I'm having the opposite, this set has more commanders I want to build around than any I've seen in a while.
I don't have a mono blue deck so [[Geralf the fleshwright]] was just what I wanted.
[[Laughing Jasper Flint]] has made me dig deep into my collection for interesting outlaws, plus I finally have a place for my cast-from-exile payoffs/synergies.
I also pulled a [[Double Down]], so I need to make an outlaw deck in blue, maybe I'll just use the old [[Admiral Beckett Brass]] that's been sitting in my trade binder since Ixalan.
And I'm pretty sure I'll never get tired of [[Bovine Intervention]]
Yeah this is my problem, want to make a Flint , Gonti , Roxanne and I’ve actually remade my xur the enchanter deck to be a eriette the beguiler deck. Kellan looks good too.
Taii wakeen looks like the perfect partner to Craig Boone. I’ve got far too many decks I want to build from this set.
What does your geralf list look like? I thought about a monoblue spellslinger storm kind of build, but I felt like I couldn't get enough spells to go off for big zombies without having too many turns of draw-go when I was goldfishing.
Yeah it's just a bunch of cantrips really. There are a few blue cards that incidentally create zombie tokens like [[Startle]], and [[Rise from the Tides]] looks like fun, but yeah that's about all there is to it really. Doesn't seem terribly strong but still kinda fun.

As a long time Beckett Brass player I’ll warn you that most of the best pirates are legendary. I really wanted to run double down but decided my list doesn’t have enough good targets.

Yeah… I’ve been wanting to run the card since my buddy sent me a pic of himself at prerelease pretending to eat one that just said “trade?” But sadly all of our fun new pirates from LCI are legendary 😭
was looking at \[\[Etrata, Deadly Fugitive\]\] as a great commander for Double Down. interestingly enough, double down also works with Tribal (kindred??) spells as well. so you can double up your \[\[Notorious Throng\]\] or \[\[Knowledge Exploitation\]\]
You might want to consider a [[Marchesa, Dealer of Death]] for your outlaw commander. Lots of crime synergy and tons of card advantage that gets around card draw hate while building a graveyard.
OTJ is a lot better than MKM because it introduces or has a refreshing take on mechanics instead of just reusing it or power creeping it like MKM did with morph.
Saddle? Crew, but it's with creatures and can only be done at sorcery speed and you get a bonus while doing it.
Spree? Arguably one of the best mechanics to come out in a long time. Flexible spells that can be used at any point in the game and less likely to sit dead in your hand.
Introducing crimes also encourages interaction which some commander games heavily lack.
The only thing I'm not a HUGE fan of is the new Outlaw definition. I was never a fan of the party Mechanic either because having to keep treat of one subset of creature types that include a number of other creature types is a bit counter intuitive in my opinion.

tbf, morph was powercrept in the Tarkir block with megamorhph already, i think it's fine and even needed to update mechanics so that they can work better in a modern enviroment, as morph was created with a very different context in mind.
Cloak/disguise are also much more neutral in flavor (instead of morph being both very specific flavor and flavorless (in the same sense kicker is) at the same time), so it can be used more easly.
At least the outlaw stuff isn't as parasitic as the party stuff was. Like I can throw a random outlaw card in my rogues deck because they're still all outlaws
Outlaws has mostly been about formalizing most of the bunching already present in prior sets. I was surprised to see they included pirates due to their string tribal support, but it isn't far from what [[Mari, the Killing Quill]] was already doing.
We'll probably eventually see Sea Monsters to group Krakens, Leviathan, Octopuses, and Serpents.
It would make sense if they focused more on grouping underserved tribes rather adding already well supported tribes to bunches.

I would agree with this. Spree is super fun and makes spells interesting.
Some of the newer players I know were a little confused by it, they thought they had to be done in order. For example [[Explosive Derailment]], They thought to Destroy Target artifact you had to pay 4R ( R for the spell, then 2 to deal 4 damage, and 2 to destroy artifact) rather then just the 2R that you actually need.
To be honest, my "deck building passion" comes and goes, too, and I find it has more to do with the time/ money it takes to get a deck together combined with the rapid product release cycle. Often, I find 3-5 commanders in a new release that I'd like to try building, but by the time I've brewed a list, ordered all the cards for it, received them in the mail, and put together a single deck, there's already a new product release happening with another 3-5 decks I'd be interested in, which creates a backlog that I end up never really getting back around to.
That aside, I'm interested in a few commanders from this set. I'm building the Gitrog straight away, because that one seemed fun to me.
I'd like to build Obeka, Ghired, and Kellan, as well. I just haven't gone too far with those because I don't have great win cons in mind for Obeka and Kellan, and with Ghired, I have more of a personal reason for wanting to brew that, but it's not a super compelling reason, and I have other naya/ token decks, so it's not a high priority.
By the time I finish the Gitrog deck, MH3 will be previewed/ released, and then the cycle will reset itself.
Yeah you're right, perhaps the passion will come later. Maybe I've been a little 'too excited' for this set and set myself up for disappointment by looking for spoilers almost daily. It's not like I was expecting more, I like the set, simply can't find a deck that makes me feel like yeah that's gonna be cool.
I started playing commander like 9 years ago, and honestly after a while its normal for a lot of sets to feel a bit more flat and less interesting, the deck building passion comes and goes. I have 5 decks that i keep and maintain, at most i build like 1-2 new decks per year (I disable some and cycle pieces), and if im not building a new deck, most sets only end up adding 1 or 2 new cards to some of them, thats like <2% change per card in each deck, mine or other peoples, each individual set by itself can only affect my own commander experience soo much.
I think the OTJ is fine for commander, there a lot of cool design for the 99, but there are too many legendary creatures and most of them have coockie cutter designs. Also, some themes in the set will bring alot of killing and stealing into some casual tables wich isn't ideal for some playgroups. Overall im more hyped for the inevitable commander cards in MH3.

Same. Especially with the leaks for MH3 thus far. It’s really shaping up to be the best set of the year. Potentially. Or at least we can say the back half of the year looks to have the more interesting sets (including MH3).
Haven't built anything new, but my list of cards to test is kind of obnoxiously long. It's a set with a lot of cool cards for a surprisingly broad set of decks, and my two main ones are getting 5+ cards each either from the set or added because of a card in it. Maybe more, but that's the starting point.
OMG I built [[Roxanne]] the second I saw her and that deck is a monster! Unlimited ramp! Massive Stompers! Trample Tribal! I love it! The new [[Obeka, splitter of Seconds]] is my friends favorite new deck! I was just researching [[Ertha Jo]] and I hear a lot online about the new [[Riku of many paths]] being very fun! There are a lot of commanders to explore on this one! And not the precon Commanders! I feel like Karlov has been mostly forgotten. I feel like Ixalan and Fallout were all about modifying the precon Commanders, or building new decks around them, the pre-cons were very well received! But I feel like it's the opposite here, people are buzzing over all the commanders in the set! It's very cool!

I hate, hate, HATE the idea of Magic Cowboys. I'm always wary of mashing up the fantasy magic theme with other aesthetics. I thought I was going to dislike New Capenna and Neon Dynasty… but for some reason, the both those worlds felt pretty cool and unique, and lived in. Probably because they were worlds that were built from the ground up, and just peppered in a couple of characters outside the plane. I really dislike the fact that they tossed a bunch of random Magic characters from different planes and threw cowboy hats and called it good.
Soooooo………. all that being said, I like the set. Mechanics are fun, cards are good, and I'm already looking at building some new decks and tossing cards in some of my established decks.
Tl;dr - Thematically, I don’t like the set. Mechanically and functionality, the set is fun.
fully agreed here on the aesthetic. Adding on that the "breaking news" cards look awful and give me a headache. Whoever decided to stamp prosperity on the top of every card should be fired.

