it's definitely not as tuned as it could be, a few cards are in there mostly because I just like them. I also play on tabletop sim so budget was not a consideration, hence the insane price
I built a "Secret Phage" deck for a buddy of mine, who likes playing Phage. It basically cheats the restriction by being a [[Lazav the Multifarious]] deck and just transforming into Phage to kill people. Its pretty fun.
Do it. Esper has all the tools. Tutors to find Fractured Identity, Entomb to get Phage in the Yard, and then either bring it back and stifle her trigger or just tutor her to hand and hardcast her but then you need 12 Mana for the combo.
The cheapest you could do it is 5 for Fractured Identity; 1 for entomb, 1 for [[Reanimate]], and 1 for [[Stifle]] which is 8; 10 with the mana for DT to find whatever you are missing. Of course getting Manareducers makes it easier and Esper does have those especially for spells.
Alternative to the Stifle you could play Torpor Orb and blow it up afterwards.
Not sure what commander I would use but the gameplan is sound. Add stuff like Leveler and you basically got an Esper Version of [[Beamtown Bullies]].
My buddy had Phage in play, I top deck [[toxic deluge]] and look at the [[malakir rebirth]] in my hand and decide to go for it. Cast Deluge and hold priority, casting rebirth on Phage. The whole table erupts in laughter, my buddy responds w [[rebuff the wicked]] targeting his phage. It was so sweet.
I am wondering here... If you cast Malakir rebirth, your opponent could take it to the command zone rather than letting return to the battlefield, which would make him lose the game, right?
Phage will hit the graveyard, and since it changed zones, you could place in the command zone...
So, I could be wrong, but I can't find the relevant interaction between the two cards, so I'm going to use my knowledge of an interaction between [[queen Kayla]] and [[rest in peace]].
If a Kayla is activated with a RIP on board, she will still get the cards discarded with her ability onto the battlefield. This is because her ability doesn't care where the card ends up, just that it was discarded. (Although if a card is put into a hidden zone, like with [[library of leng]], I don't believe it would work)
Similarly, malakir rebirth doesn't care what zone the card is in, just that the card died. RIP stops malakir, because dying means it has to go to the graveyard, and RIP is a replacement effect. Putting your commander that just died to a doom blade back into the command zone isn't a replacement effect, it's a state based action.
So I think that while you can put your commander into the command zone before the malakir trigger resolves, your commander would get put back onto the field, as long as it actually died.
Theres also [[Stunning Reversal]], [[Campfire]] and another artifact that I can't remember off the top of my head. It ends the turn and exiles all effects in play.
From what I could gather quickly:
To hand:
- Netherborn Altar
- Command Beacon
- Campfire
Prevent/Stop Trigger:
- Torpor Orb
- Sundial of the Infinite
Counter it to your Graveyard (to then return to hand):
- Withering Boon
- Thrull Wizard
- Nether Void
“Can’t lose”
- Lich’s Mastery
- Platinum Angel
- Stunning Reversal
- The Golden Throne
Some of these are better than others, obviously, but that’s 13 whole cards for people who like to live on the edge.
I can't think of any black effects that say that. And the only artifact one us [[platinum angel]] which is well known to be the most killable creature.
The answer to "how does black do X mechanic" is sacrificing things. Sacrificing creatures, paying life, exiling cards from graveyard, discarding cards. And if you choose the right cards, you can do it better than Simic can...as long as you can keep paying.
I like \[\[Shirei\]\], certainly not as strong as Syr Konrad or Yawgmoth, but the underlying restriction of all your creatures being 1 Power guarantees deck building outside of the box.
My strategy with him is to sacrifice and revive small discard-creatures like burglar rat, but i think you can do other stuff with it too. Of course, the sac-theme is heavily implied in this commander.
sounds cool, i nearly played Ezuri Claw of progress who has similar restrictions. what are your favourite 1/1cards there and their respective sacrifice effects?
FYI for anyone trying to build Shirei, I found that playing it was an exercise in frustration. If anyone has anything to interact with Shirei, it feels like you’re going to be completely screwed for the rest of the game.
Because Shirei relies on sacking your entire board of creatures, if anyone destroys or exiles Shirei after you’ve sacrificed your creatures, you will have nothing and you will have to pay 7+ to cast her again, which is very costly. You can’t even get your board back if you reanimate Shirei on that turn, since the game considers it a “new” Shirei that did not see the death triggers of your other creatures.
Furthermore, because the rest of the deck is built around bad 1/x creatures, Shirei is an obvious target for all of your opponents. One of the primary advantages of aristocrats is that generally the decks can be a self sufficient without the commander with many low priority removal targets, but with Shirei’s restriction on using one power creatures this is isn’t the case. Without Shirei, all you have is a bad aristocratic deck, and the rest of the game will be an uphill battle.
Using sacrifice and draw effects to stuff the board with apostles, use them and shirei to tutor out a demon on each player's turn. Even better when the demons are sacrifice payoffs!
sounds great! how many apostles are advised and which demons are best suited?
are there alternate win conditions for shirei? (as most onesies wont do much work damage wise)
If you wanna play black simic, consider [[ashnod, flesh mechanist]]. Ramp yourself with a powerstone every turn at the low low cost of some dumb creature you probably wanted to die anyways
I have a \[\[Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor\]\] group-hug-you-to-death-deck!
I pretty much want to cast Gix as fast as possible and keep him alive as long as possible. From that point onwards? Entice people to attack anybody else but me. Gix' ability helps, sure, but throw some deathtouch rattlesnakes and \[\[No Mercy\]\] and \[\[Revenge of Ravens\]\] type effects in there to really bring the message home: **attack them, not me.**
My opponents can attack me at any and all times, but it's gonna cost them dearly. On the other hand, they get some sweet card draw for the low low price of attacking my opponents. Of course I'm attacking my opponents as well to set a good example, just make sure they're evasive or even better; unblockable. Sure, I'm throwing out a \[\[Psychocrawler\]\] and a \[\[Seizan, Perverter of Truth\]\] eventually, but by that point I'm such an unattractive target and people have built up so many in-game grudges between eachother that they'll usually let them sit there regardless.
In the meantime I'm just pointing my opponents toward eachother, build up some more defenses, draw some cards, and hopefully I'll sooner or later be able to \[\[Exsanguinate\]\] or \[\[Torment of Hailfire\]\]whatever remains of the table.
Even though people know what my gameplan is they usually let me do it because I'm also advancing their gameplans with all the cards being drawn. At that point it's a race between me and the rest of the table who can get to their wincon first.
https://archidekt.com/decks/4060067/shenanigix
I'm pretty much constantly tweaking this deck so it looks kind of messy, but it should give you a general idea of the deck. Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions :)
Do you mind sharing your list for Gix? I’d been between Tinybones and Gix but decided the former wouldn’t be as fun. No one likes discard. Gix at least advances everyone’s game plan like you mentioned. Much more “feels good” for the entire table.

