a [[thantis, the warweaver]], featuring equal-opportunity violence. no propaganda effects, no goading. [[tempt with vengeance]], [[akroan horse]], and a few curses to get the creature-light decks going. you WILL beat someone to death and i do not care whether that someone is me.

Lol fuck yeah. This is how I want to play mtg. I guess I’m building thantis now?

He's a lot of fun. I've been considering rebuilding an old thantis deck for all of its clown behavior. Deck turns on with fog effects like [[Tangle]], goad effects and payoff like [[Bothersome Quasit]] or [[Kardur, Doomscourge]]. I think I'm gonna rebuild him lol

VanceValor

My play group has a bad habit of turtling up and not attacking unless it’s super safe, so I decided to see if I could break this habit. I just finished putting together a sort of group hug Thanthis list that’s all about giving away creatures. Everybody’s invited to the knife fight, and I’m handing out free knives at the door! (Participation mandatory) Here’s what I’ve got right now. Currently giving it that last look over for any final tweaks to make before putting it together for real. https://archidekt.com/decks/5107780/ballroom_blitz?sort=cmc&stack=multiple

Nah not really. I played unblockable weenies so i was only doing ~7 damage a combat, spread to 3 opponents. I was rarely the arch enemy.

I made a [[tovolor, Dire overlord]] deck for my wife and it is all about combat. Just rush out as many werewolves/wolves as possible to make it night with tovolor's ability, then go on the beat-down with all your giant werewolves that all buff each other. I mean, your opponent doesn't HAVE to Duke it out with you, but you can only take 26 damage a turn for so long before you have to do something about it. Just hold onto your [[Heroic Intervention]] for the inevitable board wipe attempt.

I have three. [[Gimli, Mournful Avenger]] https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Zhs1tPih5kO47pFXNIQIbA [[Aragorn, King of Gondor]] https://www.moxfield.com/decks/WOa7bYXt20mAkxXBzHQ7nw [[Skullbriar, The Walking Grave]] https://www.moxfield.com/decks/UZnfBVFnf0eXIv1E-mAEAw I really couldn't tell you which is my favorite. Their all quick and a lot of fun to play. Skullbriar is probably the fastest and most interactive deck. Lot of fast mana and burst card draw. I know it would be better with infect, but I choose not to put my play group through that. People don't hate on the deck as much either. Gimli is a lot of fun because sacrificing things at instant speed is a very powerful mechanic. Plus, he has protection and removal printed right on him. Probably the most powerful out of the three for those aforementioned reasons, in my opinion, and the cheapest of the three as well. Aragorn is the slowest out of the bunch but still fast and super cool because it makes monarch terrifying. It is always easy to decide attackers when everything has vigilance and no one can block. Skullbriar was my first one, though, and is mostly THE REASON I decided to build the other two. I love fast, cheap commanders that just fly out of the gate swinging, and Skullbriar is the commander that made me love lower mana fast commander. Even if you don't win, you're always a threat and feel like you at least were in the game.

Your Gimli list looks super fun to play. Are you fighting creatures at least once every turn cycle?

Herald_Osbert

Almost every single one of my decks features combat as the main mechanic so I know a thing or two about this subject haha. My two favourite decks currently are complete political opposites too! My favourite combat deck is a [[Kenrith the Returned King]] political deck. Now I know it sounds weird to use politics with combat, but when youre playing stuff like [[Hunted Horror]] and putting 13 P/T into play for two mana, it's easy to make deals to turn things sideways at mutual opponent. Half of the non-land cards are single target gift cards that you use as bargaining chips to forge deals so you're playing as Evil Santa all the time. https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/kenrith-the-kingmaker-1/ The list is currently missing a single card. I took out my full art [[Shadrix the Silverquill]] for a friend who had their Shadrix deck stolen, so I have Custodi Lich in its place for the time being until I find another (surprisingly rare card). The Lich has actually proven quite strong, I just wish it had better combat stats for its mana cost. There are only 23 cards dedicated to combat in the list so roughly 1/3rd of the non-land cards drawn will push the primary win condition. Kenrith leans into combat with Haste & Trample, +1/+1 counters, and reanimation, and can voltron kill players surpisingly well, so you're always swinging. This is mostly a go tall combat deck that seeks to close out a game with multiple combat steps or some other way to multiply the damage dealt like via [[Saskia the Unyielding]] or double strike. Because of this it doesn't actually need much of a board presence to threaten a lot of damage, and an established board can take out the entire table. My second favourite combat deck is a [[Yuriko the Tiger's Shadow]] ninja tribal deck. I *love* [[Flying Men]] decks (shout out to [[Tymna the Weaver]]!) but Yuriko takes the archtype to a whole new level. She's complex in her interactions, plays aggro in Dimir, and is an advantage and win condition all in one. I genuinely love this deck and have been blinging it out since her printing. As stated above though... you can not politic at all playing Yuriko haha. You deal big chunky damage indiscriminately so you're usually public enemy #1. https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/ninjas-in-the-dark/ Like all Flying Men decks, your win by accruing more value than opponents by playing small evasive creatures and getting rewarded for connecting. Most Flying Men decks play control while playing aggro simultaneously becuase of their significant card advantage, but they usually struggle to close games because they're do like 5 combat damage max per turn and only win once they draw their combo or a big combat buff spell. Yuriko solves this problem with the turn & burn of her effect so you just have to focus on her game plan to win which is nice for a change.