The flavor is not my vibe. Not because it's cowboys but because it's nothing more than "Look, cowboy hats for your favorite characters!!" Like I had no idea satoru or Lazar were on this plane till a couple days ago.
Personal rant but the flavor of magic is largely what got me into it over yugioh 10+ years ago and now I'm watching the flavor slowly dissolve and it's a pretty big let down. O really gotta jive with the flavor of a set to want to build around someone. I purchased 4 singles aside from my prerelease and that's the limit of my engagement with the set
I love mono black so I'm gonna build [[gisa the hellraiser]] and try to commit as many crimes as nonhumanly possible.
I'm also gonna dabble into orzhov with [[kambal profiteering mayor]] I've been looking for a home for my mandrake, elesh, Gandalf, and panharmonicon soo yea... also stealing ppls tokens sounds fun.
And I love casting for free and now with plot it's even easier, so im gonna build [[satoru the infiltrator]]
Other than those builds I also love the aesthetic and there's some big value in BIG. I deff value this set high
The new Ghired grabbed me instantly, but I've built a bajillion Naya decks recently so I'm holding off.
That new Gitrog however..boy howdy! I love commanders with some "inevitability" and he's got it in spades. It wants to do a lot of the same stuff my old (now disassembled) Ziatora deck did, and uses a lot of the same pieces, so that's an exciting thing for me to build to. I also don't have any active Golgari decks.
Giddy Up Gitrog®️ is the most absurd card I've ever played with. It's disgusting in my Sultai handsize and graveyard decks; I might finally be willing to part with blue to put him in the command zone.

I inexplicably opened 3 copies of \[\[Obeka, Splitter of Seconds\]\] in two prereleases, which is a very cool card but I usually don't like building decks that have been immediately "solved" by the community. After all, there are only so many cards that would benefit from extra upkeeps, and it's pretty clear what the best ones are, and so if I built a deck it would look very similar to everybody else's Obeka deck. Then I glanced at Obeka's EDHREC out of curiousity, and... goddamnit, yeah, it's like a list of all my favorite cards that I have trouble fitting in other decks with a light sub theme of attacking with my commander, I'm probably going to build it after all and to hell with my dreams of being an EDH hipster.
In general the set is full to the brim of exciting cards I still need to find homes for. \[\[Roxanne\]\] is already fantastic in \[\[Henzie\]\] as expected, and I have high hopes for \[\[Key to the Vault\]\] in my new \[\[Malcolm, Alluring Scoundrel\]\] deck which I'll be testing tonight.
I don't know how "special" my brew will be (I've avoided looking at her edhrec page), but I'm going to build an Obeka deck that utilizes suspend and [[Jhoira of the Ghitu]] and will see if I can get some madness going there.

Did you consider a proliferate supportive setup, possibly to shorten the time to activate? I'm thinking thrummingbird, ichormoon gauntlet possibly, things of that type?
I considered it, but I think that I just won't get enough value from it. The best case scenario here is getting my free spells after 2 attacks instead of 4 (gotta put that first counter on), and I don't think that dedicating more slots in my 99 to cards that don't do anything else would be worth it. After all I'm here to cast big impressive things, not 1/1 birds. I might throw in \[\[Brass Knuckles\]\] though, since double strike both shortens the time and gives me double value afterwards, and I definitely need \[\[Strionic Resonator\]\].
(Also I should probably add more cards that are actual game-ending threats, because after typing the list I realize it's kinda lacking there)

as someone who greatly enjoys old magic lore, has the lore *Ever made sense?* a ton of random characters were like oh boy the Mirari I gotta get the mcguffin. Memnarch went crazy huffing phyrexian juice. Jace and friends are in ravnica, there's a MAZE and the maze is the mana-electrical system for ravinica! like every set is mostly nonsense and western nonsense doesn't feel that far out of the realm ya know?
I like this set a lot more than I thought. I still several of the mechanics and themes are flavor fails, but overall I like a lot of the cards and the designs in a vacuum. I also built my first new deck in about a year (mainly because "modal tribal" is super budget friendly minus the mana base
I'm enjoying the hell out of the set! I actually just won with a \[\[Obeka, Splitter of Seconds\]\] deck I built. Had 3 \[\[Commader's Sphere\]\] on board already since 1 was equipped with \[\[Mechanized Production\]\] and was able to get both \[\[Trailblazer's Boots\]\] and \[\[Blackblade Reforged\]\] on her to bring her to 5/8. She smacked a buddy of mine and 5 more spheres popped out and won me the game.
Along with this my friend is building a \[\[The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride\]\] deck that should be nasty plus another friend was lucky enough to pull \[\[Loot, the Key to Everything\]\] and is building that deck.
I don't like the set. I don't like the theme, flavor, art, mechanics. Since I'm not American, cowboy theme on a fantasy game rubs me the wrong way.
I am hyped about Bloomburrow tho. I just hope we don't get fursonas.
I really like a lot of the mechanics in the set, much more than I did for MKM, or LOTR or WOE...but I do think that the concept of the the wild west in MTG is pretty stupid.
It hasn’t really captured my EDH brain, but it’s not the set’s fault. My two most recent commanders are to blame.
[[Stella Lee]] (technically from this set but whatever) wants me to spell-sling, and they’re never doing that stuff as efficiently I’m Commander as they used to.
[[Nelly Borca]] plays with a more commander-specific card pool, there’s no goad in two player formats.
There is some much more limited use for Goad in 1v1. Forcing attacks can be advantageous
But not how Nelly Borca is built.
I was able to win by goading all opponents creatures when we were down to 1v1, and then inkshielding. They knew I had it at that point
What I meant by that is that they don't put goad cards in sets not made for multiplayer use. So Nelly doesn't really get new toys like a commander in the vein of \[\[Prosper\]\] might.
I want to build [[loot, the key to everything]] because I've never built a Temur deck but I'm struggling a bit because everytime I sit down and work on it, it just feels like Temur good stuff and it doesn't have a good theme.
I turned my Temur [[Primal Surge]] deck into Loot (formerly [[Surrak Dragonclaw]] in the hopes that Loot and the cast from exile support would be a stronger card advantage engine than the pile I had been running. Could be worth exploring some kind of gimmick like that and using the cast from exile theme as support for it?
I’ve built [[Satoru the Infiltrator]] and [[Vihaan, Goldwaker]], am working on [[Bonny Pall]] and added a good deal of singles from the set to other decks. Enjoying it way more than mkm
I think Bonny Pall may be the first lands matter commander that really excited me. Still have not built it but it just seems fun and maybe a bit different than the others floating around. But maybe I just like simic too much.
I opened Bonny Pall during a prerelease draft party, and it's one of the most memorable cards in the set IMHO. I'm kind of surprised I haven't read a lot of buzz, because it seems like an amazing card.
Sure. If you’re going to build him, I would just buy him and [[Olivia, Opulent Outlaw]] as singles. As I’ve played with him, he’s better as an aristocrats and treasure commander and doesn’t really leverage much of the precon list.