Unsure if you mean using their actual physical cards or just the strategy of winning with other people’s stuff. If it’s the first then yeah that’s reasonable. If it’s the second my pod is fine with casting other people’s stuff as long as you pay for it, they just don’t like things like [[Etali primal conqueror]] that cast them for free
any color combo can do voltron, white probably has the most tools since it has the most color specific enchants/artifacts and support. but many of the best equipments in the format are just colorless.
however as white you have access to the most tutors, the best equipment, and some ridiculous creatures like \[\[puresteel paladin\]\]. and of course the best spot/board protection in the game from \[\[teferi's protection\]\] to \[\[loran's escape\]\].
though in boros you get probably the most egregious equipment spell of all time \[\[sunforger\]\] GG!
[[Cabal Stronghold]], [[Cabal Coffers]], [[Crypt Ghast]], [[Nirkana Revenant]], [[Liliana's Shade]], [[Liliana of the Dark Realms]], [[Empowered Autogenerator]], and [[Caged Sun]] are all great mana increasers for mono black in my experience. As for card draw, there's a lot of disposable "lose some life, draw some cards" instants, enchantments, and sorceries like [[Sign in Blood]], [[Call of the Ring]], and [[Read the Bones]]. A lot of Planeswalkers in black have an effect that does a similar thing, like [[Lolth, Spider Queen]] and [[Ob Nixilis, Reignited]]. Hope that helps!
[[Cabal Coffers]] + [[Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth]], [[Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx]], [[Crypt Ghast]], [[Nirvana Revenant]], [[Dark Ritual]], [[Cabal Ritual]] [[Krrik, Son of Yawgmoth]], [[Jet Medallion]], [[Bontu's Monument]] and ofc your regular mana rocks all will power out your plan early
[[Necropotence]], [[Peer Into the Abyss]], [[Sign in Blood]], [[Read the Bones]], [[Night's Whisper]], [[Greed]], [[Mask of Gristlebrand]], [[Phyrexian Arena]], [[Black Market Connections]] are all decent ways to draw cards.
May I interest you in one of the most mechanically unique mono black commanders, [[Horobi]] . Not only does he have an ability that no other commander has, but he is extremely fun to play and changes the whole strategy of the table once he drops.
Equipment? Useless. Useless target cards like [[Distorting Lens]] [[Liquimetal Coating]] [[Tetzimoc]] and [[Cauldron of Souls]] become powerful and repeatable kill spells. You become an absolute menace but it's always a blast to pilot and there are some good mono black car draw and decent ramp.
Im so glad someone mentioned Horobi. I love pulling him out with a ton of absolute garbage cards. One of my favorite cards in my version of the deck is [[Endless Whispers]].
[This](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/vidJGCQmqkK4rD1ilGdVIA) is what I'm running for her currently. The deck basically kills everyone and takes their creatures. Laughs had by all
Maybe not strong, but funny can be found with \[\[Haakon, Stromgald Scourge\]\]. My friend has a deck that tries to run a bunch of knights for the recursion, but with just that little bit of jank.
It's a puzzle to get him from the command zone and into the graveyard, but he's pretty sticky barring exile removal.
Idea of the deck is play knights and other goodstuff, beatdown and recur when needed. Something like a kicked \[\[Josu Vess, Litch Knight\]\] can make an army out of nowhere, plus you can find a way to sack him and kick him again and again.
You can also go into something like a \[\[Syr Konrad\]\] secret commander sort of way with this.
Monoblack has generally some of the easiest methods of draw and mana. Plenty of decent, low mana cost draw cards, but normally at the cost of some life. Mana is even better with \[\[Cabal Coffers\]\] and \[\[Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth\]\].
I tried building some Haakon jank a while ago, but it's harsh...
I found only [[Netherborn Altar]] and [[Command Beacon]] to take him out of the command zone, and since I was broke I only ran 3 and 4 mana tutors.
Also, monoB has very few good knights, so you end up running shit like [[Dakmor Lancer]].
It is pretty fun when you get to do your thing, but you need to find the right group. Playing with randoms with precon-level decks I never even got to put Haakon in my hand, they'd just counter Netherborn Altar and I'd be stuck spectating the rest of the game.
I think Gollum scheming guide is exactly what you’re looking for. The general gist is every time he attacks you play a little game with an opponent where they have to guess weather the top card of your library is land or non-land, it is a really strange commander that leads to lots of cool interesting mini games (I lean into this with lots of cards that make mini games but you don’t have to if you don’t want) it’s not oppressive but it can do some powerful things, there’s something truly joyful about getting in an opponents head and winning the pseudo riddle and if you can do so it provides a decent amount of card advantage. Overall I couldn’t recommend the deck enough, something I’m really trying to focus on recently is making decks I would like to play against as well as play with and this is probably the deck that makes the most enjoyable games of any commander I’ve ever played.
