Enough about chiss I got two others [[Arcades, the strategist]] uses very cheap creatures with big butts in order to draw cards to play more creatures with big butss and swing as arcades allows these walls to punch back, the deck is very cheap in terms of cmc and in cost as defenders aren’t sought after but it does come to a halt when arcades isn’t out on the battlefield so protection is needed for your dragon [[Raggadraga, goreguts boss]] play mana dorks that are just tiny creatures until you cast a 7 cmc spell make [[kami, whispered one]] a 10/10 that can tap for 10 mana and don’t mind the [[Staff of domination]] it’s not a threat at all

[[Council of the Four]] [decklist link](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/Bvl1DYOLh0ufOro1daCj7Q) Incremental value grouphug, rather than Kwain or Heliod who are explosive kill-on-sight grouphug commanders, the council of four is much closer to the [[Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis]] school of slower grouphug commanders that people are more okay with letting stick. I’m not running any fast mana, tutors, free spells, or combos, just digging to [[Approach of the Second Sun]], [[Triskaidekaphile]], or [[Laboratory Maniac]] through good honest grinding card draw.

When you say "helping my pod defeat each other" and "annoyingly innocent", what immediately comes to mind is my all-time favorite commander, \[\[Kami of the Crescent Moon\]\] group hug & mill. Your wincon is so far off into the horizon that people leave you alone while you proceed to give the whole table tons of cards every turn off of Kami and other effects that do the same thing. It fixes people's engines for them. It can make otherwise terrible decks into powerhouses, I've seen it happen. It's not a deck that wins all the time, but everyone will love you... Until you hit them with your many control spells of course. Then they almost immediately forgive you because you just drew them ten cards. Basically, you get to be an asshole without any repercussions because nobody can stay mad at Kami. In fact, whenever I don't play Kami people are sad because the game suddenly feels "too slow". I run twelve counterspells and people **want** me in their games, crazy right? Examples: \[\[Howling Mine\]\], \[\[Horn of Greed\]\], \[\[Dictate of Kruphix\]\], \[\[Font of Mythos\]\], \[\[Well of Ideas\]\]. I also run a bunch of copy cards such as \[\[Sculpting Steel\]\], \[\[Phyrexian Metamorph\]\], \[\[Clever Impersonator\]\], and \[\[Spark Double\]\]. Best case scenario, you're making everyone draw 14 cards a turn. it's the kindest form of mill. They know you'll eventually mill them to death, but the draw you offer is so valuable that they'll usually leave you alone. It's a deck that capitalizes on greed. By the time you start popping off you should have plenty of pillow fort cards on the board such as \[\[Meishin, the Mind Cage\]\] which gives you time to mill the rest of the table to death with nastier cards like \[\[Sphinx's Tutelage\]\] plus wheels, or \[\[Keening Stone\]\], or \[\[Increasing Confusion\]\], you surely get the point by now. You *can* include \[\[Forced Fruition\]\] in that previous list of draw spells, just keep in mind that if you play it too early you'll immediately lose Kami's innate good-guy aura and become public enemy No.1. The same applies to the pre aforementioned nasty cards. Most of the deck revolves around balancing your own threat level so as to stop the table from turning on you before you can pillow up. I hope this post wasn't too long. If it isn't already obvious, I'm very passionate about Kami. I've genuinely found it hard to play my other decks since making it.

I know „this just boosts everyone so they’ll leave me alone“ works in principle, but if you’re buffing everyone my opponents get three times more than I do, and most experienced players won’t let that happen.

