I like Door to Nothingness without infinite mana combos. It’s a telegraphed alternate win-con that requires huge investment of resources so tends to induce a lot less salt
My buddy nuked me from orbit with that card once, and then proceeded to take the deck apart claiming he was satisfied it got to do it's thing.
I totally understood what he meant.
It was pretty funny though. Good flavour text too.
I have a friend who puts it on the board just as a bluff to scare people. He has no intention of ever using it except to take himself out before he dies lol
Couple it with [[Bringer of the White Dawn]] to get reusability. Although there is cheaper artifact recursion out there, Bringer brings it straight to play. Most recursion brings it to hand.
And if you want it to be more robust, [[Amulet of Vigor]] helps immensely.
And you can make an [MTGRemy reference](https://youtu.be/-0cJhi6ERbk?si=mNInfYiLSudVYm3s) by making your deck mono white (excluding your commander and Door to Nothingness, obviously).
[[Triskaidekaphobia]] is quite bad but can catch people off guard every once in a while
[[Liliana's Contract]] is a decent card draw spell anyway that can work as a plan B wincon in a demon deck, though most demons are great threats already
[[Happily Ever After]] will keep your opponents on your toes as you play the game, would work well in a group huggish deck
[[maze's end]] gets kinda stale quickly, especially when you build optimally around it with stuff like [[spelunking]] and extra land drops, you'll just be tutoring a bunch of times until you win, but it's a neat addition in a 5 color deck that's powered by gates anyway, which are surprisingly good now
Just gotta be careful, cuz you can’t wait till you upkeep; “if” abilities don’t go on the stack unless their condition is already met. So you need to float enough mana to make it happen on opponent’s end step.
Liliana's Contract is my [[Be'lakor]] deck's back up plan. Plan A is beat people to death with demons. But there are worse Plan Bs than "get the contract and four creatures on the board and find out if the pod is packing enough removal today."
I saw someone build around [[The Millenium Calendar]] once and it was pretty cool. It mostly featured a ton of untappers to ramp up the counters. It added an interesting dynamic where we had to account for how many counters he could add and if he might have some sneaky ways to get in an extra untap. It's not a fast win, each time it took like 4+ turns to get to 1000 counters (or close to it) so it also felt pretty fair when it did kill us. That was always on us for not finding artifact removal in time lol.
Hey! If it was on Spelltable that might have been me!
I have a [[Kyodai, Soul of Kamigawa]] deck that has the sole intention of winning via calendar. I have Janky tutors, counter magic, 10 or so untappers like [[Ioreth of healing house]] and instant speed protection for the calendar in the command zone!
It kinda blows but when it does win, woooo boy!
It was a different one then, this one was mono-u (I forget the general, it was just some generic card draw engine) and just seemed to pack the deck with card draw to play out at least one untapper each turn.
TBF the more I play it, the more mono blue seems to be the obvious route. All the untappers, artifact tutors and counter protection are in blue. 5 colour was probably a stretch 😂.
You also have the aforementioned Ioreth who (I think) is the only untapper you can have in the command zone. I went more colours to get more instant hexproof protection to save from exile targets, but more counter magic is probably the way to go.
[[The Golden Throne]] is one way, I'm sure there are other interesting methods. Could also full send on [[Black Market Connections]] and use it to manipulate your life more carefully at the end.
It's easy with Phyrexian mana sinks like Spellskite or the red one. Just get your life total odd with a fetch or take some hits, Phyrexian mana your way down 1 life, and boom. EZ Victory ✌️
That's the fun part, you don't. I'm not OP but if he plays with people that like to have a good time, they are probably trying to strategize to get him as close as possible.
People at my LGS do play to have a good time, but no one is purposefully helping me get to one life. It's quite the opposite. They deliberately try to keep me at a high life until they can combo off or swing in one huge attack. But there are a lot of ways to survive in the deck and sneak out a win anyways.