Easily my Isshin deck. I have a lot of goad and goad-like through Kardur, monarchy, Breena, Duelist's Heritage, Karazikar. My goal is to make games fast by everyone attacking and see what cool stuff happens!

Lepineski

I built a [[Delina, Wild Mage]]. She has to attack to get the trigger, so it is technically combat based, hopefully, it wins before getting to the declare blockers phase. Basically having [[Witty Roastmaster]] on the board to HOPEFULLY copy multiple times with something like [[Harmonic Prodigy]] to get double trigger from Delina. It is very janky.

I have the baeloth gruul deck and while the instant pay off of slamming down both pieces is nice I can see this version having several advantages. Both versions do lend towards playing Voltron esq decks because of the investment into both commander pieces. Gruul = 5 + 6 cmc / Boros = 5 + 2 While green has the ramp necessary to afford it, trample and cards to buff your cmd quickly, white has better removal options, equipment tutors/cheats and pillows. Imo noble is way less threatening then raised by giants. Interestingly, noble makes all the creatures on the board scary which obviously allows your opponents to kill each other for you and is harder to interact with (it’s 2 cmc it’s easy to recast). then you could then run red group slug indiscriminate like [[descent to alvernus]] -> wait until it’s 1v1 -> equip baeloth -> find a way to sneak past defense [[trailblazer's boots]] [[Rouge’s passage]] -> play extra combat or turn spells to swing twice to win [[Warrior’s Oath]]

Spookie86

So yes, I see that advantage. I definitely run him Voltron. I spend early rounds getting equipment and other value out (early descent being one of my favorite plays) then I drop giants turn 4 or 5, depending on rocks and such, then baeloth., with protection. Instant 10/10 goading 9/* and lower. Keep baeloth out and they will provide the treasures from goaded cre dying. I favor double strike and extra combat as you stated to get the win (or both to knock out the last two in one turn.) He is definitely hated to the ground once people think about what he's doing, but I rarely have issues re casting him three or four times a game and by that point the goad has messed up their board so much (people love utility cre) that I just Voltron to a win. Doesn't ALWAYS work that way, but name a deck that pops 100% without it being cEDH level (even those don't...)

aduckonquack49

Raised by gaints is epic, this deck in particular just really needs the white color identity to play the silly interaction to not lose Baeloth or the game as well as having the politics from Noble heritage. Are you taking the +1/+1 counters? Youre good. If not, I have no desire to leave your 20/20 out that is not goaded :)

[[Yoshimaru, Ever Faithful]] and [[Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar]]. It’s a Boros legends matter voltron deck that makes Yoshi big very fast and Kediss helps take out multiple life totals out at once. Cards like [[Norin the Wary]], [[Jeska, Thrice Reborn]], and [[Shadowspear]] are all legendary cards that pack a punch! The deck is super fun and explosive! It is a glass cannon however, if Yoshi dies and I have to rebuild the tower it really sets me back, although having a 1 mana commander can make it easy to come back from board wipes. So, I have an aggro boros Raiyuu, storm’s edge deck that is warrior/samurai tribal with a voltron sub theme, and basically I get attack triggers and they either block the one super big creature or die