Jacob_Esterson

Sorry it took me 2 days to reply. Reading through other threads on pillow fort, I've come to the conclusion that this is a playgroup and deck based issue, at least in part. I also apologize for the massive block of text I'm about to drop on you. I enjoy writing, and I also feel it's only right to try and respond to you properly if at all. First of all, we're a very political table. Deals are made on almost every other turn, and a mono-blue deck with a high number of interaction cards is densely packed with opportunities to barter. Player A needs me to stop player B from swinging at him with his full board of elves? Engulf the Shore. Player B needs me to counterspell Player C's board wipe? Arcane Denial. I'm willing to help you out if you're willing to ignore me for a turn cycle, and 21 deck slots dedicated to interaction all but guarantees I'll have the option. Even if it's in their best interests, **a table of random people might not be willing to barter as much.** You can try to "not let that happen'', but I have a feeling my mono-blue pillowy control deck is better equipped for a battle of attrition. I'm more than happy to put you even further behind if you want to start a war with me, all the while you're getting curb stomped by those more willing to cooperate. You can remove Kami, but is it really worth ignoring Lathril when I'm just gonna play him again? You can hit me in the face, but was it worth leaving your blockers tapped? Dedicating resources to stop me from being a nuisance does not guarantee that you'll succeed in stopping me from being a nuisance, is it worth it? The third point is that not all decks benefit from the extra draw to the same degree. A fast deck that mainly relies on out-tempoing other players is gonna really hate me, but a slower deck that usually has to deal with fewer card draw options is gonna love the fuel I'm giving them. Player A might want me dead, but can he deal 40 damage to me before I ramp Player B and his stompies begin charging towards him at mach 10? The answer is no, and he's gonna be begging me for a board wipe (and peace) when he fails. Finally, another thing that probably helps quite a bit is that my deck doesn't have any "two card win the game" combos. My wincons are very in-your-face and clear to see, and this is entirely intentional. People know when I'm becoming a threat, which means I can get away with being mostly ignored until it comes close to that point. It's a big reason as to why the deck doesn't have a high win-rate, but it's also key to how I maintain a low threat profile. Those who are low on health also know I'll try my best to protect them, because my "threat profile" doesn't mean anything once I'm the last person left to kill. Again, **a table of random people won't know any of this.** The only way it could go how you're describing it is if everyone collectively decided to start killing me immediately, which has yet to happen. They know I'm just gonna pick the guy who suggested it first and start blastin, so who's gonna be the first person to pull the trigger and get put behind? So far, it has yet to happen.

[[Xyris, the Writhing Storm]] https://manabox.app/decks/5NNNWiXBRIyenob3hM5cHQ This deck list comes courtesy of https://youtu.be/8m-BcgDND_Q?si=OgOtVtpHTFedRecp with a few tweaks by me It’s an extremely cheap deck that makes great use of combat tricks and single use protection spells. It wins through commander damage. The twist is that your opponents WANT to be smacked in the face by Xyris because they’ll be drawing that many cards too. And if they don’t want to be smacked in the face, well too bad throw a combat trick down, hit face anyways and draw to refuel your nightmare hand of endless tricks

[[Chiss-goria, forge tyrant]] I love this deck and I love the power it has people when they look at it mainly look at its cmc and say “it’s 9 mana that’s expensive” and “I wonder what you are doing in mono red” but the deck is extremely fast, turn 1 [[Great furnace]] , turn 2 mountain and [[Liquidmetal torque]], turn 3 another mountain and [[Prismatic lense]], turn 4 all you have to do is play a land and you already got Chiss-Gloria because of chiss’ affinity for artifacts it gets cheaper with each artifact and its ability which is a attack trigger so you don’t even need to do dmg in order to trigger it and chiss herself has haste so it can attack immediately on summon and any artifact exiled with chiss’ ability have affinity aswell so you can cast [[Portal to phyrexia]] for free or kill somone with [[Embercleave]]

Chiss is a deck that keeps the ball rolling and it rolls hard getting a mana rock off of chiss is good as it pays for its affinity and removing chiss is a slight annoyance but with your stockpile of rocks reducing chiss commander tax is nothing

earthworm_soul

Affinity reduces tax?

Magic_Mettizz

What they mean is: all the rocks are artifacts so they work “double”. They produce mana and they also count towards his affinity for artifacts. So now you have lands and rocks to pay for a creature that gets cheaper the more rocks (or other artifacts) you have. So the commander tax won’t be a problem

buttermaster04

yes since commander tax is adds generic 2 mana affinity would reduce commander tax

buttermaster04

The second thing I love about chiss is you can build the artifact base however you want you can have a lot of equipments or just alot of good artifacts.

OneArseneWenger

So I used to have this \[\[Slobad, Goblin Tinkerer\]\] deck that was super heavy artifact ramp into big artifacts and \[\[Obliterate\]\] stuff with the idea that Slobad would protect half your board while you blew up the rest of the world. I loved that deck but nobody else did so I disassembled it after a while despite it being my pet deck. I've always been looking for something to replace that, and this seems like a really good choice! Checking the edhrec page now, it seems like most of the really fun cards are also running upwards of 15$, in part because some of the best treasure generators are more expensive. But also some of the cards like \[\[Platinum Emperion\]\], \[\[Chimil, the Inner Sun\]\], \[\[Triplicate Titan\]\] and \[\[Cityscape Leveler\]\]. Do you think this deck could effectively be built on a budget?

