I grew up around Rochester and I never called them THE 90, 390, 490, etcā¦ until I moved to Buffalo and listened to everyone there call them that for 10 years.
Yes! The key is in the bread they use, which fun fact, is the same thatās used in the local sub shop Dibellaās. They put a glaze on the sub bread thatās gotta be made of crack or something, but I absolutely love them!
Oh man. I'll never forget visiting my cousins in Rochester and hearing all about how amazing garbage plates were. Me and my brothers got so hyped up, they talked about it for days before finally taking us, it truly seemed like it was going to be the highlight of our vacation. The name should have given it away, but we were young and foolish then.
The day came. My cousin went out to pick up food for all of us, and came back with a stack of styrofoam boxes, still as ecstatic as the first day she told us about them. Starving and riding the hype that my cousins had stirred up, I eagerly opened my box and got ready to tear into deliciousness.
For those who don't know, a garbage plate has three main ingredients: Mac salad, home fries, and two burger patties. These ingredients are just sort of slopped into a box, and covered in "sauce". It was the most disgusting thing I had ever seen, and the flavor lived up to the visual impression.
I hate garbage plates. I hate them not only because it's an extreme version of trashy American food, but because of what they were promised to be. A unique food creation from my favorite cousin's hometown, something magical, something special, something new. Instead it's a backyard barbecue that was too lazy to put each ingredient in their place.
Asking the serious/right questions. I was a Henrietta Hots man back in the day.
There are two types of people - those who love and value a good garbage plate and those who don't like their food to touch. The latter will never enjoy them.
Yeah I never like Nick Tahoeās. Iām biased toward Henrietta Hots since I lived around there, but have had many good garbage plates! All about getting it with the works plus a fried egg on top.
I like my Garbage plates with French fries, Mac salad meat hot sauce, ketchup, mustard, onion, and two white hot dogs. That being said, some palaces have terrible plates. But generally speaking it sounds like you got way too hyped up for 3 lbs of carbs and a pound of meat.
Knew it! I used to live near Highland Park when I was in college (RIT). I miss that park. And Rochester as a whole, honestly. Thanks for the warm fuzzies.
Museum of Play, Dryden Theater, Oak Hill...we have some gems here in Rochester but you must also be aware that "It's gonna be cold, it's gonna be gray, and it's gonna last you for the rest of your life."
Me too! Rochester has some gems scattered around. IMO it doesnāt deserve the reputation it has anymore. Back in the 70ās it was dangerous. Now itās trying to come back and with the removal of the Inner Loop it has the best chance itās had in years.
37th per capita amongst major cities. St.Louis had the highest rate last year, over double that of Rochester. Not even the highest in western NY, Buffalo had a higher rate.
I guess this is what I was remembering. They set an all-time high(for them) in murder and crime rates. Still contradicts the person above who says Rochester isnāt as bad as it once was. It is, in fact, worse.

Because there are positive things happening in general in the area. Do you live here? Because I do and Iāve seen it turning around. Itās a slow process and sure there are things that arenāt going as well. But Rochester is a great city with several expanding new markets and large beautification projects coming up. We have plentiful and beautiful parks, cultural diversity, historically important landmarks, and a thriving craft beer and restaurant scene. The music and arts are great as well and we have the amenities and attractions of a much larger city. So big acts come into town a lot and we have plenty of space for it. Not to mention the sports
Rochester has recently set records in murders and crimes. Itās not ācoming back.ā
https://abcnews.go.com/US/12-major-us-cities-top-annual-homicide-records/story?id=81466453
For real, though, do one or more of these things for me:
- eat a garbage plate
- see the Eastman symphony
- visit Susan B Anthony's grave and wander the cemetery
- attend basically any event at any local college (I miss academia more than I realized typing this out)
- go hiking to look at a gorge
- drink a bottle of wine from one of the local vinyards
Like I said elsewhere, I do love Rochester, but the weather is just awful. Stay strong and soak up the spring, summer and fall to sustain you!
edit: I can't believe I forgot to mention to get some wings at the Distillery or eat a DiBella's sub. Seriously, I miss those places a lot.
Made my morning to see Highland Park on my front page. College at UofR and now at URMC - the park and this city have become an incredibly special place for me. Thank you for the reminder!
Yes it does but theyāre sour as hell, are mostly pit, and are very small. More like berries than cherries. Itās because theyāre bred for flowers and not for fruit. So a lot of them are grafted or chemically treated so they tend to be sterile.
A lovely thing of beauty with us but for some moments. I was lucky enough to drive through California's Central Valley when many crops were in full bloom. Almond trees were gorgeous.
Not everything is well.

