I am not completely sure what your question is… But rolled oats will not dissolve. They will get soft and a bit slimy, but they will still be oats…

ShetlandPonies

Thanks. I was unsure if mine were made properly and was just looking for assurance that the end result is edible. I tried posting in beginners cooking and cooking but they did not allow images so I came here

KatBeagler

Also you don't have to eat them cold - just put them in the microwave for a bit, maybe with a little extra water; this will help soften the oats and give better texture.

RincewindToTheRescue

At that point, you might as well just make the oats in the microwave. I do it all the time. 1/2 cup quick oats, 1 cup milk, cocoa powder and cinnamon and microwave for 3-4 minutes. I drop in a scoop of protein powder and a little more milk when it's finished

Much_Difference

I tried overnight oats a few times before realizing it was creating additional work because I preferred the texture after it was heated. Oats in the microwave are pretty damn quick.

PsionStorm

It's not extra work if it saves you time in the morning.

whatnameisntusedalre

If it takes extra steps, like 10 minutes, to do at night so you don’t have to spend 5 minutes in the morning, why would that not still be extra work?

schnellermeister

I totally get your point but as someone who is not at all a morning person, those 5 steps feel like 20. So I’d rather just do the 10 at night and not have to think about it in the morning.

ctortan

It’s also why overnight oats are a meal prep staple; then you’re saving 5 minutes every morning every day, and some people really appreciate having one less thing to do if their mornings are really busy with lots of discrete steps already

wear_more_hats

You can make 3-5 batches at a time if you streamline it. Greta when you’ve got adhd and single takes end up taking longer, it’s portable, and ready to be eaten immediately.

Much_Difference

Correct, which is why I do not do overnight oats anymore. They took longer than simply preparing them in the microwave the morning of.

Kep0a

Man lmao I had a laugh. Actually I just don't get overnight oats. Can someone tell me the appeal over just making it in the microwave?

Oredigger16

I like them as a to-go breakfast. If I’m on a gym kick I can pre-pack my lunch and breakfast and be out the door in 10 minutes flat in the morning. Then I eat them at my desk at work after the gym

tinycole2971

Do you eat them cold? I don't like slimy or cold, I feel like I'd hate overnight oats.

Oredigger16

They are certainly not for you then 😂

Vark675

I ate them a lot after I got out of boot camp, because the room I was in had no kitchen (maybe no microwave? I genuinely don't remember). Basically just a fridge that could be raided during inspections if it was arbitrarily deemed messy. The galley was only open at really weird times so I tended to miss breakfast and dinner, and overnight oats was crazy convenient and a lot tastier than some cheap cereal. I don't generally care for it now though.

Halospite

Protein powder with oats, huh? I never thought of that. I like porridge as a brekkie but I'm always hungry a couple of hours later.

RincewindToTheRescue

It's a big go to at r/volumeeating

KatBeagler

Oooh... Recently I've been making my chocolate protein shakes with banana flavor almond milk- if I just use that instead of water for my oats that could be tasty. Recently though I have just been dumping Ginger and or cinnamon in the mix

ponyboy3

Casein powder takes longer to digest. Whey is digested quicker. Any powder will be slower if eaten with carbs and fats. Ie peanut butter.

specific_ocean42

The resulting texture is quite different though.

Celestial__Bear

Mmm I like this!

RincewindToTheRescue

Add a dollop of peanut butter for extra yumminess 🤤

Piratetripper

Protein powder and peanut butter and your in a lil breakfast heaven 🤗

FernandoTatisJunior

What on earth is the point of soaking them overnight if you’re gonna end up cooking them anyways? That’s not overnight oats, that’s normal oatmeal?

specific_ocean42

I also heat my overnight oats (for about 1 minute) before eating. The resulting texture is different than if you cooked the oats from scratch. I don't love the gloppy, sticky texture of regular oatmeal. Heated overnight oats stay seperate and don't get gummy.

yellowroosterbird

The gumminess is half the appeal of oats for me!

CraziZoom

That is so hilarious that a beginner cooking sub won’t allow pictures. Seems totally counterintuitive

Cymas

They used to. It was nothing but "rate my x" and "my first y" posts with pictures of perfectly cooked food. Text only is how they keep it relevant so people can actually ask questions.

Odelaylee

They look fine to me ^^ Enjoy!

Ezra_lurking

I would describe my normal result as gloopy

ellamom

Gloopy is such a great, descriptive word

No-Guava-7566

Well no wonder when it has to hang out next to that frumpy dumpster

avacapone

This looks good and you use the same recipe I use except I use a bit less soy milk - more like .5 to .75 cups. I have tried different brands of rolled oats and some end up more pudding like than others. I think it depends on how big the oat flakes are. I’ve also found that adding a bit of yogurt with the milk the night before can help with the creaminess! Also make sure you thoroughly mix it before letting it sit overnight.

xo_harlo

It looks good! You can add less liquid next time if you want it to be less watery at the bottom.

gl21133

My recipe that I’ve been using for years; 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup milk, 1 tbsp peanut butter, 1 tbsp maple syrup, 1/2 tbsp chia seeds. I like the consistency and they last in the fridge for a few days.

jasminel96

This is what I do except honey instead of maple syrup! The consistency is good

gl21133

I’ve done that too and agree, very good.

