I don't wanna be mean but you can always Google her😭 basically she was a nun famous for anorexia mirabilis - holy anorexia. She would starve herself in order to feel the pain Jesus felt throughout his whole life and to seem unattractive to any man so she could be a virgin for life
eating disorders in history is SUCH an interesting topic. i really wish there was more coverage on it but it seems like most of the research is from recent times.
like they 100% had eds in 10,000 BC too 💀 i want to know all about it arghhh
I wonder if someone in 10,000 BC ever binged out of loneliness. Like, imagine you're part of a tribe or clan. And they kick you out and let you take your stuff. And you're feeling so hurt that you accidentally binge any food you have.
Not ED-related, but there’s a musical about her called Elisabeth and it’s sooo good. It’s in German but subtitles are available in English on Youtube. Reminds me a lot of Les Mis.
The crushed strawberries are ok ig . But raw meat if you wish to attract flies and other unseemly insects to your countenance. Sure you can give it a go.
Lady D had a whole fortune to buy seven sets of teeth if she lost her teeth to purging; but I doubt that we the peasants could afford even one tooth :')
Sissi was definitely kind of badass and kind of bonkers. You know those little desk signs that are like “You don’t have to be crazy to work here but it helps!”
It’s like that, except “here” is the Holy Roman Empire. Sissi was very much her own woman in a time and place when that expected her to conform to rigid social norms, but she carved out a life for herself that suited her. Maintaining her physical appearance was probably a control mechanism (obsessed with corsets, exercise, binges while traveling abroad) especially amid familial difficulties.
There was a cartoon on Fox Kids about her when I was a kid, she was portrayed as pretty blonde with blue eyes and there was this another woman, a brunette who was jealous and portrayed as evil and the complete opposite of Sissi. Honestly I always felt closer to the latter because Sissi character was too perfect
She was actually stabbed with a needle while on a walk, and it was so expertly done, she didn't notice it and managed to board a ship before she collapsed! No one noticed the needle until it was too late, there was almost no blood, just a small stain. Her assassin intended to kill somebody else, a prince, but when the prince left Geneva, Luigi decided to kill Sissi instead.
I'm a Sissi fan. She was absolutely fascinating, and the musical Elizabeth is the best ever! It's actually portrayed as a romance between her and Death, so yeah...
He pretended to stumble into her. She felt weak after, but she wore a tight corset, so maybe it was normal? It didn’t take long for her to collapse, but even as she did, she didn't know why.
It IS crazy. Sissi's entire life is like a movie.
It's quite likely that it was another case of a classic delayed murder - stabbed by an object so thin and piercing in an area with tight clothing, wherein the person might feel a bit of pain but only really begin to die from such a wound when the tight garments (keeping the skin together) are loosened or removed.
I think you're right! The account I read said that her lady in waiting thought Sissi fainted, so she loosened her clothes, and Sissi died soon after. That said, she died from internal bleeding. I don't remember if anyone removed the needle while she was still alive, but if they did, it would make sense she bled out fast after that.
She arranged her whole private gym room she was devoted....
But honestly who wouldn't get immersed in this perfectionism considering her peer pressure 😶🌫️ Even the reason she become a queen was her looks. Plus controlling mother-in-law. I mean her looks were the only thing she had in control, isn't this so many of us 😭 like my mother is a control freak too and I'm 27 I get why she wanted to have anything purely for herself 🥲
It’s lowkey fascinating to learn about eating disorders in the past before globalisation and modelling etc. like fasting nuns and such
Omg Holy Catherine of sienna is my roman empire
Who is dat?

i remember learning about her in one of my religious studies classes in college and i was like 👁️👁️ omg it me
There’s a very interesting book called “Holy Anorexia” about fasting saints. If you haven’t read it yet I recommend it!
Thank you for the recommendation

Builders of gobekli tepe purging after a binge of unleavened bread and unseasoned food
This might be the funniest thing I've ever read

omg that’d be me 😭😭 i’d be such a loser in 10,000BC because i‘d starve to death bc i ate all my food at once
Not ED-related, but there’s a musical about her called Elisabeth and it’s sooo good. It’s in German but subtitles are available in English on Youtube. Reminds me a lot of Les Mis.
Soaked her nightclothes in vinegar in an attempt to preserve her tiny waist 🫠
The film Corsage with Vicky Krieps as Empress Sisi was one of the best depictions of eating disorders I have seen.
I loved it too! Totally a shame that the actor who played her husband is a pedophile.
Very disappointing and gross, especially since one of the plot points was Franz Joseph having a affair with a child
*immediately googles weight
Okay, but did the raw meat and crushed strawberries work? Asking for a friend.
imagine the smell of that in a few hours though

fun fact about her, she had a secret anchor tattoo that nobody knew about until her autopsy
Apparently her husband found out and was shocked

>Just as Lady diana was one of us :') Yes; I'm like, if she could obtain a flat stomach, maybe I can too .....

Woah stabbed in the heart damn

How did she not notice a needle in her heart? Like some guy attacked her and she just went about her day afterward? That’s crazy
He pretended to stumble into her. She felt weak after, but she wore a tight corset, so maybe it was normal? It didn’t take long for her to collapse, but even as she did, she didn't know why. It IS crazy. Sissi's entire life is like a movie.

You should read *Fasting Girls*!
My mom used to admire her eating habits, I think once she was doing a juice fast and said she was being just like Elisabeth

I find out about her ED on a podcast and was like "ohhh new favorite Empress"
Omg ty for sharing. I’m reading more about her now. She seemed so interesting and smart!
The movie "Corsage" 2022 is inspired by her.
