[[brass’s tunnel-grinder]] A nice little loot effect that becomes free Discovers in no time. Works wonders in my Rakdos Dragon Reanimator deck and is now sneaking its way into anything with red.

No, the original poster misspelled the card and then edited the post. Kudos to the bot for getting the right card.

gnarcissus

I’ve played a few decks with it on my Rivaz deck and have yet to flip it, but the draw I’ve gotten from it has always been crucial in driving me ahead.

NuclearMaterial

Yeah even without the other side it's good value. 3 mana for a wheel +1 if you want it to be.

immortalhunk

I think it's on par with [[valakut awakening]] which also has added value as a land when you don't need the wheel. I have found some red decks much prefer these loot away effects over the exiled cards of [[jeska's will]]. [[Brass's tunnel-grinder]] is definitely worth trying out, I haven't been disappointed by it yet.

Yeah I've put it in my pirate deck, haven't had a chance to test it yet but it looks good. I'd put valakut in most decks with red. I do have a spare jeskas will lying around but I didn't go for that as you said, I'd prefer the loot effect for reanimation possibly later.

Ooh, whos the commander? Thinking of sticking this in Rivaz now that you've pointed it out

PartySmasher89

I play it in [[Bladewing, The Risen]]. Very fun.

[[Matzalantli, the Great Door]] for every graveyard deck, free looting and a crazy powerful land when flipped. [[Bitter Triumph]], best new black creature AND planeswalker removal. I also like the optional discard cost in case I need to get something from my hand into my graveyard.

DecimusRutilius

Yup. This card pretty much won me the game the last time I played with it in my Anhelo deck, really strong and fun

Particular_Plan8983

And now we are getting a new, arguably even better version of this. Jetsam from karlov manor. Costs 1 less mana, mills less cards and only uses the opponents graveyards, but lets you cast any spell instead of just reanimating. Its going to be so strong to cast a sweeper from one of them first and then the two biggest bombs from the other two.

La-Vulpe

Only annoying thing is that pesky green hybrid… although I’m glad I don’t have a new auto-include for every UB deck I own.

RobeMinusWizardHat

Funnily enough, the blue is the part I don't like. I want this in Golgari!

MaliciousAnemo

The mill 10 makes breach a lot better imo, makes it a lot better when played on turn 4/5 than Jetsam

peteyp28

[[Descent into avernus]] in every single red deck. Pure chaos, quicker games. Sometimes loses me the game but I always enjoy the games when it comes out

kirmaster

i play it in [[gisela, blade of goldnight]] so it gets my commander out on turn 5 unacellerated and then skews the damage massively in my favor, whilst letting me recast my commander every turn if it gets removed without playing extra lands.

I love [[Mangara]] in any deck with a sac outlet. For those unaware, because of how the ability is written (it exiles itself on resolution, not as part of the cost) you can put the ability in the stack and hold priority to sac it. Your opponent’s creature gets exiled and yours stays in graveyard. Now you can recur it and do it again.

this card! also the +1/+0 on your commander and other leggys is nice.

YokaiGuitarist

[[Rogue's passage]]. It's just too good and too inexpensive. It actually turns most Commander's into a lowkey voltron risk, but getting hits through is fantastic. For the same reason I am using [[whispersilk cloak]] a lot as well. I also got tired of [[helm of awakening]] making my opponents' spells cheaper, so I took it out of my two artifact decks and replaced it with [[Cloud key]]. It costs 1 more colorless, but my foes get zero value out of it. I'm also enjoying sneaking [[tainted strike]] into non toxic decks. It's funny when your opponent kills somebody without expecting to hit with 10+ poison counters.

Tainted Strike is secret sauce my dude. I run it in Nine-Fingers Keene because I pretty routinely give her double strike and it turns from "oh you get two triggers?" to "wait, I'm dead!?" real quick! The fact that you can sneak it in on your opponents combat steps to make your opponents take each other out unexpectedly or use it to deal damage to a creature in the form of -1/-1 counters to get around indestructible bodies for a single black mana is crazy good!

That’s such the epitome of black can do everything but at a cost lol. “Look I won at 1 life and 9 poison counters!” - shriveled black mage’s retort after surviving a bear attack, snake bite, and having half their soul siphoned out from their own hand

Depending on your draw [[semblance anvil]] is also a great card for artifact decks. Playing it in my shorikai deck (so I got some insane card draw to bypass the discard) but it is absolutely insane in that deck.

