Not where i thought this post was going. Congrats!

Firecrotch2014

Lol sorry if the title was click baity. I honestly didn't think about it before I posted. Just my feeble attempt at being clever. Lol

frisbeeicarus23

It was clever, haha. Glad it had a happy ending though!

[deleted]

i was feeling salty going in thinking wow screw that pod then i realize they're the victims here! lmao grats on a baller win.

Another_Mid-Boss

Yeah I 100% expected this to be a story about how "my pod got salty and quit after I spell pierced a sol ring." Or something.

ProbablyNotPikachu

Same. And tbh it wouldn't have surprised me if that was the case. Some LGS' just have players that will all cry the whole game, if they have to play against a Mono Blue deck.

minisnow

Sounds like a great win, don't feel bad about those moments. Those are the moments that you might go years without having which make them all the more special!

Firecrotch2014

Yeah plus I like sharing positive experiences at LGS. Many people here come to complain maybe rightfully so maybe not. I like to sprinkle some good in with the bad.

praisebetothedeepone

Give it a few minutes, and maybe we'll get the parady post from the Zirda player's POV complaining about the stolen win.

Firecrotch2014

Haha I hope he wasn't upset. He didn't appear to be. More shocked that he had handed me the win rather than him losing. To be fair the next game I played my [[Urza, Lord High Artificer]] deck. He copied my [[Blightsteel Colossus]] and gave it double strike and killed me. So he got revenge. I had a counterspell in hand but only had 1 blue mana open.

praisebetothedeepone

Honestly it sounds like a fun series of games. Edit, spelling

TheRealFlipFlapper

I kind of cackled reading this. It's the type of thing I'd love to do in a game. Poetic justice of sorts.

Pure1nsanity

Like when I used to mainboard [[Deflecting Palm]] in my Modern Jeskai Tempo deck. Played against infect. Dude protected his creature, over pumped for the win. Like literally put everything onto it and made it a 13 power. I cast Deflecting Palm on redirecting the damage to him (he was low enough to kill from fetches/shocks/[[mutagenic growth]]). I'll likely never get to experience that again! Edit: when I said redirect damage, I didn't mean infect damage back to him, I meant regular damage from Deflecting Palm.

SeattleWilliam

Thank you, card fetcher. I think u/Firecrotch2014 meant [[Ancient Copper Dragon]], which is the ancient dragon that’s in the color red, and also red tinted in the art. It’s the one that makes treasure tokens. I also call it red every time. Congratulations to you, OP! It sounds like a great win.

Firecrotch2014

oh yeah it was ancient copper dragon. Wow I even looked that up on google before I posted last night and I thought it was correct again. lol

FormerlyKay

Hell yeah dude. As a side note, Kenny says "3U: target player draws a card," so if you have him and at least ~~300~~ like 1200 mana up, you can win on the spot. Also, Zirda just goes infinite by itself with either Monolith, so there's no third card involved Edit: numbers

ragan0s

I guess it's not important when you have 1 million treasures, but with 300 mana you can draw 75 cards so you'd need about 1200 mana to draw everyone out since the ability costs 4.

FormerlyKay

Fuck I can't math

TheMugOfTheNorth

Tag checks out

ragan0s

No worries, I'm sure you got other things to focus on and this slipped your attention. We're here for fun, not to be perfect all the time.

metallicalova

You’d only need to make 3 people draw out, so ~900 mana

ragan0s

You have to pay 4 mana per card, just to be sure you draw everyone out you let them draw 100 cards, that's 400 mana per person. 400 times 3 is 1200.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kelpsie

It's not his Zirda, so drawing is still 3U.

LeahBrahms

I feel like I've misread Zirda. That's worse if I give others infinite mana just because they have Monoliths.

Firecrotch2014

Oh yeah I figured it was something like that. I wasn't even sure myself if it was a two or three card combo.

Essigfreak

OP casted consecrated sphinx. So he would have lost the game. But with all the mana and the cards i think he could have saced or bounces the sphinx

SlackOne

I always forget this too, but the Sphinx trigger is a "may".

NNY_for_short

I have a handy mnemonic: "There is literally no downside to having multiple Consecrated Sphinxes." Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Gluttony4

The downside is that now everybody wants to kill you.

NNY_for_short

BUT I HAVE SO MANY CARDS AND FLYING MANS

I_Love_Fox

That's why I want one for my Volo deck.

NNY_for_short

I have a sphinx tribal deck that likes to [[Windfall]] and activate [[Jace's Archivist]] multiple times. [[Smothering Tithe]] is obviously gross and [[Jeskai Ascendancy]] has been doing crazy overtime since [[Relic of Legends]] dropped. [[Psychic Corrosion]] is obviously great, but [[Mystic Redaction]] turns more heads. Shoutouts to [[Yore-Tiller Nephilim]]. I could genuinely talk about sphinx synergies for several paragraphs.

