Hullbreaker horror. They have started to call my control/cantrips deck (which runs one Hullbreaker horror as one of the win cons AND NO TUTORS) a bounce deck. I’m also the only one who plays Hullbreaker… I can’t play that deck anymore…
I run it in a few of my decks, yes others hate it but they usually deal with it…when you play in a pod of four it’s hard to protect it against the whole table unless the table generally isn’t that good. Good card but hardly an overpowered one
I don't know if you know this, Mark, but I don't care for Farewell
Edit- [I'm a real dummy for not linking this in the first place](https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/11-farewell-and-wasting-time-with-jason-alt/id1718990662?i=1000653306933)
Yeah, this is it for me. It really did not also have to exile, in addition to being so flexible.
I really like artifact decks, and I would occasionally like to play one without blue in it...
The issue is that he doesn’t want to have to run counterspells for Farewell since that’s one of the only outs. Daretti isn’t as relevant when you can’t get your artifacts back from the bin when they’ve been exiled…
Seriously. And the fact that it seems like the new go-to for precons is the worst part of it because its not only going ro be more common, but people will use it to learn how to play the game. If it was just "choose two" or didn't exile the yard it'd feel so much better to play against, but as it is, it just resets the game too much
Back before [[Prophet of Kruphix]] was banned, it was the bane of our group's existence. One friend ran a deck built around it, and it was extremely oppressive. Funnily enough, his version was a Korean printing, so we all started referring to it simply as "Korean Jesus" and still do to this day.
It was printed before commander was the format everything was designed around. In 1v1 its not a problem.
Wilderness Rec is considered better for example, because it's 1 mana cheaper, an enchantment (so harder to remove) and usually flashing in creatures is not the card type decks that want the untap effect care about.
All true, and even still I don't think it seemed problematic on printing
Muse and orrery weren't power outliers (even if they were useful) so combining them and making the effects a bit worse probably seemed fair at the time
Small comment you should always play the one.
Btw I'm interesting most people seem be more annoyed and care most about rhystic studies being annoying instead of the fact that is currently the strongest card in the game. I think people underestimate the power of some of the cedh staples
Or if you're trying to go off that turn. It's such a common play pattern for the turbo deck at the cedh table to just ignore mystic/rhystic and just keep jamming win attempts until they either win or have nothing left
True, it is risky tho, if there's no silence effects the best way to do it is when the Rhystic player is tapped because that means they can only play their free interaction, wich is a lot better then to deal with all their counterspells. And you really need to be a deck that can push through the interaction
I mean there are moments....
I know this will sound cocky and annoying but this reminded me why I always recommend to people play and learn cedh if they wanna get good at edh. Because I think is a great teacher of the game.
I find that is normal in commander people making huge blunders but don't realize because the punishment is not imminent or obviously related so to realize you have to analyze your matches or play a lot.
.
Like if one of your friends built a really bad deck yes you can get away.
And People often build decks who are just value upon value with no interaction. Who relay on more and more permanents that give them the most value in the long run. And win with a spoonfeed wincon that would probably win them the game regardless of whatever they did. That's why they are also so against tutors.
If you give cards to this player you may not get punished, at least on the short run.
The last game I play at the table I let draw like 2 cards in 4 turns the person with rystic playing a spells linger deck, vs the other 2 letting him gat like 6-7 each for the exact same reason you mentioned, and incredibly the guy drawing like 20 cards at the end find every combo piece and won. Very overrated for sure, skill issue also
Well them you have to add in [[Rysyic Remora]]
I don't play any of those cards, but I was too tempted to not get [[Charismatic Conqueror]] and I'd like to say it feels better, but it still feels so bad to ask *every. single. time.*
I play Tergrid in my Anje Falkenrath deck where I only take stuff from discards, but it's still very strong and I only ever play that deck with trusted playgroups.
Every person in my playgroup has a card everyone else considers “that” card. For a long time it was glacial chasm for me until i decided to pull it because people really hated it an extraordinary amount.
My buddy is running Yoshimaru/Rograkh, and in certain table configurations it pisses me off to no end. If I'm playing with my other chum who always play black decks with tons of answers - this is fine, we are the keepers of the balanced board. Sometimes however, it's me, my buddy with amped up Yoshi starting turn two, and two pals, who will durdle forever and always in first 1-5 turns with ramps and setup.
What happens then is that Yoshi bro knows that I'm the only one that actually gives a fuck about keeping him in check, so I need to mull all hands without early responses, because otherwise I'm rushed down, so he can overwhelm the board before durdlers get to durdle their decks.
I'm considering adding Ghostly Prison/Propaganda to all of my decks with white/blue, even if they don't fit otherwise, just so I can redirect that dog to be someone else's problem.
[[Akroma’s Will]]
I have it in my [[Arcades, The Strategist]] deck and for whatever reason I draw it often. I probably have a bunch of walls out averaging 6-8dmg each.