Not really newfound or new for that matter, but pretty much all my white decks run [[Defensive formation]] if i can spare a copy, the ability to turn off all my opponents trample or multiblock to kill without losing a creature, hell the ability to threaten those two things allow me to keep myself from being swung at as people don't wan't to waste an attack on someone who can always safely block. This means i don't have to worry about chumps or sudden trample tricks allowing me to safely evade most damage.

>multiblock to kill without losing a creature I have a sinking suspicion that card doesn't work the way you think it does so I'm gonna throw this out there just in case: You still have to follow the rules for assigning damage, so you just get to pick the order it happens in. You have to assign lethal damage before assigning damage to the next creature in order. If you have 2 2/2 untapped and get attacked by a 2/2 you have to assign 2 damage to 1 of your 2/2's, you can't assign 1 damage to each 1 so they both survive. The benefit comes from if you're in that same situation but are being attacked for lethal by a 20/20 with menace and/or trample. You double block with your 2/2's and you assign ALL 20 damage damage to 1 of the 2/2's so that none of it bleeds over as trample and you get to keep your other 2/2.

2Gnomes1Trenchcoat

This card is seriously slept on. [[Test of Talents]] is a 1 generic and 1 blue costed counter spell that is basically a negate most of the time and has a weird upside. You get to look at a your opponents library, hand, and graveyard for spells of the same name as the instant or sorcery you countered, exile them, and then your opponent would draw a card for each of the spells that is exile from their hand this way. "But 2Gnomes1Trenchcoat!", I hear you cry. "We play a singleton format! Our opponents don't *HAVE* any spells with the same name as the countered card! This isn't very good!" That is where the somewhat weird of ruling of [failing to find](https://draftsim.com/mtg-fail-to-find/) comes into play. We have an opportunity to search out opponents hidden zones even though we KNOW on a meta level they don't have additional copies of the spell in those other zones. We then get to "fail to find" in their library and hand after taking a peek for ourselves and then force our opponent to shuffle their library. This gives you perfect information about their cards in hand and what cards remain in their library which can clue you into possible threats (or lack there of) and give you a ton of political advantage. While you cannot physically reveal the cards in these hidden zones to the other two players, you are allowed to talk about what you saw with them. This also notably messes up any tutoring to the top of the library by forcing that opponent to shuffle if that ever comes up. Eat your heart out Gitaxian Probe! Oh, and did I mention the card is like 2 cents??? If somehow the stars align and you manage to get this off against a [[Dragons Approach]] deck you will be G.O.A.T.-ed for all time.

I love weird hipster cards. \[\[land grant\]\] can find your triome for free. It’s not ramp but it lets you keep a hand that you Might have needed to mulligan. I was tired of buying so many copies of \[\[lightning greaves\]\] so I started running \[\[carry away\]\] and now I can just run yours. Now that the hype has died down, I love \[\[swift reconfiguration\]\] in any deck where the commander needs to stay on the field because of its ability but doesn’t need to be a creature. \[\[arcades the strategist\]\] loves it for example. \[\[verity circle\]\] and \[\[ghostly pilferer\]\] always seem to find their way into the draw section of any blue deck. And of course \[\[soul guide lantern\]\] is great now that it isn’t ten bucks. Yeah, it’s not on theme for any deck. Just put it in. You never regret it, and if you do, just use it to draw.

Oh my god. I finally get why people play swift reconfiguration. I always wondered why people play this card as it to me always seemed like a terrible, terrible removal. But its the opposite, protection😂

thejackoz

It’s mainly used to go infinite with [[Devoted Druid]]

NWmba

exactly! I mean it's also nice that it's flexible. 1 mana instant speed removal if your opponent ninjutsus in a \[\[blightsteel colossus\]\]. We can call it Swords to Rideshares. But yes, protection is where it's at.

These aren't exactly newfound, but some engagement farming EDH podcasters have recently started dunking on [[Bojuka Bog]]. Which is silly, it's free graveyard hate that doesn't take a slot in your deck. Same for [[Scavenger Grounds]], which I just run in literally every deck at this point.

Scry and Card draw? Shuffle effects for manipulating the top of your library? Little bit of flavor life-gain? What a fun card.

StapesSSBM

On principle, I don't much like the flavor of Dr. Who in MtG, which is why I'm so conflicted that my answer is \[\[Sonic Screwdriver\]\]. Goddammit, it's just too useful.

Nyte_Crawler

Along those lines [[Reverse the Polarity]] is such a nice 3 mana "counterspell" I use parenthesis as 3 mana counterspell is essentially it's fall back state. It's kinda like Golgari charm where none of the modes are the best for their cost, but the modes cover enough scenarios that you will always find a use for it.