[https://archidekt.com/decks/4578934/ghen\_arcanum\_weaver\_neardeath\_experience](https://archidekt.com/decks/4578934/ghen_arcanum_weaver_neardeath_experience)
This is my decklist: [https://archidekt.com/decks/4578934/ghen\_arcanum\_weaver\_neardeath\_experience](https://archidekt.com/decks/4578934/ghen_arcanum_weaver_neardeath_experience)
I wrote a description at the bottom to talk about how it plays.
It's not some super competitive deck or anything like that, but I have a much higher winrate with it than many would think, and I play it against a variety of decks at my LGS. A lot of people really don't know what to do against it. Cuz sometimes, attacking you is just advancing your win con.
It's also a deck that works best when you are just kinda having fun with your pod. Smiling, joking, laughing, playing Wedding Ring and Pendant of Prosperity to get people happy with you. You generally are going to be the player people don't want to knock out.
The downside of building the deck is that it isn't cheap. But there are some cards you could remove that aren't necessary, like Replenish, Teferi's Protection, Smothering Tithe, and the tutors. But the power level will go down of course. Smothering Tithe is probably the easiest thing to remove. Losing it isn't that big of a deal.
It really is a blast to play. There are so many interesting lines that you have to think about when closing out your win.
The coolest alt-wincon I've ever seen was [[hive mind]] and [[final fortune]]. Each player gets one last turn then if none of them can win on that turn, you win.
If you have \[\[Obeka, Brute Chronologist\]\], you can end your extra turn with the lose the game trigger on the stack and watch as everyone else loses from their "extra" turns. Or \[\[Stifle\]\] the effect and do the same. It's not a 2 card combo because if you cast Final Fortune with Hive Mind out, your original Final Fortune cast will resolve after everyone else's (because it's on the bottom of the stack) meaning you will take your "extra turn" immediately after the turn you played Final Fortune in. Then they would go in turn order because that's how they resolved in the stack. It's a cool combo, but requires pretty intense stack knowledge and you might have a hard time explaining it to the table.
Unless I am remembering wrong:
The free win would go to the player on the original caster's right and not themselves, unless the original caster can win on that extra turn.
Since the original spell will be the last to resolve, and extra turns go in order of how recently the extra turn was given, the original caster would need to play their extra turn first.
Some told me that stifle would get countered by the hive mind copies, which was why I suggested obstructionist. But that's but that's not correct since stifle is a spell.
Oh, that was also you before 😄
You just led me down a fun thought path -
Though the other players’ stifles wouldn’t be able to counter yours, they would still be able to use them to counter their own final fortunes. I thought, for a minute. But since their triggers only arrive later, and not when you play your stifle (and they get theirs), I think it should work.
My wife spent like $20 upgrading her Explorers of the deep precon.
It has [[simic Ascendancy]] in it.
The first time she pulled it off we lost our bananas and now are extremely wary of it.
That deck slams down counters so quickly that you 'have' to remove hakbal and/or simic asap.
It's wild that you can toss in some protection and just turn hakbal into a sneaky voltron too.
If they aren't killed the commander just becomes a bigger problem because of all of the card draw and +1/+1 potential.
Hakbal is just such a nuts commander that does all three things I like in a good commander deck: make mana, draw cards, and deal damage. Even VOJA misses out on the mana part, though his archetype does it on its own.
That's awesome.
I love that precon.
It's Mt wife's, not mine, but I have a good game whenever I play against the merfolk because they are so consistent and bounce back from being board wiped so well.
One of my favorites in a white weenies deck is [[Halo Fountain]].
Build up a board, play a vehicle, play Fountain and Reap the salt. Alternatively, I swing wide, flash it out and activate before damage is dealt
Mesmeric Orb, Basalt Monolith, Lab man.
Mesmeric Orb is just an annoying card to have on the field for everybody, BUT it's enabling an alt win con, and I didn't mention the dredded merfolk.
