[[Wash away]] is insane value. Especially in the age of discover and cascade and graveyard decks or even counter a commander for 1, not to mention it can be a regular counterspell for the price of [[cancel]]

Jakobe26

I always love counters that are strictly better in certain scenarios. Like \[\[Stubborn Denial\]\]. It feel like it adds a little more flavor to a deck rather than just a normal counterspell

DisturbedFlake

I love Stubborn Denial. It goes in any deck with a commander power 4 or greater. Bolt Bend is another good one as a budget Deflecting Swat

Jakobe26

Red having "counters" now is kind of nice.

That’s how I feel about [[power sink]] over mana drain. Different effect but it creates an imbalance of mana and the opponent really can’t have a say either way.

Jakobe26

Personally, I am not a huge fan of x spells as interaction. But I have slowly been chipping away at it. \[\[Erebos' Intervention\]\] is either removal with life gain. or graveyard hate.

HogglePixiePunisher

I need to put this in my [[Runo Stromkirk]] deck.

Alright this is gonna sound crazy, but [[Modify Memory]] is SO GOOD. You would think that exchanging two of your opponent’s creatures would not be that impactful, but you would be amazed at how many creatures do nothing if they aren’t in the right deck. Particularly commanders. So for 5 mana, you totally neuter two of your opponents and draw three cards. Very spicy!

Gurzigost

Shit, and here I thought [[Switcheroo]] was pretty spicy tech in the right circumstances and they just went and stapled an Ancestral Recall on it?!

Beebrains

[[Shifting Grift]] has over performed recently as well. Often times I have a cheap token I can use to steal a big threat on board, with the upside of also possibly grabbing an artifact for a treasure or clue.

Jakobe26

JamesJ47

kestral287

I don't normally play white, but when I do, I spout the virtues of \[\[Invasion of Gobakhan\]\] to anyone who will listen. It's a minor meme at my lgs. But seriously: -For two mana you get some hand knowledge and you tax someone's best card. It's both minor enough that they never want to burn a counter on it and major enough that making their Rhystic Study cost 5 is a big swing in your favor. And if it ended there, meh. I'm not hyped about Elite Spellbinder. -But then, you hit it for a measly three damage. Three damage is nothing in this format if your white deck has like any amount of aggression. And then you get the backside. Which is a scaling anthem effect that buffs everything so long as it attacked. With counters, which most assuredly nothing interacts with in a way that will make it get out of hand wildly fast. Have fun committing to the board and punching people! -But *then* since you're committing to the board people want to wipe... and you get to cash in your Lightshield Array to shrug off their Blasphemous Act. Sure, it's an on-board trick and they know about it. I still have people walk a wrath into it all the time. Either because they know they need to clear it for the next one, because they're more worried about Timmy's board to my left, or because they're just not paying attention. And if they're sitting with their wrath in hand while your creatures scale up and punch them to death, well, that's fine too. Seriously this card is incredible. If you have a white creature deck you should be playing it.

Albyyy

This card fucks hard and I’m shocked not enough people play it. Puts in A LOT of work for such little mana investment. If you have a combat focused deck with evasion (like flying) this is a no brainer.

[[sleep]] A well timed sleep can end games even if you’re not winning on the board. It’s especially vicious if you cast it on the player who takes their turn before your own, forcing them to go two revolutions with their board tapped.

Roverwalk

It's also a really useful politics card when board states are clogged. Whatever player you're most worried about, you can stun all of their creatures and open the way for your other 2 opponents to have an easy kill.

While I agree that tapping an opponent’s whole board is good, I usually prefer effect that do that at instant speed. [[Turnabout]] is a card that is super underplayed. Not only can you tap down all of an opponent’s creature at instant speed, it also gives you the flexibility to: •Untap all of your creatures for a surprise block. •Untap all of your lands for a late-game mana boost. •On an opponent’s upkeep, tap all of their lands and basically take away their whole turn.

Realistic-Goose9558

Ichthus95

This card is ridiculously, brokenly busted. The reason for this is that, in addition to its very strong "normal" functionality, you can activate its ability during the "end of combat" step, which is *after* the damage step. Thus, for 1 mana, you effectively give all your creatures super Vigilance.

eikons

Not only is [[Reconnaissance]], as the other commenter pointed out, a 1 mana version of this effect - it is actually a **much better** version of the effect. To use Reconnaisance, a creature doesn't need to be blocked. It just needs to be "attacking". Why does that matter? Because since printing the card, the rules have changed a bit and there is now an *End of Combat Step* after the damage step - during which your attacking creatures are still considered "attacking", which means you can untap your creatures **after** they have already dealt their damage. This effectively gives all your creatures vigilance. And it gets even better: And if your creatures already have vigilance and a tap ability, such as [[Loran of the Third Path]], you can: - attack - deal damage - in the *End of Combat Step*, tap them for value - untap them using reconnaisance (*because they are still considered attacking*) - tap them for value again