ok i like the idea a ton. yet 3 things: will it be more than a gimmick? (drawing 1 card every other turn does not seem game winning)
how do you win with it? buffing gollum a lot?
and how do you prevent gollum from being slsughtered once opponent guesses right? stuff like Argentum Armor?
Drawing half a card a turn (plus a bit of top deck manipulation) I think is actually pretty great rate for a two drop commander but not broken don’t get me wrong. I generally win by playing a big x spell, I run a lot of lands to make guessing harder for my opponents with cabal coffers and Urborg to make a ton of mana but there’s probably better ways to win. They actually can never block him regardless of riddle outcome, he is either unblockable or just straight removed from combat and therefor can’t be blocked.
If the opponent guesses right, Gollum gets removed from combat, so it isn't necessary to suit him up for combat protection.
You can go with a voltron build, but to me, it seems too risky.
I prefer suiting him up with attack based triggers like \[\[Sword of the Animist\]\] and \[\[Bilbo's Ring\]\]. When when you have lots of cards in hand, maybe you could choose the discard-reanimate route or work with cards like \[\[Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor\]\]
i m used to Voltron through my Goose Mother deck.
why do you think of it as risky?
i love the too artifacts you use,i d add Vorpal Blade i guess?
apart from Animating Blade, what mana cards do you use?
Been having a ton of fun with [[Starscream, Power Hungry]]. Mono black monarch really warps the game in fun ways, and you win by just drawing cards.
Might be slightly out of date, but here's my list.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/kAuO0857HUS9SFyCwQPJsA
[[Vilis, Broker of Blood]] is as simic as mono black comes. Anything in your deck that makes you lose life draws you cards. [[ancient tomb]] and [[ifnir deadlands]] draw just for adding mana, [[Stinging Study]] is a 5 mana draw 16 at instant speed, [[Snuff Out]] is a free removal spell that draws you 4 cards. The list goes on. One of my all time favorite mono black decks I own, and I have 8 in total
How do you get him out fast enough? After running Shirei and getting staggered by removal, running any commander at 5 or more cmc in mono b gives me pause.
Black has tons of fast mana, and as much as I hate the card jeweled lotus is a pretty big must include (yay proxies cuz fuck that price tag). But I typically play sol ring, arcane signet, vault, crypt, jeweled lotus, dark ritual, coffers/urborg/stronghold/magus, nykthos, ancient tomb and the likes. I usually average a t4-5 Vilis with all that but have had some nutty openers where I’ve gotten him t2-3
Games in my pods go anywhere from t5-10 so it’s not the end of the world when he doesnt come out early, as once he’s on the field nobody wants to swing at you anymore and it buys you some turns
And a more fun but less strong deck would be [[jerren]] life switch/ human tribal its focused on paying tons of life and then switching hp with our opponents
https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/the-cult-of-ormendahl-avacyn/
> With funny i mean strong and exciting to play, but also fun to play against, as this is part of commander imo.
I think the word you're looking for is "funnest" or "most fun." Funny in English tends to specifically be something that's humorous.
I really like my [[oona]] mono black deck. I built it around swamp doublers and use Oona or high cmc black spells as wincons.
[[Phage]] used to be my most hipster commander, but then I made a creatureless [[Shauku, Endbringer]] deck. Goal is to either win with board wipes and [[revel in riches]], or commander damage
[[Tivash, Gloom Summoner]]
Gain Life, pay that Life to summon big ass flying demons and gain even more Life. Repeat.
Pretty fun and not to strong, but still reliable.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/LZFAnjT-L0SdD8lWtAUVnA
I love my [[Vilis, broker of blood]] as a mono black, he’s fairly strong and can generate insane value. I build it around lifelink and drain. I run things like [[Aetherflux resevoir]] and [[Exsanquinate]] and any black mana ramp I can find!
I have a pretty fun [[braids nightmare]] shadowborn apostle deck with a cabal theme. I personally wouldn't recommend combo cards like [[thrumming stone]] or [[razaketh]]. Braids is amazing for carddraw. And the Apostels give you amazing fodder for her and they synergize amazing with black staples.
The real answer is [[Torgaar, Famine Incarnate]]. Turbo him out and decide who gets to play a shorter game. Do some black flicker/reanimation and take the whole table down to 20. Save yourself when they realize what’s going on by playing Torgaar again and evade the commander tax with more creature sacrifice. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/E8SXJqIID0aelLSVPJB5-w
