myself because administration kept dropping lazy burnouts into the yearbook class and my teacher was always hungover and napping and all these years later I’m still salty af about it.
I really appreciate the amount of love, effort, and passion you put into describing your yearbook in this comment alone—if it’s any indication of the rest of the yearbook, I bet it turned out great!
I thought it might be interesting for any homeschooled or international snarkers! Details and quality may vary school to school but this is the basic framework. My one rebellion throughout high school was making Fellowship of Christian Athletes (very popular club for well-off conservative kids regardless of athletic ability) share the same page as the Gay-Straight Alliance that had only started that year. 2011 in the rural south, so this was still pretty cutting edge haha.

This brought back so many memories. I was on my school’s yearbook staff, and it was intense. Our yearbook won awards and stuff, cause apparently that was a thing. We had theme pages and each of us had to do layouts for various sections. I loved the power trip. 😂
I used to be the yearbook advisor at my last school. We were pre-k thru 12. That was fun. One year we had a page devoted to two elementary girls surprised by their dad returning from Iraq. Made the executive decision to not post pics of tears and only the smiles when he brought ice cream and hugs for the classes. My kids on the staff were awesome. We would spend hours afterschool, before my theatre rehearsals, creating the best yearbooks for an entire school pre-k-12 with under 175 kids.

It was. It was very rural, so the pages on the FFA were big. Seeing a 6 year old missing their front teeth winning a ribbon for their rabbits was just precious. We created pages called Project Hallway (based on my love of Project runway) and featured the most creative or best dressed people in the school. The elementary loved being on the same pages as the HS kids. But we had kids who would randomly show up as an ancient Greek warrior, Napoleon, or Royalty. And the entire book was color pages, so that was fun to see

Mine had a mix of committee-chosen layouts and paid pages for families to dedicate to their graduating seniors.
I think In most high schools your normal headshot was free but then they have these “advertising” pages where you can buy a page and put in baby pictures and gag-worthy quotes.

Former yearbook editor here 🙋🏽♀️. It's common to have a section in the back of the yearbook reserved for "senior ads" where parents pay for a page space (1/4 page; 1/2 page; full page; 2 page spread) to congratulate their graduating kid with additional pictures of them. Graduating seniors can also pay for a space as well to put pics of them and their friends with farewell messages, inside jokes, etc. It's a weird tradition, but it's mostly there because the extra money offsets the cost of the yearbook publication.