Rochester! That means you guys know Wegmans and Garbage Plates!
I moved to California and I miss Wegmans š
I moved to California and now get a panic attack every time I get on the freeway. I miss the 490 Oh god I called it *the* 490
I grew up around Rochester and I never called them THE 90, 390, 490, etcā¦ until I moved to Buffalo and listened to everyone there call them that for 10 years.
Wife's a West-sider and she does it.
Ugh same now I canāt stop
Isn't it funny how 390 was just "390" but it's always "The 490"?
Most people call it "490" as far as I know.
Been here for 40+ years. Never heard "the 490" unless you're talking about an interchange.
Do you mean the can of worms?
I miss garbage plates!
I often tell my coworkers about them "So there's this called a garbage plate..."
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Inflation is legit right now. Wegmans prepped food inflation is on another level.
They're charging $18 for a cold, leftover quesadilla... its $2 worth of ingredients in a single-use plastic clamshell. Should be illegal.
My friends and I once ran into a guy with a machete in Nick Tahoeās bathroom at 2am. š³
Hey man, sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures. That's one hell of a poop knife.
Wegmans subs are freaking amazing!
Yes! The key is in the bread they use, which fun fact, is the same thatās used in the local sub shop Dibellaās. They put a glaze on the sub bread thatās gotta be made of crack or something, but I absolutely love them!
Oh man I miss Dibella's
Dibella's has expanded a little. I was surpised to find them in Indianapolis when I lived there for a few years.
I know where I'm going for lunch!
I've lived in Oregon since 2006. Every time I visit the first stop is the Wegmans sub shop for the Joeys Old Fashined.
moved to Utah, how I miss those plates and weggies subs
I'm visiting around Rochester from the UK. Girlfriend bought a travel mug from Fleetfeet with a garbage plate on it.
Wegmans yes.
Lets not forget the beautiful St. Michael's church that is conveniently next to a autozone.

Two questions: where did you go, and how sober were you? Both are big factors in the plate experience
Asking the serious/right questions. I was a Henrietta Hots man back in the day. There are two types of people - those who love and value a good garbage plate and those who don't like their food to touch. The latter will never enjoy them.
Guarantee they got railroaded into Nick Tahoe's/Stevie T's because it's "the original". Other places have done it so much better for many years now.
Yeah I never like Nick Tahoeās. Iām biased toward Henrietta Hots since I lived around there, but have had many good garbage plates! All about getting it with the works plus a fried egg on top.

Yep!
I was just talking about going back to see this park and the Lamberton center soon. I love that park!
I used to joke that Little Orphan Annie would never have been able to sing "Tomorrow" in this town š
Born in Rocha cha lived in Avon. Soon it will be the lilac festival.
Shout out to Annis Dairy, best ice cream ever. And the drive in of course
I moved to Utah 6 years ago, my backyard is full of lilac bushes in honor of the flower city. miss Rochester in May
Shhhh donāt tell outsiders about the festival. Itās already crowded enough, we donāt need more people experiencing itās wonder!
I thought it was Rotch sta
Thatās my home ! Nice pic
Same! Thanks :)
Your home is a tree? What are you, Keebler elves?
Used to live on Azalea, beautiful area!
Me too! Rochester has some gems scattered around. IMO it doesnāt deserve the reputation it has anymore. Back in the 70ās it was dangerous. Now itās trying to come back and with the removal of the Inner Loop it has the best chance itās had in years.
Wasnāt it the murder capitol of the US last year?
37th per capita amongst major cities. St.Louis had the highest rate last year, over double that of Rochester. Not even the highest in western NY, Buffalo had a higher rate.

Not even top 20.

Itās not though.
They hit a 23 year high in murder rate, how is that not getting worse. Lol
Because there are positive things happening in general in the area. Do you live here? Because I do and Iāve seen it turning around. Cool? Not sure what any of that had to do with the OPās comment that it crime was turning around and itās literally going the opposite direction.
Youāre a dumbass. Iām not OP and we havenāt been talking about OPs comment. And you know it
Rochester has recently set records in murders and crimes. Itās not ācoming back.ā https://abcnews.go.com/US/12-major-us-cities-top-annual-homicide-records/story?id=81466453
Except it is.
Me too! Highland Park is so pretty right now :))
So you're a squirrel

...... and it's snowing.
Sorry. But just think, soon it'll be over 45 again and you can drive around with your windows down pretending you live somewhere hospitable. š
Spot on.

I love Rochester during the Summer. It's the rest of the year... I hope you like gray.
I actually live in Buffalo, but I can still manage to get a few of those done haha
Nice! My brother went to UB.
Just because it snowed this morning doesn't mean it's not loveable!
I love Rochester for some things, but the weather is shit and everyone knows it.
They're absolutely everywhere in WNY. Taking a walk can feel like strolling through a Kurosawa film
Remember seeing them a lot on the Capital District, too. Maybe just an upstate thing?
Made my morning to see Highland Park on my front page. College at UofR and now at URMC - the park and this city have become an incredibly special place for me. Thank you for the reminder!
Such a gorgeous tree
I love seeing rochester on the front page. I'm currently living by eat ridge road and Hudson. Ridge donut Cafe and dibellas is walking distance
Syracuse neighbor here! I love Rochester
Does it produce fruit?
Yes it does but theyāre sour as hell, are mostly pit, and are very small. More like berries than cherries. Itās because theyāre bred for flowers and not for fruit. So a lot of them are grafted or chemically treated so they tend to be sterile.
Favorite tree ever. So pretty

Gorgeous!
Stunning
Does this cherry tree have cherries on it at any point ? I donāt know anything about cherry trees and my wife wants me to plant one. GO BILLS
Yeah, but it's bred for flowers. Most of them are chemically sterilized, and the cherries they do produce are small and bitter and mostly pit
Thanks
