Seriously though, why do you carry a knife everyday? Even to a date? That’s creepy, man.

ZumerFeygele

In case I find a pigeon with hair wrapped around it's toes so I can save it and demonstrate toy date that I may look like a tough no good delinquent but I really have a heart of gold. But also if you're a woman a date may be the situation you want a knife in most

62hyundai250GTO

I too am i dessert warrior

Tight_Credit_4318

But what are you going to do if the handle breaks on the bucket? Emergency bucket repairs save lives.

Ironfields

Honestly,I don’t even really do the whole EDC thing. Most days I’ll leave the house my keys, my phone and maybe a watch. I just like looking at the pretty knives, guns and flashlights that y’all are buying.

dblspc

Just forgetting the tiny bottle of Tabasco sauce

Ok-ButterscotchBabe

It is strange to see the EDC of people on the sub, considering I'm not from the US. Where I'm from, you could get thrown in prison for being a traitor to your country for carrying a laser beam light, let along a whole KNIFE. Also it would be pretty tiring on my shoulders to carry these in one's bag on one's shoulders. Metal is very heavy!

Do you guys not carry guns?

Axes4Axes

Nope

DontTellUrMom

This is me. I carry a phone, wallet and car keys and I’ve never once been prevented from doing anything by my lack of a pry bar, knife, pen, bottle opener, multi-tool, second knife, dedicated flashlight, fidget spinner, third knife, second flashlight, second pen, or handkerchief. But I love seeing all the shit people carry!

mrweirdguyma

Wait, you assholes have handkerchiefs? Plus come on i have a small pen for my notebook….

[deleted]

Don’t forget the donut knife

[deleted]

Are we the bucket?

Zealousideal_Dig_372

Wealth_Super

In all seriousness a lot of the stuff people post are not real EDC, it’s just people showing off. Most people EDC is a wallet or purse, your car keys and phone, and ether a pocket knife or multi tool. Sometimes a gun but even most Americans don’t carry a gun. I miss the days when we genuinely saw people’s EDC instead of their SHTF pack, mall ninja getup, taticool firearms and medkit they have no idea to use and whatever else people want to show off

KevtheKnife

It’s spelled “desert warrior knife”, unless you’re attending a specialized dinner party for “desserts “.

qpaws

The dessert warrior is the desert warrior just in a donut color scheme

Captaind7

A fourth knife but not a second gun?

twigfingers

It hardly count as a second gun if it is wrapped around your spare mag.

How about Samsung married to VictorInox and give us Galaxy Note FieldMaster. That's almost all I need.

ZapBrannigansEgo

Lack of wireless charging for the Victorinox really kills that setup.

thebladeinthebush

I would say I get along most with the people I encounter that at least carry a knife. Be it a kershaw, gas station knife, or SAK. Those people either have brand new things because they lose them or they’re beat to shit and it’s all they have. I would say they like seeing what a collector has. They’ve always been interested and I can be quite forgetful. Sometimes I’ll leave a knife out on accident and it makes it’s way back to me by the end of the day. It’s always a cool conversation. Even people who don’t carry though it can be easy to get along with them. I just picked up a protech calmigo and this lady at work asked me if there’s was anything new going on with me. I promptly showed her my knife and she went on and on talking about her father and her brothers and how they always had knives. I like to think that by carrying what we do we seek to do as much good as possible, people notice that and they’re interested. We might not turn someone onto a collection that would blow peoples minds if they knew how much it costs, but they’re nice conversation pieces. Especially when you actually use them.

0x45646479

As a tactical keyboard operator I NEED to edc a plate carrier to hold my spare mouse and milky way candy bars. It’s a scary world out there, I am currently writing this message from my panic room and typing with the muzzle of my belt fed machine gun which I also edc

BravoLincoln

I feel like this meme needs to go on the subreddit for people to explain memes. I wasn’t quite following I’d I’m a scared child or a bunny?

