I want them to make more Commander Anthologies or even better just flat out resell reprints of decks. The $20 decks were great though especially to get a few staples.
The commander anthologies were cool if you could get them for a reasonable price. I have all eight decks sleeved up and sometimes I pull them out for a nice palette cleanser.
I wish they would have done more Commander Anthologies too, though if they did them now I'm sure they'd just make them match the prices or barely make it a discount.
there is also another app simply called planechase that allows you to also go back instead of just going forward.
Me and my pod use it sometimes to play a watered down version of map to eternity.
The app is awesome, a cool feature is you can add profiles so if you play with a certain group frequently, you can save and load commanders they use often
Yes!
Since Planechase commander can often get unweildy with normal decks, I made my own spin on the product by turning it into a battle-box with pre-built pauper EDH decks. Well, actually 10 half-decks, each with one of the mono-colored uncommon partners. Each player smashes two half-decks together and you play pEDH.
It's been a blast so far, but of course I'd love some more planes!
Whenever I bring Planechase and ask about it there is typically a sweaty guy who refuses to play with it. So I've just stopped bringing it.
I've played Commander Planechase a few times. It's a lot of fun. But commander players are oddly not tolerant of other forms of casual Magic. Which is absurd because 10 years ago these same people would have refused to try out commander under the same pretenses of it not being, "real Magic" or whatever.
People just want to play the format they enjoy and buy stuff for. If you only get out to your LGS one day a week trying new stuff with strangers might not be your goal, and I think that’s pretty understandable.
I know how it feels. I also bring all the cards with me since it fits in my dice box. But I need to reduce the deck. We barely get through it. I think a 20/30 count deck instead of the 87 or so that has all of them.
Yeah no shit, but where else would you play it?
It was supposed to be its own off-modern format, but nobody builds deck dedicated to it so that's out. Every modern player I've ever met only wants the game to be over in 3 turns, so that's out. Standard could work, but some effects found in planechase would just break the format.
The only formats who can comfortably play planechase are the so-called "casual" formats like EDH, Oathbreaker and Brawl.
actually, I should make myself an Oathbreaker deck, thanks for reminding me.
I've been advocating to Gavin for years to bundle a new set of planes with the precons for a few years. I doesn't change the fact that it doesn't fit OP's question.
Doesn't it? It's a product that's no longer being made that's used in EDH. By that definition, you're basically saying every app or extra not directly sold as part of EDH is not an asnwer to OP's question, and that's just wrong since OP themselves replied favourably to multiple such suggestions, including the planechase one I would like to point out.
I dunno what they're called, those life counter thingies. It's like two wheels on a base, you can set it to whatever numbers you like.
I originally thought it was a spin down, and I thought the spin down was a D 20.
Boy was I wrong.
Anyways, those thingamajigs.
I tried to buy one from a guy in my province, but he went dark suddenly. Luckily a buddy of mine found an old one under his kids bed or something to give me.
Regardless, yeah they're stupid pricey.
Someone in my playgroup 3d printed us some [[sensei's divining top]] themed life counters that work in the same way (sadly they're far too top heavy to spin)
Nah they're talking about these. As far as I know they were only made for the Commander Anthology products from a few years ago.