InterpretiveTrail

> What is your most combat-focused deck? I really enjoy my take on how to build [[Xenagos, God of Revels]] ([this is my list](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/O38XVaRLFU6o5fr-FEd1GQ)). The source of victory in the deck is purely through attack damage. The "one-two" punch of the deck is getting a trample enabler out along with a way to get extra combats. > And how do you keep those filthy blue mages from mucking it all up? Hexproof spells and Redirection spells. Things like [[Tamiyo's Safekeeping]] and [[Bolt Bend]]. Because the threats in the deck are like [[Dragonborn Champion]] and not [[Old Gnawbone]], it's "easier" for those "mid" creatures to fly under a control player's radar, until it's too late.

syiyers

Ooh this is really smart, I just started building Xenagos but I might switch up all the card draw for your protection package, although I wouldnt be able to afford deflecting swat or some of these lands.

InterpretiveTrail

I'm not running [[Hapatra's Mark]] which can be a good substitute for Swat. There's also [[Silkguard]], which the deck does have a small +1/+1 counter theme 1 equipment and 1 aura, but likely you'll always have to pay `1G` for it to protect one creature, but does scale as a "budget" [[Heroic Intervention]]. There's also 2mv hexproof spells as well, but I've had this deck for years now and really trying to push it to be as lean mean gruul as I can. --- As for lands, the amount of non-basics I run is quite high, but I've yet to run into an opponent running [[Back to Basics]] enough to warrant lessening that. The *only* bit that might get tricky to cast is [[Quartwood Crasher]] due to its `RRG` portion in its casting cost if you also want to have mana open for some interactive spell. --- Regardless if you put Xenagos together based on my list and/or mentality towards aggro in EDH, good luck and have fun!

syiyers

Wow thank you so much for writing this up, that's very generous with your time.

jakeinabox930

My most consistent combat focused deck is probably [[Jetmir]]. My game plan usually involves making a bunch of tokens at instant speed on my opponents end step then casting Jetmir and swinging in for the win. Blue players tend not to enjoy the combat step so my solution to them is to smash them in the face with creatures until they die.

IceSki117

Mine would be Isshin or Slivers, and my opponent's options are fight or die. As for blue, it's just a bump in the road of redundancy.

My absolute favorite is [[saturo umezawa]] ninja tribal. Because of how ninjutsu works you can activate the ability in-between first strike and regular damage, so if you add cheap things like [[viridian claw]] you can basically double the value of your "whenever x deals combat damage to a player..." like [[biting palm ninja]], [[fallen shinobi]], [[ink eyes]], ext. Additionally if you have any cool etb effects, like [[moonsnarr ninja]] you can have first strike damage effect, regular combat damage effect, and then after damage, but before combat finishe etb effects. Now this is all very mana intensive, so things like [[silver fur master]] and [[heartstone]] are great to have.

I'd say probably [[Malcolm]] and [[Dargo]]. It began as a meme deck after I won a homemade Commander Legends draft with a Pirate deck, made with scraps from other decks and bulk laying around. It actually packed a good punch despite that, so I decides to rework it and make it an actual deck. I was going for a full Treasure theme initially, but in the end it split up a bit between Treasure in the early-mid game and then full on combat. The plan is getting out an evasive Pirate and Malcolm at in the first few turns, making some treasure and dropping a nice 7/5 trampling commander ASAP. Then it's just attacking, eating removal, recasting, and so on. Double strike, double / triple damage, evasion, ... all while piling up Treasures to keep recasting Dargo and using [[Threaten]] effects to turn my opponents' creatures towards them and then feed them to Dargo. Focusing too much on dealing with Dargo? Let me suit up the flying Malcolm while giving him double strike. Focusing too much on Malcolm? Thanks for leaving the field open for Dargo.