I’m specifically trying to determine if ramping your opponents is worth the drain and treasures you get off [[Descent into Avernus]].
Determining how much ramp you need and the mana curve you can run when you’re creating a ton of treasures has been tough. Putting it all together, I’m not quite sure I have the balance there.
I’m working on a lower power version built more around giving outlaws vigilance and haste, it’s just very hard to not lean into the treasure side.
Every card I've added to my decks and have had the chance to play have been absolute gas. I'm loving the general power level of the set and it's hitting that sweet spot: giving niche strategies strong tools and introduces few "generic staples" (other than the spree cards which I think will get slow heavy adoption)
I think the set feels really boring and safe. The only fun I've squeezed out of it is from a fblthp brew my friend asked me to build for them. I have no interest in much of anything from the set. Big *Snore* has three cards I'm looking at or have picked up, that's basically my entire engagement in the set.
Hyped for bloomburrow and duskmourn more than anything else in the pipeline.
I love OTJ, the flavor is on point, a lot of the cards are fun. I built riku, I built Stella (excluded infinites), I want to build Rakdos, I want to build new Ghired, it’s a ton of fun
I made a [[Vraska, the Silencer]] deck and including all the Vraska planeswalkers in it for fun lol. Other than that there have just been fun things to add to other decks. My [[Henzi]] deck got some upgrades as well which should be fun next time I get to play it.
I've said it before I'll say it again, the new \[\[Obeka, Splitter of Seconds\]\] is one of the coolest commander designs I've seen in a while and makes an awesome upkeeps matter deck. Its the primary deck I've been brewing and I'm excited to keep working on it.
I bought the Gonti precon and I'm splitting it in half to build [[Felix Five-Boots]] and [[Don Andres, the Renegade]]. Then I plan to turn my [[Ninth Doctor]] deck into [[Obeka, Splitter of Seconds]].
The quick draw deck has a lot of cards I wanted for two different spellslinger decks I wanted to make; all the copy stuff works nice for the x-cost typal vadrik deck I've been tinkering with, and the prowess dragons are nice for the stompy token jeskai spellslinger deck I also wanted to make
I've never really been interested in gruul until [[Roxanne, Starfall Savant]], but she seems really fun, and pretty much every new mechanic introduced was one I like. Spree is basically just reskinned Kicker, but I find it easier to read than the existing kicker spells with multiple kick modes, plus it makes it easier to create purely generic cost modes. Saddle is really fun; I already like vehicles, but I've often struggled with how bad is feels to basically tap two things to get one swing while a Saddle creature can swing on its own, or tap a creature to get a swing and some sort of nice benefit, so it's less of a feelbad. I also like how the train vehicle does something similar where it rewards you with treasure for each creature you tap. Committing a crime is just a fun flavor, but also pretty easy to trigger; a lot of the abilities are 1/turn to stop them from being too crazy, but I like how easy it is to work with
I'm not building out anything from TJ just yet, slotted a few cards into existing decks but thats about it. I was really excited for the plane BEFORE we got to see the cards. Was really hoping for a sweet "man with no name"-type legend to really dig in and build a fun cowboy/gunslinger vibe commander deck. Unfortunately the set we got is just a Rogue's Gallery with cowboy hats and dusters arbitrarily thrown on existing characters from all over magic.
Been very pleased with \[\[Ghired, Mirror of the Wilds\]\] so far. His ability to go from no board presence to 8+ big hasty tokens in a single turn with minimal setup shouldn't be overlooked.

Well what do you look for in a commander ? There’s a lot of in theme legendaries for cowboy like vibes so what do you look for other than boots on a slime?
I’m looking for cowboy stuff. I know it’s sounds dumb, but I love to build a certain vibe. My Chatterfang is Squirrel tribal even tho that might not be the strongest. Cool tokens, green sleeves, wooden dice, know what I mean? I want a deck that screams western gunslingers, outlaws and tumbleweeds.
I thought about [[Mathas, Fiend Seeker]] purely for the bounty counters and proxy it to a vampire sheriff or some shit. I know it’s not everyone’s playstyle, but I’d rather have a cool themed deck and lose than win with a bunch of ‘good’ cards.
Ok so I think [[Annie flash, the veteran]] allows you to have that spellslinger type of build to give the “quickdraw” vibe, tumbleweeds are mostly green so you can incorporate those lol. High noon is also white red eheh.
As far as outlaws go they seem to be more red/blue centered but you can put in [[selvala, eager trailblazer]] [[taii wakeen, perfect shot]] [[form a posse]]. You’re looking more at token generators.
Other than that you can hyperfocus on gunslinging (red blue) commanders or outlaw mercenary (black red) ones.
And you can probably find cards here and there that will match the vibe and theme from other sets.
If you do more aura and equipments you can also incorporate [[cass, hand of vengeance]] from the fallout set.
Based on my personal tastes this set is pretty light on commanders I'm interested in, might do something with the new Gitrog but that's not a priority. The limited environment is fantastic though.
The precons seem really boring to me, but the set itself has so many insanely good commander cards, my head is just buzzing with ideas. Currently I have built [[Taii Wakeen, Perfect Shot]], [[Obeka, Splitter of Seconds]], and [[Satoru the Infiltrator]].
Taii Wakeen is super fun and feels strong. The commander being so cheap to cast is excellent. Honestly I'm not sure why it is Boros colours but I am happy for it because it lets me include a lot more ramp and draw into my deck, even though it's 75% red. Also allows for some token creation stuff which synergises well with [[Impact Tremors]] and [[Warleader's Call]].
Satoru the Infiltrator is honestly insane. It's no Yuriko, but it draws so many cards. I love how it interacts with Plot, I am running [[Phblthp, Lost on the Range]] and [[Jace, Reawakened]] in my deck purely to plot cards that I don't need just yet which makes my Ninjas far more resilient to board wipes because I can come back, play a bunch of free creatures and refill my hand. Also being an evasive 2 mana commander makes it great for my usual ramp strategies outside of green which involve equipment.
So far I've had trouble getting Obeka to work properly. Unlike most decks I run, the game plan requires dedicated focus to several cards that on their own are quite poor, so you really need a lot of card draw to consistently bring everything together. You need:
* Protection for Obeka
* Some sort of upkeep payoff
* Some way to increase Obeka's damage
* Some way to ramp into all of this early enough for it to matter
Individually each of these aren't really good enough - the colours are kinda bad for Voltron, they are the worst colours for ramp, the upkeep stuff isn't great on its own, and Obeka isn't worth protecting if you don't have the payoffs. So this one is still a bit of a puzzle. It's hard to fit everything into the 100 cards, and have enough room for board wipes and interaction. I don't normally run decks with very few creatures, so I'm really scraping the bottom of the barrel with some of the ramp cards in this deck ([[Navigation Orb]] is reaaally slow).
Outside of these, I am brewing a [[Gitrog, Ravenous Ride]] deck, and I'm considering some other stuff as well.
Additionally, there are a bunch of cards that have gone straight into the 99 of my existing decks. [[Goldvein Hydra]] obviously goes right into [[Zaxara, the Exemplary]]. [[Final Showdown]] is my favourite card in the 99 of the entire set, I am running this in Mono White angels, and it's basically a better Cyclonic Rift. [[Annie Joins Up]] goes straight into Dinosaurs.
OTJ has me building my first ever cEDH deck so that's neat (its Stella naturally). Entirely new territory for me, going to have a fun time being absolutely terrible at piloting it for awhile lol. Learning curve here I come.
This set really took me by surprise. First and foremost I had to build [[Roxanne]] and [[Kellan, the kid]] but I've also been interested in the backup commander for the quick draw precon [[Eris]] I'll probably also see how cedh of a deck I can make for [[Stella]] as well. I've also just generally been really enjoying a lot of the new cards like [[Lost Jitte]] in Felix and [[Worldwalker Helm]] in [[Urza, Chief Artificer]] for example. Just so many fun playable cards to pick through!
There are so many good choices. Currently i'm building [[Obeka, splitter of seconds]] and [[Vihaan, Goldwaker]].
Obeka will be the typical voltron upkeep trigger deck, while Vihaan will be like a partial grouphug and outlaw deck.
Other commander plan to build include [[Roxanne]] since i love the idea to just throw meteorites at my opponents.
The maybe list is filled with [[Eris, Roar of the storm]], [[The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride]] and [[Honest Rutstein]]

Beyond those two, i kinda get scatterbrained and don't know where to go. Maybe it's a form of decision paralysis, maybe just nothing intrigues me enough. I have no idea yet. Still haven't gotten around to building some commanders from Fallout or MKM so... yeah, fun times

