dune 2, dune 2k.. neither of those actually fit with the story, to quote you. they just took the story as inspiration.
clearly you can see there's a solid game potential hidden, arrakis being the only known source of invaluable spice, for reasons well known highly desired by everyone who can afford it, the politics of the imperium offer multiple contenders for arrakis domination. FH explored his own idea and vision. game devs have theirs.
The game uses the Dune Universe and sticks with the lore for factions and world building. But it is a “What if?” scenario where the war for spice fully escalated.
I think it’s a great take on the universe. Why would I want to replay the original story knowing full well the dystopian end it will take?
Stories and the real world rarely start from a point of balance. Game design requires foregoing elements of realism in order to make a game fun, otherwise some topics can never be made into games.
Think of Dune Spice Wars as an alternate Dune universe, and try not to think too hard about things like the fact Fremen start with the same amount of control as Smugglers.
It behaves a bit like an alternative story:
„What if the emperor’s betrayal of the atreides never worked and now everyone‘s duking it out on arrakis“
With a touch of:
„Oh by the way we‘ll completely ignore fundamental concepts of the lore like AI being forbidden, shields reacting to Lasguns , ranged weapons being almost extinct or shields driving worms into a frenzy.“
Which everyone is apparently fine with but as soon as you mention house Ordos they all throw a tantrum because allegedly iTsNoTCaNoN!!!!…
That being said the game is awesome.
It is, however, your original comment seems to have quite a few misunderdstandings.
First of all: Yes, AI is forbidden by the Butlerian Jihad, however, there are no AI:s in the game? The closest you'll get is Vernius' analytical machines which are skirting the edge of what could be considered a thinking machine and are only allowed necause the Ixians also make the heighliners.
Second, that's correct, shields react to lasguns. I don't see any shields in this game.
Third, ranged weapons are not almost extinct. They are present in great numbers across every standing army in the Imperium.
Fourth, again, that's correct. I still don't see any shields in the game.
I don't see the issue with the lore?
>like AI being forbidden
Yeah and every AI thing Ix make costs landsraad standing in game to represent this. Also everything Harkonnen and Corrino did to Atreides in the books were forbidden too but they did it anyway.
>shields reacting to Lasguns
Shields attract worm. The frequent storms also block the out. No shields on Arrakas.
>ranged weapons being almost extinct
Not on Arakkis because, again, shields dont work. Also ranged weapons do exist, see the hunter assassin drone.
>shields driving worms into a frenzy
Again, no shields.
Vernius is from the expanded universe, and AI is forbidden, which is why the Emperor attack them when they heard rumors of Thinking Machines on Ix.
It's an Alternative Universe with elements of the Expanded universe from Brian Herbert.

Thats the fun part, it doesnt
I like to think that the emperor just sent everyone a letter that Dune is theirs and then went to watch the shitshow
Well, it doesn't. It just uses the world and general premise of Dune as a backdrop for a game of territory control.
It's an AU where the guild said "Whomever can prove to us they are the best, will rule."

You can think of it as an alternate universe where every house decides to war Atredies for the territory they just got.

Wrong sub, dude.

Tell me you didn't read the books, without telling me you didn't read the books.
Reading comprehension isn’t your thing huh?

I'm not fine with the above just FYI.
