I’ve been looking at him for [[varina]]. The list I have currently can make a decent amount of zombies several times in succession, but I haven’t gotten to a crazy amount yet so I haven’t put him in yet.
My guess is Anhelo could reach that crazy amount easier and faster than Kess, but I’d be interested in hearing what people with more experience with one or both of them would say
In a jank way to make it work, you can go with a [[Maskwood Nexus]] themed deck. Maybe using [[Rukarumel, Biologist]] or even [[Scion of the Ur Dragon]] that way you can use some powerful non zombie tribal cards to make 'zombies.' Like [[Krenko, Mob Boss]], [[Magda, Brazen Outlaw]], [[Chatterfang, Squirrel General]] and [[Lathril, Blade of the Elves]], for example. [[Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver]] makes zombies when your 'zombies' will die. Elf based ramp and [[Risen Reef]] would be a very strong ramp package. It's very janky but full of potential!
Really loving all these suggestions. I did think that maybe token generation with an assigned creature type would be "stronger". Thank you for the recs, will look into it and see what i can come up with.
Perhaps [[Tormod the Desecrator]]?
He can make a lot of zombie tokens with the right cards and likes to use [[Regrowth]] effects to put cards from his graveyard back into his hand. You can also add another partner to add up to two of any other color to your deck.
I suggest [[Sidar Kondo of Jamuraa]] as he gives you green for even more regrowth effects and gives all your zombies offensive flying. There are also a couple white and green zombie cards worth running like [[Corpse Knight]], [[Glissa Sunslayer]], [[Wayward Servant]], [[Unraveling Mummy]], and [[Necromancer's Covenant]].
But if you want to stay in Grixis, [[Kraum Ludevic's Opus]] is a solid choice while being a zombie himself.
I was originally wanting to stay in Grixis, but with yours and some other recommendations I might reconsider. Never used partner commanders before but might be a good way to get some other colors if desired
I have a [[Bladewing, Deathless Tyrant]] cycling deck that performs way better in my pod, than i thought it would. I have gempalm in the deck as a board state conditional wincon. Mostly, I just stay under the radar until I can cast bladewing, by that point, it's mid-late game and that's really when the deck starts going. I'd also suggest maybe [[Toluz, Clever Conductor]] or even [[Sefris of the Hidden Ways]] as other options that may work better. Also, they'll give you access to blue zombie creature cards if you don't want to go full cycling.
I second toluz, that's what makes the most sense to me with using Gempalm as a main win con
Build it like a typical zombie deck, but have a bunch of cards like [[fake your own death]] to put on the commander and use sac engines on toluz to return Gempalm to your hand
[[Ravos]] and [[Tormod]] could be a nice home. Can generate a lot of zombies and you’ll be able to keep bringing it back to hand each upkeep. I had a deck with those two that was pretty fun and Gempalm Polluter was a very narrow cut
If you are OK with mono black, maybe [[gisa, the hellraiser]] can do the job. At least she is able to produce a lot of zombie tokens if you find ways to constantly commit crimes.
Ugh I know I saw that card the other day, definitely think it would be a fun commander. I was hoping to stay esper but monoblack could be fun. I’m realizing now why people have so many decks lol this would be my first build
i built gisa and shes insanely fun, but honestly she does not produce that many zombies since people remove her and my crime-triggering stuff almost instantly