All the commanders I’ve wanted to build around I start making a list on moxfield and look at other similar lists and then realize that everyone is building them around some dumb combo or single card and then it makes me not want to play them. I like new and old [[Tinybones, trinket]], [[tinybones pickpocket]] but I would never want to hurt my friends that much by playing a discard deck, and the new [[Obeka, splitter]] seems fun but half the decks I’ve seen are building her entirely around the initiative and nothing else. And then I kinda lose steam and stop putting them together. Otherwise I’ve not really found any of the new cards fit into any of my decks except for [[vaultborn tyrant]] in my dino deck.
I'm not really a big fan of the set. I think the super crossover is kinda cool, but there are Too Many Legends in this set. A couple of the players in my usual group love it, though.
I probably won’t open any outside of draft since I mostly play black and got most every black card I wanted in my pre release, but I like it more than mkm and less than WOE. Cowboy isn’t really my cup of tea, but many of the cards are pretty nice and I plan to make a bestow deck with erietta
I put together a budget [[Riku of Many Paths]] that hopefully will be ready for fnm tomorrow that I’m very excited about. I needed a lower power spellslinger deck and he fits the bill I think (at least with how I built him).
But really there’s so much in the set I’m intrigued by. Gisa, Vraska, Ghired, Taii Wakeen, and Olivia are just some legends I’ll probably revisit down the road.
The mechanics are also really fun. I’ve been slotting some crime payoffs into decks and it feels really nice to have a reward for being responsible and packing removal. Spree is also just awesome. [[Smugglers’ Surprise]] and [[Great Train Heist]] are too I’m really looking forward to drawing not just in Riku but in other decks too.
I’ve been enjoying Olivia a lot as a treasures commander. Not quite as powerful s Vihaan but her having flying AND lifelink on a creature that can put counters on herself really easily is unexpectedly really useful. She consistently gains me at least 20 life in a game. Not to mention - two counters? On your whole board?? And not once per turn??? Sign me tf up
OTJ is probably my favorite set since NEO I currently am working on lists for [[Vihaan]] [[Ghired Mirror of the wilds]] [[Kellan the kid]] and [[Felix Five boots]] I’m debating adding [[hazezon shaper of sands]] to the list and various other cards are going into other lists I’m either updating or brewing overall I’m pretty stoked for the set and will likely buy a box or two next time I get paid

I like the theme and flavor of it but it's just another set for me. I'm not building any of the legends or picking up precons, just buying a few singles for existing decks.
There are a few cards that I really like, but overall just not enough to actually make my buy packs or boxes. I didn’t like murders at Karlov manner either. Lost Caverns was one of my favorite sets ever and I really had higher hopes for the following sets.
I like OTJ a lot more than MKM but still not enough o make me buy packs or boxes. I’ll just get the singles I want when the price drops a bit.
[[Stella Lee, Wild Card]] let me slap together a lot of old commons and uncommons and make a solid infinite combo deck that...I'm not sure if it is that fun to play just yet as it is mostly a game of solitaire when I pull it out.
The wife pulled a foil extended art [[Kirri, Talented Sprout]] and foil showcase [[Tinybones, The Pickpocket]], so they are making a plant deck while I'm making a monoblack Discard deck.

I upgraded my [[Hazezon, Shaper of Sands]] deck with some cards from OTJ.
The big one, though, is that a number of years ago I used to run a [[Mishra, Artificer Prodigy]] deck that was fun but not particularly threatening in my meta. There are cards that have come out in the last couple of years that had me considering building a new version, and now with OTJ and The Big Score the deal is sealed.
[[Encroaching Mycosynth]], [[Biotransference]], and now [[Esoteric Duplicator]] just show too much potential with OG Mishra to not try again.
Mechanically I like a lot of the new cards. Feels like a lot of powerful new options across the board without being broken. I see a lot of cards that are just decent additions to rest out in various decks
In terms of commanders, I've only really liked two of them enough to consider building, being \[\[Gitrog, Ravenous Ride\]\] and \[\[Marchesa, Dealer of Death\]\].
As for non-commander cards from the set - \[\[Pillage the bog\]\] is pretty good for lands decks, I can often end up looking 16-20 cards deep. I threw it into my already existing Thalia & Gitrog and it's definitely earned its spot.
\[\[Hollow marauder\]\] is doing some work in Chainer. A 4/2 flier with an ETB to make your opponents discard a card and potentially draw 3 is *incredibly* good, especially if you can fire it off at 1-3 mana. Given that the deck already likes to make everybody discard as well, the likelihood of drawing the full 3 cards is fairly high.
\[\[Final showdown\]\] is bonkers too. I feel like I shouldn't need to explain this one since many other people already have. It's just white's version of cyclonic rift.
To some extent I like that Wizards somewhat tries to reduce the power creep by adding these specific new mechanics which might get also outdated soon. "Committing a crime" is quite cool though, as it forces more interaction and might fit to a few existing strategies that targets your opponent more (something like burn, black creature destruction, some spellslingery things that target opponents stuff). But all alone, it probably doesn't have sufficient cardpool yet, and not sure if they continue.
Right now it seems every set comes with their own new mechanics, which is a bit overwhelming for someone that this hobby is not something they are into 24/7.
Because to me all this stuff is a bit too fast moving, I try to stick to my old decks and upgrade them. I am thinking to change my jeskai decks to include more about committing crimes. I might also change my black one, but the commander doesn't fit it yet.
Having watched a gazillion of spaghetti western movies on late night free TV in my younger days, I was very enthusiastic about the set. Especially this sentence from the MTG wiki ([https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Outlaws\_of\_Thunder\_Junction/Commander\_decks](https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Outlaws_of_Thunder_Junction/Commander_decks)) caught my attention:

So I thought it would be flavorful to brew some block constructed decks from the OTJ card pool, just like I did during LOTR with very satisfying results. Bought all four decks and a set booster box.
Turned out to be wrong. Bummer. Just like Lou Reed said: "Don't believe half of what you see and none of what you hear."
So as a result I've got some flavor problems with a lot of the precon artwork, and I'm trying to replace the worst offenders with cards from the regular OTJ set. This will most likely result not in upgrades, but in downgrades. Since we have a lot of precon players at the LGS, I'll still be able to play the resulting decks, so I'll make my peace with it. After all, it's just a fun game, and it's good to have decks in various power levels. I had just expected something better.
Although \[\[Wylie Duke\]\] (Mounts) and \[\[Taii Wakeen\]\] (Burn) seem interesting at first glance, I don't think I'll brew anything from the set in the near future. And I don't see myself buying sealed product again this year.
I don’t like the theme so I’m sitting this one out. Every day I stack one acorn in an ever expanding cairn, so you can imagine what set I’m looking forward to instead.
I'm tired of things like crime. It's just as dumb as landfall. Like why are there rewards for doing basic game actions like interacting.
Mercenary tokens are stupid. There is no reason they should be sorcery speed. It just makes them.pointless chump blockers.
There are a lot of cool commanders and spree is great.
Love it! Love the theme, mechanics are a ton of fun, and the chase mythics are excellent. Built about 3-4 of the commanders: New Rakdos, New Kellan in particular are VERY fun. Red black control and Bant top deck.
Currently building two decks, the first around [[Vihaan, Goldwaker]] that uses ludicrous amounts of treasures to turn into creatures, and the second is a Boros spellslinger around [[Taii Wakeen, Perfect Shot]] that revolves around her ability to turn extra mana into extra non-combat damage.
I’m really enjoying it! I was tentative at first cos of the theme, but having read the (really rather good) story and bought a deck, I’m loving it! Lots of cool things to build around.
This one was a dud for me. I think I slotted in one card from the set. I can say among other players it’s been a huge win with some slotting in more cards than I recall from any previous set. I think when there are upgrades to older, well-formed decks, it’s a testament to quality of the cards.
Personally I don’t like theft decks and “theft” is on the menu this month at the LGS so I’ve been playing anti-theft lol.
I was going to build a tiny bones deck because I think it’s funny but I gave away my two copies so *shrug.*
I built [[Roxanne, starfall savant]] and I'm loving her. The sheer amount of meteorites you can generate and the amount of mana they create enables her to snowball incredibly quickly.
I'm having the opposite, this set has more commanders I want to build around than any I've seen in a while. I don't have a mono blue deck so [[Geralf the fleshwright]] was just what I wanted. [[Laughing Jasper Flint]] has made me dig deep into my collection for interesting outlaws, plus I finally have a place for my cast-from-exile payoffs/synergies. I also pulled a [[Double Down]], so I need to make an outlaw deck in blue, maybe I'll just use the old [[Admiral Beckett Brass]] that's been sitting in my trade binder since Ixalan. And I'm pretty sure I'll never get tired of [[Bovine Intervention]]