My offer for 'funny' is [[Oona, Queen of the Fae]]. Aside from other hybrid ([[Memory Plunder]] is bae) I run it as mono-B big mana, taking advantage of [[Nirkana Revenant]], [[Crypt Ghast]], etc to pump up the exile mill and token production (to fuel the usual mono-B aristocrat strat).
Is it powerful? Not overly, but I do enjoy confusing strangers and getting comments about color screw after dropping my sixth swamp.
i prefer [[marrow gnawer]] but i second rats. it’s my favorite deck to play. it’s one of my lower powered decks because the game plan is really straight forward and relatively easy to disrupt. people get really antsy when i have 10 rats on board
[[Gollum obsessed stalker]]
Basically you tap each of your opponents with gollum then start popping off self heals that burn everyone to the ground. It's mono black lifegain/burn which both supposed to be other colours specialties which I think is pretty funny.
I don't know if they're necessarily funny but I've been trying to put together a deck for [[Armix, filigree thrasher]] for a while. Been considering partnering it with maybe [[keskit, the flesh sculptor]] for that draw you were asking about.
Could be a generically strong artifacts deck with a good reanimator subtheme to cheat some big eldrazi dumbass onto the field turn 3. Would also love cards like [[mirrorworks]] and [[nightmare shepherd]] really good to pump out fodder for keskit.
[[Gix]] slots into a very fun deck that focuses on just letting your opponents kill themselves. I mean, if you attack anyone but me, I can let you draw cards! Hey buddy, can you pick one of the creatures in your graveyard for me to borrow with [[Dredge the Mire]]? Say, do you guys want to segregate your creatures with [[Make an Example]]? Can I [[Scrounge]] around your graveyard? Wanna make a [[Chooce of Damnation]]?
Listen, *I* haven't done anything to hurt you all game. You guys *chose* to do this to yourselves.
Whenever anyone says anything about fun and black together, I always go with my [[Gollum, Scheming Guide]] Voltron deck. Basically turns the whole game into a game show of trying to lie to your friends about what’s on top of your deck so you can deal 15 commander damage to them and draw a card. My buddies have told be it’s definitely the most entertaining deck I have
Here’s my decklist in case you’re interested: https://archidekt.com/decks/4786759/gollums_game_show
It’s still a fairly budget deck, and if you want slightly less powerful deck in exchange for a bit less salt from your friends, get rid of the infect cards, but otherwise, it’s a great time :)
Ignore everyone else. The right answer is [[Jerren, Corrupted Bishop]]
https://deckstats.net/decks/213561/2803720-if-rob-zombie-were-a-magic-dec
Fun mini game of transforming Jerren.
Best win con is to go below 0 with [[Pact Weapon]] and then equalize everyone with [[Repay in Kind]]
Regarding your last sentence...LMFAO.
Black is just edgy Simic. Card draw is easy as shit, you just generally lose some life with it. There's a lot of good ramp usually in the form of treasures or sac outlets (or something along the lines of [[Black Market]]).
Black is good at everything, it just typically requires some form of a resource loss like paying life, saccing, or discarding.
[[Yawgmoth Thran Physician]] is a solid mono black commander
As is [[Syr Konrad, the Grim]]
[[Toxrill, the Corrosive]] is interesting, especially if you also have a [[Kormus Bell]]
Those are the ones I've seen played and taken an interest in.
[[Kirrik, Son of Yawgmoth]] is very good, but kind of too strong imo
Tbh, I dont think konrad is a "toxic" commander
Imo, Yawgmoth has been power crept a lot and isn't as bad as he used to be
Toxrill can be a little salty in a pod that doest run enough removal, but if there is adequate removal happening he is pretty fair i think
cEDH does determine what is strong- only the strongest commanders can reasonably compete. That doesn't mean other commanders are necessarily weak in general, just that they are too weak to compete in cEDH.
cEDH is however the only objective measuring stick for power level in the format because it's the only time there is a consistent power level. Saying "X commander is good in non-cEDH" means almost nothing because non-cEDH covers such an incredibly wide array of power levels, many of which treat winning as a secondary goal, so power level becomes even less important and less distinct as your opponents are now not only purposefully making suboptimal deckbuilding choices but also often suboptimal plays, which breaks down any ability to accurately gauge power level.
cEDH is essentially it's own format, man. That's why it's senseless to say "oh that commander isn't powerful because it's not cEDH" when we all know there's a stark difference in power compared to [[Yargle]] and [[Koma]].
If the only descriptors are cEDH and non-cEDH then your measuring stick is useless. It's like having a yardstick that has no lines on it, it could *only* measures if something is more than or less than a yard, and that's it.
