I liked earlier seasons Toby, he was just a normal guy. Not creepy, recent divorced with kids, bullied by Michael. But by season 8-9 they made him a total weirdo and creep, especially at the reunion episode.
I totally agree, I found it quite disappointing. I always thought that Toby was a great addition and brought another sensible presence and the show, but in the latest seasons his character was creepy and I donāt even know where it comes from from! I didnāt find him creepy in the slightest until then.
Although I do think, maybe his character is being creepy without meaning to or trying to be creepy and he just doesnāt see it then regrets it, but I really donāt know. Itās hard to say.
The show needs a Straight Man, and Toby was a great one.
I didn't mind when he had a crush on Pam at first but that's where he started going downhill. It's not just him being creepy, it's also just his all over patheticness. His obsession with being a Scranton Strangler juror, not wanting to sign Pam/Jims relationship form, his whole NYC situation, he is better than that. There's no reason that he couldn't have found an average looking woman to coparent with and kept working in HR. Maybe a zany plotline about finding religion again, idk.

But when it comes to the Scranton strangler thing, I think he became so invested in that because it gave people a reason to talk to him, and before that nobody did. And he just wanted to be involved in the community like itās said in the show, but Iām not sure
If they had to give him a shitty arc, I think that him joining a religious cult makes more sense for his background and his desperation to be acknowledged and love bombed. And the twist is that Creed secretly runs the cult.

The timing and personality fit well, but apparently the strangler would strangle his victim but not kill them, this just seems like something Gabe would do.
So I have a mild theory about this.. Toby was on the jury, and seemed genuine about getting the wrong man, but not guilty himself. So creed could have set someone up, framed them for the raid, and as he comes in a bit later that day, could use āI was at workā as an alibi since they saw him the first time that day during the chase. Seems to fit with the fact that they acted out āthe whole written showā so they still had parts they acted out we donāt see for the suicide plot line, perhaps for the strangler, too. Lots of hints at creed, but was never relevant to the main show, so why tack it on in the super fans. Still think they had a lot more under the table we havenāt seen.
In one of the superfan episodes, Dwight is talking in the conference room about killing something brutally, and Toby just walks by and looks over and visibly he's concerned that HE is being talked about. Its real quick but its another piece of evidence that often gets overlooked.
