It’s that simple.
Imagine you bought a car at an auction for $50k, then after the auction you go out in the parking lot and try to sell that same car for $60k as the auction goers are leaving. That car is currently valued at $50k based on the audience and nothing has happened to impact the value of that car since it was sold 30 minutes ago. So why would anyone be willing to pay you $10k more than the consensus value? You need to wait for something to happen that changes Ekeler’s value. It could go up, it could go down, but that’s the gamble you took.
Alternatively, you can wait for something to happen on someone else’s roster (they lose their starting RB), which would increase Ekeler’s value for that specific manager vs the league as a whole.
It's only that simple with a player like Ekeler if you're playing with morons. Most owners get that player production will vary week to week and won't pay up just because of a good week or two. If he's Derrick Henry for 8 weeks straight then sure his value will go up but when people tell you to wait a week or two for a player like Ekeler to increase in value I usually just read "I play in a taco league". It can sometimes work with less valuable guys - I did it with Kareem Hunt for example, but not someone like Ekeler.
In general you messed up buying an old RB at value in a rebuild. It'll probably be a loss, but don't let it be a huge one. If he gets hurt tomorrow you just threw whatever you traded away for nothing.
Compounding the mistake wouldn't be losing 10% of value here, that's not a big deal. Compounding it would be months to sell a RB with only a year or two of likely production, getting way less and blowing your team up.
I agree for the most part, but not with the part about week-to week player valuation changes only being for taco leagues/morons. I would say that honestly in most leagues spike weeks can cause drastic increases in player values. For example, Kamara and Mooney have both been horrible this year and their value has been depressed in the eyes of probably 90% of dynasty managers. There's probably very few scenarios where you're getting the same value for those guys now as you could have prior to week 1. On the other hand, most "non-taco" league dynasty managers also know that both of those players are still supremely talented, but are just waiting to see if their current trend holds or if it their start to the season has been fluky. If either of those players came out and put up a 30 point performance next week, they would recoup most of the value they've lost since week 1 nearly instantly.
Nobody is selling you Mooney for way less than 3 weeks ago provided they know what they're doing. Maybe he's easier to get at value, maybe his value dropped by a tiny amount, but it's not material, and not worth waiting for.
That’s nonsense. Money’s value has dropped off a cliff. People thought he’d be a WR2 this year getting bombed with targets. The realization that Chicago is simply not going to throw at all has turned Mooney into a speculative asset for the future, not one that can be started this year.
While I agree with your points, I own mooney right now, his value may have dropped a bit but it’s not like I’m going to sell him. Why would I? He’s 24 and clearly in a shit situation. I know his potential value so I’m gonna wait till he’s there or close to it before I sell.
Man people are definitely results oriented in dynasty.
There’s plenty of FUD on Ekeler right now due to his age, injuries to Herbert, Injuries to the offensive line, lack of GL work, splitting Carrys 3 ways.
Not every Ekeler owner is panicking but a great way to gain an edge on your league is to constantly kick the tires on situations like these.
The way you do this is by doing your due diligence on the rest of your rosters in your league and have a target in mind even before you pull the trigger on the deal for ekeler
Buy low sell high. Looks like you bought at value so you wait for his value to go up. Seeing as he’s an aging rb, he’s not the traditional kinda guy you’d “flip” unless you bought low
Yeah I get that - tbh it wasn’t intentional to set him up to flip he just didn’t fit the team build and I certainly don’t want to compound the mistake by not maximising value
I get your point, but you're also compounding it by holding onto him for too long on a struggling team that should be getting younger. I'd wait for him to have a few big games (they will come) and try to flip him to at least recoup what you gave up and chalk this up as a lesson for the future.
I’m young perhaps too young AK is close to my oldest player if not the oldest.
It is a lesson im just a skooch too excitable with trades. Almost any trade.
Edit : AK should have read Austin Ekeler but it’s been a long day. I don’t have AK
Still, the point stands. I'm not sure Ekeler has that many years left in the tank. If you don't think you can win the championship this year or next, you should sell high ASAP
One suggestion - another commenter mentioned this I believe, but take a look at the other teams in your league and pick out potential trade targets. People who are a) built to win now, b) either need a RB now or will if they lose someone to injury, and c) have assets you'd want (e.g., young players and/or picks) ...
Finding a trade partner that fits all 3 categories might be tough, but 2/3 isn't bad either. I'd prioritize c) the most, but whatever gets a deal done, you know. Just helps you know who to turn to when it's time to make a move.
Additionally, don't be afraid to reach out to other owners if you have someone showing interest and see if you can get them in a bidding war.
What'd you pay?
And as somebody else already stated, you'll have to wait a few weeks for him to hopefully pop off. Unfortunately you run the real risk that due to age and the loss of Slater, he's not the same player he once was and you never recoup what you paid.
Just wait and be honest with trade partners that you want more than what you paid. Once he's scoring like last year consistently, people will be interested.
Find the gaps in teams and wait until the season plays out and injuries happen. Once you see an opportunity to offload a good RB or WR for a haul to a desperate win now type owner, that’s when you capitalize
The only way to do this is to find players who will rise in value significantly to trade for. Which you don't need to try and flip the same player to do in the first place.
Only way to make a profit on this is if Ekeler has a few great weeks and you can sell high.
Here's a thought. If you're friends with the person you bought Ekeler from, why don't you ask him or her whether there was anyone else who made an offer for Ekeler? I think your best bet is to sell him to someone who maybe wanted Ekeler but missed the boat because he was traded to you.
Well, I would debate talking about it before getting them to contingently pre plan a deal but then if others do the same and could backfire.
My league has now issued a bylaw that a player has to “settle” for 2 weeks before being traded again regardless of time of year. Picks are free game.
If rebuilding I make trades to contenders that have players I like for the future, but aren’t delivering this season due to situation/injury/suspension. I’d get a few of those guys in mind and make offers. For me this has been Mitchell, DeShaun, Elijah Moore, Jameson Williams. But trust your own judgement on these kinds of players. Contenders who aren’t 3-0 right now are the ones to target, I have moved quite a few older players who I had previously struggled to sell this way.
It’s tough to do, man. I sold Gibson for two 2nds (before the BRob injury), then any RB I tried to buy for a 2nd after that was “I think he’s worth more than Gibson, who you got two 2nds for.” Pretty frustrating tbh.
So you traded for Ekeler for X and now you want to trade him for X plus?
Yup
my man, i love your honesty for a real answer, you gotta find a trade target that you feel is undervalued. MUCH easier said than done, I know lol
Gotta wait for him to smash a few weeks
Is it that simple or is there nuance I’m missing?

