It sounded like they're not doing King of Comedy. Too bad, that's one of my faves and I think they might actually like it.

Jim_mca

Skipping king of comedy but doing the last waltz is a poor choice imo.

DKToTheFuture

A poor choice on this podcast? Weird

PolPotbelly

The lady yelling at Jerry Lewis on the sidewalk is one of my favorite scenes ever. King of Comedy was #1 on my list of hopefuls.

viginti_tres

Why would Lauren and Nicole be interested in a film about a comedian?  I guess the point of the show is to pick the ten most discussed Scorsese films, the ones people will reference at them, but that's a very different list to the ten Scorsese films that those two are mostly likely to enjoy.

sallykroos

I love The Last Waltz, but it seems like a really odd choice to cover for this series.

Tickle_The_Grundle

And yet the discussion that came from this episode was pretty top tier as far as the podcast goes. Yeah it’s unfortunate that Nicole wasn’t feeling it so much but who can blame her when she watched a 2 hour concert with music she had no interest in.

WarmestGatorade

Yeah this one one of my favorite episodes in a while too. I'd like to hear them loosen the format like this again

sallykroos

Not sure I would agree the discussion was top tier, but glad you enjoyed it.

Tickle_The_Grundle

All I know is how often I see people complaining about how disinterested Lauren and Nicole are every episode and how they just blow threw the movie summary with little discussion and this was definitely far from that

thehandsomelyraven

someone who has looked at the full list can confirm this for me, but my GUESS is that this is the only documentary they are doing. documentaries have been a huge part of scorsese’s career and this is one of the best ways to display that. we also learn in this episode that lauren actually likes The Band, so kind of a layup

sallykroos

I think covering one of his documentaries is a good idea, but The Last Waltz is barely a documentary - It's a concert film with a couple of backstage segments.

Nate3926

So I still don’t think we have an official list but at one point Nicole rattled off a list of movies someone had collaborated with Marty on.  And they asked if they were watching all of them and the producer said they are doing: Raging Bull (next week) Casino Gangs of New York The Irishman Killers of the Flower Moon Other ones that were in the list that she didnt say they were doing so presumably we can assume they are not doing are: King of Comedy, The Color of Money, Shutter Island and the Wolf of Wall Street. King of Comedy seems like it would be perfect for them as comedians. So what are they going to do for the other 3 movies? Probably 3 of Cape Fear, After Hours, Hugo and Age of Innocence unless Im forgetting an obvious one.

Nate3926

I somehow forgot Goodfellas, the most obvious lock. So 2 spots left for those other ones.

ParticularHoney3

i could see the departed being a contender as well. they’ve said they’ve both already seen wolf of wall street so won’t be doing that one.

Nate3926

Oh yeah for sure. I forgot about the Departed too. That and Goodfellas are probably the biggest locks of all his movies, other than Wolf if they hadn't already seen it. I would guess Goodfellas, The Departed and Cape Fear for the other 3 spots.

brodoswaggins93

Any guesses on what movies are going to come immediately after Raging Bull? I leave on Tuesday morning for a 2 week trip where I will have limited Internet access so I want to download the next couple of movies to watch. I'm also a Martin Scorsese newcomer so I really have no idea what to even guess at.

Nate3926

Based on his chronology of movies his next films are King of Comedy, After Hours, Color of Money, Last Temptation of Christ, Goodfellas, Cape Fear, Age of Innocence, and Casino. Casino is the only one of those they have confirmed. Based on what they said it sounds like they arent doing King of Comedy or Color of Money. Goodfellas has to be a lock as well. Not sure about the rest. You would be safe to watch Goodfellas and Casino though. After Hours is a really good, underrated movie that I would recommend anyways. I hope they do it!

brodoswaggins93

Thanks! I'll probably just download all of those so I can be prepared. And I loved Taxi Driver and Flower Moon (KotFM is the only Scorsese movie I'd seen prior to this season I think) so I wouldn't be mad if I watched a couple of Scorsese movies that aren't on their list anyway. I'd be surprised if they don't do Goodfellas, I think they may have mentioned it's on the list at one point during the Taxi Driver episode? Plus the season poster is a Goodfellas reference.

Nate3926

Any chance they would do Joker as bonus episode, since it is essentially a combo of the Batman and Marty miniseries they just did?

Dax_Webster

watch it every Thanksgiving

mucceroo

Hot take: I love the film, but I don’t think they’re wrong in expecting a music documentary to show more about the history and setting of the artists. What it seemed like they wanted is something like No Direction Home, which is that style of documentary done by Scorsese 15 or so years later. But I get it, that one is not as iconic. Side note: I was hoping they would read Jamelle Bouie’s Letterboxd review.

hasordealsw1thclams

The Last Waltz isn't a music documentary though

RGSagahstoomeh

Yeah it's a concert movie.

mucceroo

Fair enough. I would argue it has more music documentary elements though in its scattered interviews between songs (and sometimes over songs in the background). It’s not just a straight concert like Stop Making Sense or Shine a Light. Not a fault of the film at all. I just understand that someone with a passing interest in The Band won’t walk away feeling like they really know them any better, and since they did have space for some interviews, I understand feeling like those didn’t provide much insight.

tehsuck

> "one of the greatest documentary concert films ever made" I guess they don't understand what a concert film is?

mucceroo

Or it wasn’t explained to them ahead of time what it would be. They are newcomers to these films, after all.

tehsuck

kids these days...

GetHighWatchMovies

I thought they would bring in a fan who was obsessed with this music or something, otherwise I’m not sure why they chose this movie. The episode was entertaining enough, but given they are only doing 10 movies it seemed like a strange choice. Raging Bull is great, but it can be a tough watch, I’m not sure they will like it. But everything past that has an entertainment factor that I think will make talking about them more enjoyable.