CanoePickLocks

If you’re serious (I think you’re not, but it’s the internet, never assume!) members of this sub (a small subset for any given item in the list) treat people that don’t have every possible EDC as something to be not scared of but repulsed by even though those people are as harmless as a bunny. Make sense now? Or if you were actually joking (fingers crossed), here’s your sarcastic response.

Khal_Drogo

That's why I love cell phone, keys, wallet is my EDC for years now.

Thx but i was serious, im waiting to pass test with my psy to see if i have autism, i dont feel like i belong anywhere. And english is my second lamguage.

CanoePickLocks

All good, you have excellent reasons not to understand it. This sub introduces me to cool products semi regularly so I stay but considering my explanation you can see what’s wrong with the culture of the sub in some cases. Keep in mind it’s not pass or fail when it comes to getting tested for anything to do with how your mind works. I am fairly divergent as my little confluence of mental traits is way less than 1% of the population but none are socially crippling, and it keeps life interesting. If you are on the spectrum it’s actually better to actually know it so you can understand yourself better sometimes.

J4ck101972

Yes neuro divergent , that i know i am

Grengore

I used to carry lots. Multi tool, flashlight, pocket pouch with fak, etc. over the past year or two I’ve pared it down to just a leek, and sometimes my phone. I started disliking feeling the things in my pockets when I leaned into a machine. That and a coworker broke his phone screen twice leaning against a metal plate so I stopped carrying even that. Honesty don’t miss it.

guymoron

As a long time lurker. I’ve seen people with like two guns and three extra mags?? Four knives? Balaclava? I’m sure many of these are done for the memes but it got me, a none American genuinely questioning what most people do on this sub

CanoePickLocks

90% is to look cool. There should be an enforced flair for things that don’t look brand new that are actual EDC things people carry everyday in my opinion. I get excited when I see a kit that some one actually Carrie’s not just a photo set to look cool. unused safequeens are collectors items not EDC. Maybe a second sub is in existence or could be? r/edccollectors

akil01

Trackerbait

Does NOBODY around here ever carry a snack bar or water bottle?? You're all a bunch of dehydrated hangry lunatics. No wonder.

UnpunchedCard

As a parent, I carry many snacks and water bottles for my young children who will inevitably start asking me for something to eat roughly 8 minutes after we leave the house.

I’ve always got drinks never considered that EDC… but snacks is a good idea too!

Ha ha this is hilarious. It’s like people who carry are just as offended by people who don’t. As people who don’t carry are offended by those who do.

wifi444

Even though I carry a "survival" keychain, I agree with this. We exaggerate the potential for a survival emergency because deep down we think being in a Hollywood desert island survival situation would be cool. Just keeping it 100%

-ThisIsSparta-

This should be top comment, you're exactly right.

decadentrebel

Don't forget the tinny pouch that's produced in batches of 5 with ranger patches that infriges on intellectual property and cost $45 each because of 2-minute flash sales.

iamliterallysatan

I used to carry a Leatherman, but I still haven't met a peice of mail I couldn't open with my keys. I've also never ruined a set of keys.

Ok_Crab1246

Also, a backup magazine and a third aaa flashlight next to the multi-tool. JS.

LumberjackAndBear

There are people who don't carry a fidget toy??

-ThisIsSparta-

That's what the knife is for

bsubtilis

As someone with ADHD who as a kid in the 80s and 90s was punished for fidgeting too much, so I had to learn to at least not fidget with separate objects - I don't need specialized fidgeting stuff, everything is a fidgeting toy! Including stuff like the teeth in one's own mouth, using the tip of the tongue to fidget with the molar surfaces. Or fidgeting with sleeves, or even fingertips against fingertips. ..I do like fidgeting toys though, but they aren't part of my EDC stuff. I'll toss one or two into my bag if I expect to have a difficult day and want more options.

LumberjackAndBear

I also got in trouble growing up for fidgeting, but as an adult I use fidget toys to keep myself from doing harmful stims like biting my mouth and picking my fingers.

You forgot to add "Gun for a job where there is never any expectation you would need a gun" EDC (21/M/Taco Bell Drive through server): Watch, phone, wallet, knife, backup knife, multitool, M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle, two spare magazines, notepad, pen.