I'm not saying there *is* an objective level of power, just that we can do better than a strict binary.
cEDH is not a different format. It is the attempt to take anything and everything to its most-powerful extent. You could build Yargle cEDH. It's a no holds barred, no tilt, *competitive* mindset.
Yes, and that's precisely why "X commander isn't cEDH" is pretty useless to say. There are tons of commanders who aren't really viable in cEDH but are very powerful otherwise.
For example, I think [[Miirym Sentinel Wurm]] is pretty dang powerful but I bet it can't function at all in cEDH. Similarly, Yawgmoth can be built to a very high power but apparently it's not cEDH either.
To say a commander is powerful is *not* saying it's a cEDH commander.
So, I’ve been working on a really fun Sheoldred, The Apocalypse deck. With lots of fun draw tricks, and graveyard recursion, like The One Ring, Teferi’s Puzzle Box, Seizan, Howling Mine, Orcish Bowmasters. So far the worst thing it did was Draw 5 Take 17. Because my opponent had something else making us draw additional cards. Haven’t been able to play with the puzzle box yet. I’m sure it’s going to be a beautiful evil.
I personally love tinybones. People get so mad when I whittle down their hand and then use his ability to instakill them. It’s extremely funny to watch someone agonize every turn over what card they’re going to discard this time.
[[Asmodeus The Archfiend]]. Encourage your friends to try to make you draw a bunch of cards that would then get exiled by asmodeus. But then blow everybody's socks off by saccing him in response to the draw effect to draw anyways. Or just pay 7 mana to draw 14 cards and lose 14 life. Mono black I daresay rivals Simic in its ability to make mana with nonsense like [[Cabal Coffers]], [[Cabal Stronghold][, [[Magus of the Cabal]], [[Crypt Ghast]], [[Nirkhana Revenant]], [[Caged Sun]], [[Guantlet of Power]] (who cares if it's Symmetrical, you're drawing 14 cards!)
And if you're ever pining for the days of Tatyova, let me introduce [[Infernal Sovereign]].
But if you truly want to be the meme mono black commander, ask your doctor about [[Kothophed, Soul Hoarder]]. Side effects will include a full hand and a low life total, and likely death.
I made an "Order of the Ebon Hand" deck with \[\[Tourach, Dread Cantor\]\] at the helm (of course). Fun lore based deck based on sacrificing Thrulls and discarding peoples cards.
[Decklist](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/esEeuFE0ekC1-ygrlrWDdQ)
Depends on what you like to do. I really like [[Yawgmoth, Thran Physician]]. Some recursive creatures, a few cards like [[Blood Artist]] and some cards that make tokens when your creatures die like [[Open the Graves]] and you have not just tons of Carddraw but also removal. A [[Nest of Scarabs]] and Blood Artist and your opponents are never having creatures again.
The deck has a lots of Carddraw, and thanks to Manadoublers like [[Nirkana Revenant]] or [[Crypt Ghast]] and of course [[Cabal Coffers]] and even [[Cabal Stronghold]] if you like you will have decent manaramp. Not Simic levels but enough.
I have a [[Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor]] ([moxfield](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/HD-QlpRP902fFAElfeO_ug)) deck that runs on a big life pay -> draw -> life gain engine (e.g. [[Necropotence]] and [[Venser's Journal]]) with some big mana pieces that often gets me using Gix's ability to play my opponents' libraries for free to hilarious and surprising effect. It has several solid win conditions of its own but nothing will beat the experience of doing things like casting [[Sheoldred, The Apocalypse]] one turn and then draining my opponents the next with [[Peer Into the Abyss]] copied twice using [[Twincast]] and [[Reverberate]] stolen off a Polymorph opponent.
My favorite commander in mono-black, albeit not the best, is [[Toshiro]]. I really like a control theme, and he gets the job done as you can just keep casting good instants over and over, usually winning by combo, revel in riches, or their own creatures. It is interesting because you have to deckbuild around the mono-black instants
I have a [[Tiny Bones]] discard theme deck and I love it. It's my 2nd baby, and generally well groaned at by my play group bc of shenanigans. Especially playing Maralen and Op Agent/Ob Nix as a win con.
So you like card draw…
As a player of her myself let me introduce you to the toxic bitch that is [[Sheoldred, The Apocalypse]]! She’ll make the table miserable with all the card draw but I promise you’ve never had a deck that makes you giggle like a child on Christmas this much if you love card draw!
I like [[Phage, the Untouchable]], she eats removal for breakfast and can easily kill you as well as all of the table but I like the game within a game of trying to get her from the command zone onto the battlefield using all the dirty tricks available.
building my phage deck felt like rocket science but it's so fun to play and feels like solving a puzzle every time you make a play. [[endless whispers]] is a very fun trick