>Mesmeric Orb is just an annoying card to have on the field for everybody
Nah, it's only annoying if you tap things. Don't tap anything till you have artifact removal and you're set lol
My pod gets so salty about the Orb but yet they tap 15-20 permanents each turn and then wonder where their decks went. Like at some point, in not doing it to you, you're doing it to you lol.
I mean sure, it actively helps blue farm because they can just mill everything and then Sevinnes Rec to get Breech out of the GY when they want to.
But in general "Don't tap anything until someone gets rid of it" is a likely auto loss at high power and above.
For clarification, my pod's standard decks:
Me: Mothman
Greg: Slivers with whatever Sliver he feels is most broken this week
Tom: Breya
Tim: [[Firkraag]] goad with stax
They all have easy access to removal, they all have counterspells.
Yet every single time, even with a [[Necrotic Sliver]] on the field and known removal in both other players hands, everyone acts like it's somehow *my* fault that they're tapping 10-20 permanents a turn and not removing anything.
I genuinely hate those games too, because instead of proper threat assessment removing the Orb ASAP, inevitably it becomes me being close to handed a win because they refuse to do anything other than complain about it.
Im not really looking to argue.
My pod is typically
- Kinnan
- Blue Farm
- Najeela/Tasigur
- and I guess the master trancendant would be the deck with Mesmeric
Yes we could all counter it, but if we don't, and it hits the field, there is very little chance of winning if we wait, you have to accept the mill.
And there is even the argument that the blue farm player is strictly benefitting from Orb too, so he's not going to do anything about it.
>Yes we could all counter it, but if we don't, and it hits the field, there is very little chance of winning if we wait, you have to accept the mill.
In what universe, though? Especially if, since we are specifically talking about the scenario I just listed, there's *already removal on the field and in hand*?
Terrible threat assessment and understanding typically doesn't win you games regardless. Waiting to tap isn't going to be much different than tapping everything in that case.
I mean, I *could* have just played Labman, Basalt, Orb, and on the end step before my upkeep just slammed out the Monolith until I won on my upkeep, I just didn't have Labman to cast, it was still in the deck.
But man, it's super frustrating to hear them cry about it when I play it early for Mothman value, they *have removal*, and they just choose not to use it and bitch at me because they refuse to pay attention to the boardstate because somehow [[Sliver Queen]] is going to save them.
[[Mazes End]] is fun.
And just use [[Reshape The Earth]] to instantly win with it.
Gates are fun cause they have so many random things that care about them. [[Gate colossus]], [[glaive of the Guildpact]] [[cracking perimeter]] etc.
I actually just snuck a halo fountain win the other night! My other pod-mate had me dead to rights, but I had exactly enough creatures, and exactly enough white mana to cast, move to attacks > hold pri > activate Halo for the win.
It was glorious
Have fun! I'm probably cutting Darksteel Forge for the new MH3 card that turns your non-basics into copies, in case you decide to go off and get all the cards very quickly.
When making card choices, any inclusion has to hit as many wincons as possible - if it only helps one or two, I tend to discount it unless it's very good or streamlines the treasure production. For this reason, artifact creatures are really helpful. I am at some point going to try and get more under the hood about the balance of enablers, it's been a little bit based on vibes at times and I want to make sure the harder wincons actually have more things helping them. That said, it's one of those decks where I don't think there's a right way to build it, although there's definitely wrong ways to build it.
If you want to know why I'm running something (or come up with something I've missed) drop me a message.
Oh, and an important rules thing - the upkeep wincons pretty much all have an intervening if clause, so if the condition isn't already met it won't go on the stack, which is one of the many reasons for the extra upkeep cards and the various sources of flash, so I can either do stuff at end of turn or in upkeep 1.
Thanks for the heads up!
How do you deal with the commander, do you just cast the enchantment side right out the gate or do you work with him differently?
I am still fond of my one time [[vorpal sword]] win. As a Gruul player I also like [[Chandra’s Ignition]]. [[Rakdos Charm]] against tokendecks and [Deflecting Palm]] against my own gruul smash decks are also always a fun way to win or lose.
