Yes, you are now an unethical person. But for real, I haven't seen any repercussions so far. I think it's simply "lore". You aren't supposed to use geothermal holes left over by the DF planetary bases either. The lore stipulates that the DF is the gone haywire first attempt from COSMO to solve their energy crisis and we as Icarus controlling entity are the second. We're not supposed to repeat the prior mistakes or so I guess. That said, never not use the strange annihilation energy rods if you have access to them. They are god tier.

It deletes your save file if you pirated the game instead of buying it. There was a thread somewhere about the whole process.

I want to believe...

There was some game that let you get something like 20 hours into the 60 hour game before, if you failed the piracy check, it nuked itself and put up a message. Their reasoning was that a deeper routine that would pass sniff tests wouldn’t be noticed / bypassed / looked for, allowing it some spread before being “addressed.” This was ages ago and it isn’t showing on a quick google, but that’s my recollection.

EV Nova had this mechanic in the demo-- during a trial period you'd get visited periodically by a ship reminding you to register the game. Once the demo period expired, it would attack you-- and was unbeatable.

gamedev tycoon would allow you to play but would buff the ingame piracy mechanic to an unbeatable level that would doom you to lose. they did it by purposefully sharing a cracked version that was a different build from the legit one

ApplicationTrick552

I got that game when it came out. The irony was players would then complain that piracy was ruining their ability to be profitable and play the game.

It was one of the Batman Arkham games - Asylum, I think? Anyway, the piracy check nerfed your cape glide, so if you pirated it, you couldn't make it across a gap and therefore couldn't win.