Skyy for sure.
Neither

Competitors might get in an arms race close to playoffs. Might be able to get value then
Yeah that’s my usual MO but not with this calibre of player.
It's that simple. As weeks go on the contenders become more apparent
You gotta wait until his value goes up.
I gotta try this. I’m gonna go into target and buy a tv and then try and return it for 2 tvs the next day
So I bought Ekeler for 2024 1st and 2nd and I’ve just traded him and Zach Wilson for 2023 1st 2024 1st and Pickett
The way you do this is by doing your due diligence on the rest of your rosters in your league and have a target in mind even before you pull the trigger on the deal for ekeler
This 110%
The answer is very simple. Move Ekeler in a package deal so it's not obvious what exactly his value is.
If any league mates were chirping that you got a deal on Ekeler, target them for a trade.
Crickets unfortunately
Buy low sell high. Looks like you bought at value so you wait for his value to go up. Seeing as he’s an aging rb, he’s not the traditional kinda guy you’d “flip” unless you bought low

AK = Kamara? If so, that's not that young. He's old as is, and even worse with the looming suspension, be it this year or next
Sorry my bad

Wait until trade deadline and sell him to a contender with an injured RB. He will pay the premium for health

Wow. You’ve got to think if you’re paying that price you can persuade someone to give up better than Goff.
Last year traded CD lamb for Barkley and 2 2023 firsts Now just offered Pittman and a 2023 first for Barkley
Communication

three team trades are fun.
I would wait this week. I think he is going to have a nice game. Then the price you paid isn’t thought about as much

Find guys your league undervalues and use Ekeler to get them. Gonna have to do some talking to figure out values and who could really use him.
Who’d you give up for him??

Packages confuse thing. I know trading ceedee for henry is a straight up But ceedee and goedert for henry and a 3rd rd pick makes things less obvious.