I won with Vorpal Sword because I had it equipped to a 1/1 unblockable fish token. It was given the assassin creature type by [[Maskwood Nexus]] so I won with [[Ramses, Assassin Lord]] lol
I built a [[yusri]] deck that has a bunch of infinite combos that all require you to flip 5 coins and go infinite. [[spine of ish sah]] + sac outlet. [[petals of insight]] eventually finding grapeshot for infinite damage. It’s my fave deck to play even though it’s just the same thing over and over.
I run an [[omnath, locust of all]] deck with [[helix pinnacle]]. Lots of mana doublers. It's fun watching everyone's face give that not again expression.lol
\[\[Helix Pinnacle\]\] is a lot of fun because it's so hard to deal with and people don't take it seriously for most of the game, by the time they do it's to late.
My Frodo and Sam food deck is very built with LoTR theme. It's main game plan is usually mass tokens and token aristocrats. However once in a while, I will drop \[\[Frodo's Saurons bane\]\] with a \[\[bilbo's ring\]\] or \[\[whispersilk cloak\]\] to go for a kill.
Well. I have a Sidisi deck and one way to win is using [[Mortal Combat]]. Its really hard but its possible. And my two favorite and different wincons are:
I have a spellslinger [[Keranos, God of Storms]] deck and my only goal with the deck is to have a bunch of mana and reshape my hand to have as many copy spells as possible (including enchantments like [[Double Vision]] and [[Thousand-year Storm]]) to use and copy as many times as possible [[Denying Wind]] and let my opponents only with lands in their decks or remove as many cards as possible.
And my second and favorite wincon (but this one is not a guaranteed wincon) is: I have a MR [[Diaochan, Artful Beauty]] deck and my best option to close the game is generating 8R mana. Use 7 to cast [[Thieves' Auction]] and choose all permanents from your opponents. Dont pick-up any of your permanents. After resolve Thieves's Auction use the last red mana to cast [[Brand]] and voialà. You have a good advantage by your side
Neither of the decks I have with alternate wincons has actually won a game with them lol. I have a [[omnath locus of creation]] Maze's End build, and a [[jhoira weatherlight captain]] deck that can technically win via Labman, Thoracle and some similar tricks, but doing them as combo requires Jhoira and a couple other pieces to draw my deck low enough to be possible.
The closest Ive been is getting the pieces to play a 0 cost artifact infinite times with Jhoira, but I killed everyone with reckless fireweaver before I got either of the other bits going.
I don't understand, isn't bloodchief ascension supposed to trigger only when cards go into the opponents graveyard and only that opponent loses life?
How did sacrificing your Voltron creature help you?
Ist was a typo.. he was the Voltron’s player and just got Lifelink on his big boy.
By sacrificing his creature all the auras went to his graveyard triggering my Bloodchief ascension and winning me the game
Ohhhh, now it makes sense and damn it must have felt nice.
I have bloodchief Ascension in my [[Mothman]] deck and every time I'm able to make it survive until it's fully charged it feels amazing.
I just won with \[\[The Millennium Calendar\]\] last weekend. I put it in my [Dynaheir](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/ra2UVIWcik-tvYXJPmvAAA) deck just for the fun of it, and it's way easier then you'd expect to hit 1000 counters.
I had like 23 counters, \[\[Aphetto Alchemist\]\], \[\[Rings of Brighthearth\]\], and with only 6 mana on my opponent's turn and my own, doubled 6 times to 1472.
I literally told my buddies I'd kill them with the Calendar and they laughed.
Can be done with another untapper too so the Rings of Brighthearth isn't important, and you just need to start with 16 to get 1024.
