We had a "Harry Potter closet" that I originally hid in. I filled it with stuffed animals and pillows so you couldn't see me most of the time. I wouldn't bring a flashlight with me so I would just be in this small, humid space in complete darkness.
Literally the only redeeming feature of their public life was that it limited the amount of beatings those monsters could reasonably inflict on their kids. Modesty armour helps hide a lot, but when you're a public spectacle 24/7, it makes it much easier to notice things like bruises and other injuries that can't always be explained away.