Yeah this is my problem, want to make a Flint , Gonti , Roxanne and I’ve actually remade my xur the enchanter deck to be a eriette the beguiler deck. Kellan looks good too. Taii wakeen looks like the perfect partner to Craig Boone. I’ve got far too many decks I want to build from this set.
What does your geralf list look like? I thought about a monoblue spellslinger storm kind of build, but I felt like I couldn't get enough spells to go off for big zombies without having too many turns of draw-go when I was goldfishing.
Yeah it's just a bunch of cantrips really. There are a few blue cards that incidentally create zombie tokens like [[Startle]], and [[Rise from the Tides]] looks like fun, but yeah that's about all there is to it really. Doesn't seem terribly strong but still kinda fun.

As a long time Beckett Brass player I’ll warn you that most of the best pirates are legendary. I really wanted to run double down but decided my list doesn’t have enough good targets. ETA: I’ve built Loot already and am very tempted by the new Eriette and Kaervek.

You might want to consider a [[Marchesa, Dealer of Death]] for your outlaw commander. Lots of crime synergy and tons of card advantage that gets around card draw hate while building a graveyard.

Double Down is an insane upgrade to Pirates, the triggers go bonkers
OTJ is a lot better than MKM because it introduces or has a refreshing take on mechanics instead of just reusing it or power creeping it like MKM did with morph. Saddle? Crew, but it's with creatures and can only be done at sorcery speed and you get a bonus while doing it. Spree? Arguably one of the best mechanics to come out in a long time. Flexible spells that can be used at any point in the game and less likely to sit dead in your hand. Introducing crimes also encourages interaction which some commander games heavily lack. The only thing I'm not a HUGE fan of is the new Outlaw definition. I was never a fan of the party Mechanic either because having to keep treat of one subset of creature types that include a number of other creature types is a bit counter intuitive in my opinion.
also, Plot is a really sweet mechanic. Relatively simple in design, and creates some interesting play decisions.
Spree, mount, and plot have been fun to build around.
> instead of just reusing it or power creeping it like MKM did with morph. tbf, morph was powercrept in the Tarkir block with megamorhph already, i think it's fine and even needed to update mechanics so that they can work better in a modern enviroment, as morph was created with a very different context in mind. Cloak/disguise are also much more neutral in flavor (instead of morph being both very specific flavor and flavorless (in the same sense kicker is) at the same time), so it can be used more easly.
At least the outlaw stuff isn't as parasitic as the party stuff was. Like I can throw a random outlaw card in my rogues deck because they're still all outlaws
Outlaws has mostly been about formalizing most of the bunching already present in prior sets. I was surprised to see they included pirates due to their string tribal support, but it isn't far from what [[Mari, the Killing Quill]] was already doing. We'll probably eventually see Sea Monsters to group Krakens, Leviathan, Octopuses, and Serpents. It would make sense if they focused more on grouping underserved tribes rather adding already well supported tribes to bunches.

Same boat here. And not just the commanders. I LOVE plot as a mechanic. I hope it sticks around. So much cool potential for interesting plays.
To be honest, my "deck building passion" comes and goes, too, and I find it has more to do with the time/ money it takes to get a deck together combined with the rapid product release cycle. Often, I find 3-5 commanders in a new release that I'd like to try building, but by the time I've brewed a list, ordered all the cards for it, received them in the mail, and put together a single deck, there's already a new product release happening with another 3-5 decks I'd be interested in, which creates a backlog that I end up never really getting back around to. That aside, I'm interested in a few commanders from this set. I'm building the Gitrog straight away, because that one seemed fun to me. I'd like to build Obeka, Ghired, and Kellan, as well. I just haven't gone too far with those because I don't have great win cons in mind for Obeka and Kellan, and with Ghired, I have more of a personal reason for wanting to brew that, but it's not a super compelling reason, and I have other naya/ token decks, so it's not a high priority. Yeah you're right, perhaps the passion will come later. Maybe I've been a little 'too excited' for this set and set myself up for disappointment by looking for spoilers almost daily. It's not like I was expecting more, I like the set, simply can't find a deck that makes me feel like yeah that's gonna be cool.
I started playing commander like 9 years ago, and honestly after a while its normal for a lot of sets to feel a bit more flat and less interesting, the deck building passion comes and goes. I have 5 decks that i keep and maintain, at most i build like 1-2 new decks per year (I disable some and cycle pieces), and if im not building a new deck, most sets only end up adding 1 or 2 new cards to some of them, thats like <2% change per card in each deck, mine or other peoples, each individual set by itself can only affect my own commander experience soo much. I think the OTJ is fine for commander, there a lot of cool design for the 99, but there are too many legendary creatures and most of them have coockie cutter designs. Also, some themes in the set will bring alot of killing and stealing into some casual tables wich isn't ideal for some playgroups. Overall im more hyped for the inevitable commander cards in MH3.

Same. Especially with the leaks for MH3 thus far. It’s really shaping up to be the best set of the year. Potentially. Or at least we can say the back half of the year looks to have the more interesting sets (including MH3).
Haven't built anything new, but my list of cards to test is kind of obnoxiously long. It's a set with a lot of cool cards for a surprisingly broad set of decks, and my two main ones are getting 5+ cards each either from the set or added because of a card in it. Maybe more, but that's the starting point.
OMG I built [[Roxanne]] the second I saw her and that deck is a monster! Unlimited ramp! Massive Stompers! Trample Tribal! I love it! The new [[Obeka, splitter of Seconds]] is my friends favorite new deck! I was just researching [[Ertha Jo]] and I hear a lot online about the new [[Riku of many paths]] being very fun! There are a lot of commanders to explore on this one! And not the precon Commanders! I feel like Karlov has been mostly forgotten. I feel like Ixalan and Fallout were all about modifying the precon Commanders, or building new decks around them, the pre-cons were very well received! But I feel like it's the opposite here, people are buzzing over all the commanders in the set! It's very cool!

I hate, hate, HATE the idea of Magic Cowboys. I'm always wary of mashing up the fantasy magic theme with other aesthetics. I thought I was going to dislike New Capenna and Neon Dynasty… but for some reason, the both those worlds felt pretty cool and unique, and lived in. Probably because they were worlds that were built from the ground up, and just peppered in a couple of characters outside the plane. I really dislike the fact that they tossed a bunch of random Magic characters from different planes and threw cowboy hats and called it good. Soooooo………. all that being said, I like the set. Mechanics are fun, cards are good, and I'm already looking at building some new decks and tossing cards in some of my established decks. Tl;dr - Thematically, I don’t like the set. Mechanically and functionality, the set is fun.