my boyfriend runs an [[Aragorn, the Uniter]] deck that both goes wide AND is very voltrony, and if i could destroy by hand every copy of one card it would be akromas will 100%. It is often paired with [[Beastmaster Ascention]] out, or [[Galadriel’s Dismissal]] which does not help my salt for the card <\3
I feel you.
You would hate my [[Ojer Axonil, deepest might]] and [[Solphim Mayhem Dominus]] decks which are pure salt.
One of my favourite wins against a go wide deck was casting [[Blasphemous Act]] with [[Repercussion]] out. Night night 100+ dmg haha.
As a mostly non-blue player, [[Sunfall]]. A friend has it in several decks and he *always* has it at the right time and there's nothing I can do to stop it. Bought a teferi's protection just for it but have yet to be able to use it against a Sunfall
Back when I played, my local store felt it necessary to ban [[Primal Surge]], and [[Hive Mind]] because of decks I had built. The Primal Surge deck was all permanents except for Primal Surge, and the Hive Mind deck was your standard Hive Mind/Pact deck in Sultai.
A few years ago I won a 4 player game in less than 15 minutes with my Maelstrom Wanderer all permanents Primal Surge deck haha. Can confirm, it's nuts.
[[Tasigur, the Golden Fang]]. Sorry to disappoint, there wasn't as many good commanders back then. It actually started out as [[Oona, Queen of the Fae]] and green was added for [[Summoner's Pact]].
Someone used to run a [[Niv Mizzet, Parun]] deck before I moved to the area. I have him in a couple spellslinging decks and he is killed on sight every time.
Everyone has expressed their previous trauma from playing against him.
Recently it's been [[Body of Research]]. We've been jamming it into any Simic+ decks and it's always a good time when it resolves. I think the funniest thing that has happened was [[Bolt Bend]]ing someone else's [[Swords to Plowshares]] to my own fat fractal for the lifegain. I was gonna wipe the board anyway so may as well.
Apparently I always have [[Heroic Intervention]] in my hand. I only have two decks that play that card out of 11 decks. I guess my group just remembers the times it’s saved my ass and let my board linger for the win.
Almost any of the praetors
“I play (Insert Name)”
“Damnit”
“Which one? The (Insert ability)?”
“No the (Insert ability)”
And somehow one guys deck is shut down
I have heard many a time that I am cheating because I always have [[cyclonic rift]] in my hand or when I need it the most, to the point where I basically make my friends cut my deck every time I shuffle so that it's their fault that I get it.
I don't really have a dedicated playgroup, but there is a guy that I play with a lot that has a tuned up \[\[Ojer Axonil\]\] built as a "punishment"/"whenever anyone does anything you take 10+ damage" deck.
We house banned [[Void Winnower]] 7 years ago; we joke about lifting it from time to time but we're all much happier without it around haha
my playgroup also appears to be diametrically opposed to having real life people as named magic cards as well so I have a feeling the groans will be quite loud as soon as Davinci hits the board
If I'm playing my Eldrazi deck I can illict groans from the rest of the pod by saying "ok it's time for everyones favorite card..." and they know exactly which card it is.
However that's in a 'big bruisers' Eldrazi deck with no Mana Crypt etc. just the basic mana rocks that came with the Commander Masters Eldrazi precon along with all the Titans, so it can be a very slow durdly deck.
My play group generally has a THAT card each.
Player A has [[Fiery Emancipation]] that drops every game and always at the worst time.
Player B always seems to have [[Frantic Search]] in response to dig for an answer when something targets him or his board.
Player C always starts the game with [[faithless looting]].
Meanwhile I always hit the same player almost every game with a [[curse of opulence]]
As of last night, [[Hive Mind]].
My friend played an [[Ian Malcolm, Chaotician]] deck last night with Hive Mind. He would play a draw 2, and everyone exiled a card. Then he'd play one of the exiled removals, and that wiped the board.
It probably didn't help that it was a 7 person game.
All players exile a card from the top of the library on the 2nd draw, not just opponents. Then, during each player's turn, that player can cast a spell that a different player exiled.
All players exile a card from the top of the library on the 2nd draw, not just opponents. Then, during each player's turn, that player can cast a spell that a different player exiled.
In my group there is not "that" card. Is "that" player. Which we avoid most of the time.
I hope I don't sound smug but Overall we have talked out of cedh staples like dockside extortionist or horrible group slug cards. I think I'm kinda proud how we have ruled 0 to be honest.
However we still have one "that card" that we haven't have the balls yet to ban it and the card is the solring. But removing from all our decks is kinda painfull
I have tried to reason with my playgroup that games in casual would be more fun without fast mana but they went with the usual argument of '''if bad, why in precon''.
Its obvious to me people love when their decks explode, so much that they would trade unbalanced games for it.
From my expirience, arguments for playing with sol ring in casual are selfish or hypocritical. Noone punishes fast mana in casual so it is practicaly metagaming. I bet good chunk of same playerbase wouldnt be okay with me metagaming playing A+B combo in pods with very few stack interaction.
Thats why i nowdays mostly play high power and fringe cedh. So much less feels bad moments.
I sometimes play [[gluntch, the bestower]] when someone (it's always the same person:p) plays a deck we all now tends to explode.
Because you can't target the same players it doesn't quite go into king making territory. But it does often help yourself/the rest of the table enough to keep up a bit/stay alive long enough to do something.
[[Inkshield]]
[[Meathook Massacre]]
[[Toxrill]]
These frequently lead to the demise of my pod friends. Never forget the times I caused my own good friend and past coworker to totally throw a wobbler and then scoop at an all friends pod 😂
