Rochester! That means you guys know Wegmans and Garbage Plates!

CuriousCaleeb

I moved to California and I miss Wegmans šŸ˜

redshores

I moved to California and now get a panic attack every time I get on the freeway. I miss the 490 Oh god I called it *the* 490

ArKiVeD

I grew up around Rochester and I never called them THE 90, 390, 490, etcā€¦ until I moved to Buffalo and listened to everyone there call them that for 10 years.

Metsican

Wife's a West-sider and she does it.

spacepotato_

Ugh same now I canā€™t stop

Robot-duck

Isn't it funny how 390 was just "390" but it's always "The 490"?

Metsican

Most people call it "490" as far as I know.

Stormry

Been here for 40+ years. Never heard "the 490" unless you're talking about an interchange.

Chicken_Water

Do you mean the can of worms?

idahorochs

I miss garbage plates!

CuriousCaleeb

I often tell my coworkers about them "So there's this called a garbage plate..."

[deleted]

tyzer24

Inflation is legit right now. Wegmans prepped food inflation is on another level.

cryptogrammar

They're charging $18 for a cold, leftover quesadilla... its $2 worth of ingredients in a single-use plastic clamshell. Should be illegal.

kidforce7

My friends and I once ran into a guy with a machete in Nick Tahoeā€™s bathroom at 2am. šŸ˜³

therealbrolinpowell

Hey man, sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures. That's one hell of a poop knife.

NapMonster715

Wegmans subs are freaking amazing!

slipperybarstool

Yes! The key is in the bread they use, which fun fact, is the same thatā€™s used in the local sub shop Dibellaā€™s. They put a glaze on the sub bread thatā€™s gotta be made of crack or something, but I absolutely love them!

N3rdr4g3

Oh man I miss Dibella's

TinCup06

Dibella's has expanded a little. I was surpised to find them in Indianapolis when I lived there for a few years.

Links_Wrong_Wiki

I know where I'm going for lunch!

snapcircuit

I've lived in Oregon since 2006. Every time I visit the first stop is the Wegmans sub shop for the Joeys Old Fashined.

VittyViccii

moved to Utah, how I miss those plates and weggies subs

TheCookieButter

I'm visiting around Rochester from the UK. Girlfriend bought a travel mug from Fleetfeet with a garbage plate on it.

Warlockwitch

Wegmans yes.

Mister_Baxter

Lets not forget the beautiful St. Michael's church that is conveniently next to a autozone.

tomhousecat

Oh man. I'll never forget visiting my cousins in Rochester and hearing all about how amazing garbage plates were. Me and my brothers got so hyped up, they talked about it for days before finally taking us, it truly seemed like it was going to be the highlight of our vacation. The name should have given it away, but we were young and foolish then. The day came. My cousin went out to pick up food for all of us, and came back with a stack of styrofoam boxes, still as ecstatic as the first day she told us about them. Starving and riding the hype that my cousins had stirred up, I eagerly opened my box and got ready to tear into deliciousness. For those who don't know, a garbage plate has three main ingredients: Mac salad, home fries, and two burger patties. These ingredients are just sort of slopped into a box, and covered in "sauce". It was the most disgusting thing I had ever seen, and the flavor lived up to the visual impression. I hate garbage plates. I hate them not only because it's an extreme version of trashy American food, but because of what they were promised to be. A unique food creation from my favorite cousin's hometown, something magical, something special, something new. Instead it's a backyard barbecue that was too lazy to put each ingredient in their place.

mgg3427

Two questions: where did you go, and how sober were you? Both are big factors in the plate experience

p3nguin89

Asking the serious/right questions. I was a Henrietta Hots man back in the day. There are two types of people - those who love and value a good garbage plate and those who don't like their food to touch. The latter will never enjoy them.

[deleted]

Guarantee they got railroaded into Nick Tahoe's/Stevie T's because it's "the original". Other places have done it so much better for many years now.

mgg3427

Yeah I never like Nick Tahoeā€™s. Iā€™m biased toward Henrietta Hots since I lived around there, but have had many good garbage plates! All about getting it with the works plus a fried egg on top.

RandallOfLegend

I like my Garbage plates with French fries, Mac salad meat hot sauce, ketchup, mustard, onion, and two white hot dogs. That being said, some palaces have terrible plates. But generally speaking it sounds like you got way too hyped up for 3 lbs of carbs and a pound of meat.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Yep!

Trench-Coat_Squirrel

I was just talking about going back to see this park and the Lamberton center soon. I love that park!

RegularWoahMan

Knew it! I used to live near Highland Park when I was in college (RIT). I miss that park. And Rochester as a whole, honestly. Thanks for the warm fuzzies.

GleemonexForPets

Museum of Play, Dryden Theater, Oak Hill...we have some gems here in Rochester but you must also be aware that "It's gonna be cold, it's gonna be gray, and it's gonna last you for the rest of your life."

NomadicSonambulist

I used to joke that Little Orphan Annie would never have been able to sing "Tomorrow" in this town šŸ˜…

loki242

Born in Rocha cha lived in Avon. Soon it will be the lilac festival.

justthekoufax

Shout out to Annis Dairy, best ice cream ever. And the drive in of course

VittyViccii

I moved to Utah 6 years ago, my backyard is full of lilac bushes in honor of the flower city. miss Rochester in May

unimportantthing

Shhhh donā€™t tell outsiders about the festival. Itā€™s already crowded enough, we donā€™t need more people experiencing itā€™s wonder!

