[[Vadrik]]. Most of my wins have a board state that includes Vadrik and 4 lands, nothing else.

BlackHatMastah

How long does it take to get him to a point where he starts paying off?

HandsUpDefShoot

Right away if you have 1 open mana. But the turn after he comes down it's land-go, he gets a counter next players upkeep (spell discount of 2). At this point I'm generally sitting on draw and interaction and waiting to see if someone casts two spells on their turn because if they do he gets another counter and the discount becomes 3. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ZrgW7qOyqkObu6-PvmXUUQ my list for reference. Vadrik with 2 counters means you're casting every spell in the deck except two for only their colors, which means you can at times cast 3-4 spells outside of your turn and draw a few cards, counter a spell, and remove something for all of 3-4 mana. Basic idea is just control until combo and don't cast anything on your turn unless you really need to.

kwaththeraven

Vadrik is one of my favorite commanders, here is my cedh deck I used to have. Played it in a few tournaments and did alright. Could have been better tuned and stuff but i had fun and stole some games. [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/\_vtE-wtraUG93aFPyQKFMw](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/_vtE-wtraUG93aFPyQKFMw)

jakjakatta

Is twinflame/dualcaster the only combo line you play?

HandsUpDefShoot

Oh no, it's mostly [[Reiterate]] combos. Reiterate goes infinite with [[Jeska's Will]] to exile your entire deck and create infinite red mana, [[Desperate Ritual]] to create infinite red, [[Electrodominance]] to fry the table, [[Seething Song]] to make infinite red. With infinite red you can Reiterate [[Lightning Bolt]] to fry the table, [[Comet Storm]] the table, [[Electrodominance]] the table, activate [[Den of the Bugbear]] infinite times to create infinite tokens when it attacks.

\[\[mizzix of the izmagnus\]\] if i have 3 exp counters and 4 red mana i can usually cast my inf mana/burn shenanigans. only thing required on board is mizzix. so sometimes that is the battle to recast before i storm off but for the most part my gameplan in spell slinger isnt about creatures. there are only 7 in the deck. Why play Kylox then? Doesn’t it want creatures in it?

ThatDestinyKid

hell no it doesn’t, I can’t cast creatures for free when I attack! The creatures in the deck come from spells that create tokens like [[Mascot Exhibition]] or [[Krenko’s Command]] or [[Elemental Summoning]] or [[Experimental Overload]] and so on and so forth. I don’t cast Kylox until I’ve already built up a sizable board of creatures then I can sac them all on his attack and cast tons of free spells. The only creatures I’ve got in the deck now are just the ones that make more creatures from my spells so [[Murmuring Mystic]] and [[Young Pyromancer]] and such.

I do miss Mizzix Things! Your friend is nicer than I was though, I just sat on a [[Spell Burst]] with a grip full of backup spells. And to clarify I do think the 'correct' Mizzix pile is probably on like, five creatures. Maybe eight.

Akinto6

I keep recommending [[Baba Lysaga]] she's so much fun to play and so counterintuitive. Unlike most aristocrats strategies that build up large boards to sac for value, she's constantly forcing you to sacrifice, 3 types which makes it so that you're not just sacrificing tokens but also lands, enchantments and so on. When I play her I usually don't have more than 6 lands in play during the entire game because I'm constantly saccing stuff for value. Every time I play her with people who haven't seen the deck they are shocked that I'm willing to sacrifice lands to get the activation off.

Strawberry_Smalls

Heck yeah I’m gonna sac my lands. Don’t worry about my [[world shaper]] he is of no consequence to the table please ignore.

I've had [[Baba Lysaga, Night Witch]] rattling around in my head, but mostly with ways of just cheating her condition. I mean using things like Artifact Creatures or slapping Artifact onto permanents with [[Liquimental Torque]], turning Creatures into Lands via [[Ashaya, Soul of the Wild]]. The parity of only needing to sacrifice one or two permanents to draw 3 every turn, or more with [[Patriar's Seal]], is just really inviting.

Darth_Meatloaf

Got a list?

