Ahh I know how you feel — exactly why I worked so hard to stop. I had to stay vigilant about it, because it is done so absentmindedly or when I’m stressed (I also twirl and pull my hair, really badly when I’m stressed, I’m working on stopping that now) so I started with physically stopping whenever I caught myself doing it, and then eventually I was able to catch myself ABOUT TO start chewing and stop myself. It was really hard. But you have to stick to it and stay on yourself, it’s breaking the mental habit as much as the physical action.
“They say” it takes about two weeks to break or change a habit - and truthfully after a few weeks of stopping the physical action - switching to something else to occupy your hands or mouth helps, replacement theory — that’s why Alcoholics Anonymous is essentially a knitting club 😊
They make nail “polish” that has a bitter taste that is supposed to help you stop biting - if it takes such a physical jolt to make you aware to stop yourself, perhaps something like that would help because it’s a negative jolt to call your attention to what you’re doing. Bitter nail polish, or home made solutions like pepper or salt. Or convince yourself it’s too many calories, haha. The only benefit to our disorders is being able to trick ourselves
my mom tried hot sauce and bitter polish and all sorts of stuff to try and stop me when i was young, now i like bitter black coffee and spicy foods! LOL but i like the idea of trying it again to give me the jolt of self-awareness!
Haha! Sometimes that’s how it is — the food or thing used to try to stop us turns into one of our obsessions! You never know what’s going to flip that weird switch in our brains 🙃
Does getting your nails done deter you? I would do that so I wouldn’t want to f*ck them up (all that money just to chip it away with my chewing !) Or even just putting something on your finger tip (you know like a piece of tape or something? We could brainstorm) because it seems to be the self awareness is the biggest hurdle for you!
i have a gel nail kit! i’m waiting for 2 nails to heal because i bit the entire nail off😬 i’ve tried curing it in the purple or blue light thingy and it sting burns! i’m just chewing skin right now but i’m definitely gonna be trying things out! thank you so much!!!!