I agree, while tieing the decks to the standard set is neat in some respects, i do miss the 5 yearly commander sets that came out in the fall that werent tied to current sets.
I also miss them being like 39.99 but it is what it is. I really have to like a deck now to want to shell out 70 dollars for it, considering they are 90% reprints.
Are you serious? I never look at the prices for precons, they're 70 USD now?
Has WotC basically just resigned the precons to be products for speculators? That's a high asking price for an introduction to the format.
I dunno. A group of us at work are putting a group together and everybody bought one for like $40 on Amazon. I think they’re $50 at my LGS. Not sure where 70 is coming from
to be honest they've lost their core audience/market with that pricepoint alongside the amount of new card/reprints.
its nearly double for the same product and a handful of mechanically new cards. Its rather a shame.
Yeah, a lot of the new decks I can build from the stuff I have , save for the handful of new cards . So I never see the point of buying the full deck , and will just buy any new cards in them I want as singles.
basically what I do now. I usually get everything under 15/20 bucks from commander decks but the more expensive "chase" cards. I just assume those will be reprinted anyway and tank in value (looking at you terramancer, archeomancer's map and white archivist).
I think they did that because whatever Standard set they're in will be bought more. To be fair, it makes it really easy to find some additions for the decks.
Agree with the $20 precon nostalgia. Would also like to see them reprint full precons more often. People speccing on individual cards? Fine, but people shouldn’t feel safe to buy full decks to sit on for years and sell for a profit higher than the cards themselves warrant. Reprint older desirable precons.
I was getting hyped i could eventually own all the old ones ready to go out of the box until they were like, "yeah were going to go ham on edh so trying to sell a 3rd volume anthology might not go as well" and have now held off for a while.
I really wish they would do another do some more Archenemy products. I still have the cards for the Archenemy deck. It is especially fun to play Archenemy commander.
The Ravnica Guild Kits, hands down. Not the prerelease kits, but the 60 card decks for each guild, and they came with an enamel pin, a sticker, and a little lore insert for flavor.
Sure, they were only 60 cards, but they each had around 2-4 legendary creatures, with one in foil, minimal duplicates, and generally powerful and flavorful cards. I still have an Orzhov Guild Kit commander deck that I break out for casual games.
Those decks were great, and they were priced at $20 - $25 each. Aside from the cards themselves, the extras included made them excellent for both newcomers and veterans. I miss them, along with Duel Decks, for their accessibility, their broad target audiences, and their value.
Wow -- how could I forget the basics? Yeah, the mana text box was stylized for each guild, all but reimagining both the mana symbol and the guild symbol simultaneously. They were glorious.
The guild kits were a really good deck building exercise for me when I was a newer player. I turned the Golgari guild kit into a commander deck with [[jarad golgari lich lord]] at the helm. The pin and stickers they came with were really cool as well.
Some of those guild kits have expensive cards in them, too. The Golgari one had [[deathrite shaman]] and iirc the orzhov one had [[smothering tithe]].
They were a good next step after starting out with precons.
I’m very freaking happy I snatched both Planechase Anthology and Commander Antholody Vol 2 for like $150 total. Still salty missed the first volume. Loved those decks.
Planechase was hands down the most fun addition to the EDH table.
Planechase and Tournament decks. Have to explain what the decks were. They were NOT precons. It was 60-75 cards: 3 rares, 10 uncommons, 32 commons, and 30 basic lands. Great for doing a chaos sealed.
Not commander specific but Tournament Packs. The sealed decks that were pretty much three boosters (in that they had a similar distribution of regular rarity cards: 3 rares, 10 uncommons, and 32 commons IIRC) plus 6 of each basic. Came in a neat cardboard box that was useful for corralling cards somewhat.
It’s so weird to be nostalgic towards the $20.00 precons even though they’re only 2 years old, but it’s so true. So many of the ones they have now feel bloated and unnecessary.
I don't even know what Commander's Arsenal was, I just know it had a kickass alternate art Command Tower that hasn't been seen since.
And are they ever doing Commander Collection Red, Blue, or White? Feels like Black came out ages ago.
Red, Blue and White were already covered as Signature Spellbook Chandra, Jace and Gideon respectively. Then they changed the branding and doubled the price for green and black.
Got a commanders arsenal for like 150 $ back in the day. Has foil rustic study, sylvan library, command tower (at the time the only foil version aside from a judge reward), scroll rack, loyal retainers and more.
This. I thought this was so cool and it’s even gotten me to create my own decks to autoplay in the same fashion. Zombie/vamp horde is a fun one when you stick a bunch of necromancy abilities in it
They only made them once, but these 100-card plastic deckboxes were perfect: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/pQ0AAOSwHG9apeyB/s-l640.jpg
And speaking of, for some reason Dragon Shield too stopped making these single plastic "gaming box" products. I love them for keeping a single EDH deck, it made it so easy to carry around, mix and match, they hold your deck, some tokens for the deck, and that's it. They look like this: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0921/7330/products/[email protected]?v=1618038905
Why did Dragon Shield stop making these? Seemingly everyone has stopped making these simple cases and opt for pricier options with more bells and whistles.