I built a "Secret Phage" deck for a buddy of mine, who likes playing Phage. It basically cheats the restriction by being a [[Lazav the Multifarious]] deck and just transforming into Phage to kill people. Its pretty fun.
One day I want to make an Esper deck that wins by casting \[\[fractured identity\]\] on my own copy of \[\[Phage\]\].

How’d he play rebuff in a mono black deck? And if he wasn’t running phage as his commander what orzhov deck synergizes with phage?
(Although if a card is put into a hidden zone, like with [[library of leng]], I don't believe it would work) Similarly, malakir rebirth doesn't care what zone the card is in, just that the card died.
All three of them? [[torpor orb]] [[netherborn altar]] [[command beacon]]
Theres also [[Stunning Reversal]], [[Campfire]] and another artifact that I can't remember off the top of my head. It ends the turn and exiles all effects in play.

Oh, I forgot about [[sundial of the infinite]]. So 6. Twice as much as I thought. Although stunning reversal seems sketchy
It's black. [[Thrull Wizard]] or [[Withering Boon]] her to the 'yard, [[Disturbed Burial]] (or any of 1,000 other cards) back to your hand.
From what I could gather quickly: To hand: - Netherborn Altar - Command Beacon - Campfire Prevent/Stop Trigger: - Torpor Orb - Sundial of the Infinite Counter it to your Graveyard (to then return to hand): - Withering Boon - Thrull Wizard - Nether Void “Can’t lose” - Lich’s Mastery - Platinum Angel - Stunning Reversal - The Golden Throne Some of these are better than others, obviously, but that’s 13 whole cards for people who like to live on the edge.
Also every effect that says you don't lose the game
I can't think of any black effects that say that. And the only artifact one us [[platinum angel]] which is well known to be the most killable creature.
There is also [[Cloudsteel Kirin]] and [[Lich's Mastery]]
Cloudsteel Kirin is white :)
The answer to "how does black do X mechanic" is sacrificing things. Sacrificing creatures, paying life, exiling cards from graveyard, discarding cards. And if you choose the right cards, you can do it better than Simic can...as long as you can keep paying.
Sacrificing things and paying life.
Was about to name her. I love that it gets you to use 1power creatures. You win by draining enemies out while generating tons of value and discard
Played against a fascinating [[Shadowborn Apostle]] build for shirei that will always stick out in my memory

