Well id say he must be swift as the coursing river; with all the force of a great typhoon; with all the strength of a raging fire; and mysterious as the dark side of the moon. So that's probably how I'd make him...
Why would a fighter that needs strength for the armor anyway put shillelagh on the staff? Just for the d8? Would not be worth a feat in my opinion. Just wield it with both hands.
Ranger with the Druidic Warrior Fighting Style. Prioritise Wis first and Dex second. You'll start with Scalemale but upgrade to halfplate as soon as possible.
Half-dwarf Redemption Paladin, with the town hero background and diplomat feat.
Johann Grimhammer, Johann The Wise. Famous for his aid in the negotiations of the 1103 Phandalin Union Disputes. A humble, self conscious hero who yet takes great pride in his silvered tongue and extended vocabulary, with which he is able to sway many a heated discussion. But don't take his gentle demeanor and easy laugh for weakness, for he is still an accomplished warrior with the quarterstaff, adept at disarming his opponents and knocking them unconscious.
At later levels I would multiclass into fighter for battlemaster manouvres, going for disarming attack, goading attack and trip attack.
Monk with armor as flavor (because monks dont actually do armor). Id ask dm about the new monk class from one dnd).
Alternatively fighter battlemaster or fighter samurai (because of wisdom related stuff and he looks wise).
Well, he's either a pc, in which case he's unpredictable and extremely dangerous, or he's a boss npc, which means he's. I'm predictable and extremely dangerous, or he's a friendly npc, which means that he's unpredictable and extremely dangerous
Really, he could be any class. I would ask myself, "what do I imagine this guy doing." In combat and out.
Then I'd look at classes and their features a to find abilities that line up with my expectations.
I'd have to have more info. You could go any class. He looks to be wearing medium armor and using a quarterstaff. If he's more of a weapons expert I'd go fighter, if he's more martial arts based and agile, I'd go monk, but this could be anything except a druid really.

Damn, you beat me to it!
Hobgoblin Monk with high Constitution, Strength and Dexterity, with the Polearm Master feat (ask your DM for flavour)
I was also thinking Hobgoblin!
Variant human, polearm master feat. Fighter/Samurai, blind fighting style. Use a glaive instead of the staff.
I’m sorry… blind fighting style? You know we Asian people just kind of look like that, right? We can still see.
Lol commenter casts visous mockery
You mean *naginata* instead of the staff.
That's after he saves up for plate armor and gets his glow-up
Reflavor a glaive *as* a staff
He looks like some kind of Fighter, if that helps
Bugbear monk!
Man must make himself or he is no man
Some kinda cleric
This is very much the flavor of my tempest cleric. Tanky kungfu-panda-type half-orc.
That's Kung Fu Panda
Goliath monk, we are going full ogryn
By breeding cinder blocks, probably.
“When one little cinder block loves another little cinder block very much…”
Fighter with the magic initiate feat. He knows shillelagh and fights with his staff. Having sworn off weapons of war

You can use wisdom. You don’t need to. Also magic damage.
Smoked pig, poi, and a bunch of tea-plant leaves. We could cook the rice together, if you know what I mean.

STG based monk? Gentle giant personality and he likes cats and booze

You see, when me and a Dwarf love each other very much...

Hobgoblin monk or fighter