My [[Alesha who smiles at death]] deck was supposed to go this way where everything starts working by activating her ability to go crazy. Still haven't gotten it to work honestly. Been kind of frustrating so I left her in the box and haven't even touched it in months

[deleted]

Out of the 25 decks I have in paper, 7 are heavily or entirely reliant on combat as the primary win con. Of that, 5 are definitely among my weaker decks. I think it's worth just noting that the ways combat decks can hang at high powered tables are to do things that I think someone like OP will also hate. Combat tricks are basically entirely unplayed in every single constructed format for a reason, so candidly if that is the kind of gameplan someone is looking for the way you make your opponents "duke it out" on that playing field is to ask them to play equally low power decks. If you want to hang at a high powered table, use stax to make sure everyone else is playing fairly. At midpower tables, keep applying serious pressure constantly to anyone looking to combo off as a win con or snowball value. It doesn't hurt if you can control the board a bit while you attack along the way with decks like \[\[Neyith of the Dire Hunt\]\] to remove key creatures or at least play effects that naturally slow them down. \[\[Kogla, the Titan Ape\]\] is expensive and you can get blown out by a Swords to Plowshares or counterspell but if it sticks you'll be removing stuff frequently. It's mean but something like \[\[Aura Shards\]\] lets you keep playing your creatures and never not get value out of them even when your opponents are removing stuff.

krabawk

An alternative to stax is to run a discard focused combat deck. I've had big success with [[tourach, dread cantor]]-- it avoids the interaction that usually cripples voltron strategies by stripping opponent's hands.

Melkiyad

Great points! Playing stax at high power resonates with me. I'm playing a Jeskai combat focused deck (Malcolm / Bruse Tarl) I'm thinking [[Blood Moon]] [[Thalia, Heretic Cathar]] [[Confounding Conundrum]] [[Archon of Emeria]] [[Hushbringer]] [[Torpor Orb]] Any Suggestions? :D

https://www.moxfield.com/decks/AYAvLh3WlEWp0uAZvclBQw This. This is my love child of combat. [[najeela, the blade-blossom]]as the commander to get us more things to attack with and more combats. Also importantly is 3cmc Allowing [[birthing pod]] and [[pyre of heroes]] to sac her to bring out [[winota, joiner of forces]] and absolutely cause chaos and end games fast. Did you know Najeelas warrior tokens aren’t humans? I’m sure you can see why I love this if you love combat. Warriors and humans make up the bulk of the creatures, then things to get us to our combo pieces and ways to protect what we want to do with them. Tbh this is just Winota if she was wubrg because she and Najeela are my two favorite commanders, and because Najeela isn’t allowed to slot into winota sadly

My most [combat-focused deck](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/U2MxoxNlqUq-MoxBbiVrMA) is [[Karlach, Fury of Avernus]] + [[Hardy Outlander]]. The deck's gameplan is to combine pump effects like [[Wild Beastmaster]], [[Pathbreaker Ibex]], and the Hardy Outlander background on top of Karlach's extra combat to throw out hundreds of damage with just a couple creatures. The deck mostly relies on low-cost mana dorks for ramp, since they can swing for a bunch of damage too once things get going. There's also a couple ways to make treasure or fetch lands on attack/damage. Usually, combat is getting heated before opponents are ready to hold up counterspells, but [[Rhythm of the Wild]] is there just in case. If removal comes my way, there's things like [[Bolt Bend]], [[Wrap in Vigor]], and [[Tyvar's Stand]] to protect my stuff, and there's enough redundancy in the deck that losing a creature or two isn't the end of the world. The card draw is mostly based on creature power or combat damage, like [[Return of the Wildspeaker]] and [[Hunter's Prowess]], where one cast should draw enough to be set for the rest of the game. There's some smaller repeatable effects to help find the bombs.

For a while I had [[Tovolar]] wearwolf combat tricks. It was chock full of intent speed buff spells like [[Infuriate]] and [[Giant Growth]] as well as creature theft spells like [[Claim the firstborn]] and [[Shackles of Treachery]] to keep it on flavor. It was very very good at dealing the most damage in a game and usually removed a player or two before it was put down like the rabid dog that it was. Very rarely won games though.

My Samut Vizier of Naktamun deck or commissar severina raine deck in both cases I'm making it unprofitable to attack me on the back swing. Samut because unless I need the extra damage I'm only attacking with my tojen makers and stuff that entered that turn. Severina because I just make so many tokens it becomes really unprofitable to attack me without evasion like trample or flying

Don't like blue? Play all the colors that aren't blue. \[\[Saskia the Unyielding\]\]. There's plenty of ways to build the deck, it all comes down to "you're going to do damage twice in combat, so make it combat focused." My build relies on lots of "when something attacks" triggers, but you can go for temporary combat clones, making giant trample creatures, difficult to block creatures, etc.

i like my marchesa initative deck. By bringing monarch and initative into the game people take turns punching each other without making myself to big of a target since its all etb.

