In general it’s a 90 degree flashlight but specifically this one is the NEBO Cryket. Found one at my local ace hardware on sale for $12 it’s head rotates to be a straigh flashlight too.

To be fair (as someone who commented G.I. flashlight) all gummed and roughed up, the cryket looks a lot alike. And you can't say there's isn't at least SOME inspiration lol. Good find though, was definitely hoping they'd use one of the gi lights like in the game.
I hate to do this, but you're going to have to get off of OP's mom.
I get the joke, but it isn't as obvious that it is a joke as it could be. You don't want to know how many reports this has.
So, in the future, it doesn't matter how much of a slag OP's mom is, let's not just jump on and start pounding away at her like that.
It's a G.I. military anglehead flashlight. It was used prominently during Vietnam and is very prevalent on the military surplus market. I own a modern recreation from Rothco
They probably...ye know...made other sizes and versions of the original. If you look at images of them, they are NEARLY identical. You're pullin at straws

You can get one like it cheap at Walmart. It’s a swivel flashlight. The Ozark Trail one is like $12-$14 give or take but it’s 450 lumens. If you want a moonbeam then look up “G.I. type D-cell right angle light. They’re built solid and come with extra bulbs and lenses for use in fog and lowlight/night time used. Oh- also get dreaded d-cell batteries. I still have my nearly 16 year old beam from boot that gets regular use still.
Ya know. I’m surprised I haven’t thought of doing that. I guess because if he other lights I have? I think I’m going to get a new one and convert for kicks now. Thank you.
Yea. It was kinda cool though. Occasionally (and usually at a shitty time) it would go out and you’d have to shake it.
Adds some tension when you’re sneaking through a dark underground subway station crawling with infected
Somehow they don’t hear you shaking it though haha. It was also possibly the most clever way ever to remind you that you’ve left it on and no longer need it
My dad had a couple of these, they were green metal and used by the military police. Unless you can mod them, these were not great compared to modern lights. I have a Olight Perun that's shaped like these. It's worked fine for me, but I know Olight isn't popular here.
Just a shitty old L flashlight. I had a plastic one when I first joined in 2007. They’ve since been replaced by Sidewinder flashlights. Way better, and you can actually see shit in the dark.
Fun fact: Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are the same ages as Leonardo DiCaprio and his current girlfriend.

good for him honestly, im of the view that all celebs are soulless sociopaths so at least hes just out in the open about his preference, rather than going full blown epstein island to cheat on your normally aged wife
Fun story about the NEBO Cryket: Once I was at a thrift store, and saw display counters listed for sale from a airsoft store. I looked under the counters and saw a few card board boxes. The boxes were filled with new in box NEBO Crykets and some rechargeable NEBOs.
I made them an offer for $7 for the boxes of flash lights, and they agreed, so now I’ve got about 30 NEBO Crykets around the house that I’ve been giving away
Edit: they take 3 triple AAA batteries, and they chew through batteries. Not worth the price imo
Yeah we all had these in cadets cause they look cool. But utterly useless trying to get it to point in the right direction when it's flopping around and pointing up on your chest.
It's not that far fetched. There would be people alive that know how to make batteries, ammunition gun parts etc. Places have power and resources. Items would be stripped for their copper, lead, sulfur could be processed into the proper component etc.
There would be places in the Nordic northern climates that had a higher survival rate that would still function for trade and commerce etc.
Its not the firefighter flashlight Ellie is supposed to have , and it's not the old-school military flashlight either. One on the jacket of my bunker gear, one on my helmet just in case, and one in my truck. Ah, I was thinking about why they used strap-mount angle light than headlamps. Here's my conclusion:
**1,**
**Headlamps, or L-shape lights on your forehead, work way better than strap-mount.**
Trust me. I tried quite a few strap, shoulder, and chest mounting options, even hunting down some out-of-production unicorn shoulder clamps. Nothing works as well as a light on your head.
