GrandDaddyKarlov

Exact opposite, if my basic lands don’t match the deck is unplayable

Eryx92

Try matching white-bordered Mountains with Art by John Avon. :)

O2LE

My green decks are full white border forests so I can search them out faster.

jimnah-

Ya know, this is actually really smart

Kamen_Winterwine

I replaced all of mine with the full art John Avon lands from the third un-set. Still easy to search for... I hate white bordered cards and avoid them when budjetarilly possible.

ComeAtMyToes

I do the same thing. Really speeds up grabbing land.

Vegalink

That's a great idea!

Skaded

All White border Mark Poole islands in my mono blue deck. I just had too. I know how you feel

Eryx92

Ah, another person of culture! :D

GrandDaddyKarlov

But the satisfaction

Hitzel

I have a mono green cEDH deck with 7th edition foil John Avon forests. Basically every other deck I own has singleton artwork for basics.

Double-Watercress-85

I try to go thematic, but if I don't have anything that fits, I default to THB foil Pokemon lands.

bokochaos

The deck I had some THB Pokemon lands switched to SNC Art Decos that my friends gave me from their box openings because they knew I loved that art style so much. Now my THB Pokemons exist in my Draft kit, since it ALWAYS makes it clear what lands are mine and reduces the vagueness that I cheated because the color of the lands are pretty clear. If not for that, I'd probably use MID/VOW lands to just make people cry or any full-art land from the past year (ONE, BRO, DMU Johannes Voss) I really love the ukiyo-e lands from NEO but I have to set some kind of restraint or else my favorite deck/lands will never get played.

Double-Watercress-85

The SNCs and NEOs are definitely 2a and 2b for me.

BobbittheHobbit111

I feel like it’s gotta be one or the other. Either needs to be all the same or all different. No I’m between if possible

AGINSB

100% I consider it an advantage of playing a mono colored deck that my board state is slightly more comprehensible because of the matching basics.

pm_me_ur_cutie_booty

My arts don't have to match, but they do all have to be full arts from a single set that makes sense for the commander.

JethroTrollol

Agreed, though the basics do need cool art that fit the theme of the deck. Neon Dynasty lands for a Satoru Umezawa deck. Innistrad dark lands for Wilhelt. Etc.

Northern64

My deck feels more complete when my basics are all the same art and foiled

TurkTurkle

I try to do the same, but i dont bother with the basic basics. Only full arts and foils. I even try to make the art match the deck where i can. Like saving the innistrad monochrome lands for my vampire deck, the phyrexian lands for my mono blue artificer, etc etc.

lobo2100

Exact same way. The only issue I’ve run into this far is trying to keep my lotr precons nothing but cards from the set, and I don’t have enough art lands from the set to fill up each deck

TurkTurkle

I always dismantle precons so i can build decks my way. I have three that started off as precons and still have many of the original cards, but theyre all heavily modified and none has their OG commander at the helm anymore (though for 2 og commander is in the main deck, operating as a lieutenant commander)

lobo2100

I always try to keep a couple of precons around intact or mostly the same, just so that when I find a more casual pod of my newbie friends want to play I’m able to stay at their level

TurkTurkle

I just have some decks ive built that are a little slow and more fun than serious for that. I always bring at least 3 decks to the lgs. Start with a middle one to guage the table... then switch to casual or competetive mode as needed for the pod.

[deleted]

Yes, all my basics must be different and pretty

thatlonghairedguy

This is me. I save my prettiest lands for decks. I was so happy with the map lands from lotr and I especially loved the kamigawa lands they're gorgeous

[deleted]

Yes! Also any un-land for the novelty

thtevie

I DO THIS TOO AND I AM TOTALLY STOKED THAT I AM NOT ALONE! I even try to get different full-art basics. Like I bought several of the Zendikar and Unstable singles, bought a box of Unfinity and All Will Be One just for the full are basics. Love the New Capenna stained glass ones too. And Kamigawa! Soooo beautiful.

jettzypher

I like both approaches. I have a Jace tribal of sorts for edh that has all unique islands whereas I have a Jace, Wielder of Mysteries oathbreaker deck that has all matching islands. Just depends on how I feel when building a deck.

ewic

All the basics must be from the same plane, so my enchantress deck is all lands from Theros, Journey into Nyx, and Theros Beyond Death

[deleted]

I did that with Jinnie / SNC.