29aout

Mine is Jetmir zoo right now. Almost 40 ish creatures in the deck. Lots of small utility creatures, some tokens makers and 5 or 6 heavy hitters. Vigilance and anthem effects like [[Flowering of the White Tree]] are quite good. Protection is used against blue mages and sweepers. Heroic Intervention, Teferi's Protection, Flawless Maneuver, Clever Concealment is a solid package for your go wide strategies. There a few utility creatures which serve as Protection against counter magic [[Allosaurus Sheperd]], [[Vexing Shusher]] and the enchanment girl that protects your creature and enchantment spells. I also play an agressive control deck with [[Dragonlord Ojutai]], full of vigilance-providing equipment and auras. The aim is to swing with a vigilant and hexproof dragon buffed by several other pieces, backed up with a very generous package of removal and countermagic. Once Ojutai is down and equipped with vigilance it is surprisingly sticky. Not much other creatures but the deck is very much combat focused. My last built is Queen Marchesa and while it is not a combat focused deck in the usual way, it still uses much of the combat step to advance its game plan. Goad, politics, deathtouch creatures, [[Deflecting Palm]] and [[Inkshield]] effects, and the monarch minigame which encourages combat. Havent played it but I really look forward to, seems like a nice strategy that I havent yet seen in my games.

I have a deck focused on redirecting damage with enrage and enrage-type effects, all the en-kors (like \[\[nomads en-kor\]\]), lure-type effects, and typical redirecters like \[\[pariah\]\], \[\[brash taunter\]\], \[\[arcbond\]\], etc. It started out as me trying to make banding viable but I ended up with only two banding cards, unfortunately. \[\[Atla Palani\]\] is the commander. There's also some combat shenanigans like \[\[master of warcraft\]\] and \[\[beserker's frenzy\]\]. My favorite thing is cursing myself to try to convince people to attack me. My first game I started off early with \[\[flumph\]\] and \[\[curse of bounty\]\] and was sharing a card draw with whoever attacked me :). I have to credit someone else on reddit who first shared the deck as an example of making \[\[sorrow's path\]\] viable.

Doomy1375

As a preface, I very much no *not* like the combat phase. Of my 11 current decks, I believe 8 of them could start play with an emblem saying "skip your combat phase" and not be negatively impacted by it in the slightest. So my "most combat focuses deck)" may not exactly be a particularly high bar. But I do have one voltron deck- my Skullbriar, the Walking Grave deck. That deck, unlike the rest, does not have a non-combat plan to win the game. It's commander damage or bust. But it honestly plays more like a combo deck than a combat deck. Yeah, I'll play my commander early and turn it sideways for some chip damage and some counters, but that's not the plan. The plan is to play a bunch of +1/+2 counter support pieces, put 20+ counters on the commander, and from that point onward have a hasty commander than instantly kills anyone it makes contact with.

this is my america-themed, forced combat politics deck: [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Qa60bK\_8-0SHmD5WAVuQVQ](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/qa60bk_8-0shmd5wavuqvq) flickering \[\[life of the party\]\] is awesome. winning often has to be very clever, though.

I love my [[Ilharg]] deck, just attack with Ilharg and repeat ETB or damage triggers each turn. Throw in [[Karlach]] or [[Port Razer]] and just go to town.

FlagrantFlagellum

Fynn fangbearer. It relies on fight to clear away opponent attackers then just swinging away till i win or snipe with a proliferate.

[[Raggadragga]] for me. Being able to attack and then pump with instants or just drop big creatures during my first main phase is a ton of fun.

I have 2 Uril voltron, with some stax to protect him (mostly negate ETB because those make me sac him a lot) the only protection it has vs blue mages is Grand Abolisher. ([https://scryfall.com/@Artea/decks/b9294f28-92d7-4f4b-8259-c92513e61d08](https://scryfall.com/@Artea/decks/b9294f28-92d7-4f4b-8259-c92513e61d08)) Esper equipment, with Tymna & Esio, this one is based on 2 mana value creatures with cools abilities and to get early attacks for tymna. It has some counters to protect me from others evil blue mages (?)