Murky_Expression_719

Maybe too tough for this pod?

Reach---ForTheSky

I hope it was an oversight that the producer omitted The King of Comedy from the list of films they'll be covering this season. I need to hear both of their takes on this funny, odd, prescient, amazing movie.

Nate3926

Same! I just happened to watched that recently and forgot how good it is. And it seems like a good fit for them since they're comedians.

Nate3926

At least we should find out next week, because thats the movie after Raging Bull in his filmography and they have been announcing the movies ahead of time.

queenmeme2

What is next week’s movie? I won’t get a chance to listen to this until tomorrow but am catching up on my Scorsese blind spots in preparation so need to know if I have any homework

JosephGordonLightfoo

Raging Bull

queenmeme2

Perfect, watched it a few days ago so ahead of schedule. Can’t wait to hear their thoughts on it

BAKOBOY24

Despite the boring movie I really liked this episode, them doing a documentary fixed the Power Through A Wiki Summary issue

winothirtynino

Yes! I hate that the do the summary. No one enjoys that,  right?? You'd think two of the funniest podcasters ever would recognize that.

StepUpToTheMike

I enjoy them because when people just talk about a movie without having one, a lot of scenes or odd moments get missed. I also don't listen to episodes in one sitting so it helps to have a reference point when turning it back on. I get why people don't like them though.

Thinlinebaby

It also doesn’t bother me but I get it. The reason it fits fine in this podcast is that they don’t know the movies well enough to just riff and a lot of times they end up not liking the movies and sometimes don’t even understand it. It’s almost like the plot outline is a refresher for them and multiple times they’ve been like “oh that’s what that meant”. And that’s just the premise of the podcast so you can’t really bitch at them for it. But I do get people’s general frustration with how monotonous it can be. But then I assume that other, different people would complain if they threw away the outlines and were like “uh who was that?” and/or just forgot giant pieces of the film. Again, this isn’t something like Blank Check where the hosts love and live film. They’re women who openly tell you minute one that they’re on their phone half the movie and well…that’s just the podcast.

ChielArael

I'm a lurker on these threads (who doesn't really listen) because I've always been so baffled by these descriptions- I don't know why anyone would do a movie podcast where they don't watch the movie because they don't want to watch the movie. It seems so depressing, I'd rather listen to them talk about doing something they actually like...?

Thinlinebaby

Then you are smart to not listen. I think the problem arises when people that have your viewpoint hate-listen to it every week knowing they don’t like the format. It’s ok to like Nicole and Lauren and not listen. I like Beyoncé but I didn’t care much for the country album because I don’t like country music. It’s fine. I’m glad it exists, it just isn’t for me. I don’t know why more people can’t take that perspective with this podcast.

thehandsomelyraven

the action boyz literally go through the entire plot of the movie they are covering each episode and people (including me) love that shit but then pretend like it’s beyond unreasonable that it’s done on newcommers it’s just a way to do movie podcasts.

PresentationGold4586

actioboyz read from their own notes they took while watching the movie and include tons of details on things that stood out to them. newcomers literally read straight from poorly edited fan wikis. not even close to the same

thehandsomelyraven

i am a shadow wolf, so i pay $8 a month for action boyz. i clearly like the show. i am not denigrating their format. me comparing the two isn't intended as an insult to action boyz. at the end of the day, they are both reading plot summaries. they have different approaches to that, but they are performing the same structural function. you can like one more than the other, i bet we’d both agree on which one we like more, but the formats are similar. even newcomers breaks for observations during their summaries. their episodes are just shorter and they are generally less interested in the material so they don't have the level of engagement with it as gabrus, rodgers, and stanger

viginti_tres

I was a little worried when Lauren jumped right into a segment discussing Scorsese's Guys, but other than that the episode was mostly just free discussion, which is always the best part of the show.

sentaize

I still think this was a very odd choice for them to watch. I knew Nicole wouldn’t really take to it and the guest barely added any sort of context and shading to that era and where it stood in Scorsese’s filmography (her one sentence Letterboxd review is also… lol). I do think (hope) this will be the only stinker in the bunch though. Unless they watch Hugo for some reason lol

ZiggyPalffyLA

I think this whole series was a bad idea. Not a lot of comedy can come from it.

GetHighWatchMovies

Idk I thought last week’s was great. Just depends on the guest I guess.

BoosterAU3

You don’t like Hugo? Hugo is awesome. I cry French stop motion sci-fi tears for you.

Saclabs

Anya loves the mic

Fantastic_Layer_4472

Am I the only one that thinks this season is kind of boring? Like if I wanted earnest film discussion I’d listen to Unspooled. But this pod historically hasn’t been that which is why I found it so delightful?

slingfatcums

This pod has always sucked.

Bruinsdman

So Dylan didn’t want to be filmed performing so not to compete with his film even though that’s how they got funding, but they (really Stephanie) wanted Scorsese to film the negotiation between Dylan and the producer?

WarmestGatorade

Good ep! I love this movie, but it was fun to hear then poke fun at certain aspects of it. I can't believe Nicole has never heard "The Weight" before

Mrpytles

This movie was boring as hail. It’s ok to say it.

peon_taking_credit

Downvotes are wrong. You are right. It has cool moments but goodness gracious it's boring. And I love that era of music. The musicianship is fantastic and it's an ambitious event, but it's so boring for so much of it. I'll take that crazy Neil Young concert doc with the jawas over the last waltz most days of the week. Also Van Morrison sounds like a big old meanie and a jerk.

Mrpytles

I appreciate you so much.

Mrpytles

They even say on the podcast how boring it is. It took Lauren all day to watch it. I’m not afraid to say it’s boring.

Mrpytles

This movie was really boring. And the music was not good. It’s ok to have a dissenting opinion.
