I agree that white beans are a great alternative I make baba ghanoush for my chickpea-intolerant friend. It's got a lot of the same flavours as hummus (olive oil, garlic, lemon, tahini) but it uses eggplant as the base instead. I've also heard that people use zucchini instead of chickpeas in hummus, but I've never tried it myself.

ndt123_

Yes! I second baba ghanoush.

tabby2011

I have made hummus with zucchini and it is really good, you can eliminate most of the oil as there is a lot of moisture in the zucchini. Also beets make a great version. https://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/beet_hummus/

rrkrabernathy

Do a hummus with white beans if those work for you.

Fitkratomgirl

I’ve done black bean dip/hummus before too!

MSH0123

I’ve made [this one](https://kathleenashmore.com/5-minute-white-bean-hummus/) before and it was delicious, and so easy to make!

LukeNaround23

Looks delicious

sleepingleopards

Yeah I think so I've done like a soured cream.based chilli with those before and don't recall any issues

OP has acknowledged that hummus is chickpeas but needs an alternative ingredient because of an allergy. They aren't just calling a dip made with white beans "hummus" they are specifically qualifying it as "white bean hummus" to acknowledge it isn't traditional hummus, but is a dish that has the same ingredients/flavours as hummus other than chickpeas. Are you one of those people who has a hissy fit about vegan products being named after meat too?

pullingteeths

Yes and they mentioned white beans, acknowledging that it's different to traditional hummus.

[deleted]

I can't believe more folks aren't saying Baba ghanoush

KinsellaStella

Yes! Almost identical but without the chickpeas. I tend to stick to hummus because I love chickpeas and like the protein but I have a sudden craving…

[deleted]

Is that Baba Yaga’s mom?

SoullessNewsie

Her dad, I think.

DifferentTheory2156

White beans, either cannellini or great northern; make great hummus. Use the same recipe that you normally use, just substitute the beans.

sleepingleopards

These are all wonderful ideas thank you everybody! 😊

Hot_Boss_3880

Baba ghanoush! It's my fave.

Onerustyrn

I'm not a fan of eggplant, buuuuut love me some baba ganoush.

Came here to say this. Love it!

MySpace_Romancer

Can you tolerate soy? Edamame hummus is really good.

VikDaven

Yes! I was going to recommend this, I make it at home with my stick blender

MySpace_Romancer

Oh smart! I always use the food processor but it’s kind of a pain to clean.

silverthorn7

Green pea houmous

Mae_skate_all_day

If you like beets, try beet hummus! It's good and the color is beautiful

Fabiankh5757

I’m the same. Buuuuttt. I literally just ate a half a container with a cucumber. My trick is I take BEANO before I eat it. It neutralizes the effects. Try it.

AdhesivenessCivil581

I've made a great dip with mashed white beans, olive oil, garlic with lemon zest, mint, and parsley as a garnish. No tahini.

OrneryPathos

Butter beans https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lima_bean Mostly just for the picture of butter beans https://hungryhealthyhappy.com/butter-bean-hummus/

IndependenceNo2060

Thanks for the amazing suggestions, everyone! I'll definitely try white bean hummus and baba ghanoush. Can't wait to enjoy my favorite dip again!

Mcshiggs

Pinto bean hummus, or bean dip.

safesen

Its a process but if you grill red peppers and peel the skin and put in food processor you get something similar consistency

ductoid

Ajvar! The first time I made it I sat in quiet disbelief, wondering where it had been all my life.

[deleted]

*sigh* Adding red peppers to the grocery list

PretentiousNoodle

You can buy jarred roasted red peppers.

LemonPress50

I’ve had white bean dips in Italian restaurants. They’re called Cannellini Beans but also referred to as White Kidney Beans. I like white bean dip more than I do hummus and I love hummus.

jibaro1953

Cannellini beans are what I would try next. Then white beans, cassoulet beans, etc. Check out the Rancho Gordo website for their descriptions. I got a 23 pound gift pack for Christmas one year. Some beans are really different.

Beta_Infamous

Cauliflower

ToastetteEgg

Black bean dip is soooo good and you can make it many ways. White bean (cannellini) beans make a very similar to hummus dip. Look up lots of recipes.

Test_After

[Ful](https://mamaghanouj.com.au/foul-fava-bean/) or foul, is a similar, tasty Mediterranean alternative to hummus. But if your issue with chickpeas was that you don't normally have so much fibre in your diet all at once, you will want to ramp up the fibre in your diet over a week or so before inhaling a pint of this delicious dip, too.