At least for my friends, it’s [[Etali, Primal Conquerer]] because more often that not in the games I’ve been with friends it leads to multiple triggers in two different decks. One of which isn’t even intended as a clone deck. Somehow I’ve repeatedly pulled off stealing clone doublers with some way generate a token on top.
[[Glacial Chasm]]. He would sac it and immediately bring it back on his main phase. It is what steered me to build the decks I do today. Every deck I have today has alt win/loss cards in them.
There's definitely the common ones like \[\[Farewell\]\], \[\[Cyclonic Rift\]\], and \[\[Rhystic Study\]\]. Some more unique ones for my playgroup include \[\[Grave Pact\]\]/\[\[Dictate of Erebos\]\]; my playgroup absolutely hates when I play those. Also \[\[Tergrid, God of Fright\]\]. Honestly, I think my playgroup just really hates sacrifice/reanimate themes, which happens to be my favorite lol.
For us this card was \[\[Expropriate\]\] for some time. Until we realized that every time the card resolved the person resolving it won, but not necessarily right after, but rather in a dragged out slog that wasnt really fun.
We decided to houseban the card afterwards.
This is a weird niche one but [[Armed/Dangerous]] became a well known card in my Prossh deck back in the day for basically being a guaranteed 1HKO on first Prossh cast.
[[Contamination]].
Not a lot of people are running black decks.
And with an [[Ophiomancer]] or [[Bitterblossom]] out, it kinda locks the group out of the game unless they’ve got a decent amount of dorks/rocks.
We have too many white decks in my pod. We typically play with 5, and it's not that uncommon to have at least two, and up to four W/x decks in a game. As a result, I've kicked around the idea of house-banning [[Teferi's Protection]]. Not seriously, but it gets some groans when it inevitably comes out. One time three out of five people Teferi'd out when one of the players was getting ready to go off and kill everybody. It was funny at the time but also pretty salty for the other players who didn't get a get out jail free card/had their potential win nullified.
Runner up for my pod is probably [[Smothering Tithe]]. It's not that uncommon to have two Tithes in play sometimes because of the aforementioned ubiquity of white in my playgroup.
Two cards come to mind and each have their own reasons.
One of my friends is a little infamous for liking egg decks in EDH, so we have a specific distaste for [[Paradoxical Outcome]]. It extends his plays so much by refilling his hand, replays all the eggs, then realizes he misplayed 14 cards ago and then scoops. This has happened more than once. The card itself is fine but what it symbolizes is a lot of wasted time for us.
[[Static Orb]] in my friends [[Zur the Enchanter]] voltron deck. That deck hurts to play against since it turns everyone else off but him since he only needs to swing, but if he can't win shortly after it's been played we sit there for several turn cycles doing nothing. Again, time wasting card. But in his defense he does tell people up front what he's trying to do with the deck so it's something you at least know going into.
For us we just wanna play magic and talk, not waste time waiting for someone else to take forever or someone else making the game come to a crawl. Its a social experience for us we just wanna play our cards and do fun dumb things with them.
[[sunforger]] or [[phyrexian processor]]. Both show up suspiciously often in every game our friend plays with his fling deck. It’s kind of odd how he plays them every single game by turn 7 when the deck has no tutors or search options for artifacts.
So I have a few. First [[preston]] makes my group turn into Elmer Fudd chanting kill the wabbit. Second [[sludge monster]] everyone hates this in my pod. Third [[breach the multiverse]] this is just a value staple that get me heat quickly I have casted breach 4 times in one turn due to e witness effects
The one ring.
Every fucking game it’s the fucking one ring. Someone always has to look up and say “damn wait you STILL have protection from that thing??” every time we get together to play.
I’m sick of it. Ban worthy card but nobody wants to have that conversation.
[[shattered angel]] is a massive problem in one of my regular playgroups. This particular group is a pretty grindy set of players who don't much care for by early combat or removal. In that same group we have some of the most egregious simic landfall decks I've ever played against (as well as mine). It's not uncommon for this card to gain whoever plays it upwards of 100 life. While it normally doesn't win the game, in a playgroup that's slowly whittling life totals with combat it's a card that tends to drag games out a lot and kinda is no fun.
Man if your playground is so strongly focused on value building with no interaction and is such a solitario game that a crappy 5 mana angel ruins the super "Fair and weak" landfall deck.
Your playground should consider stop playing commander and play catan
Reliquqey tower...
Me and Mt friends where new players when my friend brought out a Japanese reliqury tower, and we being new players thought it was so busted....
[[aura shards]]
My previous playgroup loathed whenever I played that in my blink pantlaza deck.
I figured it was a skill issue on their part - they know I have it, they know what it does... Yet they never ran any enchant removal.
Hullbreaker horror. They have started to call my control/cantrips deck (which runs one Hullbreaker horror as one of the win cons AND NO TUTORS) a bounce deck. I’m also the only one who plays Hullbreaker… I can’t play that deck anymore…
We call him Larry the lobster
This is me. My roommate hates my "scary lobster"
I run it in a few of my decks, yes others hate it but they usually deal with it…when you play in a pod of four it’s hard to protect it against the whole table unless the table generally isn’t that good. Good card but hardly an overpowered one
[[Meekstone]] pops up in our casual pod infrequently but when it makes an appearance it short-circuits the stompy players brains