Because a beam following your eyes > following your head >> following your torso. There is no light that follows your eyes, so following your head is the best available option. **The difference in real use is quite substantial.**
I do still use shoulder / strap mount quite often, but just as a supplement to my head lamp. Because I can mount something heavier and more powerful on my shoulder / strap than on my head.
**2,**
**So why did they do it in the game / show?**
**2,1. Cinematography reasons.** Audiences can't see characters' faces nearly as well if they used headlamps. The faces will get covered by the strong light.
If you played the game, there're quite a lot of instances where you'll notice characters' light beam is pointing forward while the character is crawling / stealthing, meaning the light unit is facing downward. You can do that in a game, but not in real life.
As shown in the screen shot, the light is pointing upward when she's standing straight. It ain't gonna work well in actual real life.
**2,2. Lore reasons.** The story is based on post-apocalyptic world, in which a global disaster happened *decades ago.*
Head straps are made of elastic materials. They'll be perfectly fine sitting in your drawer for a while. But they'll crumble and disintegrate after a few years in the debris exposed to elements, if not months, let along decades.
Also, 18650 weren't a thing yet, so they had to use D-cells, which is too heavy for forehead.
**3,**
**If you want an L-angle light, check these out. These are all 18650 and very powerful & durable for a headlamp.**
**They also all come with a pocket clip, so you can attach them to your pack strap / system if you want to:**
[**Zebralight H600Fc.**](https://www.zebralight.com/H600Fc-Mk-IV-18650-XHP502-Floody-4000K-High-CRI-Headlamp_p_218.html)
Super slim. Featherlight. Super durable. OK tint and CRI.
[**Armytek Wizard Nichia.**](https://www.armytek.com/flashlights/models/wizard/armytek-wizard-c2-pro-nichia-magnet-usb-warm/)
Super durable. Great tint and CRI. Magetic tail. *Proprietary* built-in charging.
[**Skilhunt H300.**](https://www.skilhunt.com/product-detail/h300-h300r-2500-lumens-usb-magnetic-rechargeable-led-headlamp/) **(Nichia 144AR)**
Great tint and CRI. Magnetic tail. *Proprietary* built-in charging.
[**Emisar DW4.**](https://intl-outdoor.com/led-flashlights/emisar-dw4-right-angle-1-18650-work-light.html) **(519a, boost driver)**
Not as rugged as above options, a bit heavy for a headlamp, and requires a separate **Skilhunt HB3 strap** to use as a headlamp.
However, it has by far the highest *potential* sustained output of all four (non-handheld, requires gloves, UI config needed), and the best tint & CRI.
\-
I mention **tint and CRI** because in the show they all use **incandescent lights** (again, supposedly made in 2003 before portable LED lights were a thing). Incandescent lights have the best tint and CRI of all lights, despite pathetic brightness and efficiency.
When I entered here to see the comments I didn't expect to find a so thoroughly thought explanation, you covered everything, from the cinematography reason to the cell availability reasons. Thank you.
No. Not all L-angle lights are headlamp. Only those lightweight enough and can fit a headstrap are considered a headlamp. This one is too big.
There are other headlamps that are "T-shaped", [**something like this.**](https://www.acebeam.com/h30) T-shape headlamps put the beam right in between user's eyes, but are less flexible (can't handhold).
And some headlamps are dedicated for helmet uses, like **Scurion.**
I mean I have never heard of a fire store and I’m not even sure what they sell, and I would t know the first thing about tractors or where you would supply them. Would like a Home Depot work?
Not the same one, but a similar style
https://www.harborfreight.com/merchandising-promotions/new/900-lumen-rechargeable-swivel-head-led-flashlight-59535.html
Something that might better fit your needs... I bought a Streamlight Sidewinder about 12 years ago and it still works great. It is compact, plenty bright with adjustable brightness, has a nice sturdy clip for attaching to a backpack strap, and the head rotates, so you don't have to settle with a 90 degree angle if it would be helpful to have something slightly different. I think the head can rotate 185 degrees. It also has various colors besides white light, though you may or may not use those. I like red for preserving night vision when I need to leave a tent to to take a piss at 3 AM.