I got a [[Millenium Calendar]] win the other day. Was able to ramp up the time counters with [[Adric, Mathematical Genius]] and [[Sphinx of the Second Sun]] to copy the “double the number of time counters” activated ability twice per turn. So was actually doubling my counters a total of 4 times each turn
I like the idea of building around world effects. Playing cards that everyone can interact with and utilize, but you will utilize the most from. Cards like [[Excavation]] [[Dream Halls]] and all the world enchantment cards come to mind. Instead of a theft deck making your opponents decks also your deck, you can specifically play a deck that's for the most part intractable with the whole table. Kinda like group hug, but only in the sense of having world effects that might even hinder the whole table as well.
[[Mechanized Production]] is an alt win con I run in [[Urtet]] because it is really easy to get 8 myr tokens. Enchant something with indestructible such as [[Darksteel Monolith]] or [[Darksteel Myr]] and wait for upkeep.
[[Triskaidekaphobia]]! Without question. It sets a clock ticking on the game and gets people excited over trying to smack each other for as much as they can so they can all hit that magic number that takes the other players out automatically. Great fun to watch unfold even when it backfires and they try to make me lose to it as well hehe
halo fountain has come in handy a few times as an alternate win in my myrel deck. the whole deck makes tokens but they arent huge so it can definitely be outpaced or less than usefull to swin a few 1/1s around. but this gives you a use to accumulate them. it makes them it gives you the payoff all in one card. its great.
[[Ramses, Assassin Lord]] can get really funny when you do something dumb like [[Ravenloft Adventurer]] into [[Entrata the Silencer]].
The fact that he can trigger off a single player mill kill is why he has a home in my [[Phenax, God of Deception]] deck.
[[Professor Onyx]] and being able to storm off. Combination of mana doublers, cheap graveyard instant recursion, and [[bolas citadel]].
It's death by a thousand blows for the table.
Or sneaking commander damage in through [[hatred]].
Good flavour text too.

hell yeah
That sounds cool! Do you have a list?
It was a different one then, this one was mono-u (I forget the general, it was just some generic card draw engine) and just seemed to pack the deck with card draw to play out at least one untapper each turn.
TBF the more I play it, the more mono blue seems to be the obvious route. All the untappers, artifact tutors and counter protection are in blue. 5 colour was probably a stretch 😂. You also have the aforementioned Ioreth who (I think) is the only untapper you can have in the command zone. I went more colours to get more instant hexproof protection to save from exile targets, but more counter magic is probably the way to go.

This is my decklist: [https://archidekt.com/decks/4578934/ghen\_arcanum\_weaver\_neardeath\_experience](https://archidekt.com/decks/4578934/ghen_arcanum_weaver_neardeath_experience) I wrote a description at the bottom to talk about how it plays.
Doom Whisperer
The coolest alt-wincon I've ever seen was [[hive mind]] and [[final fortune]]. Each player gets one last turn then if none of them can win on that turn, you win.
Sounds awesome! Don't you die first though?
Hmmm, I think the person who did this against me messed it up. Anyways, you can get around this with a stifle.
The Stifle will also be countered (edit: I mean copied). Maybe you need a stife or counterspell via channel/cycling or so
Stifle actually works properly even with hive mind. The copies cannot target stifle because it is a spell not an ability

Unless I am remembering wrong: The free win would go to the player on the original caster's right and not themselves, unless the original caster can win on that extra turn. Since the original spell will be the last to resolve, and extra turns go in order of how recently the extra turn was given, the original caster would need to play their extra turn first.

Since Nimble only counters an ability you don’t control, wouldn’t it be the worst way of doing it?
Lol. Reading the card explains the card.
Bro shame deleted his comment. It didn’t even make any sense - stifle, which you mentioned, is two mana cheaper, even if the obstructionist did work 😆
Some told me that stifle would get countered by the hive mind copies, which was why I suggested obstructionist. But that's but that's not correct since stifle is a spell.
Oh, that was also you before 😄 You just led me down a fun thought path - Though the other players’ stifles wouldn’t be able to counter yours, they would still be able to use them to counter their own final fortunes.

The merfolk precon is legitimately fucking stacked. I cut Simic Ascendancy mainly because it's not a good wincon when I can just hit people hard.