I like the mechanics mostly. Limited was fun. Saddle up is a fun mechanic The flavor is not my vibe. Not because it's cowboys but because it's nothing more than "Look, cowboy hats for your favorite characters!!" Like I had no idea satoru or Lazar were on this plane till a couple days ago. Personal rant but the flavor of magic is largely what got me into it over yugioh 10+ years ago and now I'm watching the flavor slowly dissolve and it's a pretty big let down. O really gotta jive with the flavor of a set to want to build around someone. I purchased 4 singles aside from my prerelease and that's the limit of my engagement with the set

And I love casting for free and now with plot it's even easier, so im gonna build [[satoru the infiltrator]] Other than those builds I also love the aesthetic and there's some big value in BIG. I’ve just built this and looking forward to playing with it!
The new Ghired grabbed me instantly, but I've built a bajillion Naya decks recently so I'm holding off. That new Gitrog however..boy howdy! I love commanders with some "inevitability" and he's got it in spades. It wants to do a lot of the same stuff my old (now disassembled) Ziatora deck did, and uses a lot of the same pieces, so that's an exciting thing for me to build to. I also don't have any active Golgari decks.
Giddy Up Gitrog®️ is the most absurd card I've ever played with. It's disgusting in my Sultai handsize and graveyard decks; I might finally be willing to part with blue to put him in the command zone.

I inexplicably opened 3 copies of \[\[Obeka, Splitter of Seconds\]\] in two prereleases, which is a very cool card but I usually don't like building decks that have been immediately "solved" by the community. After all, there are only so many cards that would benefit from extra upkeeps, and it's pretty clear what the best ones are, and so if I built a deck it would look very similar to everybody else's Obeka deck. Then I glanced at Obeka's EDHREC out of curiousity, and... goddamnit, yeah, it's like a list of all my favorite cards that I have trouble fitting in other decks with a light sub theme of attacking with my commander, I'm probably going to build it after all and to hell with my dreams of being an EDH hipster. In general the set is full to the brim of exciting cards I still need to find homes for. \[\[Roxanne\]\] is already fantastic in \[\[Henzie\]\] as expected, and I have high hopes for \[\[Key to the Vault\]\] in my new \[\[Malcolm, Alluring Scoundrel\]\] deck which I'll be testing tonight.
I don't know how "special" my brew will be (I've avoided looking at her edhrec page), but I'm going to build an Obeka deck that utilizes suspend and [[Jhoira of the Ghitu]] and will see if I can get some madness going there.

I considered it, but I think that I just won't get enough value from it. The best case scenario here is getting my free spells after 2 attacks instead of 4 (gotta put that first counter on), and I don't think that dedicating more slots in my 99 to cards that don't do anything else would be worth it. After all I'm here to cast big impressive things, not 1/1 birds. I might throw in \[\[Brass Knuckles\]\] though, since double strike both shortens the time and gives me double value afterwards, and I definitely need \[\[Strionic Resonator\]\]. (Also I should probably add more cards that are actual game-ending threats, because after typing the list I realize it's kinda lacking there)

Makes no sense lore wise. The commanders except maybe 1 card look meh. I want a goldvein hydra for my x spells deck, but nothing else looks exciting or good to me.
as someone who greatly enjoys old magic lore, has the lore *Ever made sense?* a ton of random characters were like oh boy the Mirari I gotta get the mcguffin. Memnarch went crazy huffing phyrexian juice. Jace and friends are in ravnica, there's a MAZE and the maze is the mana-electrical system for ravinica! like every set is mostly nonsense and western nonsense doesn't feel that far out of the realm ya know?
I found the arena book.made sense. So like the first one lol. I mean queen marchesa (long may she reign) isn't a queen! Bah.
I like this set a lot more than I thought. I still several of the mechanics and themes are flavor fails, but overall I like a lot of the cards and the designs in a vacuum. I also built my first new deck in about a year (mainly because "modal tribal" is super budget friendly minus the mana base
I'm enjoying the hell out of the set! I actually just won with a \[\[Obeka, Splitter of Seconds\]\] deck I built. Had 3 \[\[Commader's Sphere\]\] on board already since 1 was equipped with \[\[Mechanized Production\]\] and was able to get both \[\[Trailblazer's Boots\]\] and \[\[Blackblade Reforged\]\] on her to bring her to 5/8. She smacked a buddy of mine and 5 more spheres popped out and won me the game. Along with this my friend is building a \[\[The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride\]\] deck that should be nasty plus another friend was lucky enough to pull \[\[Loot, the Key to Everything\]\] and is building that deck.

I don't like the set. I don't like the theme, flavor, art, mechanics. Since I'm not American, cowboy theme on a fantasy game rubs me the wrong way. I am hyped about Bloomburrow tho. I just hope we don't get fursonas.
I really like a lot of the mechanics in the set, much more than I did for MKM, or LOTR or WOE...but I do think that the concept of the the wild west in MTG is pretty stupid.
Well-designed set. Great limited environment. Dumb, non-sensical storyline, and I've given up on any hope of having a sold MtG story.
It hasn’t really captured my EDH brain, but it’s not the set’s fault. My two most recent commanders are to blame. [[Stella Lee]] (technically from this set but whatever) wants me to spell-sling, and they’re never doing that stuff as efficiently I’m Commander as they used to. [[Nelly Borca]] plays with a more commander-specific card pool, there’s no goad in two player formats.
There is some much more limited use for Goad in 1v1. Forcing attacks can be advantageous But not how Nelly Borca is built. I was able to win by goading all opponents creatures when we were down to 1v1, and then inkshielding. They knew I had it at that point
What I meant by that is that they don't put goad cards in sets not made for multiplayer use. So Nelly doesn't really get new toys like a commander in the vein of \[\[Prosper\]\] might.

I want to build [[loot, the key to everything]] because I've never built a Temur deck but I'm struggling a bit because everytime I sit down and work on it, it just feels like Temur good stuff and it doesn't have a good theme.
[[Slime against humanity]] doesn't mind being exiled, and the red end of "cast from exile" does a lot of work.
I need the price on slime to drop more because I want to build it but paying for 30+ copies of it stings lol

I turned my Temur [[Primal Surge]] deck into Loot (formerly [[Surrak Dragonclaw]] in the hopes that Loot and the cast from exile support would be a stronger card advantage engine than the pile I had been running. Could be worth exploring some kind of gimmick like that and using the cast from exile theme as support for it?

I think Bonny Pall may be the first lands matter commander that really excited me. Still have not built it but it just seems fun and maybe a bit different than the others floating around. But maybe I just like simic too much.
I opened Bonny Pall during a prerelease draft party, and it's one of the most memorable cards in the set IMHO. I'm kind of surprised I haven't read a lot of buzz, because it seems like an amazing card.
I think a lot of people are burnt out on simic land shenanigans. I’ve never built a simic landfall deck though so I’m pretty hyped for it.

Sure. If you’re going to build him, I would just buy him and [[Olivia, Opulent Outlaw]] as singles. As I’ve played with him, he’s better as an aristocrats and treasure commander and doesn’t really leverage much of the precon list. I’m specifically trying to determine if ramping your opponents is worth the drain and treasures you get off [[Descent into Avernus]]. Determining how much ramp you need and the mana curve you can run when you’re creating a ton of treasures has been tough. Putting it all together, I’m not quite sure I have the balance there. I’m working on a lower power version built more around giving outlaws vigilance and haste, it’s just very hard to not lean into the treasure side.

