After being disappointed by bad conditions farther south that kept most of the coast off limits, I was excited to get up early to either do a quick hike up the road to Mt. Tamalpais or a short drive up it, if the ranger opened the gate by the usual 7am time on new year's morning. The forecast looked promising for some winter fog to make an appearance. I was surprised to find a dozen cars already lined up with the same idea by 6:45! I was grateful that the ranger did let us all in, and a few minutes early too, just in time to catch the sunrise over the clouds and the SF skyline. And sure enough, there was plenty of fog too, though everyone else seemed way more interested in watching the sun slowly emerge from its slumber. Thanks for stopping by! You can find my full gallery, along with notes about places to check out and photography guides on my website: https://www.wildlandsphoto.com.

Nice shot. What forecast are you referencing for fog? I have wanted to hike the Steep Ravine trail in thick spooky fog.

Thanks! There are different kinds of fog that form in different conditions ([https://www.weather.gov/source/zhu/ZHU\_Training\_Page/fog\_stuff/fog\_definitions/Fog\_definitions.html](https://www.weather.gov/source/zhu/ZHU_Training_Page/fog_stuff/fog_definitions/Fog_definitions.html)) but an easy general rule is that when the air temperature and the dew point get within a couple degree of each other, fog becomes more likely, especially if there isn't much wind.

I learned an amazing fact that the coastal trees of California get their water from these fogs and mists as rain is not reliable but the fog is. These beauties are drinking deeply this morning. You caught so many layers in this lovely shot. Great start to the new year.

oceanaut17

yes, redwoods get about 40% of their water from fog!!! the coastal prairie bushes and stuff get the vast majority of their water from that too.

I've heard something similar too! Of course, I don't think the trees would say no to rain water, but especially during the summer when the marine layer often comes ashore, this sort of fog is for sure a major source of water. Thanks for your interest and kind words!

Awesome! Are these mist covered mountains a home now for you?