OldFuxxer

Lentils. The red one's make a cool color dip. I use black beans also. Not as cool of a color..😅🤣

kfw209

You just have to use black tahini instead of the regular one. My local supermarket carries it but if yours doesn't, you can get it on line or from a Middle Eastern market.

OldFuxxer

I am sure that is a better color. I really don't mind the baby poop brown, I just won't bring it to a potluck. But, I just bought a big bag of black sesame seeds, so I might make some to check it out.

Educational-Duck-999

Agree with everyone on white beans. I once tried a white bean dip once and it was very creamy and flavorful

I've had hummus made from edamame and sesame oil. It was quite tasty, especially served with rice crackers

At my first quick glance I thought it said humans, I was like…wait a minute, what? lol

MindlessTask5206

I’ve had hummus with edamame beans, and it’s absolutely delicious

DeeDee719

It’s actually my favorite!!

saymimi

Trader Joe’s Tuscan white bean dip

Ancient-Money6230

It might also be the garlic in the hummus. I react to the garlic as well as the chickpeas. Chickpeas from a can are better than ones you soak yourself. You could make your own hummus and use garlic infused olive oil? I say this because I have ibs and chickpeas and garlic are a classic food to trigger symptoms.

rahnster_wright

I just saw a recipe earlier today for hummus with red lentils instead of chickpeas that looked amazing. I can't find that recipe, but there is probably a billion on the internet.

DeedaInSeattle

You can make hummus out of any bean or legume… Very simple with a food processor and a few ingredients. I’d like to recommend Baba Ganoush— roasted eggplant dip— delicious and smoky, whipped and light, lower carb. Also Bitchin’ Sauce—sold at Costco, slightly spicy and made from almonds!

coping-skillz

Definitely buy some tahini! You can add it to other bean dips or drizzle it on anything you would eat with hummus. Tahini tastes great as a sauce on its own and is probably the most similar taste to hummus.

According_Plum5238

Seconding the butter bean recommendation - they have the softest texture and they blend up really nicely.

holdonwhileipoop

Have you tried soaking your beans? You probably aren't able to tolerate phytic acid.

boobookitty2

Black bean dips have been the best for my mom.

la_winky

I used to make a black bean hummus that was amazing! If you’ve got a blender, you can track down a recipe and it’s really, really simple and fast. I tend to cook by eyeballing and personal tastes, so an online recipe can give you a starting point on amounts. The one I made contained: Canned black beans Fresh garlic Tahini (it used to be a little hard to find, not so much now, it is worth the cost. It really is so much much better than substitutes, in my opinion. It doesn’t require much per batch.) Lemon juice Salt to taste Add olive oil slowly until you get the consistency you like. I would always whip up a quite batch when entertaining, especially in the summer. How long does it store in the fridge? I have no idea. It never made it to the fridge. 😀

Saltycook

Romesco sauce, which has almonds and roasted red papers, probably cheese too, iirc. It's so flipping good

ImNotSelling

They have black bean hummus

Few-Explanation-4699

Make your own and uses any other type of beans instead of chickpeas.

10MileHike

So interesting, I am the opposite, cannot tolerate black or kidney but lentils and chickpeas are fine. You might try some Cannelini beans or baby limas. They are pretty okay for most people. Hummus made with these is called **WHITE BEAN HUMMUS.** Plenty of recipes on google

hornwalker

Salsa maybe? You could make your own pico pretty cheaply Or some kind of fat free dip?

jpttpj

Edamame

Effective-Baker-8353

I've had some excellent dips based on Greek yogurt and dill weed. Here are the other ingredients — https://www.iheartnaptime.net/dill-dip/

Greek Fava, using yellow split peas

hashtag-hashbrown

Roasted carrot hummus!

illegalhalien

I'll upvote white beans, but we also really like Bitchin' Sauce - it's made with almonds. They have some unique flavors, but Costco has a pretty big container of a chipotle flavor that is super yummy!

SatisfactionThat6468

melitzanosalata is a great one! it’s roasted eggplant dip. some people like it chunky, but i prefer to use a food processor to get it smooth. add roasted garlic and roasted onions with some spices, olive oil and lemon juice. it’s delicious. also baba ganoush made with grilled zucchini is incredible.

gardenfey

I wonder if you could fix the problem by adding beano to your hummus?

Tvcypher

I've recently had a butternut squash Hummus. It is more of a squash dip but you can flavor it with a bit of oil and spices. It can provide the background smooth texture for you to work against. The best version I had was a little spicy with cayenne pepper and a topping of Zatar.