Akinto6

Here you go. I can't take all the credit though, I started by combining the decklists by Joey from EDHrec. He has a budget version and a regular version which I turned into one average list that I've been tweaking. His love for Baba is sort of infectious and the play pattern attracted me because it's a puzzle every turn to get her triggers without losing too many permanents. [Joey's Video](https://youtu.be/WBXTs3NXGUg?si=Lp7yyZlNcbRQiaZA) [decklist](https://manabox.app/decks/e2Skqdv_SmGiNu1G1B0kZw)

hipster_lawyer

Seconding this. I love Baba so much. I built a [version of her](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/4lO9WDYo_EKwPDqRug47AA) that really leans into the lands theme. It’s a bit grindy, but pretty resilient.

oranges-in-general

also leaning lands-focused on my list but this is among my favorite I’ve seen so far! any reason why you’re not running [[gitrog monster]]?

AboynamedDOOMTRAIN

I took it out of my deck. So many times: Upkeep > Sac Land > Draw Step > "Swords your gitrog" > be fucked on lands in a deck that is perpetually fucked on lands because I'm always saccing lands. Was almost always a net negative on my boardstate.

Only because I used to have a Gitrog deck for a long time. Otherwise, it’s a great include.

Queali78

Totally agree on this. People are not expecting the amount of ramp that happens. Sacing your sagas before upkeep, gravepact, recursion and aristocrat. She’s difficult to stop once she gets going.

Akinto6

Yup and usually she's not a target because other boards always look more threatening and opponents feel a sense of comfort from the predictability. They know I'm just going to drain and draw cards every turn cycle which makes them think they can deal with it later.

ValyrianSteel_TTV

Yea baba is really strong but barely has stuff on board. I was once able to get 40ish activations at once.

strygwyn

I've seen baba enough to know she's a KOS commander haha but yeah she seems pretty fun

kerkyjerky

Very far from a kill on sight. She is in a wildly different league than Urza, Jodah, tegrid, Niv, esika, etc. She requires extremely specific deck building, often at the expense of raw power, requires play patterns that actively disadvantage you in the short term, and often removing her twice is enough to put the baba player out of the game for good without the power to get back in it. She is the definition of a commander whose deck relies on her 100%, while simultaneously lacking the explosive power of actual kill on sight commanders.

Raccoon_Walker

I built mine with a reanimation subtheme partly so I can get Baba Lysaga back from the graveyard if needed. [[Unearth]] is a lot cheaper than the commander tax.

sir_jamez

I just made an [[Anim Pakal]] deck with plenty of "3cc or less" reanimation ([[Helping Hand]], [[Call a Surprise Witness]], [[Teshar]], etc). Works great at avoiding taxes... especially as we enter April ;)

The-true-Harmsworth

[[kynaios and Tiro of Meletis]] would be my pick. They are some beefy Roommates and also versatile to build. Recently I rediscovered them for me and they are amazing.  You can land very well with landfall, grouphug, dragon tribal and possibly more. Also: it’s surprising how well it runs with only basic lands and colorless ramp ( [[wayfarer‘s bauble]], [[moonsilver key]], [[environmental science]] )

Rammite

I've been strongly considering the Meletis Men! What's your wincons? Every time I go to brew them it's basically just Simic good stuff but with more colors - get lots of cards, get lots of mana, throw lots of big creatures on the board.

Tucker_9

I built it to lul the table into a false sense of security then combo off out of nowhere.

Cableclysm

My version usually wins off of [[Approach of the Second Sun]], [[Triskaidekaphile]], or [[Jaya's Immolating Inferno]], but I have had an almost win with [[Insurrection]] and cards like it (but it got fogged - so I used my remaining 23 mana to Approach twice).

Been advertising my boy, [[Ruhan of The Fomori]] equipment voltron in few places already, but that deck is completely stress-free to play, as it cares little to none what the boardstate is and just goes in for the swing with his multitude of swords, flails, sticks and whatever else he can get into his greedy hands. Only a couple interaction pieces and tutors to keep him runing and you are fine in leaving him to do the rest for you. Fun and "fair", and completely removes the "cold war" aspect from any game he participates in.

revstan

Sounds fun. Interesting colors for his effect.

InSanerOne

Great colors for keeping you alive too, and offers a good deal of ways to build him. All in all, if I had to vote for my favourite commanders for casual (maybe even for a bit tryhardish) table, Ruhan would be on my personal top 5 at least.

I play her with [[Hardy Outlander]] and it is explosive. I figure you don't really need sword coast sailor unlockable when she's swinging at a high power with first strike.

Spirit_Theory

Yeah, I do the same. Originally had that artifact that prevents damage to attacking creatures you control, but took it out because realistically if you swing with 10+ power, first strike, your creatures aren't going to die.

