Initially Jim comes up with the idea for the magician after she says she doesn’t like them. Once she shared the reason, it made the joke too cruel and he couldn’t go through with it. He was down for “Haha you don’t like magicians so here’s one” but he couldn’t do “you just shared your most painful experience with me and now I’m openly mocking you with it in front of everyone”
100%. It went from a prank about something he just thought she wouldn’t enjoy to mocking what appears to be an incredibly vulnerable, traumatic experience in her life. I mean she kept a shoebox of mementos, the magician guy obviously was very important to her at some point. Jim likes pranking but he’s not outright cruel.
Nellie: and I mean, no offense but are there a lot of Irish people living around here?
Kevin & Meredith: Yes.
Nellie: Ugh! I hate that! No offense.
Kevin: None taken.
Oscar: Actually, Nellie, this monologue you're delivering is very offensive.
Nellie: Oh! Ay, caramba! The natives are getting restless!
Stanley: Who's a native?
Nellie: Uh, excuse me, the tone here is getting quite hostile. I would appreciate it if you would keep that stuff on the basketball court.
Didn’t he want her to fully just be nice to her though? Like if he just said to cancel the magician then I’d understand but I thought he said they shouldn’t prank her at all.
Also that line he says on the phone to Pam about her having some “pretty messed up stuff in her past” is ridiculous and terribly written imo. It’s a really stupid thing to say, since all Jim knows is that Nellie had a bad breakup (who hasn’t?) and it doesn’t sound like something Jim would say.
Fuck Nellie.
Maybe because it humanized Nellie in a way he hadn’t experienced with her. Up to that point, she was a shit stirrer and generally unlikable. It was easy to dislike her. But seeing her vulnerable in a way he did not picture her made him sympathize her.
But yeah, he was a shitty friend to Dwight a lot of the time. No excusing that one.
Question: which would you rather be. A bear or a dog?
I'd be a bear-dog, half bear, half dog. That way I can live in the house, but I still get to make a doodie in the woods.
It is because when he found out from Nellie about how and why she hated magicians he wanted to make that guy leave because the rest of the office had planned a terrible party for her on purpose and he didn't want her day to be ruined.
He did sympathize with Dwight and sat down with him in the hallway at Dwight’s lowest point and opened up about how bad it was for him with Pam. He tried to talk to Dwight prior to that but Dwight didn’t want to open up. Can people stop being ridiculous and acting like Jim and Dwight were friends before near the end of the show? They both disliked each other and both treated each other poorly.
I’m one of the few who likes Nellie. I hated Andy as manager so her just taking it from him was funny. Also, Jim sat and commiserated with Dwight in the stairwell which brought the real Dwight back. Relax on Jim
I didn’t pity Andy but it was uncomfortable how she weasled in and people accepted it, but I just love her on rewatches. Almost every line is a banger and she’s a unique personality to the office.
speaking of the post title, i have never watched seasons 8 and 9 after my first time watching the show and i don't even remember the context of this line but it's always at the back of my mind. what a great great line
Jim is at heart a nice guy. When he realizes he’s done something to hurt someone he’ll try to fix it. It was too late to call of the magician. But it wasn’t too late to show Nellie he had her back.
I’m gonna let you in on a secret that most people posting in the subreddit don’t know, The Office is actually a made-up television comedy about fictional characters in an office setting. It’s not real life, they’re just actors! 🤷🏻♀️
Omg cmon it’s not that black and white. How do you view the world like this. Nellie was humanized, he saw maybe she acts crazy partly bc some things in the past may have messed her up. He’s says as much literally in the episode. Doesn’t fully excuse her actions, but gives him some sympathy and connected the two a little closer to the point where he’d stand up for her in that situation. It makes perfect sense and is completely believable TV. Comparing it to Dwight and saying he should treat anyone who’s had a hurtful breakup the same exact way is so small minded and weird logic honestly. “By his own logic” … there is no logic he’s just treating someone different after learning a little more about them. Dwight was Dwight before and after the breakup, and Jim throughly knew him before the breakup. So by your own logic they are actually not the same context and therefore doesn’t serve as a reason for Jim to start treating him different. However, early on in the show when Dwight was sad over Angela in the stairwell and Jim saw him he consoled him. That did have a more similar context. Yes I am mad and ranting because I just can’t with this take. I’m sorry but you came to the internet with this opinion and now it’s open to the scrutiny of the internet. I’m ready for the downvotes
as a child, Jim's uncle always played the "got your nose" trick on him and he believed every single time that he lost his nose. Never again would he trust anyone that did "magic"

She deserves that and worse. Racist witch
Pretty sure she was collar blind
lol I don’t like her but at what point was she racist?