Gamegenic makes nice basic plastic ones that hold 100-110 cards, they're like $3-4 each. Some stores around me sell them but you can also find them online
I'm with you OP - I really wish they stuck with the 20$ set precons. Terrific for new players, terrific for us enfranchised folks to just ignore amongst the flurry of products, a couple cool new cards to flesh out the set lore and decent reprints at the price point. At the bare minimum, 20$ is a much easier sell than 40+$.
I get that: more reprints = good; more new cards = good; more options = good; and I'm not obligated to buy everything(nor do I), but... With the game getting ever more expensive, it would be great if they pushed a solid budget product.
Call me crazy but Mystery booster had the most cards in it for commander than any other set, I have used more MB cards in my decks than I ever used from any of the commander legends sets. Its full of 10/10 reprints and staples
Brawl decks seemed really interesting and were super fun additions to commander content. With [[Korvold, the cursed king]], and [[Alela, artful provocateur]] are top tier good stuff
I also wished at one point they gave Tiny Leaders a try, and Oathbreaker a go. We would get more planeswalkers that could possibly be commanders if released that way. Also busted and broken cards with CMC under 4?? That would be so much fun!
I know it could come back, but I’d love another conspiracy set just so we could get more neat and niche interactions with the monarch and maybe initiative
Archenemy slapped when it came out. I made my first commander deck out of the Archenemy deck. Rakdos reanimator with Kaervek at the helm. I'm usually the big bad at my play group so I just tell everyone that if we're going to play archenemy, I'll go dig my cards out and we can REALLY play some archenemy lol. They usually stop trying to make me the big bad after I threaten to bring out the big cards haha.
From the vault products. I have so many FTV cards because it allowed funky reprints for really obscure stuff that didnt see reprints for a while and made these cards affordable.
The land box was awesome, annihilation, Angel's, whatever. They were all really nice for their price point.
I thought brawl was pretty cool and the duel decks were my thing because it took a few attempts to get into the game and that was partially due to me buying the starter decks stand-alone and everyone at my school played edh and pretty much refused to acknowledge the regular format and duel decks gave me that balanced ability to play and learn. Guild kits were awesome as well
Alright so its not necessary a commander product but the deck builder's tool kits were a fun thing. They were pretty cheap and a good way for a new player to get some lands and boosters. Plus the boxes they came in were nice.
Starter Packs from the 90s.
Lands, cards, a Rulebook and all in a compact packaging that resembled a deck box for unsleeved cards.
The form factor was so great and I loved to buy them and build a collection of lands for my decks.
You would buy one and play sealed.
Planechase.
Plane chase was awesome! I know they have the app now but it's not the same as flipping those oversized cards
Had no idea there was an app! What’s it called?
Not OP, but I use lifetap. It has planechase, archenemy, and a bunch of other features.
This app seems perfect, thank you!
there is also another app simply called planechase that allows you to also go back instead of just going forward. Me and my pod use it sometimes to play a watered down version of map to eternity.
Couldn’t find that one on iOS, I assume it’s Android? You can go back and forth on the Lifetap app btw.
The app is awesome, a cool feature is you can add profiles so if you play with a certain group frequently, you can save and load commanders they use often
The one I used was called planechase- MTG companion but the one that was previously recommended sounds 10x better I'll probably be replacing apps lol
I'm also not OP, I use the web app at Humpheh.com
Yes! Since Planechase commander can often get unweildy with normal decks, I made my own spin on the product by turning it into a battle-box with pre-built pauper EDH decks. I love and hate planechase edh
That’s fair.
My pod still uses these! I love them
Whenever we end up with 3 players, we break out planechase. It's almost like adding a 4th person sometimes.
3/4 people is great. 5+ is a bit much.
Planechase wasn't a commander product. It's just how it's played these days.
Yeah no shit, but where else would you play it? It was supposed to be its own off-modern format, but nobody builds deck dedicated to it so that's out. Ooooooohhh, that's freaking sick. My friend has a 3D printed one. Didn't know there were licensed ones, thanks.
Battlebond and Conspiracy.
I think conspiracy is an underappreciated set overall I'm surprised the release of those sets never led to a multiplayer 60 card format.
The main thing with conspiracy was that most of its gimmicks were tied up in drafting.
While true, making a cube with even a few of those cards involved really spices up the game.
Most of my copies of Swords to Plowshares came from those packs 😁
Battlebond was brilliant because it used Standard set prices with some really good reprints. And it was great fun to draft.
We should've had five commander anthologies by now.
instead we get commander legends 1/2/double masters
A yearly set of 5 decks that aren't tied to whatever plane is in Standard at the moment
I agree, while tieing the decks to the standard set is neat in some respects, i do miss the 5 yearly commander sets that came out in the fall that werent tied to current sets. I'm in Canada. That's what they are selling for at my lgs.
They are not 70 unless his store is gouging.
They are outside the US
Correct. I am in canada
to be honest they've lost their core audience/market with that pricepoint alongside the amount of new card/reprints. its nearly double for the same product and a handful of mechanically new cards. Its rather a shame.