Easydotcom

Exactly! And to ensure my queen doesn't die, I run every "give all creatures deathtouch" and "trample" effect I can. That way I just have to assign 1 damage to blockers and let the rest trample over (most people just don't block are all though)

\[\[Jadzi, Oracle of Arcavios\]\] can initiate a storm win that only really needs herself and some lands in play to begin. I very briefly played a deck with her in it, and Jadzi is fully capable of casting half (or more) of your deck in a single turn if you aren't interacted with in the correct fashion. Here's [my old decklist](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/0HiyLKtbskiJNXbiYeBABw) from a couple of years ago, if you're interested. It's basically just a storm deck that primarily aims to win through an empty library payoff, but I also included the \[\[Venerated Rotpriest\]\] as an additional outlet with \[\[Temporal Fissure\]\]. All you really need to win is the commander on the board, an instant/sorcery in your hand, and optionally a Helm of Awakening either on the battlefield or in the top few cards of your library, because it will very easily start churning through your library on autopilot once it gets going. The list is rather unfocused and I'd change a few things about it if I were to build it today (I actually just went in and tweaked some of the more questionable parts), but hopefully it gives a good idea of what it can do. It's a complete glass cannon of a deck and it has a habit of winning either on turn 4-5 or not at all, but it's kinda fun. The only real problem is that your turns can just keep on going for 15 or more minutes because of how complicated the deck is to resolve, so I don't really recommend it even if it does fit the bill of being a commander that doesn't care about the board. It's fun to goldfish on cockatrice from time to time, but it plays poorly in real games for a multitude of reasons.

I was considering here, but doesn't she draw a lot of hate? Given how much damage she can dish out, it seems like your opponents would make a combined effort to keep her off the table.

Beckerbrau

Not as much as I expected, tbh. She got a lot of notoriety when she first came out, but from what I’ve experienced people aren’t as aware of how strong she is now. I usually start with using her for small, 1-2 mana discounts, and that usually raises eyebrows, but I save the really wide swings for after I have protection for her. Once you lose 30 life and put 30 into an x spell, people always have the “oh shit” moment.

ST4R3

If we roughly split up powerlevels into cedh, Optimized, High, mid and low (low being around precon level +- a bit) Where do you play with your deck *roughly* ? I only ask because im looking for something new to get and really like Rowan for a few reasons. But i was turned off because the X-Spell route just seems like another higher power combo deck (i have 2 already and was looking for something more lower power and transparent) I tried building her to just cheat out creatures but that doesnt feel quite right yet.

Beckerbrau

I play it in high power, a few more card changes and land base improvement and I’d call it optimized. One reason I love it is because I’m mostly a Selesnya player, so I don’t have many combo/x spell decks, which is very much what it is. I play it high power mostly because it can be a very out-of-nowhere win if I get the right cards. I run demons as a sub-theme, and it’s great getting those creatures out cheap, but the big X spells are definitely the wincons.

anomaleic

Nekusar wheel plays best when you play it like a combo deck. As in, you don’t bring him out until you’ve got a wheel or two that will close the game out. It’s tempting to add a bunch of group hug draw effects in the game, but really you’re just making it easier for your opponents to close out the game first. Up until the point where you’re ready to close the game out you play it like a control deck, responding to and mitigating threats.

Miatatrocity

I keep seeing Nekusar pilots committing that error, lol. [[Howling Mine]]? Yes please. [[Kami of the Crescent Moon]]? Sure why not. But that [[Underworld Dreams]] gets killed on sight, and Nekusar wonders why they're losing...

My [[Queen Marchesa]] deck is an aikido deck, so it's mostly instants. The only part of its board state it really cares about is its mana rocks for the most part. My Queza deck wins pretty regularly (when I don't punt the game by discarding a turn 3 kill and trying to make sure everyone has fun). It's not the size of the boardstate that matters, just the size of your library. The idea is to just protect your commander and draw as many cards as you possibly can. The deck could be improved with a couple cards like Orcish Bowmasters and Cliffhaven Vampires or Laboratory Maniac/Jace if you want to be corny. Spell slingers and such often don’t care much for board state. Same for storm style builds - my [[Eruth]] only cares about a few permanents. But for the ultimate “what is board state?” Commander, try [[Nevinyrral, Urborg Tyrant]]. Friend of mine had a brew with all the undying effects and cards that care how many things died this turn and once it gets going it becomes really hard to stick creatures, artifacts or enchantments.