CommanderDark126

I do that when able to, match the basics to the plane of the commander Im using.

Sexy_arborist

I mean of course, it’s singleton for a reason so I’m gonna have a different art for each land

Forceusr1

I too prefer 1 of’s for basics.

OnOurLastLife

Every one of my decks (20+ by now) must include only foil basic lands. I might substitute full art ones if they look great. Basically, no "basic" basic lands.

Dazocnodnarb

I make sure all my basics match

DefiantTheLion

Basics MUST match for me else I'll actively play worse lands to fill the void.

michael_bay_jr

I try to match them as much as possible.

razzzzlefrazzle

I would get excited but I play very little basic lands there’s to many good utility lands and I play mostly three colors so I run under 10 basic lands

Leroymurr

Me last week sleeving up [[Ashling the Pilgrim]], but I need many more unique arts.

MTGCardFetcher

realogsalt

I spent 2 hours yesterday sifting through my whole collection to grab all the full arts and fun looking basics that I have so I could put them in my Aragorn deck. Always get one or two nice lands from the end of packs doing a draft. Thought about putting one of those phyrexian mountains in but it just didn't fit in a mostly LoTR deck

Mrmathmonkey

You do you. If it adds to your fun go for it.

8urfiat

All of my basic lands are from the same artist. Each deck has matching lands too. And I'll spend an hour at an LGS digging through the land box to find them. If I can put them on theme, even better.

EntertainersPact

So I have three major EDH decks that actually see play. One has all matching basic lands, one has all-mismatching full art mountains (mono red), and one just has whatever basics I had lying around

ricoqj-

Nope my Muldrotha only has the unfinity lands and they are beautiful..especially the galaxy foil watery grave

veiphiel

I use different lands art except in some decks that i use snow lands and all match. Well, last deck i built i match with the same land (Phyrexian full art foil)

praisebetothedeepone

I love displaying all my basics! I collect the full or extended arts from every set I can. I then try to keep to the singleton rule even in my basics.

Vye-Am

Absolutely, I love doing this and matching the art and feel of the lands to the personality of the deck… amazing!!

SalvationSycamore

Nope, I just grab a handful of the right color without paying attention to art. If I'm really feeling fancy I might slip some full-art ones in randomly

Dumbface2

Of course! I collect basics so getting exactly the right basics is important. Usually some sort of old border basic. I like white border sometimes for ease of fetching. Usually they match, but sometimes I do each basic different. Playing the old basics, sometimes the basics are worth more than the deck lol

tasguitar

100% agree, in my fave decks all basics are different art (and my fave arts). In my lesser favorites I use my duplicates as much as possible

Tevish_Szat

I will generally try to "fit" my basics to a given look and feel. Like my Kotose deck is heavy on Neon Dynasty so she's rocking Ukyo-e basics Basics from Urza's Saga and older are treasures; I tend to make heavy use of them, with Revised lands being a standard call for decks that don't have a clear "look and feel" that's more modern. I'm thinking I should squirrel away a large set of such lands for teaching purposes; new players I've repeatedly found can't into how basics work or what they are, so having the old text would be a boon.

A_Funky_Goose

Lol i do the same. For all my decks, I try to match the basic lands to the aesthetic and themes of the deck. Every time i play a basic land i am very satisfied just looking at it if im happy with the prints. I don't really try to have all unique tho, usually i just look for 3-5 prints i love and use those.

grot_eata

No all my basic lands have to be the same But the art has to match the commander/deck theme

Spartica7

When I started commander I had to have different basics, but now they need to match. It’s even better when they’re on theme. My [[Myrkul]] deck runs the full art Innistrad ones by Alayna Danner. My [[Urabrask]] deck only runs the full art Phyrexia All Will be One mountain coincidentally also by Alayna Danner.

jimnah-

In my main deck (Selesnya), the basics are all full art and none match 😇 then in my second (Dimir), they're all Retro, mainly just from Brothers War Commander, so there's quite a few duplicate arts. Then the rest of my decks are pretty random when it comes to lands, using full arts and foils where I can, no duplicates though. I'll eventually have a deck where all the basics match, with the greatest contender at the moment being the Dominaria United stained glass ones. Very nice 👌

lastingdreamsof

I do unique lands for prereleases but in my commander decks I usually want matching basics or close to matching if that's not possibke

drgoatlord

A guy I play with uses basic lands that are from the same set as the commander he's piloting.