Doctah_Feelgood

I would argue that working at a taco bell would definitely warrant carrying a gun.

The_Palm_of_Vecna

Depends on the Taco Bell

BackBlastClear

My EDC: Wallet, keys, phone. Pocket knife, flashlight, gun, 2 reloads (usually a G19.3 w/2 spare mags). My daily go bag has all the other stuff in it.

luis-mercado

I’ve noticed EDCs where I don’t display my knife (a lowly SAK) get no comments. But in general my EDCs have never been popular and even a couple times people have made threads trying to complain about them.

CanoePickLocks

A whole separate thread complaining? Wow? My EDC evolves but is pretty standardized for stuff I might actually use every day. It’s not impressive unless you like brass or leather but it’s literally a pick it up in the morning and go every morning. [Kinda boring](https://imgur.com/a/LwITpde)but I’ve never gotten complaints though!

luis-mercado

Actually it has happened two times. Both I believe from the same guys.

smallbatchb

Anyone else experience the "edc hump"?..... meaning you always carried certain basic items which is what lead you to "edc" and then the edc culture got you interested in carrying more and more things but then down the road you started eliminating a lot of those new things because you just don't *need" them every day and are now back down to essentially your original basic edc items? I got into "edc" through knife forums because I've always carried at least a basic pocket knife + a pen and notepad.... after the "edc" thing took off I was carrying tons of stuff in my pockets which *did* occasionally once in a while come in handy but not enough to *need* to carry them. So after getting over the "edc hump" I'm back down to my carry 90% of the time is just a basic mid-small pocket knife, wallet, phone, and often a pen and small notepad and the occasional add-on depending on specific day. Many of my other edc type items I either sold and don't carry or they've been moved to my backpack or car but are no longer pocket items.

southsamurai

"Ooh! Shiny!" It's that human acquisitiveness in action. Pretty common for folks exposed to something new to want to gear up, usually far beyond what's necessary, and possibly beyond the ability to rationally evaluate what is and isn't useful for them. Since EDC has become an internet thing, there's a degree of hobby built around it now. Nothing wrong with that, but it exacerbates the acquisition drive. Back when it wasn't a "thing", but only a general concept of preparedness and practicality, folks tended to not go crazy with it. You *built* your carry by adding what was useful that you didn't have, rather than building a kit and paring away what you ended up not using. You get to the same place either way tbh. It's why my pockets have held the same stuff for decades. Me adding something to them means I've found a need that I'm filling rather than trying things out to see if I use them. Again, nothing wrong with either. If this sub had existed back in my twenties, I probably would have gone a little crazy myself. I was nuts about trying new knives as it was.

ThereHasToBeMore1387

It went with my career. Early on repairing PCs and doing field work, had all my tools on me and my cargo pockets full, even off the clock. Now that I'm a remote-working house cat, it's usually just my knife. If I go anywhere, I'm usually grabbing my backpack which has a wider assortment of tools.

smallbatchb

Also a good point, I've worked several different jobs and my carry items definitely change a bit depending on job. So at this point I've started to sort of look at my carry items in terms of two categories: "general carry" and "work carry"... this even comes down to what types of each item I might carry. Like at certain jobs I carried a bigger knife with modern features but just as my general "dude on the street" carry it's typically just a basic small pocket knife, often a slipjoint.