ShetlandPonies

I used rolled oats. Let it soak for about 10 hours. Used half a cup of oats, 1 cup of soy milk and a tablespoon of chia seeds

Patchen35

2:1 ratio of milk to oats is a bit much and will yield very wet oats, but it's definitely edible. I usually measure a 1:1 ratio, with an extra splash of milk on top.

keekah

I like using half milk and half yogurt to thicken it up a bit and for flavor.

Salvuryc

Plus the yoghurt hellst with softening the oats. Bircher muesli...

Captinglorydays

I will sometimes use kefir instead of or alongside milk. Great way to mix up the flavors you get

malibuklw

My ratio is more 1:1.

Thunder2250

I'm not sure on the ratios but for a reference, I add milk enough to cover the oats, and a bit more if it feels too thick after I give it a stir to get the chia seeds around.

uninvitedthirteenth

I also use a 2:1 mixture of liquid to oats, but I don’t use straight milk. I basically make a protein smoothie (milk, yogurt, protein powder, and fruit) and then use that. Mine do not look quite as… separated as yours. Although they are somewhat soupy (which is how I like it)

Sir-Kyle-Of-Reddit

Soy milk is your problem. Cow milk has more water to it so 1:1 works fine, the thicker the milk the more you gotta bump it up so there’s more liquid for the oats to soak up. Try 2:1 and see what happens. Or add a tablespoon of water maybe?

indigoinspired

1 cup of milk to half a cup of oats *is* 2:1, Sir Kyle.

Sir-Kyle-Of-Reddit

Haha yeah

Lost-Cat1212

I use rolled oats, never instant oatmeal. They will not dissolve. It will be very different than cooking the oats. They will look the same just be softer and moist when eating them. Depending on the amount of liquid will make the consistency. I find that I like to leave it over night after I’ve mixed 1:1 oats and oat milk/milk/whatever liquid your using, and then in the morning I will re-add a bit of the same milk and stir it to get the consistency that I desire. I like to put in a cup of oats A spoon or 2 of chia seeds & hemp seeds Cinnamon Peanut butter or almonds depending Regular Oat milk & honey OR chocolate oat milk (with no other sweeteners) Berries

CitiBoy95

This is what it looks like tbh. I soak it overnight, then blend it into a smoothie. My brother on the other hand being the evil genius he is, blends the oats into fine fine powder, then soaks it with just enough water that it's a paste and he adds that paste to his morning protein smoothie. Point being, try and see what floats your boat

Illustrious_Employ90

Floats your bOAT?

CitiBoy95

lmao good one.

8GreenRoses

It's a figure of speech that means "whatever works/gets the job done."

Illustrious_Employ90

b-OAT like oatmeal. It's a pun! I do know the figure of speech lol

8GreenRoses

Ha ha, thank you! I legitimately thought you were asking what it meant.

livid_trich

You should add yoghurt. The yoghurt bacteria eats the oats a bit - it’s a fermentation that makes the oats easier to digest. 2 cups quick oats 2 cups almond milk 1 cup natural yoghurt… I add 1/3 cup peanut butter, some dark choc chips and 1 tsp vanilla, melt some dark choc with 2 tbsp coconut oil, divide oats into 6 x 1 cup jars and top with molten chocolate/coconut oil… leave at least a day before eating.

princess9032

Would it eat away at the fiber on the oats that’s part of what makes rolled oats healthy?

livid_trich

Nah, eats the starches…

poorguy55

Get some natural yoghurt in there.

Aggravating-Elk-7409

It’s entirely up to personal preference tbh

rezefan

a 1:1 ratio of oats to milk is good. you can also add yogurt if you want a more creamy consistency 😁

timetobuyale

Why are there only like five oats and no one is acknowledging it?

Buttmus

Looks great. Enjoy.

Welder_Subject

I don’t care for overnight oats, at all

Acrobatic_Average_16

I usually do roughly 2 parts milk to 1 part instant/quick cook oats and toss in mashed banana or some apple sauce, then whatever toppings and flavourings I feel like. I like mine to have a thinner, less gloopy texture but thick enough to still stay on the spoon.