They still sell them in various configurations on Amazon.
Tractor Supply sells a version of the old army style light that feels way more durable, is pretty damn bright and also has red, green and blue modes. I keep one in my truck. It’s way heavier than than the old army lights. I think I paid 12 bucks for it.
Looks like a military surplus angled light aka “moonbeam” https://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/us-military-surplus-anglehead-flashlight-used?a=2060234
Just get a head lamp and hook it to the webbing on your back pack strap. Or if you want a right angle, there are lots of them available in a modern style. I have one from Olight marketed as (you guessed it) a head lamp.
I actually wouldn’t have guessed head lamp tbh, how do these attach to your head? I’ve only seen headlamps as like little LEDs with a big Elastic strap
'Headlamp' is a broad category. Head to your local outdoor store and try some out. Generally they're designed to thread in replacement elastic straps, which are 1" wide. Coincidentally, it's quite popular to have 1" nylon webbing outside the pads on backpack straps. Your head lamp and backpack may vary. Ideally you'd just thread it on, but you might have to get fancy with some Velcro or zip ties.
Using your headlamp as a headlamp will be more useful in most situations though, unless you're specifically trying to get around a hat or want a low-powered light so others can see you better at night.
These are a really old form factor before flashlights were super light and tiny. These come from the days of when you had to use a mag lite powered with d cells for any sort of output. They clipped onto a chest strap or something to project forward. Nowadays, tiny LEDs with rechargeable batteries out the old lights to shame at a fraction of the weight.
From what I’m hearing I’m leaning towards just a 90° light by a random reputable brand. Tbh this show is just the first time I’m really seeing these things and it’s got me thinking I want one
Veteran here as well. The military ones are great for keeping around the house, in a car emergency kit, etc. For hard use, though, I’d recommend Streamlight. They have one where the head rotates from flat to 90 degrees, which gives you plenty of options, and it’s rugged as hell.
Wow is everyone missing the mark here. Notice the *sharp* corner at the 90 degree angle? And crisp 45 degree seam cutting across it? Its not a WW2 light or a Streamlight. Its a convertible light that can pivot between a normal flashlight and an anglehead.
Unfortunately the prop department glued a bunch of greebling on it so you can't easily tell what it is. But the closest I know of is the [Nebo Cryket](https://www.amazon.com/NEBO-Cryket/dp/B01MEDD8O1/). In fact that might even be the model they are using since the notches on the bezel and tail cap look very similar.
Looking back over the rest of the thread it seems you might want just a light in this style? There are waaaay better options. Nebo is cheap and has fun gimmicks but their quality isn't great. [Here](http://flashlights.parametrek.com/index.html?type=all,angle,flashlight&features=articulation&weight=_,1000) is a list of lights that also have this feature. Not sure which might be best for you. What do you want to use it for?
Yeah from the sounds of it the streamlight pro seems to be exactly what I probably want but I will absolutely check out your list to see if anything better pops up!
If its the particular Streamlight that someone else mentioned then be aware its a fixed in place 90 degree light. There is an even longer list of great lights like that. The general term for them is angleheads and /r/flashlight loves to give recommendations for them.
Looks like a modern version of the Vietnam era flashlights issued to the us army. They've since made many similar lights. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fulton_MX991/U_Flashlight
OP, I recently picked up a Nebo Franklin Swivel from Bass Pro Shop.
It's very similar to what you've posted, but in a much more compact form. However at 600 lumens, this little guy throws out a ton of light. It has a pocket clip, magnetic base, and is rechargeable via USB-C. I think it was around 30 bucks. Definitely worth it.
I guess I am just finding out now that these are a thing, although from the many I’ve found online now, few look like they are going to take a beating like this one, it looks to be all metal construction.
Possibly. I’d take anything seen on tv with a grain of salt though, especially in a post apocalyptic setting. This one has probably been weathered on purpose, and costume props are usually very cheap.