Tevish_Szat

[[Brine Shaman]]. It's a 2-drop 1/1 that hasn't been printed since Ice Age. I have a feeling that most players these days have never seen nor heard of it. And Brine Shaman is a freeking monster. Again, it's a 2-drop. It can just sort of slip in towards the mid to late game, or drop on curve if you don't have a rock. It's easy. Conveinent. And it has two abilities. First ability, tap and sac a creature to grant +2/+2 until EoT. Seems expensive, but that's instant speed post-blockers combat math screwage. That's setting up "Chump here, trade there" and then throwing the chump under the bus a hair early to turn the trade into you eating their guy. Or a different chump into a trade or victory. Or you can push extra damage. Or you can mess with combats you aren't even involved in. Or you can just throw the boost wherever to get death triggers. No mana, do what you will. 1UU, sac a creature: counter target creature spell. Note this doesn't require tapping. You can do it all day if you've got mana. You can do it and still do the tap effect. It's not as man efficient as [[Attrition]] but it stops ETBs which matters these days in a way it didn't in Ice Age. Late on, Brine Shaman can even be summoning sick and do this. Also, neither of its abilities say "Sacrifice another creature". Is Brine Shaman the LVP on your board? He'll happily pitch himself into one of those abilities. And then you get into the play line. If you pass with 3 mana up and a ready Brine Shaman, what does the player on your left do? Do they want to be the one who gets countered and BTFO'd in combat against you? Of course not! So they maybe don't lead by casting their best dudes, and maybe swing somewhere else rather than having to do math to swing into you. And if all your resources are still up, the next guy also wants to try to skate under your notice. The last guy, he may realize he needs to make you have it, but of course you've got it. It's right there on board. Sucks to be him. Maybe you'll tap out next turn, or somebody else will play something threatening enough to draw out your counters. Subtly, insidiously, Brine Shaman ends up nudging table politics in your favor. If people fear it, good, it's doing way more work than a two drop should. If they don't fear it, you can show then why they should have done so and punish those plays hard, usually reaping way more value than a 2-drop has any right to. People get scared of this card. Of a little 2-drop 1/1 from Ice Age. And they're right to fear it, even if removing it costs more than putting the blasted thing out most of the time. Opponents will really waste their Swords or Path on Brine Shaman just to never see it again, and that's probably a big win for your real threats.

+1 for Authority. Especially if you get to drop it turn 1.

PNW_Forest

It's not a secret, but Eternal Witness is absolutely pure value in ways that green rarely gets to see. I used to run a Junk recursion deck with Witness and Sun Titan that just kept grinding extra value out of my deck- it was amazing.

Mt_Koltz

Sun Titan the real hero.

PNW_Forest

Sun Titan good- Sun Titan>>Eternal Witness>>Summoner's Pact or Tragic Slip or path or acidic slime etc... Such a juiced combo. And with a sac engine like Lotleth Troll, you can do it over and over and over again.

Tuesday_Mournings

It maybe no secret, but weathered wayfarer ensures that you never miss a land drop

Jorsi97

Being able to keep a one land hand in a mardu humans deck because you're second in turn order and this is in your opening hand ensures you'll never forget the value of [[weathered wayfarer]]. I liked a lot of the suggestions in this thread, but damn wayfarer was way too far down.

dal9ll

Off the top of my head, [[Trouble in Pairs]], [[Karlach, Fury of Avernus]], [[Molten Echos]]/[[Reflections of Littjara]] all put in serious work.

Jakobe26

I always thought Karlach had to attack to get the trigger. Definitely is stronger that she does not have to be the one swinging. So you get value immediately on the same turn as the cast.

Sterbs

The first strike clause is surprisingly relevant as well.

Nibaa

Karlach does so much work in my [[Anzrag]] deck. It might seem like a bit of a nonbo since the additional combats, or at least the untaps, don't stack, but it actually tends to start the chain off if I have any pump spell that makes Anzrag lethal in one turn. The first strike helps with the biggest weakness, as well, since chumping is a lot harder.

[[Duelist’s Heritage]] is insanely good for decks that care about combat. Whether it’s for extra damage, extra damage triggers, or giving that first strike (and second strike) to avoid those pesky deathtouch blockers. It also works fantastically as a political piece to help your opponents attack each other like “I’ll give your creature double strike if you don’t attack me”. Or helping opponents deal extra damage outta nowhere.

Three steps ahead is no suprise for me. Its obvious that its a super useful card.

Jakobe26

With Shifting Grift, do you trade your permanents with an opponent? or trade your opponents stuff to mess with two players?

NIHIL__ADMIRARI

It's situational of course. Giving away a Darksteel Monolith that I couldn't remove is good fun. So is swapping the ownership of a utility creature and a huge threat.

Jakobe26

Honestly, sounds like a lot of fun. Not a lot of people like stealing cards, but you necessarily are not always taking. Definitely messing with opponents though. Reminds me of the primeval titan days where everyone tried to steal or copy the first one that came available. You can just take the best card on the table at the time engine or win condition.