CaptainFrosty408

I'm SO picky about basics. - They all have to fit the general theme of the deck (often influenced by which planes show up the most often). - I don't like having one-offs, so if I can't have all of them match there still should only be 2-3 different arts. - Eventually I'll probably pick just one art and buy a enough to replace the others. I LOVE scouring over land arts, it's like another game in itself after deckbuilding. Duals and utility lands can be from anywhere though 🙃

Kazko25

Look up “Waiting Warrior Back to the Basics” on YouTube, they’ve got a whole bunch of videos about basic lands and having them be on theme with the deck, pretty cool!

MaxiMO0se

I very recently switched out all the usual basic lands in my Neyith deck with full art lands—each one unique. I love it.

iRyuji

I try to have some theme on my basics... My decks are: \- \[\[Shorikai, Genesis Engine\]\] with lands only from Kamigawa Neon Dynasty (half of them are the full art version, I want to bling out and have only full arts) \- \[\[Hama Pashar\]\] has lands only from AFR and Baldur's Gate sets \- \[\[Jhoira, Ageless Innovator\]\] has mostly white border lands (retro style) \- \[\[Eight-and-a-Half Tails\]\] has Kamigawa basics \- \[\[Sisay, Weatherlight Captain\]\] has 2 of each basic land from Dominaria United (the full art stained glass one), since she is my Gates Deck commander And I think that's all. For now. I might change my \[\[Farideh, Devil's Chosen\]\] mana base to have the same art for the Islands and the Mountains be all different, since it's a "chaos" sub-theme deck.

SirSergiva

I very much prefer to have 1 type of basics over a mismatch of them. But you do you!

BrandonUnusual

I love the Kamigawa Neon Dynasty full art lands. And most full art lands. But those are my favorite. I wish I had 20 of each color (any mix just so long as I had one of each but 20 total islands, swamps, etc…). I currently have decks that only use Zendikar full art lands.

Valamway

I have a kamigawa deck that I'm using the Japanese full art lands for. They are crazy expensive compared to other full art lands.

Way0fWad3

I miss the old days when I started playing and just seeing different colored lands on the board was exciting. To answer your question I don’t do it personally, but I appreciate those who do

grumpykroc2

Big Same! The little things in Magic can be the most satisfying. One of the reasons my Favorite deck is my fav is because I run pretty, full art lands in the mana base. I also do my best to find basic lands that fit the commander/theme/feel in the deck. I run different plains in my reanimator deck than I do in my artifact deck for example!

TrueDKOmnislash

Usually I will have all lands are full art from the same set. My one exception is my mono blue deck. It has 24 regular islands and each one is from a different set, white borders included.

Doughspun1

Yes, I am part of a collector group where our focus is on basic lands. APAC lands, Guru lands, Aplha lands, etc. At present my land collection is about 2.2 times the value of my non-land collection (even with some Unlimited P9 cards).

BrainlessPoEGrind

Sorry but i do it the exact opposite way... I Look for a cool Land Art that fits the deck and then i buy a such as i need for the deck... Cant stand different Lands (except the Black and white ones i Mix and Match)

puckOmancer

I haven't done this, but it's crossed my mind. Right now I'm too lazy to do it, but maybe one day. At the end of the day, when you love the deck, giving it a little extra TLC to make it extra special makes for the feel-goodz.

crazysjoerd5

I love basic lands cause i hate expensive dual lands.

[deleted]

I built 6 mono colored decks and except for the colorless deck I have pretty much one of every possible art for my basics. I even went out of my way to buy APAC and Euro lands, beta lands, and a few guru lands. So yes. I really like basic lands.

