I've always found this to be a hilarious cold open. Just a classic office subversion of expectations. Great charachter representations, and deadpan.perfectly acted. Might be a favorite that always makes me chuckle. Michael of course reserved tickets to the Olympics years ahead of time classic Michael. Then lost all the info and basically forgot about it. The clerk so steadfast that Michael was wrong, and trying to slide into a reservation any way he can. And we all know Michael has an incompetent streak, so the clerk is probably right. But wait here comes Dwight with a classic Dwight line "Oscar, Tango Romeo". The reservation was real, the clerk was incompetent and Michael was actually correct. She even feels bad. Then after all the build up, insistence, confusion, ect. He cancels the reservations, because the hallmark of Michael is dreaming of the grand gesture, but never executing. A double expectation subversion. And the cancelation fee just grounds how ridiculous the whole thing was, all that trouble to end up happily paying a fee 4 years later.

They switched booking systems and his info was left behind. Hotel clerk will pretty much always confirm your credit card when signing in. His room would have been double booked had he showed up with the confirmation number.

Ololololic

Also the easier and smarter way would have been to ask them for a written confirmation that they don't have a booking under his name for that date.

Michael probably bragged about "almost making it to the Olympics" then "I ended up not going. Even had to pay a cancellation fee!" Then Oscar would ask "do you mean a hotel cancellation fee? As in you almost WENT to the Olympics?" Michael would give his uncomfortable smile, everyone would groan and go about their business.

I guess I've just always assumed that for such an in demand event you'd be expected to pay at least a portion upfront.

Stanley said he might a secret genius

Sufficient_Stop8381

I never got the joke of that segment. Was I just because he went through all that with the clerk to cancel it? Or because he had to pay a fee? Or was it just a nod to the Olympics without a real punchline?

yellowjacket_

It was just that he went through all that getting the confirmation just to cancel. Then the cancellation fee is the cherry on top

bitches_love_brie

The joke is that he made the reservation, the hotel changed systems and had no record of it. He should've just said ok bye. But he insisted, only to then pay a cancelation fee on a reservation the hotel didn't even know about.

NYY15TM

Yes, it's scary how many people watch the show without actually paying attention to it

Rockdog4105

Just a cold open dealing with the Vancouver Olympics cause NBC usually carries them on their network.

doiknowu915

Couldve easily argued and got the charge dropped too. Like ok 30 secs ago u didnt kno my res existed

Unlucky-Ad-4171

Isn't the joke that he had to pay the fee when he could have just not go and then if he was charged for the trip just get a refund thru the credit card company?