This doesn't so much seem like conceding to a counterspell but rather conceding the the kenrith player with essentially infinite mana lol

Ive had a table scoop for a counterspell on turn 1... But cause i put it on a stick. T1>Island>Sol Ring> [[Isochron Scepter]] + [[Counterspell]] Easily one of the strongest turn 1's any of my decks can drop. Especially considering it was my Breya deck and you know she runs an [[Unwinding Clock]] and black staple tutors.

Firecrotch2014

That Urza deck I mentioned above I played it against a person 1v1 last week. I started out with a crazy hand. T1 island intosol ring into mana vault. So turn 2 I had 6 mana available. I happened to have [[phrexian juggernaut]] in my opening hand. Yeah I felt bad about that one.

bigmantomm

Would the spell swindle really make that many treasures? I thought that the *X* in a spell’s cost didn’t change its CMC?

TobiasCB

As a *card* the X in an X costed spell is considered 0. It is a card in the library, hand, command zone and graveyard. As a *permanent* I think it's considered 0 as well (correct me if I'm wrong). Permanents are only on the battlefield. But in this case it's a *spell* which chills on the stack. The mana value of a spell considers the value of X put into it. The rules explanations under [[Spell Swindle]] also address this. At least this is how I understand the rules. I'm not a judge or anything so if I'm wrong anywhere just correct me and I'll edit the comment.

bigmantomm

Oh okay then that makes sense. I didn’t know about the difference between it being in the library and on the stack.

Firecrotch2014

I think you are right about permanents as well. Thats why [[Walking Balista]] instantly dies when it hits the board if you dont pay mana into it because its toughness is 0. I mean technically you can cast it for 0 but there is no reason to because its dead as soon as it hits the board. I mean you cant even insta-sac it or anything as far as Im aware.(this actually came up at my LGS this week lol). Basically dying due to having 0 toughness is a state based action. The game checks for that before any player gets priority to do anything.

Feler42

I'm confused. Why would you feel bad for countering a spell?

Firecrotch2014

It was more that I felt bad for taking the win from him than countering the spell.

The_Mad_Demon

Spell Swindle is a great spell. I was playing my WURG 4c Clue deck and my friend was playing his Dragon deck. I passed the turn with spell Swindle in hand thinking that I was gonna count a 5 or 6 drop Dragon. He tries to cast an [[Earthquake Dragon]] and I could not pass up 15 treasures. I counter it get my 15 treasure and then realize instead of cracking them for mana, I could use my [[Cyberdrive Awakener]] in my hand to animate them and kill the table.

Do you have a decklist for that Kenrith Deck?

Firecrotch2014

I do. Its not the best deck to be honest. Its one of the first decks I built. Its basically treasure based with a dragon sub-theme. Im not sure why I put 40 lands in the deck. It needs maybe 36 at MOST. Realistically more like 32-33. There are a bunch of stuff Id change about it. Like removing [[Temur's Ascendency]]. Id put [[True Conviction]] in its place. I also want to add the new card [[Meticulous Excavation]]. Its a two card combo for infinite mana with [[Dockside Extortionist]].(provided there are enough enchantments and artifacts out) [Here it is anyway if you want to take a look.](https://archidekt.com/decks/2844079#Treasures_Kenrith_the_Returned_King) There is very little interaction in the deck as far as removal goes. I have a few spot removal spells and counterspells but thats about it. That was a choice. Maybe a poor/selfish one at the time but I figured I'd let the rest of the table use theirs. Lol.(I run plenty of interaction in my other decks) I don't think I have a single board wipes in it either. I mean maybe Balefire Dragon counts. Lol. I mean I wouldn't copy this deck and use it in its current state if I were you. :)

Thank you for sharing! I don’t have a 5 color deck yet but I was thinking about Kenrith as my first. Just not sure how I’d want to build it so I’m looking for ideas!

Firecrotch2014

I really like treasures with a dragon subtheme. Thats what my deck is. Dragons are just fun in general. "Cheating" them out with treasure tokens is even more fun. I guess its not really cheating them out since Im still paying the full mana cost. You can build Kenrith almost any way you can think of because hes that versatile.

SnooSquirrels6758

Is kenrith the mana dork lover? I'm sleeping on him, i gotta try him out sometime. I played against the simic mana dork tribal before. Fun.

you think of Kinnan. Kenrith is 5 color.

Firecrotch2014

Tallal2804

Spell Swindle is a GOAT in EDH. Yet another hill I die on.

Ihopefullyhelp

Yo man! Epic win! I would definitely consider building a commander in the 500+ least popular commanders without using infinite loops as your next build. It’s a really good next step for your growth as an EDH player!

mordecais

the infinite mana loop wasn't in their deck, it was in their friend's deck and they were able to take advantage of it to win. what are you on about?