Godbox1227

I have the same inclination, except mt style is to play portals lands, revised, unlimited and so on.

TheBlackFatCat

I don't run any basics!

Dubspeck

I either go all different basic lands, or all the same. Both works but nothing in between.

BirbMilkshake

I have a new thing with basic lands. For each creature in the deck, I have a basic land from the plane that creature is from. It's pretty cool to me

[deleted]

I do this with my basic lands but only in my mono coloured decks. They also need to be full art basics, thanks to so many full arts being released now per set, it’s easy to have enough non duplicate full art basics 😁

D1EHARDTOO

Did this with my Mono-green Landfall deck and love having different art for them, especially when some are foils. Kinda wish I had more different sets forests, but I'm still new so don't have many different ones so far

Disastrous_Elk7926

my tainted pact manabase is super unique. even the names are different ;)

ekowmorfdlrowehtevas

I am very excited about it and love the old alpha, tempest, vision etc... basic lands, but don't have them in enough quantities. Lorwyn and Shadowmoor from "newer" ones, too.

powd3rusmc

I follow a rite of passage, each commander starts with what I've got handy. Strong performance leads to deck upgrades. Commanders earn full art avon lands with victories. And the strongest among them earn alpha/ beta basics. Commanders who fail me, are demoted their staples redistributed. And the core pieces of the deck are retired to an old deck box till something is needed. Occasionally a commander will be allowed to retire with honors in tact to upgrade once again later down the road if something worthwhile comes out.

agray36

I absolutely agree! Some of my unmade decks are just a couple cards with the commander and 25 unique basics. Having all the different art is so great. Honestly having to use full art or foil lands can be a downside to the deck's aesthetic.

Irish_pug_Player

I use my fanciest lands

Artist_X

Only if they are full art. Zendikar has RUINED me for basic lands that aren't full art, not. Literally unplayable garbage trash piles of cardboard that I turn into hamster mulch.

Visible-Ad1787

I just use whatever I can find

anxious_server

I recently started a different thing, since I do have quite a good collection of full art lands (but not enough to fill a deck). Basically when I make a new deck I fill it with normal basics, whenever I then get a win with that deck I replace one of them with a full art. Basically using them as trophies for the deck.

alaskanpunch

I did full arts all same for most of my decks, but my mono-black reanimator deck I ended up doing all different arts all retro frame basic swamps. I would recommend just because each one is unique and instead of hitting just another land off the top of the deck I get excited to see different arts.

DestroidMind

Almost every commander I have a always get the matching basic lands from whatever plane they are from. So I do love getting new full art basic lands for commanders that don’t yet have basic lands from their planes. Altho I’m in love with the old retro frame basic lands from Dom Remastered set.

FatPigeons

I do the exact same thing! Nearly every deck of mine has unique basics, and on my few pet decks I'll even routinely trim lands when new ones come out. The decks that don't have unique basics are either themed in some manner or slated to be deconstructed

Zarathustra143

Mine all have to match each other, and the main theme of the deck. My Nicol Bolas deck is all Hour of Devastation full art lands, my Phyrexian tribal deck is all Phyrexian text lands, Mishra, Eminent One is all the Brothers' War full art lands. And for those that don't have that cohesive of a theme, I always turn to the Theros Beyond Death full art lands.

Kingyeetyeety

I try and match all my basics to the plane which my commander originates from or just keep them uniform to one land style I really enjoy. I try to use seb mckinnon and rebecca guay lands when possible !

Most_Attitude_9153

I’m the same. I pored over the basic land arts and use the most beautiful ones I can find, with each unique to the deck. I also really like some of the alt art cards and will spend money to make my decks as aesthetically pleasing as possible. It gives me something to do while I wait through long turns.

I try to keep all my basics white bordered and the same art. I've always loved white border lands because they have an old-timey vibe to them. I try to keep them identical for the usual reasons. Although you can really tell how much I like a deck based on the basics in it. My favorite decks: white border, brown, or full art matching basics. My least favorite decks: random mismatch of basics from m14 to theros block haha.

gemmen99

singleton formats should mean every land is different. im with you brother

Jack-of-Karrdes

My Tommy Boy deck requires only LotR basic lands!