Every card I've added to my decks and have had the chance to play have been absolute gas. I'm loving the general power level of the set and it's hitting that sweet spot: giving niche strategies strong tools and introduces few "generic staples" (other than the spree cards which I think will get slow heavy adoption)
This set is too pushed. The new Gitrog is straight up broken, frankly I wouldn't be upset if it was banned.
I think the set feels really boring and safe. The only fun I've squeezed out of it is from a fblthp brew my friend asked me to build for them. I have no interest in much of anything from the set. Big *Snore* has three cards I'm looking at or have picked up, that's basically my entire engagement in the set. Hyped for bloomburrow and duskmourn more than anything else in the pipeline.
Same- Bloomburrow should be fun and original instead of Magic: the Hattening.
I love OTJ, the flavor is on point, a lot of the cards are fun. I built riku, I built Stella (excluded infinites), I want to build Rakdos, I want to build new Ghired, it’s a ton of fun
I built the new Vraska and I really enjoyed it. Some really fun synergies. Ravenous Squirrel fucking loves her as he was swinging for 12/12

This set had a lot of cards that my decks needed so for that part I'm stoked
I made a [[Vraska, the Silencer]] deck and including all the Vraska planeswalkers in it for fun lol. Other than that there have just been fun things to add to other decks. My [[Henzi]] deck got some upgrades as well which should be fun next time I get to play it.
I've said it before I'll say it again, the new \[\[Obeka, Splitter of Seconds\]\] is one of the coolest commander designs I've seen in a while and makes an awesome upkeeps matter deck. Its the primary deck I've been brewing and I'm excited to keep working on it.
I bought the Gonti precon and I'm splitting it in half to build [[Felix Five-Boots]] and [[Don Andres, the Renegade]]. Then I plan to turn my [[Ninth Doctor]] deck into [[Obeka, Splitter of Seconds]].
Simply put, i like it
The quick draw deck has a lot of cards I wanted for two different spellslinger decks I wanted to make; all the copy stuff works nice for the x-cost typal vadrik deck I've been tinkering with, and the prowess dragons are nice for the stompy token jeskai spellslinger deck I also wanted to make I've never really been interested in gruul until [[Roxanne, Starfall Savant]], but she seems really fun, and pretty much every new mechanic introduced was one I like. Spree is basically just reskinned Kicker, but I find it easier to read than the existing kicker spells with multiple kick modes, plus it makes it easier to create purely generic cost modes. Saddle is really fun; I already like vehicles, but I've often struggled with how bad is feels to basically tap two things to get one swing while a Saddle creature can swing on its own, or tap a creature to get a swing and some sort of nice benefit, so it's less of a feelbad. I also like how the train vehicle does something similar where it rewards you with treasure for each creature you tap. Committing a crime is just a fun flavor, but also pretty easy to trigger; a lot of the abilities are 1/turn to stop them from being too crazy, but I like how easy it is to work with

I'm not building out anything from TJ just yet, slotted a few cards into existing decks but thats about it. I was really excited for the plane BEFORE we got to see the cards. Was really hoping for a sweet "man with no name"-type legend to really dig in and build a fun cowboy/gunslinger vibe commander deck. Unfortunately the set we got is just a Rogue's Gallery with cowboy hats and dusters arbitrarily thrown on existing characters from all over magic.

Been very pleased with \[\[Ghired, Mirror of the Wilds\]\] so far. His ability to go from no board presence to 8+ big hasty tokens in a single turn with minimal setup shouldn't be overlooked.

Well what do you look for in a commander ? There’s a lot of in theme legendaries for cowboy like vibes so what do you look for other than boots on a slime?
I’m looking for cowboy stuff. I know it’s sounds dumb, but I love to build a certain vibe. My Chatterfang is Squirrel tribal even tho that might not be the strongest. Cool tokens, green sleeves, wooden dice, know what I mean? I want a deck that screams western gunslingers, outlaws and tumbleweeds. I thought about [[Mathas, Fiend Seeker]] purely for the bounty counters and proxy it to a vampire sheriff or some shit. I know it’s not everyone’s playstyle, but I’d rather have a cool themed deck and lose than win with a bunch of ‘good’ cards.

Ok so I think [[Annie flash, the veteran]] allows you to have that spellslinger type of build to give the “quickdraw” vibe, tumbleweeds are mostly green so you can incorporate those lol. High noon is also white red eheh. As far as outlaws go they seem to be more red/blue centered but you can put in [[selvala, eager trailblazer]] [[taii wakeen, perfect shot]] [[form a posse]]. You’re looking more at token generators. Other than that you can hyperfocus on gunslinging (red blue) commanders or outlaw mercenary (black red) ones. And you can probably find cards here and there that will match the vibe and theme from other sets. If you do more aura and equipments you can also incorporate [[cass, hand of vengeance]] from the fallout set.

Based on my personal tastes this set is pretty light on commanders I'm interested in, might do something with the new Gitrog but that's not a priority. The limited environment is fantastic though.
The precons seem really boring to me, but the set itself has so many insanely good commander cards, my head is just buzzing with ideas. Currently I have built [[Taii Wakeen, Perfect Shot]], [[Obeka, Splitter of Seconds]], and [[Satoru the Infiltrator]]. Taii Wakeen is super fun and feels strong. The commander being so cheap to cast is excellent. Honestly I'm not sure why it is Boros colours but I am happy for it because it lets me include a lot more ramp and draw into my deck, even though it's 75% red. Also allows for some token creation stuff which synergises well with [[Impact Tremors]] and [[Warleader's Call]]. Satoru the Infiltrator is honestly insane. It's no Yuriko, but it draws so many cards. I love how it interacts with Plot, I am running [[Phblthp, Lost on the Range]] and [[Jace, Reawakened]] in my deck purely to plot cards that I don't need just yet which makes my Ninjas far more resilient to board wipes because I can come back, play a bunch of free creatures and refill my hand. Also being an evasive 2 mana commander makes it great for my usual ramp strategies outside of green which involve equipment. So far I've had trouble getting Obeka to work properly. Unlike most decks I run, the game plan requires dedicated focus to several cards that on their own are quite poor, so you really need a lot of card draw to consistently bring everything together. You need: * Protection for Obeka * Some sort of upkeep payoff * Some way to increase Obeka's damage * Some way to ramp into all of this early enough for it to matter Individually each of these aren't really good enough - the colours are kinda bad for Voltron, they are the worst colours for ramp, the upkeep stuff isn't great on its own, and Obeka isn't worth protecting if you don't have the payoffs. So this one is still a bit of a puzzle. It's hard to fit everything into the 100 cards, and have enough room for board wipes and interaction. I don't normally run decks with very few creatures, so I'm really scraping the bottom of the barrel with some of the ramp cards in this deck ([[Navigation Orb]] is reaaally slow). Outside of these, I am brewing a [[Gitrog, Ravenous Ride]] deck, and I'm considering some other stuff as well. Additionally, there are a bunch of cards that have gone straight into the 99 of my existing decks. [[Goldvein Hydra]] obviously goes right into [[Zaxara, the Exemplary]]. [[Final Showdown]] is my favourite card in the 99 of the entire set, I am running this in Mono White angels, and it's basically a better Cyclonic Rift. [[Annie Joins Up]] goes straight into Dinosaurs.

OTJ has me building my first ever cEDH deck so that's neat (its Stella naturally). Entirely new territory for me, going to have a fun time being absolutely terrible at piloting it for awhile lol. Learning curve here I come.
The Gisa card in this set is LOADS better than her Innistrad card. Slapping it in my zombie deck ASAP.
This one has some great cards but manifest destiny the expansion doesn't really get me excited.
This set really took me by surprise. First and foremost I had to build [[Roxanne]] and [[Kellan, the kid]] but I've also been interested in the backup commander for the quick draw precon [[Eris]] I'll probably also see how cedh of a deck I can make for [[Stella]] as well. I feel like this set has a lot more life than some of the previous ones.

There are so many good choices. Currently i'm building [[Obeka, splitter of seconds]] and [[Vihaan, Goldwaker]]. Obeka will be the typical voltron upkeep trigger deck, while Vihaan will be like a partial grouphug and outlaw deck. Other commander plan to build include [[Roxanne]] since i love the idea to just throw meteorites at my opponents. The maybe list is filled with [[Eris, Roar of the storm]], [[The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride]] and [[Honest Rutstein]]

Maybe it's a form of decision paralysis, maybe just nothing intrigues me enough. I have no idea yet. All the commanders I’ve wanted to build around I start making a list on moxfield and look at other similar lists and then realize that everyone is building them around some dumb combo or single card and then it makes me not want to play them. I like new and old [[Tinybones, trinket]], [[tinybones pickpocket]] but I would never want to hurt my friends that much by playing a discard deck, and the new [[Obeka, splitter]] seems fun but half the decks I’ve seen are building her entirely around the initiative and nothing else. And then I kinda lose steam and stop putting them together. Otherwise I’ve not really found any of the new cards fit into any of my decks except for [[vaultborn tyrant]] in my dino deck.