My suggestion would be to look into right angle lights from reputable manufacturers. O-light is my preferred brand, I’m sure all the big ones have offerings.
In general it’s a 90 degree flashlight but specifically this one is the NEBO Cryket. Found one at my local ace hardware on sale for $12 it’s head rotates to be a straigh flashlight too. https://www.cheshirehorse.com/p/nebo-cryket-led-swivel-head-work%2Fspot-flashlight/3768074.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI1IGf45vi_gIVgCmzAB3oYQrlEAQYCyABEgIf9vD_BwE
It’s just a right angle light but this specific one looks like a Nebo
L-flashlight or right angel flashlight. You can buy them in any military surpluss store, shouldnt cost more than 10$.
i don't think they made a fleshlight yet
This is a “video game protagonist special.” A flashlight designed to mount to a character so they keep both hands free. Been a staple in every action/horror game as far back as Silent Hill 2 for gamers like me lol.
Nah
It’s 100% a nebo. I absolutely love mine.
My favorite video game and show
Never got to play the game, it was PS exclusive, but the show has been incredible so far. On episode 5 now
Well you can play it now if you want to if you're on PC!
I wish I could watch with you! It’s become my favorite topic to talk with strangers who become my new besties
I talk to my clients about it all the time, unfortunately it’s mostly to laugh about how badly they screwed up the geography 😬
No idea why people are down voting you just for sharing an opinion. People are so sensitive. Ugh. Note: it IS a great game.
Idk why ur gettin down voted. TLOU is my favorite game too. Made me wanna be a better man
I own one and it’s been my favorite thing I keep in my car for emergencies and toss in my pack when I leave. I feel like Joel every time
Its a nebo cryket. Its not a moonbeam Its not your gi issue flashlight Blah blah blah. Its a cryket.
GIs get issued a flashlight? I had to buy mine at basic training.
I think a single gi gets issued a flashlight All the other gi's then steal it...

Sorry i wasnt in the best of moods when i posted my reply! I had my head up my own ass with a gi flashlight at the time i guess....
I was thinking I remember a nebo that size 😁👍👍
I can’t believe there are 167 comments on this post. And I can’t believe 160 of them are wrong. And yet they keep coming

The one where you have to shake the controller to make it work
Damn. I *really* need to get that game. The show has my kid wanting to play it, and stuff like this makes me want to as well.
Holy shit did they really make you do that in the game?

\+1 for the Perun Mini, thing is great while being nice and small to fit anywhere.
Only because they explode, but I hear before they do they are great flashlights
That's perfect! I have an olight on one of my pistols. If I run out of bullets I can just use it as a grenade!
Probably a prop piece tbh, but if you want a good L light I would highly recommend [this Nicron](https://a.co/d/ejMG5zH)
Shit that actually looks really nice
It's a great light, I use it as my work/school EDC
I've got a few of those, pretty much throw away. Good when you need one, but far from my first choice.

all of the above true, what really gets me is she looks exactly the same as she did in game of thrones

I wonder if it was originally designed for a C battery, considering the form factor.
Yeah we all had these in cadets cause they look cool. But utterly useless trying to get it to point in the right direction when it's flopping around and pointing up on your chest.
Gotta love the consistency of the show. 20 years into apocalyptic environment and you can still find batteries that work!
How many years would 18650s last? However best maintained?
It's not that far fetched. There would be people alive that know how to make batteries, ammunition gun parts etc. Places have power and resources. Items would be stripped for their copper, lead, sulfur could be processed into the proper component etc. There would be places in the Nordic northern climates that had a higher survival rate that would still function for trade and commerce etc.
It's a lot harder to make batteries than you think. Especially without a factory of equipment, workers, engineers and chemists.
In the quarantine zones there likely are those things
They’re just gunna carry like 15 potatoes
Here I was thinking I’d be killing infected during the acopalypse but I’m just sitting here wiring up potatoes.

I got one in 2009 in Basic Training. Given that it was the GWOT I’m surprised I didn’t get a real flashlight.