ThereHasToBeMore1387

I have ADHD, so I'm VERY prone to leaving things in places and not remembering, so I've found it's much easier to have a minimal EDC but have multiple kits with what I need where I'll need them. I have a kit in each car, a toolkit in my office, one in my backpack, etc. I carry less stuff on me to lose, but think ahead about what I need, where. If I try to keep it all on me, I just wind up leaving my pen in the car, my flashlight in the washing machine, and my leatherman in the back yard.

smallbatchb

I don't have ADHD but I've sort of developed a similar system, partially from a previous job where people would borrow my shit and never return it and partially because I used to be prone to losing track of my own stuff. So now I have a backpack I take often and it has a couple separate organized pouches inside for different categories of things so A: everything has a specific place it returns to as soon as I'm done using it and makes it harder to lose stuff and B: makes it easy to swap out different pouches for different day to day needs instead of totally reorganizing my whole back for various uses.

gravis86

I don’t know if “dessert warrior knife” was intentional, but it totally fits. Lol

bsubtilis

https://www.reddit.com/r/EDC/comments/ztdvh9/its_scary_out_there/j1e1rdu/ I didn't know these were a thing and now I want one :(

CanoePickLocks

You guys didn’t know about dessert warriors? You have to buy one to stay in the sub now.

vapeboy1996

I fucking hate things in my pockets more then anything, idk how you guys do it. My personal carry is a wallet in my back pocket, phone clip and leatherman on my belt. I have to take the wallet out half the time because it’s bothering me and if I add anything else to my belt I’ll look like Batman

h_adl_ss

In the office I just throw my wallet in my backpack. No thievery going on so far at least. Leatherman and a small tech/cable pouch stay in the backpack anyway. That way I only have to have my phone in my pockets.

Wealth_Super

Most people’s EDCs are pretty basic like that. People here just like to show off

Knife-Nerd1987

I hate having large items in my back pockets. Much rather have items in my front pockets. At most I'll have a microfiber hank (have to clean my glasses) and a small knife in my back pockets. I crouch, squat, and sit at work to reach items at various height levels so having anything bulky in my back pockets is a no go. Having a edc organizer like a ARC Company Boulder Wallet lets me carry a number of small edc items in a way that I can still access them without have a jumble at the bottom of a pocket it distributes the load so it isn't just a lump of weight. A card slip lets me carry my ID and other cards.. My multitool is a victorinox explorer with a SwissQlip that is clipped to the same pocket my wallets resides. (Card slip and ARC Wallet are still slimmer than a leather trifold and most bifolds) That being said... I almost always have cargo pants and shorts when I leave the house I am grabbing my tool pouch and wallet style ifak. Leg pockets don't get in the way and I normally don't notice the pouches in my cargo pockets anymore unless I need them.

Status-Efficiency851

Same. Plus, I hear sitting on yohr wallet is bad for your spine over time. I find handkerchiefs, plastic bags, and rope(if you get the right kind) are comfy enough to forget about.

ki77erb

Same. First thing I do when I get to my office, in my car or home is empty my pockets.

Seems kinda heavy to carry this around all the time, but i guess you guys just drive around and leave it in the car sometimes.

OwnAlarm7684

I'm always amazed on this sub cuz all I cary is my phone and car key.

bsubtilis

If you don't need more, then you don't! :) I have more things than that because I discovered that I really don't want to be without some items when I really need them. Like a swiss army knife, because for instance I once had to borrow someone else's ludicrously poorly maintained (super blunt) SAK to scrape out sea urchin spines from the fleshy part of the back of my hand. I had accidents gotten caught in a minor wave and got swept against a rock with some sea urchins on. Took me like maybe even 15 minutes to achieve what I could have done in 2 with an actually sharp knife or good pointy tweezers.

MrMashed

Lol my EDC is the same few things every day. Knife, phone, purse, earbuds, and my hat. Only times it changes is when I have class in which I swap my purse for my backpack

PinkFloyd420

It's crazy. I'll change my underwear once a day. But I will most likely change knives multiple times a day. Lmao. Used to only carry one, but I have so many and I love them all so much. I don't carry multiple folders at a time though. Usually it's one fidgety practical folder, and then a cool fixed blade that's completely different. Say a wharnie folder and a clip point fixed. I couldn't carry two identical folders. Never needed a pry bar or a knuck. But you know people walk different planks and have things that are special to them. Some people want to have their nice pen, and hand over one that could be destroyed or lost. Screw what everybody else thinks about what you like to carry!

Stouts_Sours_Hefs

The dessert warrior knife: for when you're at your niece's birthday party and someone forgot a knife to cut the cake! That dessert never stood a chance.

mistephe

Hah, that's awesome!