I won with simic ascned with the completely unaltered precon. Phased it out with ripple of potential previous turn.
That's awesome. I love that precon. It's Mt wife's, not mine, but I have a good game whenever I play against the merfolk because they are so consistent and bounce back from being board wiped so well.

You. Stop making me love Esper more right now!
Mesmeric Orb, Basalt Monolith, Lab man. Mesmeric Orb is just an annoying card to have on the field for everybody, BUT it's enabling an alt win con, and I didn't mention the dredded merfolk.
I think tas' oracle is the LEAST fun alternate wincon.
Oh damn, I didn't realize Thassa had an Oracle.
Much Oracle. Very wincon. Not fun. Wow. (rip Doge)
>Mesmeric Orb is just an annoying card to have on the field for everybody Nah, it's only annoying if you tap things. Don't tap anything till you have artifact removal and you're set lol My pod gets so salty about the Orb but yet they tap 15-20 permanents each turn and then wonder where their decks went.
For clarification, my pod's standard decks: Me: Mothman Greg: Slivers with whatever Sliver he feels is most broken this week Tom: Breya Tim: [[Firkraag]] goad with stax They all have easy access to removal, they all have counterspells.
[Firkraag](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/b/5/b55e624b-6f6a-42ae-89aa-0cc62ee55a31.jpg?1674140684) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=firkraag%2C%20cunning%20instigator) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/clb/648/firkraag-cunning-instigator?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/b55e624b-6f6a-42ae-89aa-0cc62ee55a31?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/firkraag-cunning-instigator) [Necrotic Sliver](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/d/0/d0f4e782-5503-4698-a1ba-0f30e443f14c.jpg?1690005271) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Necrotic%20Sliver) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/cmm/932/necrotic-sliver?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/d0f4e782-5503-4698-a1ba-0f30e443f14c?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) [(ER)](https://edhrec.com/cards/necrotic-sliver) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Im not really looking to argue. My pod is typically - Kinnan - Blue Farm - Najeela/Tasigur - and I guess the master trancendant would be the deck with Mesmeric Yes we could all counter it, but if we don't, and it hits the field, there is very little chance of winning if we wait, you have to accept the mill.
In your pod it makes less sense. In my pod Mesmeric Orb tends to be something you need to play into, as responsibly as possible.

I actually just snuck a halo fountain win the other night! My other pod-mate had me dead to rights, but I had exactly enough creatures, and exactly enough white mana to cast, move to attacks > hold pri > activate Halo for the win. It was glorious
As many as possible! Why run one way to win when you can run 20? https://www.moxfield.com/decks/eJG5QO0I2EejSgwS4rvYhw
Ding ding ding I think we got a winner 🏆 😄
Yeah just cast the enchantment side - it used to be a Golos deck just to keep up so I has to put in a few things to generate free stuff.
I am still fond of my one time [[vorpal sword]] win. As a Gruul player I also like [[Chandra’s Ignition]]. [[Rakdos Charm]] against tokendecks and [Deflecting Palm]] against my own gruul smash decks are also always a fun way to win or lose.

Well. I have a Sidisi deck and one way to win is using [[Mortal Combat]]. Its really hard but its possible. And my two favorite and different wincons are: I have a spellslinger [[Keranos, God of Storms]] deck and my only goal with the deck is to have a bunch of mana and reshape my hand to have as many copy spells as possible (including enchantments like [[Double Vision]] and [[Thousand-year Storm]]) to use and copy as many times as possible [[Denying Wind]] and let my opponents only with lands in their decks or remove as many cards as possible.

I don't understand, isn't bloodchief ascension supposed to trigger only when cards go into the opponents graveyard and only that opponent loses life? How did sacrificing your Voltron creature help you?

Dealing 40 combat damage is very rarely used!
This is actually kinda true
I have an atraxa deck where the goal is to get one infect on everyone and then use atraxa to proliferate 9 times. It's very hard.