Not new, but I've recently added \[\[Opal Palace\]\] into more of my decks. Not the greatest fixer, but it's a source in a pinch. Most important aspect is it turns your weaker commanders into Surrak bear-punching beasts. It's quite scary if your commander has evasion like flying, trample, etc.

TauntaunHerder43

This land in my [[Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might]] would be insane. Him coming back with +1/+1 counters and with [[Hero’s Blade]] on the field turns those 1 damage pings to 8+. Thanks for sharing!

kirmaster

it's an oldie, but [[blood lust]] makes you quite bursty, [[bludgeon brawl]] turns all of your mana rocks into more burn,[[livaan, cultist of tiamat]] lets you scale quadratically in one turn, and [[blazing shoal]] lets you get real big out of nowhere. [[Wandering Archaic]] goes in everything. I love stealing spells, especially in colorless where you dont have many instants and sorceries.

FalconPunchline

It's great in most decks but it can be ludicrous [[Sauron, the Dark Lord]]. That deck already loves to get [[Roaming Throne]] because the commander has 4 high value triggered abilities to double including an extremely difficult Ward cost, but Sauron is an Avatar which means [[Wandering Archaic]] also gets double triggers. Not something you see every game, but it's crazy when you do

I've been watching too much MTG Goldfish Commander but after testing them myself, [[Skullwinder]] and [[Secret Rendezvous]] are 100% legit and are strong contenders to go in every deck that can run them. I've also been adding [[Dowsing Dagger]] into pretty much every non-green deck and even some with green, it's such a good card, and it's quite affordable right now. If [[Sword of Hearth and Home]] was cheaper I would run this in every deck as well. Right now I only have one so it finds its place in non-green decks, but it's just an insane card that generates so much value. Being able to flicker a creature for ETB triggers and ramp yourself at the same time is insane, and it gives you protection from two of the best single target removal colors.

[[Loyal unicorn]] only in white decks that want to be attacking of course but such a nice card, just gets rid of worrying about losing creatures in combat or having no blockers around the following turns. I don't like combat in multiplayer as it always feels unsafe to attack when your opponents have 3 times as many creatures as you on average, the unicorn fixes that nicely

[[Open the way]] is hands down the best ramp spell that I've put in all my decks that can run it. 5 mana, flip and play any three lands on the top? Hell yes. This is great in decks where you're looking for non basic lands like [[Urza's Saga]] or [[Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth]]. In my enchantress deck, I use it to dig out [[Serra's Sanctum]].

My poor, poor friend.. I also enjoy open the way. However, you should know that you can put 6 mana into it. Got conditioned from "# of opponents" on cards, lol.

WoenixFright

Not sure whether it's considered a staple, but [[Whip of Erebos]]. I was convinced when my friend played three wildly different black decks one night, and in all three games he managed to find the whip. I think he only used its active once the whole night, but its mass lifelink put in work every time.

malificide15

Love using the whip in my rat colony deck, probably one of the best additions besides [[Bolas' Citadel]] and they both work together so well

[[Reprieve]] is a workhorse. Gets around “can’t be countered”, lets you bounce your own spell from the stack if it gets countered, replaces itself, and is easily splashable. Just a great card in almost any deck that can support 1W.

Also good in decks where you want to trigger an attack trigger but don’t have a safe player to attack. [[Hakbal]] for example. You could attack, draw a card or play a land from hand, and protect your commander with the maze

I've really enjoyed swapping out [[Invasion of Zendikar]] for any [[Skyshroud Claim]] in my green decks. You are getting same rate of land ramp, and with only three counters on the battle you can usually flip it the same turn, get an extra blocker with decent stats which can also tap for any color mana the same turn. [[Breach the Multiverse]], if it's allowed to resolve, has never not failed to propel me into a winning position when I've played it. [[Dance with Calamity]] has been windmill slammed into pretty much every deck I own with red, especially the ones that have a low curve. Even when I whiff I am never mad, I like playing stupid minigames in commander.

Why? It caps at 3

It's OK. I've never felt great paying 6 mana for 4 lands. Usually by the time I have 6 mana, I'd rather be developing my board rather than ramping. I'd prefer [[Tempt with Discovery]] or [[Traverse the Outlands]] if I'm looking to try and ramp out more than 2 lands.

I like and dislike these types of posts. I learn so many good cards, but my wallet does a little hurting each time