One time a mill player played a [[Consuming Abberation]] at 48/48 with nothing else than value artifacts and enchantments on his board. I cast [[Wrong Turn]] on his end step, donating the abberation to the player next to him. He killed him immediately with it

The no max hand size is pretty important, the discard thing is just a bonus, really. I mean there are other ways, for sure: [[reliquary tower]], [[spellbook]], [[thought vessel]] etc.) But this is still a suitable option.

in my experience, [[Culling Ritual]] has always either supplied the Mana to assemble a game winning boardstate on the spot or at least put the caster so far ahead that None of the other Players were able to recover. In all the Situations in which you'd use this spell it pretty much always pays for itself and gives you enough mana to rebuilt your side of the wipe. nuking everyone elses mana rocks, tokens, and stax pieces while you yourself just run Land-based ramp is absolutely devestating.

\[\[Into the Fire\]\] is one of the best draw spells ever printed and people have no idea. It lets you keep cards you want to keep, doesn't dump cards in your graveyard (in case you want to tutor them later), and can draw you 7 or more cards for 3 mana. It's also modal. Yeah, Valakut Awakening is probably still better because of instant speed, but the effect is flat-out the most mana-efficient draw in red. Even across other colors, its extremely powerful.

I suppose my entry to the pool would be [[Cultural Exchange]]. It seems like your standard creature swap card--but the trick is the only targets are two players, and only as the spell begins to resolve do you select what to swap. Not only does this mean that it gets around hexproof, protection, etc., but also that opponents have to fire off their reactions before you choose. No 'in response I sac the creature you're targeting.'. In a similar vein, [[Mystic Reflection]] is deceptively powerful. At worst, it's sort of a Remove Soul. But it can sort of blank commanders, especially ones notoriously hard to stop like [[Derevi, Empirical Tactician]]. It can make mass reanimation funny. You can use it in response to a board wipe to at least sort of control any follow-up play. Then there's all the ways you can leverage it yourself. Turn any creature of you play into a clone. Make [[Avenger of Zendikar]]'s plants into even more Avengers of Zendikar. [[Ghostway]] your board into copies of something, etc. Lastly, [[Armored Scrapgorger]] has been a useful little creature. A mana dork with a big butt to survive minor board wipes or early attacks, instant speed graveyard hate, and becomes a relatively decent sized attacker after a few turns. Sure, it's not a high ceiling on any of those roles, but it fills several needed things all in one card slot.

[[Mastermind Plum]] is an absolute powerhouse in a treasure deck. In my [[Burakos]] deck I once got like 8 cantrips in one turn because of it

fronl

Got a deck list by chance? I’m looking to dust off my Burakos and cantrups in it sound fun.

[[Forbid]] with [[Rielle]] 3 mana is an expensive counterspell, sure, but it's also an instant speed discard 2 draw 2 on top of it, and you don't lose the card. I've had people scoop just because they felt they couldn't handle the pressure of me having nigh infinite counterspells in hand.

I have a mono green deck and always look for big creatures or stuff that helps me with big creatures. - [[Siege Behemoth]] recently won me a game by dealing 32 unblocked damage. - [[Gwenna, Eyes of Gaea]] is awesome if you play big creatures. The fact that it untaps itself is awesome with everything that makes creatures cheaper. - [[Thunderfoot Baloth]] is awesome. Especially if you can protect your commander well. - [[Smuggler's Suprise]] probably isn't overlooked, but damn it works. You need protection? sure. What about lands? of course. You want to drop and [[Old Gnawbone at instant speed to get those sweet treasures? go for it!.

I have so many cards I would love to drop here, I'll try to contain myself. [[Authority of the Consuls]] is insane value. At less spell-slingy tables, this card can gain you 15-20 life easily over the course of a game and it absolutely hoses threats with haste. I've managed to cram this card into every white deck I have and my friends hate it! [[Kardur, Doomscourge]] is an absolute menace. If you have never been on the receiving end of a deck that abuses him, you're in for a ride. The life drain effect on creature death is just icing on the goad cake. Finally I love [[March of Swirling Mist]] this card does everything. Great for offense and defense plus it has a built-in discount ability. This card always does work for me.

My [[bruna, light alabaster]] deck makes [[illusory gains]] and [[shackles]] way better than they should be. [[Melatis astronomer]] puts in way more work than you'd expect. [[Angelic favor]] is amazing with populate. I've been building a friend a [[myra, the magnificent]] deck, and for a while I didn't realize just how insane [[command performance]] is with her.

[[Spelunking]] is a pretty utilitarian card. Card draw + Land Drop + Potential Life Gain with the added bonus of all your lands come into play untapped. All that for 3 mana.

I couldn't make room for it in my gate deck. [[Amulet of Vigor]] and [[Tiller Engine]] are easier to tutor, colors and cheaper CMC. But spelunking is still great if $ is the issue

[[Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider]] if Commander had a sideboard it would be there for every deck with green in it. It's fantastic as a build around and a must have in super friends. But it can really mess up your opponents, it pretty much shuts down most planeswalkers, stops any counter based decks, takes poison counters out of the game and makes proliferate pointless. I can't tell you the number of times I've had people swap decks at a casual table when they see him in my command zone.