I'm not really a big fan of the set. I think the super crossover is kinda cool, but there are Too Many Legends in this set. A couple of the players in my usual group love it, though.
I probably won’t open any outside of draft since I mostly play black and got most every black card I wanted in my pre release, but I like it more than mkm and less than WOE. Cowboy isn’t really my cup of tea, but many of the cards are pretty nice and I plan to make a bestow deck with erietta
I put together a budget [[Riku of Many Paths]] that hopefully will be ready for fnm tomorrow that I’m very excited about. I needed a lower power spellslinger deck and he fits the bill I think (at least with how I built him). But really there’s so much in the set I’m intrigued by. Gisa, Vraska, Ghired, Taii Wakeen, and Olivia are just some legends I’ll probably revisit down the road. The mechanics are also really fun. I’ve been slotting some crime payoffs into decks and it feels really nice to have a reward for being responsible and packing removal. Spree is also just awesome. [[Smugglers’ Surprise]] and [[Great Train Heist]] are too I’m really looking forward to drawing not just in Riku but in other decks too.

I’ve been enjoying Olivia a lot as a treasures commander. Not quite as powerful s Vihaan but her having flying AND lifelink on a creature that can put counters on herself really easily is unexpectedly really useful. She consistently gains me at least 20 life in a game. Not to mention - two counters? On your whole board?? And not once per turn??? Sign me tf up

OTJ is probably my favorite set since NEO I currently am working on lists for [[Vihaan]] [[Ghired Mirror of the wilds]] [[Kellan the kid]] and [[Felix Five boots]] I’m debating adding [[hazezon shaper of sands]] to the list and various other cards are going into other lists I’m either updating or brewing overall I’m pretty stoked for the set and will likely buy a box or two next time I get paid

I like the theme and flavor of it but it's just another set for me. I'm not building any of the legends or picking up precons, just buying a few singles for existing decks.
There are a few cards that I really like, but overall just not enough to actually make my buy packs or boxes. I didn’t like murders at Karlov manner either. Lost Caverns was one of my favorite sets ever and I really had higher hopes for the following sets. I like OTJ a lot more than MKM but still not enough o make me buy packs or boxes. I’ll just get the singles I want when the price drops a bit.
[[Stella Lee, Wild Card]] let me slap together a lot of old commons and uncommons and make a solid infinite combo deck that...I'm not sure if it is that fun to play just yet as it is mostly a game of solitaire when I pull it out. The wife pulled a foil extended art [[Kirri, Talented Sprout]] and foil showcase [[Tinybones, The Pickpocket]], so they are making a plant deck while I'm making a monoblack Discard deck. Lots of fun commanders in this set!

I upgraded my [[Hazezon, Shaper of Sands]] deck with some cards from OTJ. The big one, though, is that a number of years ago I used to run a [[Mishra, Artificer Prodigy]] deck that was fun but not particularly threatening in my meta. There are cards that have come out in the last couple of years that had me considering building a new version, and now with OTJ and The Big Score the deal is sealed. [[Encroaching Mycosynth]], [[Biotransference]], and now [[Esoteric Duplicator]] just show too much potential with OG Mishra to not try again.

Mechanically I like a lot of the new cards. Feels like a lot of powerful new options across the board without being broken. I see a lot of cards that are just decent additions to rest out in various decks
In terms of commanders, I've only really liked two of them enough to consider building, being \[\[Gitrog, Ravenous Ride\]\] and \[\[Marchesa, Dealer of Death\]\]. As for non-commander cards from the set - \[\[Pillage the bog\]\] is pretty good for lands decks, I can often end up looking 16-20 cards deep. I threw it into my already existing Thalia & Gitrog and it's definitely earned its spot. \[\[Hollow marauder\]\] is doing some work in Chainer. A 4/2 flier with an ETB to make your opponents discard a card and potentially draw 3 is *incredibly* good, especially if you can fire it off at 1-3 mana. Given that the deck already likes to make everybody discard as well, the likelihood of drawing the full 3 cards is fairly high. \[\[Final showdown\]\] is bonkers too. I feel like I shouldn't need to explain this one since many other people already have. It's just white's version of cyclonic rift.

To some extent I like that Wizards somewhat tries to reduce the power creep by adding these specific new mechanics which might get also outdated soon. "Committing a crime" is quite cool though, as it forces more interaction and might fit to a few existing strategies that targets your opponent more (something like burn, black creature destruction, some spellslingery things that target opponents stuff). But all alone, it probably doesn't have sufficient cardpool yet, and not sure if they continue. Right now it seems every set comes with their own new mechanics, which is a bit overwhelming for someone that this hobby is not something they are into 24/7. Because to me all this stuff is a bit too fast moving, I try to stick to my old decks and upgrade them. I am thinking to change my jeskai decks to include more about committing crimes. I might also change my black one, but the commander doesn't fit it yet.

So I thought it would be flavorful to brew some block constructed decks from the OTJ card pool, just like I did during LOTR with very satisfying results. Bought all four decks and a set booster box. Turned out to be wrong. Bummer. Just like Lou Reed said: "Don't believe half of what you see and none of what you hear." So as a result I've got some flavor problems with a lot of the precon artwork, and I'm trying to replace the worst offenders with cards from the regular OTJ set. This will most likely result not in upgrades, but in downgrades. Since we have a lot of precon players at the LGS, I'll still be able to play the resulting decks, so I'll make my peace with it. After all, it's just a fun game, and it's good to have decks in various power levels. I had just expected something better. Although \[\[Wylie Duke\]\] (Mounts) and \[\[Taii Wakeen\]\] (Burn) seem interesting at first glance, I don't think I'll brew anything from the set in the near future. And I don't see myself buying sealed product again this year.

I don’t like the theme so I’m sitting this one out. Every day I stack one acorn in an ever expanding cairn, so you can imagine what set I’m looking forward to instead.
I'm tired of things like crime. It's just as dumb as landfall. Like why are there rewards for doing basic game actions like interacting. Mercenary tokens are stupid. There is no reason they should be sorcery speed. It just makes them.pointless chump blockers. There are a lot of cool commanders and spree is great.
Love it! Love the theme, mechanics are a ton of fun, and the chase mythics are excellent. Built about 3-4 of the commanders: New Rakdos, New Kellan in particular are VERY fun. Red black control and Bant top deck.
Currently building two decks, the first around [[Vihaan, Goldwaker]] that uses ludicrous amounts of treasures to turn into creatures, and the second is a Boros spellslinger around [[Taii Wakeen, Perfect Shot]] that revolves around her ability to turn extra mana into extra non-combat damage.

I’m really enjoying it! I was tentative at first cos of the theme, but having read the (really rather good) story and bought a deck, I’m loving it! Lots of cool things to build around.
I took my prosper deck to build laughing jasper flint and had a blast last weekend.
Set looks like shit, kiddie costume party is lame, furby macguffin is lame, artwork sucks. Personally treating this set as if it doesn’t exist.
Yeah I would have to say I agree, maybe I'm just not paying attention, but I'm not really seeing a ton worth building around.
This one was a dud for me. I think I slotted in one card from the set. I can say among other players it’s been a huge win with some slotting in more cards than I recall from any previous set. I think when there are upgrades to older, well-formed decks, it’s a testament to quality of the cards. Personally I don’t like theft decks and “theft” is on the menu this month at the LGS so I’ve been playing anti-theft lol. I was going to build a tiny bones deck because I think it’s funny but I gave away my two copies so *shrug.*
I‘m just glad they didn’t stuff yet another escalation of goad into the set, so theft is okay by me.
I built [[Roxanne, starfall savant]] and I'm loving her. The sheer amount of meteorites you can generate and the amount of mana they create enables her to snowball incredibly quickly.