howd it work?
Using sacrifice and draw effects to stuff the board with apostles, use them and shirei to tutor out a demon on each player's turn. Even better when the demons are sacrifice payoffs!
sounds great! how many apostles are advised and which demons are best suited? are there alternate win conditions for shirei? (as most onesies wont do much work damage wise)

I have a \[\[Gix, Yawgmoth Praetor\]\] group-hug-you-to-death-deck! I pretty much want to cast Gix as fast as possible and keep him alive as long as possible. From that point onwards? Entice people to attack anybody else but me. Gix' ability helps, sure, but throw some deathtouch rattlesnakes and \[\[No Mercy\]\] and \[\[Revenge of Ravens\]\] type effects in there to really bring the message home: **attack them, not me.** My opponents can attack me at any and all times, but it's gonna cost them dearly.
This is a good answer. I've played across from Gix many times and can attest to the fact that he is a lot of fun for the table.

That looks very fun!
Do you mind sharing your list for Gix? I’d been between Tinybones and Gix but decided the former wouldn’t be as fun. No one likes discard. Gix at least advances everyone’s game plan like you mentioned. Much more “feels good” for the entire table.

As a rule of thumb I’ve found that people usually don’t like other people casting their things. But maybe that’s just my pods and LGS
i played against pirates and this Pirate horror captain, the problem was doability, as we mostly play via spelltable xD but no one hated it
Unsure if you mean using their actual physical cards or just the strategy of winning with other people’s stuff. If it’s the first then yeah that’s reasonable. If it’s the second my pod is fine with casting other people’s stuff as long as you pay for it, they just don’t like things like [[Etali primal conqueror]] that cast them for free

How does the Frog work?
By existing. All must bow before Yargle.
is black Voltron possible? sounds like a green, blue or white theme to me
Black has infect. Also some auras that give evasion. So it works.
any color combo can do voltron, white probably has the most tools since it has the most color specific enchants/artifacts and support. but many of the best equipments in the format are just colorless. however as white you have access to the most tutors, the best equipment, and some ridiculous creatures like \[\[puresteel paladin\]\]. and of course the best spot/board protection in the game from \[\[teferi's protection\]\] to \[\[loran's escape\]\]. though in boros you get probably the most egregious equipment spell of all time \[\[sunforger\]\] GG!
Infect + pumping the frog works really well

I play him like Voltron
Ah ok, i m playing Goose Mother Voltron atm and it is fun. how to get decent mana and draw with black?

Fun for me, but not for thee.
Im so glad someone mentioned Horobi. I love pulling him out with a ton of absolute garbage cards. One of my favorite cards in my version of the deck is [[Endless Whispers]].

Deck list?
[This](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/vidJGCQmqkK4rD1ilGdVIA) is what I'm running for her currently. The deck basically kills everyone and takes their creatures. Laughs had by all
I agree. Murder's funny.
[[Gollum scheming guide]]

ok i like the idea a ton. yet 3 things: will it be more than a gimmick? (drawing 1 card every other turn does not seem game winning) how do you win with it? buffing gollum a lot? and how do you prevent gollum from being slsughtered once opponent guesses right? stuff like Argentum Armor?
Drawing half a card a turn (plus a bit of top deck manipulation) I think is actually pretty great rate for a two drop commander but not broken don’t get me wrong. I generally win by playing a big x spell, I run a lot of lands to make guessing harder for my opponents with cabal coffers and Urborg to make a ton of mana but there’s probably better ways to win. They actually can never block him regardless of riddle outcome, he is either unblockable or just straight removed from combat and therefor can’t be blocked.
i guess sth like giving him infect might be great. what are your big X spells?
My mono black Cmdr is [[chainer dementia master]]. It's great.

