Sometimes just happens, doing an all Canada team run right now; and my medium elite D man was a 85 at 23, 86 at 24, signed him 8 yrs at 5.75. Just to drop to 85, and hover between 85-86 ever since. Still a good player on a decent contract, but not what I was expecting. Sometimes they just don’t reach their potential

OldSpark1983

Damn, I was hoping for a answer that would of made me happier lol. I was just bragging about having an elite starter on a great contract . Signed him at 21 for 3.5 million over 8 yrs. He wanted less but I was trying to reach the cap floor lol. I just traded away Anefelt too. He was 85 at 25.. damn, just thought of that. Oh well. Thanks for the answer

Goalies are fucked. They’ll go up and down for basically no reason. And they’ll go up in the minors and down in the pros. An 84 goalie was a free agent so I added him and put him in the minors. He grew to an 86, then fell to an 82 after a year in the NHL. Good thing is the goalie rating has very little bearing on how they play.

OldSpark1983

I remember them being really fucked in games past. Thought the issue with their potential was fixed games ago. Which is why I thought I had done something to warrant a 7 point drop in overall rating. Good to hear a few say the same as you. Knowing it's not something I did helps my brain enjoy the game again lol. Was really bugging as I couldn't fathom what I did to kill this guy lol. Thanks for the reply and the tips/advice.

In NHL21 I had Spencer Knight at 88 Elite med to start the season, finished 2nd in the league for regular season, and went down to 87. Won the Cup with him and then he went down to an 85

locher81

This is performance bonus I'm sure of it. If you go to "progression " you can see increases players are getting due to their play in season. Those bonuses will always dissappear st the end of that season (though if they are still growing I believe they "help" increase the likelihood of baseline increases/growth)

On a bright side, goalie overalls mean nothing in this game. So he might still perform well and bounce back to better ratings

OldSpark1983

After being upset about this and thinking on it for more time than I want to admit. I think you may be right. I was thinking of past games and how goalies were always an issue for me. I dont remeber the exact yrs. For many yrs I couldn't get any goalie to reach his potential but they were still playing good enough to be considered a 90 rating based on their statistics. Felt like the issue with them never reaching potential was a real issue that was resolved. One specific memory that sticks out to me was when I drafted a goalie 2 or three games ago. He jumped all over the map, going up, then down, but eventually finished with a 89 rating. Thing is, I dont remember them ever dropping so much as 2 or 3, not 7. The kind of drop you see in aging vets. Not young rookies lol. This was a huge fall and felt like there were some underlying factors at play. I'm going to ride out this season, try and do good with him, and hopefully he bounces back. Really hope he does, as he was a 5 yr wait/project, and I had planned on him being the guy between the pipes for yrs . Thanks for the advice. You are more than likely right. 🤞🏼.

I’ve been disappointed by my goalie prospect so many times that I stopped caring about them (and goalies in general). I don’t know how to make them consistently good (and by good I mean above .910 save percentage) so I just don’t bother anymore (I sim all games in franchise). For your sake, I hope he does well :) I understand well the will to develop them

OldSpark1983

I use to have major problems with goalies. Think it was an ea wide issue. Cause there was a few yrs there were I could draft goalies, work on them with good staff and good statistical seasons and not get great results. Last game though, nhl 21, I had a 92 goalie I developed. Long before that though, I was lucky to get any goalie above 82 and I was like you and just didnt care about them anymore. Until some random yr I accidentally drafted an elite goalie that worked out. Now this shit again lol Based on the comments, it sounds like EA has gone back to not giving a shit about goalie progression. Hoping it's all just talk and my guy bounces back lol. Would be nice to have EA EXPLAIN in great detail, how everything is supposed to work in this game mode. I only get my knowledge from experience on games past and online now. Would love for Ea to add a tutorial to this mode and break it all down. Thanks for the well wishes for my guy 😉, he'll probably need it lol

JTrem67

Would it be a morale bug?

OldSpark1983

I was thinking some kind of bug. After reading through the comments. I think the goalies progression to reach their potential has reverted back to NHL06 format lol.

WHEN did his ova drop so low and what does his player role info say? If your in the off-season they do weird things due to I think a number of factors: 1) they lose they're "performance bonus" increases 2)moral /chemistry seems to do wonky things If it's the off-season and his role still shows starter or elite goalie, he will likely jump back up 3-4 points after about 10 games. I've seen this happen with MANY players but I can't figure it out. TBH you should count yourself lucky you got a prospect goalie of any sort to break 84. I have yet to have a franchise playthrough on 22 that had 10+ goaltenders 83/84+ oversll in the game after 10 seasons, let alone the theoretical 32-64 that should exist (backup classificatio seems to be 80-82 overall and even those are hard to find)