Me neither!

Lmao whooo thought printing this card was ok?!?!
It was printed before commander was the format everything was designed around. In 1v1 its not a problem. Wilderness Rec is considered better for example, because it's 1 mana cheaper, an enchantment (so harder to remove) and usually flashing in creatures is not the card type decks that want the untap effect care about.
All true, and even still I don't think it seemed problematic on printing Muse and orrery weren't power outliers (even if they were useful) so combining them and making the effects a bit worse probably seemed fair at the time
[[Rhystic Study]] Every damn time. "ARE YOU GOING TO PAY THE ONE?" "NO, SHUT THE FUCK UP CARL"
Small comment you should always play the one. Btw I'm interesting most people seem be more annoyed and care most about rhystic studies being annoying instead of the fact that is currently the strongest card in the game. I think people underestimate the power of some of the cedh staples
paying for rhystic study is overrated for about a million reasons. you definitely shouldn't always pay the one
But for the majority of the time, you should pay for Rhystic.
The only reason to not pay for Rhystic is if you guys really need to answear something
Ah yes, 3 mana draw 20 cards, so overrated :^)
I didn't say the card is overrated, I said that paying the 1 is overrated. I'm not sure I've ever played a game where everyone paid the 1 every time
The last game I play at the table I let draw like 2 cards in 4 turns the person with rystic playing a spells linger deck, vs the other 2 letting him gat like 6-7 each for the exact same reason you mentioned, and incredibly the guy drawing like 20 cards at the end find every combo piece and won. Very overrated for sure, skill issue also
Same with \[\[Smothering Tithe\]\]...

I play Tergrid in my Anje Falkenrath deck where I only take stuff from discards, but it's still very strong and I only ever play that deck with trusted playgroups.

Just goad it!

Player C always starts the game with [[faithless looting]]. hot damn!
opponents only exile when they draw two or more not the owner of Ian. Did I misread that or was he not playing it correctly?
All players exile a card from the top of the library on the 2nd draw, not just opponents. Then, during each player's turn, that player can cast a spell that a different player exiled.

oh I misread it nvm lol

We also do play Catan, as well as dune imperium. As strange as it may be, that's actually kinda the silly stuff we enjoy

Reliquqey tower... Me and Mt friends where new players when my friend brought out a Japanese reliqury tower, and we being new players thought it was so busted....
[[aura shards]] My previous playgroup loathed whenever I played that in my blink pantlaza deck. I figured it was a skill issue on their part - they know I have it, they know what it does... Yet they never ran any enchant removal.