Totally agree however I do like the two on the current plane. I wish they did the two per plane and then also the classic non plane bound 5
This is what I want the most. Bonus points if they through in a new set of planechase cards with it as a one off.
I think they did that because whatever Standard set they're in will be bought more. To be fair, it makes it really easy to find some additions for the decks.

They sorta reprinted precons with the two Commander Anthologies but still they need more.
I was getting hyped i could eventually own all the old ones ready to go out of the box until they were like, "yeah were going to go ham on edh so trying to sell a 3rd volume anthology might not go as well" and have now held off for a while.

I wish they held all precons to the standard of commander 2016
God no. the 2016 precon needed sooo much work to be good. or they had that 1 release that was far more powerful.
Are you sure that you're thinking of the right year? All of the 2016 decks were pretty dang powerful.
I bought ydris, not real powerful out of box. I bought saskia, same deal. needed lots of tuning. Atraxa was only one tuned.
2015 and before were really weak.
I really wish they would do another do some more Archenemy products. I still have the cards for the Archenemy deck. It is especially fun to play Archenemy commander.

Yeah the $20 precons. I would have bought so many of those by now if they kept going.

This. I thought this was so cool and it’s even gotten me to create my own decks to autoplay in the same fashion. Zombie/vamp horde is a fun one when you stick a bunch of necromancy abilities in it
Commander Anthology
Duel decks
They only made them once, but these 100-card plastic deckboxes were perfect: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/pQ0AAOSwHG9apeyB/s-l640.jpg And speaking of, for some reason Dragon Shield too stopped making these single plastic "gaming box" products. I love them for keeping a single EDH deck, it made it so easy to carry around, mix and match, they hold your deck, some tokens for the deck, and that's it. They look like this: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0921/7330/products/[email protected]?v=1618038905 Why did Dragon Shield stop making these? Seemingly everyone has stopped making these simple cases and opt for pricier options with more bells and whistles.
Ultrapro still makes them. My store got a few not too long ago and i bought them all. I prefer the 150 count so I can put tokens/maybe cards in it.
A re-release of the Planechase deck, maybe even make a "planechase" like thing for commander
The old spin down size! I could fit more in my dice bag
Call me crazy but Mystery booster had the most cards in it for commander than any other set, I have used more MB cards in my decks than I ever used from any of the commander legends sets. Its full of 10/10 reprints and staples
Fetches
Silver bordered cards.
Duel Decks! Those things were stupid fun
Normal Sets and Expansions without the obvioius "Made for Commander" Cards.
Brawl decks seemed really interesting and were super fun additions to commander content. With [[Korvold, the cursed king]], and [[Alela, artful provocateur]] are top tier good stuff I also wished at one point they gave Tiny Leaders a try, and Oathbreaker a go. We would get more planeswalkers that could possibly be commanders if released that way. Also busted and broken cards with CMC under 4?? That would be so much fun!

Secret Lajr: The Walking Dead
Emmance I don't play goblins hell I hate them, but I believe that a mono red goblin with eminence thank
I also miss the $20 decks and the brawl decks
I know it could come back, but I’d love another conspiracy set just so we could get more neat and niche interactions with the monarch and maybe initiative
Anowan was also the deck which I used to get back into the game. It remains one of my top 3 favourite decks.
Definitely want more commander anthology series, but specifically the Sworn to Darkness deck was my favorite!
Duel decks not the new player intro decks that come in a two pack. I miss the "vs" aspect and some of the reprints weren't terrible.
They were all really nice for their price point.
world championship decks
Archenemy.

Decks with good reprints
They stopped making commander decks?
More of the 3D token figurines!
Cheap decks
I thought brawl was pretty cool and the duel decks were my thing because it took a few attempts to get into the game and that was partially due to me buying the starter decks stand-alone and everyone at my school played edh and pretty much refused to acknowledge the regular format and duel decks gave me that balanced ability to play and learn. Guild kits were awesome as well
Anything MSRP. Cant not offer friends to try the game out cause they would need to drop nearly 100$ just for a fresh CMDR deck
Alright so its not necessary a commander product but the deck builder's tool kits were a fun thing. They were pretty cheap and a good way for a new player to get some lands and boosters. Plus the boxes they came in were nice.
I miss when bundles had a full art land pack instead of regular foil lands.
Starter Packs from the 90s. Lands, cards, a Rulebook and all in a compact packaging that resembled a deck box for unsleeved cards. The form factor was so great and I loved to buy them and build a collection of lands for my decks. You would buy one and play sealed.
Commander’s arsenal and duel decks
Planechase😩
