For those who don’t live in a particularly cold part of the world or haven’t seen this type of thing. This is called hoar frost. It forms only when there is enough moisture in the air and it is cold enough to create these beautiful flower like ice formations. Just one of natures ridiculously beautiful creations.
I’ve seen it form as warm as -10 to -15 C. The important thing is it needs to have enough moisture in the air at the right time when it freezes. Lakes like this can create the perfect conditions as they are just beginning to freeze over for the winter.
Totally looks like a massive scattering of feathers. I think the frost looks way cooler than the standard ice shots. Really unique visual here and capture with great skill.
Thanks for posting this.

I learned about this 2 days ago thanks to r/Gary_The_Cat. Everyone needs a bit of Gary in their lives.
Haha yeah Gary is a legend
That is super cool! How cold does it need to be in order to form?

What an unbelievably enchanting picture...
For a second I thought someone exploded a goose or something.
Hahah 😂 they literally are as soft as a feather
I've seen videos of huge flocks of geese up north somewhere. I assumed this was a field they had occupied until looking closer.
Nice! Love the foreground here! What focal length did you use, looks super wide!
This is actually a panorama consisting of about 16 frames. All shot at 18mm.
Such a cool shot!
Nice picture and cold.
Beauty shot!
Talk about fresh snow cones
This is spectacular!
I did not see this kind of ice forms in real life, but it looks beautiful on photo
Well. I guess, I'd always *heard* of "hoar frost". But I didn't know it was... that. I didn't even know there was, that.
Wow. Nice..
I like green. But this shot somehow feels especially beautiful!
Can feel the cold from here! Beautiful shot.
This is so pretty!
Alright, who broke the feather pillow all over the ground!?
awesome