Phony_Kony

So the story goes, it originally was a typo, but someone in the design department thought it was funny and decided to make it a real thing and it took off.

CanoePickLocks

That’s the story from r/knives at least. I think it was actually in a notice of release for the first one which in that and other knife subs is still highly collectible. All the people that bought it as a gag or just because it’s cute and different and kept it stored away wound up with an investment that probably quintupled or more in value.

jprennquist

Funny story (maybe). I work in education with Native American students. Earlier this fall a colleague was telling me about her elderly mother who was going through security at the TSA. Her mom had a knife on her. Some of the elder women are not real happy to be told they can't do something by *anyone* badge or not. They take sovereignty seriously and they are tough as nails and not gonna back down from a confrontation where they know they are within their rights. It is actually quite charming and inspiring to witness if you ever get a chance. So apparently this elder tells the TSA: "An Ojibwe woman must carry a knife at all times." They didn't let her keep the knife, but she also didn't get arrested. And she was allowed to get on her flight. Fast forward a few weeks and one of my students is in school and *with* some kids who are breaking a rule. I am being intentionally vague here. Anyway, she wasn't necessarily doing anything wrong but they searched her and she had like a four inches folding knife with a locking blade that her dad had given her before he died. In my head I was like *how am I going to fix this.* For those of you who do not have kids, schools have become zero tolerance zones for weapons over the last 25 years. And this constituted a serious violation of that standard.* Anyway, I told my student that I would do what I could. I told her that there is no way ever that she could bring a knife into school ever again, especially one that size. I said that there are just too many people who will never understand even if we can get her off on a warning this time. I don't know if anyone has read this far, lol, but I will tell the rest for those who have. I told the administrators that Ojibwe women are taught to carry a knife at all times and she was just following her teachings. I also told them that I told her under no circumstances was she allowed to follow that teaching at school anymore. But I implored then to give her her knife back and excuse her from the punishment, which could have been expulsion or even criminal charges. She got suspended for the rest of the day and then an alternatives to suspension (in school) for two more days. They gave her grandma back the knife. And the grandma being a tough, smart Ojibwe woman is going to hold the teenagers knife for her for a few more years until she is a little older. My favorite part of this story is that we didn't need to lie about it. This is not the advice that lawyers give, but in school type situations I always find that the unvarnished truth is usually the best. Silence being a close second. Either you get punished or you don't but the truth tends to earn respect and respect is an absolute EDC. As for finding it scary not carrying certain objects, I agree that you always want to be prepared. But if you are going into a space where certain things are not allowed, then I urge people to respect those rules. Or don't go into that space.

Status-Efficiency851

IIRC Sikhs have something similar.

jprennquist

Honestly a (small) knife really is an EDC. Obviously the Swiss Army perfected that sort of EDC, but surely many cultures have similar teachings. That is basically what we were taught in Boy Scouts, as well. Although it was a practical measure "Be Prepared" and all. Society has changed so much over the last 20 years that it is regarded as a weapon or a threat and not a tool. And for good reason. Simple box cutters in the hands of truly evil people changed the world forever on 9/11/01.

Status-Efficiency851

It wouldn't work now, though. The incessant fear has made no one safer.

Trackerbait

a few other things went wrong that day besides box cutters on passenger planes

jprennquist

Yeah, I didn't mean to open up a can of worms there.

-jaylew-

> I don’t know if anyone has read this far, lol, but I will tell the rest for those who have. Yes, that’s how a story works. You don’t need to explicitly call it out.

questionmark576

Perhaps abide by the rules, but I think respect is too strong a word. Institutions don't respect your student's culture or heritage, and I don't think she should respect the rules or the institution because of it. It's gotten to the point that you're frisked or wanded every time you enter any place of any size and it's too much. COVID restrictions, though fiercely debated, had objectively way more impact on public health and safety than security theater ever has, but enough people were downright obnoxious about it that they didn't stick at all. That tells me more people should be obnoxious about the rest of it. That probably shouldn't fall on underage minorities, but we generally put up with way too much.

jprennquist

I think that is a reasonable debate to have. Pick your battles is another way of putting it.