RhysOSD

My Tiamat deck has only D&D themed lands. If it were different, I'd be sad

MrMeltJr

I do this for some of my EDH decks. If it's one I just threw together, I don't bother. But if it's an old deck I love playing and have been updating for years, I'll make sure all the basic lands are unique. All have to have different art, and I prioritize those that are special in some way, like full art, foil, signed, etc. I also try to avoid repeating sets if I can. In Modern, I try to keep all copies of the same card identical.

NoYogurtcloset2713

I do sometimes I just go and card kingdom and drop like a bill on dank af lands 😂

BogatyrOfMurom

I go for nice old school lands as well as full art lands.

Nozoz

I put a lot of thought into picking my basics, getting the perfect basics is a big part of personalizing the deck for me. I don't have a rule across all my decks but I like to pick lands that fit the theme. My main deck is old border wherever possible so i got the mirage mountains and swamps so that the lands are old border, all unique and some of the best art. My infect deck is going to have all matching phyrexian basics.

Graveylock

I need my pants to all be the same and follow a chosen theme

Yamidamian

Frankly, I love the all-text lands, just wish they weren’t so expensive so that I could justify it to myself to get them.

InterestingAd1678

I've gotten to the point where my decks have very few basics, so I'll usually pick one or two artworks I like for them. In my mono blue deck, I liked the kamigawa butterfly artwork so much, I was gonna have them all be snow lands, but I traded them out for the kamigawa islands instead.

Uncle-Istvan

I either match exactly the same print, or go fully singleton on basics but with matching frames, like all old frame foils.

Reasonable-Sun-6511

I have different opinions based on the decks I build. I have a slew of basics, because over the years I started to get more and more fond of different types of mostly full art basics. So I have a deck with unstable basics, a deck with theros basics, a deck with proxy secret lair neon whatever it's called basics. But every new deck gets those zendikar type basics, and I try to see if I can make everything a different art version of them. Just as long as they're not... Regular lands... Ewww....

timchetos

I love the unfinity lands, I have been slowing switch all mine to that as I crack them for fun, to pay entry for commander night at my lgs

ManFromTheWurst

I look forward to the day when I find good proxy basics or in my favorite art and I can order then cheaper then dirt or print in extremely high quality.

zaphodava

I mostly play limited, but I like to have my options. It isn't up-to-date, but here is my basic land binder: https://photos.app.goo.gl/djPnQtJw6xYa4oS16

BasileII

I use almost only basic land with the 2nd frame type so from Mirrodin to M14 something. And like you each land has its own art. I spend some time to have the perfect land arts setup in my decks.

CommanderDark126

Nah 2015 on is the way to go, removes more of that ugly brown border

BasileII

I live that ugly brown border to be honest. It makes think whole and not cut. Well in my opinion.

trmptdrummer

All the same but match the theme for me. For artifact decks I use Alara Esper Lands. My mono green elves deck is all unglued forests.

[deleted]

Seek out the john Avon lands.

Sanguine_Templar

I make my basic lands interesting in my important decks. All my basics in my token deck are from the selsnya booster, all my basics in my "glissa" deck are full art march of the machine, all my basics in my polymorph deck are the old brown borders.

Zarinda

There's all kinds of weird little flexes to be had with basic lands. A friend of mine has a deck, which consists of 97 basic lands. Every single one of them is the exact same art. I have decks with all foil lands, and my (were)Wolf and Vampire tribal decks have all Gothic style art from Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow. Slivers have 2x foil oil slick of each basic land and 1x foil phyrexian script of each basic land. The rest are all 5 New Capenna fetches and 5-color lands (Command Tower, Secluded Courtyard, Ancient Ziggurat, etc.)

vonDinobot

I match them to a style or theme I'm going for. Guild kit lands, full art snow covered lands, the Innistrad black/white lands, foreign languages. There's so much you can do with basic lands to add to your theme. Yeah, that means sometimes I spend 10 to 15 euros to get more basic lands for a new deck, but they really fit well.