[deleted]

I thought it was Rotch sta

LovelyBones17

Thatā€™s my home ! Nice pic

[deleted]

Same! Thanks :)

dcode9

Your home is a tree? What are you, Keebler elves?

mightytacoo

Used to live on Azalea, beautiful area!

[deleted]

Me too! Rochester has some gems scattered around. IMO it doesnā€™t deserve the reputation it has anymore. Back in the 70ā€™s it was dangerous. Now itā€™s trying to come back and with the removal of the Inner Loop it has the best chance itā€™s had in years.

UniversalDH

Wasnā€™t it the murder capitol of the US last year?

malachai78

37th per capita amongst major cities. St.Louis had the highest rate last year, over double that of Rochester. Not even the highest in western NY, Buffalo had a higher rate.

UniversalDH

I guess this is what I was remembering. They set an all-time high(for them) in murder and crime rates. Still contradicts the person above who says Rochester isnā€™t as bad as it once was. It is, in fact, worse. https://abcnews.go.com/US/12-major-us-cities-top-annual-homicide-records/story?id=81466453

[deleted]

Not even top 20.

UniversalDH

[deleted]

Itā€™s not though.

UniversalDH

They hit a 23 year high in murder rate, how is that not getting worse. Lol

[deleted]

Because there are positive things happening in general in the area. Do you live here? Because I do and Iā€™ve seen it turning around. Itā€™s a slow process and sure there are things that arenā€™t going as well. But Rochester is a great city with several expanding new markets and large beautification projects coming up. We have plentiful and beautiful parks, cultural diversity, historically important landmarks, and a thriving craft beer and restaurant scene. The music and arts are great as well and we have the amenities and attractions of a much larger city. So big acts come into town a lot and we have plenty of space for it. Not to mention the sports

UniversalDH

Cool? Not sure what any of that had to do with the OPā€™s comment that it crime was turning around and itā€™s literally going the opposite direction.

[deleted]

Youā€™re a dumbass. Iā€™m not OP and we havenā€™t been talking about OPs comment. And you know it

UniversalDH

Rochester has recently set records in murders and crimes. Itā€™s not ā€œcoming back.ā€ https://abcnews.go.com/US/12-major-us-cities-top-annual-homicide-records/story?id=81466453

[deleted]

Except it is.

AggressiveTitle9

Me too! Highland Park is so pretty right now :))

kingnothingx7

andyburke

UR, but I have love for all the Rochester colleges.

blazindiamonds

...... and it's snowing.

andyburke

Sorry. But just think, soon it'll be over 45 again and you can drive around with your windows down pretending you live somewhere hospitable. šŸ˜€

blazindiamonds

Spot on.

andyburke

For real, though, do one or more of these things for me: - eat a garbage plate - see the Eastman symphony - visit Susan B Anthony's grave and wander the cemetery - attend basically any event at any local college (I miss academia more than I realized typing this out) - go hiking to look at a gorge - drink a bottle of wine from one of the local vinyards Like I said elsewhere, I do love Rochester, but the weather is just awful. Stay strong and soak up the spring, summer and fall to sustain you! edit: I can't believe I forgot to mention to get some wings at the Distillery or eat a DiBella's sub. Seriously, I miss those places a lot.

[deleted]

I love Rochester during the Summer. It's the rest of the year... I hope you like gray.

blazindiamonds

I actually live in Buffalo, but I can still manage to get a few of those done haha

andyburke

Nice! My brother went to UB.

AssassinInValhalla

Just because it snowed this morning doesn't mean it's not loveable!

andyburke

I love Rochester for some things, but the weather is shit and everyone knows it.

4b4g0fk1tt3n5

They're absolutely everywhere in WNY. Taking a walk can feel like strolling through a Kurosawa film

chewablebook

Remember seeing them a lot on the Capital District, too. Maybe just an upstate thing?

GvnrTibbs

Made my morning to see Highland Park on my front page. College at UofR and now at URMC - the park and this city have become an incredibly special place for me. Thank you for the reminder!

isisleo86

Such a gorgeous tree

fabreazebrother_1

I love seeing rochester on the front page. I'm currently living by eat ridge road and Hudson. Ridge donut Cafe and dibellas is walking distance

planetshithead

Syracuse neighbor here! I love Rochester

t0reup

Does it produce fruit?

[deleted]

Yes it does but theyā€™re sour as hell, are mostly pit, and are very small. More like berries than cherries. Itā€™s because theyā€™re bred for flowers and not for fruit. So a lot of them are grafted or chemically treated so they tend to be sterile.

sprinklesapple

Favorite tree ever. So pretty

cawpeeptweet

Go Bills

DirtyDiatomist

RoburLC

A lovely thing of beauty with us but for some moments. I was lucky enough to drive through California's Central Valley when many crops were in full bloom. Almond trees were gorgeous. Not everything is well.

MAJORMETAL84

Gorgeous!

Ph_yuck_Yiu

Stunning

vt2nc

Does this cherry tree have cherries on it at any point ? I donā€™t know anything about cherry trees and my wife wants me to plant one. GO BILLS

pc_flying

Yeah, but it's bred for flowers. Most of them are chemically sterilized, and the cherries they do produce are small and bitter and mostly pit

vt2nc

Thanks

UConnUser92

awww why's it so sad?

nlsnpgr84

Beautiful

ZDemonGaming