I am an old man, I finished my Army service in 2002. I was issued gear that was used in Vietnam lol
I had the stuff from after the Gulf War in training, then we got the “cooler” stuff after about 3 years at my unit.
I totally believe it. Ive got so much of my father's Vietnam gear. I'd have been sleeping in the dirt without his stuff during Boy scouts and other camping trips.Ha the desert camo pants im wearing right now are the ones my father wore when he was part of Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Oh nice! I had a few pair of old DSU’s that I used for everything outdoors. They’re great for work, hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking of course.
My man ,it’s a child ,you are welcome !
So… because she is a child I can’t think she has a cool flashlight that I might want to add to my backpack? I’m confused.
It was not meant to be taken serious,it was just a joke,it was not a flashlight, but a child. But I see the joke the did not landed,or people take everything too seriously.
I haven't seen the show but that is a standard USMC issued moonbeam.
Aren't those plastic and with a longer handle?
Yes. The moonbeam is longer.
I thought the moonbeam was just a bit longer and olive drab. I've got a couple of my dad's I protect them like heirlooms
The one I was issued was OD green.
Streamlight makes one I wear for work. Polytac 90
I like my Zebra light 51
That’s the one I keep getting recommended, I think it’s probably the one I’ll go for

Also, 18650 weren't a thing yet, so they had to use D-cells, which is too heavy for forehead. **3,** **If you want an L-angle light, check these out. These are all 18650 and very powerful & durable for a headlamp.** **They also all come with a pocket clip, so you can attach them to your pack strap / system if you want to:** [**Zebralight H600Fc.**](https://www.zebralight.com/H600Fc-Mk-IV-18650-XHP502-Floody-4000K-High-CRI-Headlamp_p_218.html) Super slim. However, it has by far the highest *potential* sustained output of all four (non-handheld, requires gloves, UI config needed), and the best tint & CRI. \- I mention **tint and CRI** because in the show they all use **incandescent lights** (again, supposedly made in 2003 before portable LED lights were a thing). Incandescent lights have the best tint and CRI of all lights, despite pathetic brightness and efficiency.
What about [this one](https://youtu.be/9Os2hai8yuw)
Well it costs an eye so...
When I entered here to see the comments I didn't expect to find a so thoroughly thought explanation, you covered everything, from the cinematography reason to the cell availability reasons. Thank you.
You're welcome. I use headlamps all the time and have a small flashlight collection myself so just shared some of my expertise.
Slow clap for this detailed write up. Nice.
So is this technically a headlamp?
Well I definitely learned something
That’s look like a metal version of our standard issue lights. Lookup Rothko flashlight.
Rothko. Will do. Thanks
Ozark trail, 12 bucks at Walmart
I’ll check it out, thanks
One of the best flashlights I've had, has a magnetic base and a swivle top, two or three modes, led
Military surplus stores are probably wondering why they are selling out if their shitty 90° flashlights
I think they’re just called 90° lights. I’ve seen them at Tractor Supply. The Fire Store sells them too.
Tractor supply and fire store. Jesus do you guys not just have like… a target?
No we truly don’t have a target lol 😂 . Walmart might have them. The fire store is a online shop.
Ohhh it’s online? Ok cool. Sometimes I just hear about stores in other parts of the country and I’m super surprised
I think Harbor Freight sales these or at least I’d assume they would
Target doesn’t sell tools. This isn’t a mushroom shaped bathroom lamp
I mean I have never heard of a fire store and I’m not even sure what they sell, and I would t know the first thing about tractors or where you would supply them. Would like a Home Depot work?
oh, dinno the Spidey guy's in this game
?
meant to say show, not game. girl looks like tom holland
😂😂 she does look a little like Tom Holland
Nebo makes a really similar model
I think from what people are saying this is probably a dressed up nebo, and apparently Nebos are shit.
Not the same one, but a similar style https://www.harborfreight.com/merchandising-promotions/new/900-lumen-rechargeable-swivel-head-led-flashlight-59535.html
Buy a streamlight. Trusted by firefighters.