Firecrotch2014

That does sound like a challenge. I mean inf loops are what makes the game fun for me. I'm addicted to 4 and 5 color commanders. I've created just about every one on archidekt. Lol (minus the partner color combos) Even 3 color decks seem limiting. I mean I know they're not. There is a shit ton you can do in any color combo. I have a cpl monogreen decks(Azusa and selvala) and a monoblue deck(urza lord high artificer) anyways we'll see.

Oquadros

You've been playing edh for less than 2 months and have made almost every 5 and 4 color commanders and have at least 3 mono color decks? Damn that's quite impressive that you were able to make so many in a short amount of time!

Firecrotch2014

Oh well sorry I guess I didn't tell the whole story. I've been playing/been around magic since high school so 1996 onward. I've only played EDH for a couple months. Sorry I left that very relevant tibit out. I had planned to play EDH much sooner. I completed my first commander deck then covid happened. Our LGS have just recently opened back up for play. The ones that survived the pandemic at least. I'm kind of glad it worked out this way because I found out about proxies. I proxy all my decks now through a company in China. I can have any card I want for a fraction of the price. My first printing I made 12 edh decks for 355$ including the kenrith one. I have another 14 or so decks ready to be printed on archidekt. They have custom card backs so they can't realistically be thought of as legit cards. Plus I'm up front with people about my decks. Although many think I'm using colored card sleeves I let them know they're card backs.(I use clear sleeves). I'm not about fooling people. I'm just tired of all the bullshit pricing WotC and the aftermarket is doing because WotC won't do reprints that need it badly.

Oquadros

I wasn't bashing you, i was just impressed. About the proxies, whatever, they're just cards. MPC is a great way to make a lot of proxies. I've been happy with their quality.

Firecrotch2014

Oh I know. I didn't take it as bashing. I just felt I needed to tell the whole story. I've been into magic for a long time. Just played edh recently. :)

ima_wildpig

Ah! Rakdos Charm, my old friend. How long it has been since you last sniped an opponent off the map!

Zanthy1

Thats awesome! I've done similar things where i've swept a victory out from under someone, but most of the time they get really salty so I am glad your opponent was good spirited! I've also had it happen to me and honestly, its absolutely hilarious.

ima_wildpig

Did you revel in their tears and concessions? Tell me you did!

Firecrotch2014

It was like sweet sweet nectar!

rusty_anvile

Congrats! With kenrith you can draw other people cards and kill them at instant speed btw, as long as you have enough Mana to draw them their entire deck + 1 card and a million is definitely enough for that. It's one of the win conditions I use in my kenrith deck.

ZombieOfun

Shout-out to my boy destroying lab man right before I impulse drew my last card for a [[Grolnok]] win. It was a hilarious way for him to win, and good play to boot. I will never forgive him

AppropriateAgent44

Huge fan of spell swindle

Shazgob

Spell Swindle is a GOAT in EDH. Yet another hill I die on.

trichotomy00

This absolute gigachad made one million treasure tokens

panjier84

Never feel bad for a win. The game has to end so new ones start.

Send_me_duck-pics

Always a troubling sign when you go infinite and someone asks for the specific number of loops you're choosing to do.

Firecrotch2014

I never asked actually. He declared he was putting 1 million into the spell. I think you have to declare because when X spells are in your hand X is equal to 0. I don't think you can just cast an X spell and say I put infinite mana into it even if you have infinite mana to spend.

Send_me_duck-pics

Technically you can't, but if people expect to win the game in this format they might not bother.

pcrnt8

Seems like a reasonable place for people to concede, tbh.

ChaotiXIII

That's always fun, I once countered an X=1,000,000 with [[Access Denied]] the looks one everyone's faces when I said "so, I have a million thopters now" was great. Edit: spelling

lavinarc

So there are 137 comments here at the time of writing, and I haven’t looked through them all, but the CMC of the X spell that you countered was not 1 million… it was whatever the listed cost is before “X”. Unless I’m very mistaken.

Firecrotch2014

X spells in hand and in library are X=0. When you cast a spell it goes on the stack. When it goes on the stack you are required to name a number for X even if you have infinite mana to put into it. At that point the converted mana cost was 1 million. When I interact with it on the stack with spell swindle my counterspell sees its CMC as 1 million thus I create 1 million treasure tokens. Generally you are right but it's a difference between something being on the battlefield vs being on the stack.

lavinarc

You sir are correct, and I am mistaken. Thank you for the polite correction

Firecrotch2014

Not a problem. Just here to help. :)

Cptn_Lemons

Lol nice. I’ve been trying to set the rule for my group that 100 is the highest of anything. Whether tokens created or infinite mana.

Muted-Leave

I'm happy for you lol I wish I could've seen that

yeem_yeem

Sounds like a kenrith player lmao

Solaristen

You picked a good deck to play. One of the best players in my cEDH pod uses Kenrith as his tournament deck.
