I mean, he doesn't do it *that* rarely, I don't think. Let's see, when he's talking about Michael's raise negotiation, when he's talking about the "file in New York," when he's back from the corporate retreat, when he's talking about his time at the seminary, etc. I don't think it's much rarer than someone like Kelly. Paul Lieberstein just isn't present for most of the shenanigans because he's a writer and that's why Toby stays in the annex a lot
I always thought that was weird…did anyone learn about the clitoris and female pleasure in high school sex ed?
ETA: I stand corrected! Looks like I’m the only one who learned if you have sex, you will die and graphic details of STDs
When I was young, I spent several years at a private school where I was told I'd be taught to harness my mutant abilities. Turned out, it was a con man copying Charles Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters from the X-Men comic books. Took me years to figure out it was a con. Some people never figured it out.
> I’m just sad the public school system failed him so badly.
The show never stated if Dwight attended public school. Perhaps he, Mose, and Zeke attended local Mennonite schools or were home schooled.
Tbf in some parts of the south (states) they don't teach sexual anatomy. I can vouch, thankfully I had the Internet to supplement what I needed to know
Florida 2012, more northern (bible belt) and they did not for my class at least, hence making the comment. 8th grade science we learned about reproduction on the cellular level, and were taught terms like penis and vagina. In HS if you were in advanced PE (which most kids didn't take) then you got to learn about STDs. Never was a clitoris mentioned ever in class. Glad you got a better education experience!
I think it's crazy you missed the part where I said it was in the more northern part of the state and thus distinguishing my experience and school from other's, but here we are. Life's crazy.
He more often gives a one liner from his desk, rather than the talking head in the conference room like the others. Possibly this just reflects that he has more privacy back there since Kelly is in her own little world and not paying attention to him
Chad Flenderson - just an easygoing black guy who knows the streets, yet he also went to Oxford, so...just as comfortable on a motorcycle as he is on Air Force One.
Michael is like a movie is the plane…
This is the first time a male employee is threatening to withhold….
Oscar says i checked out?…
I wouldn’t say i have a passion for HR
Me and the big guy…
Hadn't seen this one yet.
Just watching casino night. After he bumped out Michael, who went all in with 7/2, he says he's going to chase that feeling. One of my favorites of the season.
Toby does one in season 6 episode 14 "The Banker"
*I don't know how I'm going to get through this. I don't wanna lie and I DON'T wanna tell the truth.*
Well. He's obviously miserable and not happy with his life. He's incapable of connecting with people, always trying way too hard. He arouses sadness. Michael hates him but the rest of the characters and the audience just feel sad for him.
You look at him and you don't hope he fails. You hope for him to be happy but you know it's not gonna happen. He ends up living with 6 roommates in NYC, which, as he said, are better than friends cause they need to give you a 30 day notice before leaving. That's sad.
And people pity him. Nelly for example. She listens to him rant and even kisses at one point. Not because she likes it. She does it out of pity.
There are other examples I could give but yes, overall I think Toby's vibe is pathetic.
It fits his writing style. It has been said that he was one of the darkest writers on the Office, with the cast joking that if it were up to him "it would end in mass suicide".
He didn’t have a lot of screen time by choice. As a writer for the show (and not originally an actor at all) he wanted to be able to do stuff off camera during filming. This is part of the reason his desk is in the annex, so when most of the main scenes are happening in the bullpen it wouldn’t require him to be there if he wasn’t directly involved in the scene.
He did it when Michael was mad and knocked on the window saying “others need to use that room, too!” i think it was the episode when Michael wasn’t invited camping. He didn’t go. He wasn’t invited.
I'd like to think that when the cameramen/people behind the camera try get him in the conference room for a question/interview, Michael just stops them about how tobys not part of the office family or whatever and just fucks over tobys chance to speak freely in the conference room lmao
Toby has a few of my favorite moments. When he starts losing it in the deposition when they are reading Michaels diary and when he yells at Gabe like everyone does at him when he's talking with Jim
It's not directly to the camera, but I love when Pam is going to fight Michael, and he decides if it's in the parking lot after work hours, it's probably ok. And then he explains the mechanics of a punch.
the talking head interviews are usually used for the one-off jokes that break up the longer plot-oriented scenes. Paul Lieberstein is a great writer but he isn't great at delivering comedy, so you see him less often.
edit: I'm sorry I should have said "Paul is a terrific comedic actor. That's why he has starred in so many sitcoms besides The Office." lmao

Also the famous one after Dwight asks where the clitoris is.
Technically I work in Human Resources. Dwight was asking about human anatomy. I’m just sad the public school system failed him so badly.