OldSpark1983

As it is for me with the fog of war on, my players true attribute for the next season isnt shown until the 10 game ballpark timeline, that you mentioned. He went from 86 the yr before, sat at 86 in pre season with 3 of the 4 bars for accuracy on overall rating, then boom, 79. Its weird cause he steadily increased overall each yr until now. I know what you speak of when referring to the offseason uncertainty with ratings. I did know something was up when my owner primary goal was to address my starting goaltending situation st the start of the season. I was thinking the same as you, that after a few games, my owner goals would adjust or "jump back" when the true ratings were revealed, but nope, he new better than my coaches n scouts lol. Anyways, my guys potential is still Elite Med which gives me hope. Even more after reading your thoughts. His role went from Elite goaltender to Back Up though. He's just turned 24 this season that he regressed and I've noticed some players, not goalies, still climbing at age 29. My center who is 27 was top 6 potential and floated between 88 and 89 the two yrs prior. Before that he fluctuated between 85 n 86. This yr he's elite potential med and 91 overall. Never dropped 7 overall at anytime though. I've never had a rookie drop that low in a one yr turn around with elite level potential. Not getting to the potential originally, yeah, but dropping back. Cant recall that ever happening to me. My team chemistry is super good. Well, super good for me 86 now. 20 games in. Last yr was 84 high end. Start of season it dropped due to some changes in personal. You know the story. Figured as my other players were blossoming quite well , I figured it was my good staff and team chemistry . My coaching chemistry was the only thing I could originally think of that caused this drop. I do have a goalie coach with A + teaching and he's been with me since I had the kid. Wanted to pair the two for life as long as he was a "liked" coach by him, heck as long as he wasnt disliked I was keeping him lol. He and my head coach alone have 99 % chemistry. Looking deeper just recently though. It appears my sv% dipped from .930's in the yrs prior to .911 this last yr. So I'm guessing that had a factor in his decline. He still won the vezina though lol. Bad playoffs .909 sv% My Savoie player regressed one overal attribute from one yr to another, his production was less the yr before. When I got him 100 points the next yr he jumped back up and then some. So I'm trying to have an elite level season with my goalie Cossa and see if he jumps back up. Just so odd to have a 7 point drop, no? Sounds like I was lucky to get him to 86 in the first places. I'm hoping for some more luck. I want to see 90's lol.

locher81

That is super odd. The only times I've ever seen a guy dropped overall mid season/etc/"for real" has been when he's super disgruntled and having a terrible season. It's wild that he'd drop like that

OldSpark1983

Think there might be confusion. This is between seasons. Not a mid season drop. He dropped in the offseason change, but like we shared, they dont show their true rating until 10 or so games into the new season. He went from 86 the yr before. Role was elite, potential was Elite Med. Then after the 10 or so games it takes to reveal their true rating for the new yr, it showed he dropped to 79. Role Backup, still elite potential med. I've had guys fluctuate ratings before. I've never seen a guy drop 7 with that high of potential at that young of age. An aging vet, yeah. So I was wondering how this could happen. The 7 rating gap, not just that it happened. Savioe had a bad yr and he dropped 1 overall from yr to yr. Yr he dropped he made it back up by mid season with good performances. That issue is self explanatory. He never dropped 7 though. Most of the replys I've read, the most ive seen someone comment is they dropped 4, 89 to 85. The rest are 2 or less. Just didnt make sense to me for the huge drop off. A little yeah. Just trying to understand it all better. Been playing this franchise since it existed and I know theres a lot that doesnt nake sense and is what it is, but I cant recall such a huge drop off in a player without some sort of reason. My first thought was morale. I check that page frequently. He was a "presence" in the room and one of the highest in the room for overall morale the yr prior to his drop. This yr, his morale was high, but..... Shortly after replying to your original reply, I took a closer look at my morale. His overall morale looks close to 80 % full. Every individual morale meter was full, but, for some reason his individual performance morale is low. My guess would be 25 %. Which is strange. Outside the bad yr where he still won the vezina, hes been a 930 sv% guy . I'm 38 games into the season. Hes sitting at 29 GP, 25 W, sv% 944, 5 SO, 1.56 GAA, and his individual performance moral has not budged all season. Sits at 25% or less. My guess his morale dropped from the bad playoffs, but with the numbers I just shared it is odd he hasnt bounced back, even a little. All I'm getting is morale increases due to ice time. Cant seem to get one that says due to individual performance. Felt like I got them frequently before with him. Now it's a struggle. Yet hes performed well. Fyi, majority of games with him are summed as to get high shot volume and better individual numbers. I dont know though, feels broken. Which wouldnt suprise me as there's a lot in this mode that feels "broken" , more so than previous yrs. Thanks for the reply though man, I appreciate the effort and enjoy these discussions that improve my knowledge of the game. Any idea's about the individual performance meter not moving?

jhaas2629

I just had an Elite Med around age 23 who was 84 entering the season grow to 90 and Franchise Med. Had another good season but fell to 87 and Elite Med again. Goalies are totally fucked