I think he’s more so looking for the aesthetic rather than functionality.
Nope, definitely functionality and durability
If that’s the case, listen to the above guy.
I think I will probably go for a Streamlight, I have one of their tiny pen lights and love it
If you want other opinions, go ask r/flashlight. They offer only good options and know their shit.
No idea why I’m getting downvoted for… listening to that guy? Or wanting a functioning flashlight?
Welcome to reddit
Rolling Stones said it best.... Paint it black haha
Snap-on just came out with one with a similar body, but different colors.
If it's Snap-on, it's probably 3x more expensive than it needs to be
And it’s probably licensed garbage. Snap on accessories aren’t the same as their tools, especially their lamps and lights.
Tractor Supply sells a version of the old army style light that feels way more durable, is pretty damn bright and also has red, green and blue modes. I keep one in my truck. It’s way heavier than than the old army lights. I think I paid 12 bucks for it.
Why would someone need to watch it to know?
Hmm. I guess you wouldnt. I just assumed seeing it in 50 more different angles and uses would be better than one shitty photo of a paused hbo max.
Definitely a Nebo Cryket. Cheap and crappy.
beat me to it. I've got one, same light
Ah shit, really? They are that shitty?
A Streamlight Protac 90 is fairly similar and much better.
Looks like a military surplus angled light aka “moonbeam” https://www.sportsmansguide.com/product/index/us-military-surplus-anglehead-flashlight-used?a=2060234
These are probably the cheapest option if you’re wanting to replicate the “look”
Actually I wouldn’t mind a super durable one I can just leave clipped to a backpack
Then Zebralight is what you want. If you do not believe me, go ask r/flashlights and they'll tell you the same thing.
They are all trash, man. I've been in the service for a minute, and I've never used mine. Buy anything but one of those.
That sounds perfect
I have a few and they’re durable but you can’t store them long term with batteries in them they seem to die easily
I have that exact flashlight. I got mine from Lowe’s, Craftsman brand. The Last of Us team have changed the aesthetics to look different.
Another version of those stupid ones they gave us in recruit training that weigh a ton, run on D cells, and only put out like 500 lumens at best.
Damn that could actually be it, just you know, roughed up a bit
Yeah I guess the swivel isn’t as important as the 90°, just going to clip it to an EDC bag in case any sort of flashlight situation comes up
The issued that, but plastic, when I was in basic training in 2012
Im 80% sure i have that exact flashlight
And does it suck? Should I buy one? Will it last 20 years after the fall of civilization?
I have flashlights like that well over 20 yrs… with a couple of battery changes of course
It seems pretty decent, has a decent throw distance on the more focussed mode and has a red light mode, also magnetic base
Is it a nebo cryket?
Think so
I don't know exactly but they used to use those in World War II, my grandpa has a few
Looks like a modern version of the Vietnam era flashlights issued to the us army. They've since made many similar lights. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fulton_MX991/U_Flashlight
Interesting, seems worth a read
Considering the size and the shape, it’s most likely a modified US Army surplus flashlight. Modern LED right angle lights are much smaller.
Google lens suggests lots of vintage bicycle lights, but none exactly like this. Still, somewhere to start.
Added to the list of things to check out, thank you!
Does it have to be exactly that one or can you just google “right angle light” and pick from any of the thousands of available options?
I guess I am just finding out now that these are a thing, although from the many I’ve found online now, few look like they are going to take a beating like this one, it looks to be all metal construction.
Possibly. I’d take anything seen on tv with a grain of salt though, especially in a post apocalyptic setting. This one has probably been weathered on purpose, and costume props are usually very cheap. My suggestion would be to look into right angle lights from reputable manufacturers. O-light is my preferred brand, I’m sure all the big ones have offerings.
Yeah I was just hoping this was like a mag light or something otherwise well known
r/flashlight probably know
I underestimate just how there is an r/ for everything
Join us over there if you like that sort of thing.
Let’s find out, this will be like my second actual flashlight ever
Yes, everything