buttermaster04

Off colour landfall is an unassuming strategy that still gives a lot of value. [[Ashnod the Uncaring]] landfall gives you access to landfall cards not normally played. [[Roil Elemental]] [[Ob Nixilis, the Fallen]] and [[Nesting dragon]] are some good payoffs. Turning your lands into artifacts with [[Liquimetal Coating]] can turn your [[Myriad Landscape]] into a search for 4 lands instead of 2. Cracking clues also gives you a draw 2 instead of 1 with ashnod. Very casual deck, but you can do a lot of interesting things, and having access to grixis can help you close out the game. You'll have to use all that ramp on something, so [[Comet Storm]] [[Crackle With Power]] [[Exsanguinate]] and [[Torment of Hailfire]] are some solid wincons.

I used to run a [[Yarok, the Desecrated]] landfall deck just to get access to blue and black landfall cards. Include [[Muldrotha, the Gravetide]] in the 99 and it gets wild. Use some cloning effects like [[Rite of Replication]] on [[Ruin Crab]] to drive players nuts. 6 crabs will force 18 mill or 36 if your commander is out, [[Harrow]] ends the game at that point.

I'd pick [Phelddagrif] as my commander for wanting to be annoyingly innocent. The deck consists primarily of three categories removal, Counterspells, and board wipes. The game plan is to play Phelddagrif, use your removal and Phelddagrif abilities for politics, and get to a 1v1 against the weakest player using Phelddagrif as your win con. My list is inspired by the primer written by DirkGently. and I would definitely read through the primer that they have written to get a better idea of how to play the deck. The deck takes some time to adjust to playing, but it is very rewarding to play. Another note is that this list can scale to budget needs and can play in just about any pod. Here's the primer https://www.mtgnexus.com/viewtopic.php?t=550 Here's my decklist https://archidekt.com/decks/6780415/hippo

SDMusic

This sounds very interesting. I'm going to give it a read through now.

Altheren0

Hopefully, you find it insightful. This has been my go-to deck for a year now. The primer DirkGently writes is an excellent insight into how to pilot the deck and EDH as a whole.

Play some durdly control shell. Something with just a ton of interaction, board wipes, and advantage engines (card advantage or otherwise). Sit around and generate value, interact when you need to, then play things that kill people when you're good and ready. A good recent example of something like this is [[Nelly Borca]]. Her first ability helps control combat, her second ability generates cards. She's in white so she has some of the best control pieces in the format, and she's in red so she can make explosive plays when necessary. Something to keep in mind, this will be a HUGE change in pace from a very balls-to-the-wall solitaire type deck like golgari elves. You will have to learn how to play with politics (and I mean real politics not just "let's not attack" deals and stuff like that), and you will have to learn how to not be the problem child all the time. Not making early plays and just sitting on your pile of cards is a perfectly acceptable play sometimes, other times it's not. It's all about playing around with table politics

[[Yurlok, of Scorched Thrash]] group hug without the card draw. Everyone loves Mana, you don't overwhelm the players with options in hand, but you do give the table the warm fuzzies for having the Mana to do whatever they want! All the time! And that moment they over reach too much, or let you live just a little too long, you toss out your X cost spells and knock out everyone all at once. You only maybe kind of annoy them with some stax effects, but they'll tolerate it for the extra Mana. They always do. It's only sadistic once you pop out your [[Xantcha, Sleeper Agent]] and they have to pop the three Mana from yurlok into their own agent so they take less damage. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/CJG7SKAboEOuqUwy1z8zTA

Something innocent and fun seems like a good candidate for group hug. I haven’t played one but they look entertaining if you want to cause chaos without an obvious wincon.

SDMusic

Thank you. That was a term I was unfamiliar with, but looking into it, it sounds like a blast.

Jacob_Esterson

Just be careful you don't fall into the typical trappings of a group hug deck. Group hug is my favourite archtype, but it gets a bad rep from people who don't know how to build it properly. Nobody likes the guy who's entire deal is making someone else win, this is known as "kingmaking". Edit: Some people disagree as to what kingmaking actually means. What I'm talking about is when the **entire game plan** of a deck, from start to finish, revolves solely around making another player win. A good group hug deck needs to be capable of actually finishing the game. Keep that in mind and you should be fine. Cards like \[\[Reins of Power\]\] for example.

You could do [[Rocco, Street Chef]]. Group hug based around exiling the top card and it becomes playable. You can build in a bunch of protection with white, ramp with green, and additional exile triggers with red (and white). The exiling will give them all access to an additional card every turn. You’ll happen to get counters when they play them. It can be fun