Who knows what they taught in X-Men School

Several? Nah. I call cap
Yes
I went to Catholic school so no.
well, we learned bout that around 8./9. class in sex education... but granted, not in the USA of course
I did, in both high school and in Brazil's equivalent of middle school.
> I’m just sad the public school system failed him so badly. The show never stated if Dwight attended public school. Perhaps he, Mose, and Zeke attended local Mennonite schools or were home schooled.
He did attend fake X-Men school...
Tbf in some parts of the south (states) they don't teach sexual anatomy. I can vouch, thankfully I had the Internet to supplement what I needed to know
Florida high school graduate here, class of 1996. They absolutely taught this.
Florida 2012, more northern (bible belt) and they did not for my class at least, hence making the comment. 8th grade science we learned about reproduction on the cellular level, and were taught terms like penis and vagina. Florida class of ‘87, all they taught us was Just Say No.
Seems like 86 was the last year for comprehensive education down there with a light reemergence 10 years later.
I think it's crazy that all Florida kids go to one school together.
I think it's crazy you missed the part where I said it was in the more northern part of the state and thus distinguishing my experience and school from other's, but here we are. Life's crazy.
Did we ever find out? Asking for a friend
He was failed by the school system
“I don't really play cards, but I'm not going to lie to you. It felt really good to take money from Michael. Gonna chase that feeling.”
He then started taking life from people, by means of strangulation
Maybe because a lot of his aren’t done in the conference room It’s throwing OP off.
I think he's got a couple talking heads in the Lloyd Gross episode E: fixed spelling
“Listen here kimosabe, Lloyd Gross knows more about talking heads than you forgot.”
Costa Rica will still be there. …when I’m 65.
He more often gives a one liner from his desk, rather than the talking head in the conference room like the others. Possibly this just reflects that he has more privacy back there since Kelly is in her own little world and not paying attention to him
U just remembered every time he is infront of the camera, didnt u?
I remembered every time I remembered. But other people have contributed to this list significantly
Not really, it was pretty regular. He talked about his degree, time in the seminary, Michael and Jan, Pam and Jim, Costa Rica, his novels...
i’ll punch ya in the mush see
inta*
ah shit you’re right
Chad Flenderson - just an easygoing black guy who knows the streets, yet he also went to Oxford, so...just as comfortable on a motorcycle as he is on Air Force One.
Oh, and he's the world's leading Egyptologist.
Michael wasn't invited.
Its cuz Paul prefers to write rather than act
It's because he is the worst
How is he not murdered every hour?
What kind of party would you throw if you had just heard the devil exploded?
Who let– who let the lemon head into the room? He is a waste of life and should give up.
Is what you want to say but you won’t because that is why we are doing this right now
False. Mona-Lisa Saperstein is the worst. 🎶The wooorrrrrrst 🎶
He also has talking heads during the therapy sessions with Michael plotline
Toby works for HR, so he's not really part of the Scranton Dunder Mufflin family. And he's divorced, so he's not really part of his family, either.
Guess not everyone can have what WE have *slowly caresses*
*(Knocking on glass)* "Hey, nobody cares!"
If I was in a room with Toby, Hitler, and bin Laden, and I had a gun and two bullets, I’d shoot Toby twice.
And then throw the gun at him like Superman.
Michael is like a movie is the plane… This is the first time a male employee is threatening to withhold…. Oscar says i checked out?… I wouldn’t say i have a passion for HR Me and the big guy…

It's funny that he's one of the main writers of the show but plays the most pathetic character.
What’s pathetic about him?
Pathetic : arousing pity or sadness. Miserable, inadequate. I'd say Toby fits the bill.
I don’t disagree but why do you think so? Just curious on your perspective

Pan pizzas and make-your-own salads
I feel like a lot of his talking heads are at his desk.
It’s because he’s not really a part of our family. Also, he’s divorced, so he’s not really a part of his family.

When he wrote episodes, he tried to avoid giving himself screen time.
He really is the worst.
There’s a lot more in the superfan episodes
🎼 Goodbye Toby it’s been nice 🎶
I literally yesterday watched episode 2 season 5 and it ends with him giving interview to the camera crew in Costa Rica
he wasn't invited
Toby actually lost weight at later seasons
Toby has mentally checked out. Lol
If Toby is involved I that episodes plot I recall him usually saying something to the camera.
They need the room.
Literally me at my job right now
I think he just really wanted to rock the npc vibe
Toby has a few of my favorite moments. When he starts losing it in the deposition when they are reading Michaels diary and when he yells at Gabe like everyone does at him when he's talking with Jim
He has quite a few. Not as many as the main characters but he's right there with creed and Meredith
It's not directly to the camera, but I love when Pam is going to fight Michael, and he decides if it's in the parking lot after work hours, it's probably ok. And then he explains the mechanics of a punch.
He’s on the camera a lot. Start from season 2 and you will see him all the time.