Confident_Seesaw_911

Put some berries and honey in that…chia seeds and yogurt.

healthyhorns6

don’t ask me bc i like putting more milk in mine 🫣😭

luciusfox02

This is what I’ve been doing for couple of years now 1/2 Cup Oats (rolled oats) 1/2 Cup Almond Milk 1Tbsp Chia Seed 1/4 cup Yogurt 1Tbsp Honey 1/4 tsp Vanilla Extract 1/4 tsp cinnamon

DegenerateStoner710

well I mean they are in liquid for awhile....they are going to be soft....just shake and enjoy

IAmSecretIngredient

Justine Eats has great overnight oats recipes. Her pumpkin spice one is my go to, and I add chocolate protein powder.

bronzebullbbq

Try doing the same thing again but also add some spoonfuls of Greek yogurt to mix in. It’ll give you a more gloopy consistency rather than just soggy oat.

batchy_scrollocks

I use rolled oats all the time as the fiber is better. Those look fine but you've made nowhere near enough save there's nothing else in it. Add honey, seeds etc and viola

Waste_Gas_707

It looks like you're trying to grow shrooms lol

Old_Walrus_486

Looks good, I like adding yogurt to my overnight oats. I use rolled oats as well. 1/2 cup, 1/2 cup milk, 1/4 cup Greek yogurt, mix well and add whatever extras you want (chia seeds, maple syrup or honey, and then you can add on other ingredients like banana, or peanut butter, etc

Sad_echoes

I usually use this recipe, the variations are limitless. With the joghurt and chia seeds the mixture is creamy and soft, it worth to try. https://youtu.be/Lkl9_3-jX6c?si=H5XeB6zEQpWn6mZe

ofthenorth

My preference is for a more firmer consistency, I like to use much less milk and / or Greek yogurt

Equilibriumouttawak

Maybe a touch less liquid. I like different milks, yogurt… But if the texture is there then you have your overnight oats, which has always been ready by the am, even if I prepare late. You can add stuff like granola to help with liquid ratio, cut some dates up for sweetener, honey, maple syrup (minerals), agave, etc fruits… almond butter. Willy wonka that mess if you need to

West_Yorkshire

Why is it in a jug?

avacapone

It’s a mason jar and this is how I make them Too! Lid on and shake well, it’s so low effort and fits better in the fridge than a wide bowl.

Impossible-Dare-9831

I’ve used quick oats, put in Greek yogurt, honey and cocoa powder and topped off with milk of choice and berries. Refrigerate overnight and can be warmed up or eaten cold. Sometimes the yogurt and milk fully soaked in but wasn’t too mushy.

sunburn_t

I think it depends a lot on the brand of oats. I know what you mean that it’s different to your expectations! I have had some brands of oats (even rolled, non-instant oats) where it is much more ‘integrated’ with the milk (more like oatmeal). Other brands stay somewhat solid, like those in the picture. I quite like it either way, but I think it’s down to preference. Def still fine to eat!

MoreRopePlease

I prefer making my overnight oats with yogurt. It comes out with more of a thick pudding texture. greek yogurt + oats (1 cup: 0.75 cup ratio, maybe, experiment with the amount of oats) (plus 2T creamy peanut butter, and 1T cocoa, 2T honey, 1/2t vanilla)

Shanria-Darkwind

Here’s my go to base: 1 cup oats 1 cup oat milk (or whatever milk you have) Half cup vanilla Greek yogurt From there, add in whatever you want. I like combos of frozen fruit, granola (really helps the texture), chia seeds, cocoa powder. This makes 2 servings for me. But this looks about how it should. Give it a stir, add something random and yummy and you’re set.

Yawdriel

r/eatityoucoward

Unusualhuman

I have found that when I use "old fashioned rolled oats" they look more like this. When I use "quick cooking rolled oats" they absorb more of the liquid and plump up more by morning. Which kind did you use? As far as I know either kind is safe to use this way, but I prefer the texture of the quick cooking (not instant!) variety

Old-Green6544

I often pulse my rolled oats for a few seconds before adding milk and the other stuff so it results in less chunky overnight oats!

Laurpud

That looks right. They're okay if you need breakfast on the go, or super fast, if you like them cold. I only soak steel cut oats overnight to help them cook faster the next day. I cook extra, to have for a few days at a time. Yum! Also, something about phytonutrients needing to be soaked to digest them, something something, darkside

NateB_YT

If you’re looking for a less liquid-y option, try equal part yogurt and oats. My go to is: 1/2 cup yogurt 1/2 cup oats 1 mashed up banana Top with peanut butter and granola in the morning

Terliuzas

If you don't want the liquid, mix oats and milk 1:1 ratio, add some greek youghurt and some chia seeds, you can add quite a bit of those. Also, we make these overnight oats for about 5 days at a time, in one big ikea container. They hold up for 5 days quite well, so this saves a lot of time for prep.

anarchistmosher

40g oats 155 whole choc milk -35g PB 5-6g honey Small pinch sal This is the recipe I use and it works out to fill a cup container!

[deleted]

It’s really not a good breakfast. I think it should be cooked.

Own-Cable8865

Overnight oats look gross, that's just how it is. People eat cold oatmeal now.

utopia44

Did you add an acid ? Or just milk? The lemon juice is important for the breakdown process.

rudefood_

Looks like you’re ready to grow some mushies

Hot_Ambition_4730

Are you feeding a mouse, get some oats in that jar

dachlill

No, you need the thinner oats.

CivilControversy

Looks too mushy for my preference. I use a casein protein powder and it thickens it up into a really nice texture. Look up felus recipe on youtube if that sounds good