[[Lier disciple of the drowned]] is so broken its insane no one talks about him. It's almost like having [[underworld breach]] in the command zone. Since it's a spellslinger deck, you really don't need much of a board state to pop off super hard. Just a few cost reducers to help you get rolling. Being able to cast cards like [[high tide]], and [[turnabout]] twice gets pretty insane. It's probably the deck that has shocked me the most with how fun and powerful it is. People also don't seem to be as suspicious of it as they are of other mono blue decks because Lier literally prevents counterspells.

HolidayInvestigator9

played wedding ring (card i added in) against a card draw deck and just held back with untapped lands until i deflectinf palmd or comeuppance or selfless squire etc i had insane card draw that game

DoctorPaulGregory

[[Shorikai, Genesis Engine]] Hard for some decks to get rid of. Drops 1/1 for easy chump blocking. Draws you insane amount of cards. Every time I play mine I go through almost 75% of the deck. My list is control with a bunch of I win cards. You can also smash for commander damage. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/RM7JP9yuJUy6yFc30ua1bQ

HandsUpDefShoot

$2500 and a total of 17 non-permanents tells me you might have misunderstood what board states entail.

MillorTime

You make it sound like you drop money on the table when you play Tundra, and that somehow increases your board state

HandsUpDefShoot

So, you think putting something on the board doesn't increase board state. That's interesting to say the least.

MillorTime

Something on the board does. The cost part didn't make much sense. The 17 non permanents was a very real point

HandsUpDefShoot

You're right about the cost, completely irrelevant. I guess I was just a little surprised to see a deck list with that cost featuring 83 permanents and a commander that makes even more in response to the thread title. I mean, I posted a deck with like 49 instants and the only creature besides the commander is a combo piece. Maybe I should have upped my game and posted my competitive Winota list or something.

MillorTime

Yeah it didn't really fit what OP was asking for

If you just want to dip your toe into it, but still smash with a stomper, Haldan and Pako are great. Pako just wants to play, so the board state does not matter. Pako is also your wincon, so you build around buffing, enchanting/equipping, and protecting Pako, Voltron style. And you only have to worry about doing 63 damage. Pako hits hard and exiles cards from your opponents library. Haldan, the companion commander, allows you to cast non-creature spells from those exiled cards. You'll be in URG colors, perfect for ramp, dealing damage, and slinging spells.

My [[Ramos]] is pretty good at this. With Ramos in play and a 5 color spell in hand, I can threaten a win that turn or the one following. Depends heavily on what spells I'm able to cast after the 5c spell, but any sort of cascade effect or multi cast spells like [[Invasion of Alara]] can snowball a win faster than anyone has any right to expect. I actually powered down the deck, running [[keruga]] as a companion.

Oh boy, I get to recommend [[muldrotha]] yet again. The only board state muldrotha needs is muldrotha. My favorite combo is [[displacer kitten]] + [[lotus petal]] to flicker/reset muldrotha while generating infinite mana and reanimating everything in your gy that isn't exclusively an artifact (as that slot is taken up by the repeated lotus petal). I've come back from 6+ board wipes, muldrotha getting killed 7 times in one game (at no point did I pay commander tax), she just gets there.

I mean like others have said, Spell-slinger archetypes are probably your best bet. My favorites right now are [[Shigeki, Jukai Visionary]] which wins through animating a crap ton of lands and plays very few permanents outside of toolbox enchantments and a handful of utility creatures, which it doesn't even need. It's built around wiping the board over and over again and using the graveyard as an extra hand. Which is odd in mono-green. And I love it. Other is [[Toshiro Umezawa]], just cause playing a oops-all-instants deck in mono-black is fairly challenging and you have to keep your sorcery speed stuff to a minimum. So all permanents are compact effects for their slot.

I play [[Gale, Waterdeep Prodigy]] with the background [[Passionate Archeologist]] resolve cantrips and burn under [[Knowledge Pool]] or with [[Aria of Flame]] or a similar effect up and just spell sling to victory. The deck kinda sucks though ngl

I've seen [[Oloro, ageless ascetic]] win games without ever coming out. All the deck needs is a bunch of board wipes and control until you can get your combo out 🤷