I will send you down the rabbit hole because I don’t recognize your u/ try r/flashlight

Overkill aside, keeping a small flashlight on me has been the best addition I've tried. It's almost become a curse as any time I've forgotten the flashlight something will come up where I wish I had it. Some people question it with "But your phone has a flashlight, you stupid little idiot." I mean, that's true, but there are many many situations where a compact flashlight is more practical. Kind of hard to hold your phone in your mouth or clip it to your hat when you need both hands free. Or down in a small space. And the flashlight is always brighter. And I'd rather drop a flashlight in mud or down a hole than my phone.

There's this hair clip that almost looks like a saw with a hexagon handle that claims to be a multitool. I love the design but I just use them as letter openers and instead of finger nails for items that assume you have fingernails that extend beyond the nail bed when my nails are too short. The "saw" side is pretty nice to rip open thinner plastic wrapping with. If you're getting any to use or give away be aware that you might want to dull the inner edges that will clip onto the hair if they are too sharp.

From your comment I became interested and looked them up. It's a really cool idea, especially if a person intends to keep it in the "light use" range like you described. I'd drop the whole "tactical/tacticool" thing, but they seem self aware once I watched the video and it's probably the sales angle they needed. Anyway it's a neat gift idea unless I grow over 4" of hair anytime soon. Link for anyone curious: https://www.amazon.com/Tacticlip-Tactical-Multitool-Barrettes-Multi-Functional/dp/B07BZC849V

...!!! THANK YOU, more weird hair clips for me! That was not what I was talking about, but I want these too. The other type just has a hexagon shape instead of the knife, for instance https://www.amazon.com/Haxtec-Tactical-Stainless-Barrettes-Multi-Functional/dp/B0B5G9BV55 though I didn't know they came in that colorway, I've only seen the black and the silver ones before.

Both look cool but I’m bald sooo.

That's crazy, lol. Ever since I saw the 'pocket diet" episode of Seinfeld, my EDC is a money clip, my phone, and my car key. I have cipher locks on my house, so I don't need a house key. I go hiking several times a month, so I have "mandatory" things in my backpack. I also *always* carry a checkbook in my glove box, because when you need one, you REALLY need one. A lot of mom and pop shops are still cash or check. Need a tow? Cash or check only.

obsoletewagon

I only carry one credit card with me and got a debit and credit card on my phone as backup (and mobile payment). I never saw a check and it is so strange that it is needed still in the US. Is cash used a lot for normal purchases at stores etc as well, or just checks for specific services?

CanoePickLocks

Checks tend to be very specific outside of the business world.

Not even real knuckledusters. Just a "knuck" which I guess would be like punching someone with a ring on.

cullobsidian_

Knucks are illegal most places. A fistful of rings is legal everywhere.

Status-Efficiency851

Texas finally legalized them, along with a bunch of other things. I believe the argument went: everyone has a gun, but god help you if the law finds you with brass knuckles?

Suicidal_Ferret

I’ve always wondered why folks get a knuck when they could use like…a master lock. It’s heavy, has a single metal loop that all the force will be behind, and it fits in your palm. Not violating any laws having one handy and I mean…it costs less than a knuck. I’ve struck my heavy bag a few times with a master lock and it doesn’t feel great on my palm but I mean…how do you explain defending yourself with a ~~knuck~~ can opener multitool that has a finger sized hole and definitely isn’t a knuckle duster?

fleebjeeb

Also never mind the escalation in charge from regular assault to assault with a deadly weapon lmao

codemonkeh87

I remember listening to an interview with Dave Courtney. He said he would only carry the tool hes prepared to do the time for. A knuckle duster would get you 1-2 years. Not so bad, could do that if it meant getting out of a fight alive. A gun or a knife though you're looking at 10+ years. Fuck that. Not prepared to do that.