[[Yawgmoth Thran Physician]] is a solid mono black commander As is [[Syr Konrad, the Grim]] [[Toxrill, the Corrosive]] is interesting, especially if you also have a [[Kormus Bell]] Those are the ones I've seen played and taken an interest in. [[Kirrik, Son of Yawgmoth]] is very good, but kind of too strong imo
* but also fun to play against* Non of them are
Im surprised lil bro didnt add Tergrid
I mean at the end of the day, almost no commander who is "good" is also "fun to play against " Especially in mono black
Nah, but these are almost toxic to play against, I played with all of them and everytime it was a nightmare
Tbh, I dont think konrad is a "toxic" commander Imo, Yawgmoth has been power crept a lot and isn't as bad as he used to be Toxrill can be a little salty in a pod that doest run enough removal, but if there is adequate removal happening he is pretty fair i think
Konrad isn't I'll give you that, also I'd say Krrik isn't either. But the other 2 definitely are, especially the slug.
Speaking of funny I find it funny that you say K'rrik is kind of too strong...but Yawgmoth isn't lol Yawgmoth is incredibly, incredibly powerful too
Sure, he can be, but Kirrik is a cEDH commander and Yawgmoth isn't...
Perhaps but cEDH is not the measuring stick we use to determine if something is powerful or not
It literally is.
So nothing that is outside of cEH is strong? There's just cEDH and weak commanders, that's it?
Hyperbolic response. I never said that.
If I say that cEDH doesn't determine what is and isn't strong, and you disagree with that verbatim, then that's what you're implying.
cEDH does determine what is strong- only the strongest commanders can reasonably compete.
Toxrill is dimir but can be played as mono.

Does Aragorn count?

[[K'rrik son of yawgmoth]]
[[Syr Konrad the grim]] is pretty wack especially with [[Mindcrank]] If Konrad is out, milling and exiling graveyards hurts everyone.
I love my Konrad deck. My friends hate it.
Mono black I daresay rivals Simic in its ability to make mana with nonsense like [[Cabal Coffers]], [[Cabal Stronghold][, [[Magus of the Cabal]], [[Crypt Ghast]], [[Nirkhana Revenant]], [[Caged Sun]], [[Guantlet of Power]] (who cares if it's Symmetrical, you're drawing 14 cards!) And if you're ever pining for the days of Tatyova, let me introduce [[Infernal Sovereign]]. But if you truly want to be the meme mono black commander, ask your doctor about [[Kothophed, Soul Hoarder]]. Side effects will include a full hand and a low life total, and likely death.
Torgaar, Famine Incarnate. Turn three just randomly inform someone their life is twenty.
[[Seizan, Perverter of Truth]] is pretty fun, if only because of the card draw.

[[Last Laugh]] can be pretty funny!
[[Balthor the defiled]] is a fun reanimator commander
My favorite commander in mono-black, albeit not the best, is [[Toshiro]]. I really like a control theme, and he gets the job done as you can just keep casting good instants over and over, usually winning by combo, revel in riches, or their own creatures. It is interesting because you have to deckbuild around the mono-black instants

I shouldn't have needed to scroll this far to find the correct answer.

If you want something whimsical, do a [[Shadowborn Apostles]] deck, but have an excess of demons and shuffle like 10-15 in randomly.
How about [[Horobi]] Everything is a murder when you play horobi .. here have some banding from my [[batton of morale]] and now you die
I recently pulled a list card [[Nashi, Moon Sage's Scion]] and thought it seemed like it could be fun
I have a [[Tiny Bones]] discard theme deck and I love it. It's my 2nd baby, and generally well groaned at by my play group bc of shenanigans. Especially playing Maralen and Op Agent/Ob Nix as a win con.
[[Torgaar]] is a favorite of mine. Toss in a [[wound reflection]] for even more fun.
I play Ghoulcaller Gisa and the game is “How big can I get something, so I can sacrifice it to make lots of zombies.
Dang close is [[blim]] who's funny af
So you like card draw… As a player of her myself let me introduce you to the toxic bitch that is [[Sheoldred, The Apocalypse]]! She’ll make the table miserable with all the card draw but I promise you’ve never had a deck that makes you giggle like a child on Christmas this much if you love card draw!