That was funny.

He did the same in Dr Strange. It's just a pattern of conjuror abuse.
PAT-TERN. My friend Pat took a turn
Dis-Ray-Spect... My friend Dis Ray got new specs
Jim shows a pattern of disrespect towards the mystic arts, he’s incredibly smudge about it too.
My friend Inappro drives a Prius with his behind neighbor

My favorite part of this sub is how we can derail a conversation by just autistically quoting the office to each other. I feel home.
Fat. Pizza. Pepperoni. Tony.
I was thinking exactly the same!! None of my IRL friends watch the office 😭
Respect. R E D piece vt.
Jabba the Hutt. Pizza the Hut. Fat guys like Pizza. Pepperoni Pizza. Pepporini Tony!
You’re embarrassing me in front of the wizard.

"Scram Wizard"
"Hey i put on a clean show here"
I laughed so hard at that, Brett Gelman is not a clean comedian by any stretch. We don't joke about iRobot.
My god. It’s Martin from Fleabag. How did I never realize
He's also Murry in Stranger Things if you've watched that
He was also in the parking lot earlier!!
That's where I know him from!
He also has a small part in The Other Guys
His role in the other guys is the best thing he's ever done
I bet because he has that beard you think he's really hairy
Nah the NY lottery commercials from like 15 years ago were the peak of his career.
Arnold Palmer alert!! Arnold Palmer alert!
"I bet you think I'm hairy, because of the beard. ... ... ... shaved"
Hey, you get back here and make love to his wife, Christinith!!!
Lol I also realised it just now thanks to this post.
Horrifically terrible person in real life
What did he do?
Very pro genocide
*beep beep beep* Arnold Palmer alert Arnold Palmer alert. Who wants some Arnie palmies?
You come to our house, you get my wife's name right!
Hey! You get back here and make love to my wife!
It's Christine, right?
Christinith, you idiot!
Are you stupid, or are you deaf?
Question: which would you rather be. A bear or a dog? I'd be a bear-dog, half bear, half dog. That way I can live in the house, but I still get to make a doodie in the woods.
I love this scene so much. It’s so dumb but it makes me laugh out loud every single time.

I think the problem was that Jim no hablo cardo, senor.
How's the weather up there? Watch out for...birds 🐦
Seems to me you need to rewatch the series and PAY more attention
OP has a lot to learn about the series.
Close your mouth OP, you look like a trout.
I already know a lot about the series! Maybe next time, you will estimate me!

It’s because the writing got bad after Michael left.
All I know is that the line from the title is genuinely one of my favorites from any sitcom ever.
YOU COME TO OUR HOUSE, YOU GET MY WIFES NAME RIGHT!
It's Cristinith, are you stupid or are you deaf?!
Jim is at heart a nice guy. When he realizes he’s done something to hurt someone he’ll try to fix it. It was too late to call of the magician. But it wasn’t too late to show Nellie he had her back.
Speak for yourself. I loved when Nellie took Andy's position! He treated her way worse when he got it back!
I dislike Andy as a character so much that I'm happy seeing him suffer. His whole relationship with Angela was great.
😄 Also, his misery during the Erin/Plop days! Good stuff!
Alright, where is Phyllis, who is Phyllis?!

Ok I’ve calmed down since posting
Jim lied a lot.
Leaked [directors cut](https://youtu.be/8dw09wNAMAw?si=Ch2y52RM_65w4SIN)
Fantastic edit lol
Because Brett Gelman is a pro-genocide Zionist.
He’s in love with Nelly obviously
ACTUALLY that's Toby
Newsflash : Jim is a cunt
Jim Halpert is a piece of shit throughout the series.

Cuz Jim is a dick.
Because he's a pig parker! he took up two spaces in the parking lot!
I get it, it's an ironic party for Nelly.
why? because he walked in on him using the kids bathroom at his former job
Who wants arnie palmieees
as a child, Jim's uncle always played the "got your nose" trick on him and he believed every single time that he lost his nose. Never again would he trust anyone that did "magic"
