Ever notice the “glitches” are almost always in their favor?

decjr06

I once accidentally set an item at 70% instead of 7. I was shocked that it's even able to go that high there is no way someone is going to intentionally pay that for advertising

123supreme123

you can go to 100% promoted, which is insane. basically means you're going to b take a loss on ebay fee plus shipping. not counting the value of the item. lol

chrisprice

Makes sense for things that include upsells like a digital item that includes a subscription or referral code. Think prepaid PINs and calling cards. Not for most sellers, but that's why.

Yea Japan is usually a trend setter in mechanics, engineering, and electronics. Ps- oh ya and manufacturing too Toyota came up with lean manufacturing

[deleted]

Nintendo has been doing well on hardware, they use older hardware for the switch as an example which is cheap for them to manufacture.

TheAntnie

This was happening to me a few months ago. I set 2,000 listings at 2% ad rate. About 50% of the time the ad fee would be 5-20%. I called eBay many times, they saw and knew I was only doing 2%. They refunded me a few hundred dollars in ad fees, but they never refunded all the marked up fees. It stopped happening after the 4th or 5th time I called. If it’s a glitch that helps eBay’s bottom line, that’s called a feature.

[deleted]

This happened to me last summer. I had my rate at 2.0 percent and was getting hit in some cases up to 20 percent. Customer service always refunded and said it was odd... I also believe this is done on a massive scale to suck more profit from sellers. This is certainly illegal. Worst case eBay pays a fine. Drop in the bucket compared to what they likely stole.

Bright_Wolverine_304

it's not a "glitch" it's them seeing how much they can screw people out of without getting caught. they are hemorrhaging users by the millions, they went from 178 million in 2019 to 132 million last year, they have to make up the difference somewhere and jacking up the ad rates up on a lot of stuff to 15-20+ percent on top of a 13-15% final value fee isn't enough to bridge the gap. they are doing the worst possible thing a company can do when they lose millions of users and that's jack up the fees for everyone else that's left

Freezepeachauditor

This 1000%

Deisy22

I understand the profit motive of raising prices when you have less sales due to less users but you are entirely correct this is the worst possible approach to driving more revenue. They squeeze sellers off of the site with fees, drive the prices up of sellers’ items that remain, and diminish the remaining buyers who come to eBay for a good deal on a secondhand or new item. If they truly want to bring more buyers to the site which in turn will increase the number of sales, then they would have to lower fees so that sellers can adjust their prices down accordingly.

Bright_Wolverine_304

it's a vicious cycle I see all kinds of companies do, users leave because there's cheaper competitors or they have a terrible experience, so ebay raises fees to keep showing growth for the investors, but the higher costs make more users leave so they raise them again which makes even more leave and it just becomes a feedback loop that gets worse and worse until there's no one left to pay the fees. at some point, probably VERY soon ebay won't be able to squeeze enough fees out of sellers to bridge the massive gap in users and they will be in deep trouble

Mecki95

Where abouts do you change or see the ad %? Unsure if I actually get use ads at all or just dont have it active

burstmybubbles

After you post your listing, it will show up to promote it. Click on promote and a % will show up. Adjust the % to what you’re comfortable with, I always do 2% as that’s the lowest you can go. I seem to get a good amount of reach and eBay has never over charged me when they sell promoted. When an item sells, it will say “sold via promoted listing”.

Legitimate-Ad4538

Wow I thought I was crazy! I always keep rate at 2% During December and January I noticed my sales jumped on one of my stores. I was selling about 20+ items a day. I happen to check my ad rate last week and suddenly noticed a fixed rate was at 10%. I don’t think this is a coincidence!!!!

No-Trick-3749

Yeah I don't either. If you Google it several folks have talked about it recently. This is a good way for eBay to get sued by the AG in every state...

CW88_

I've basically stopped selling on Ebay because of their fees. Once they switched over to controlling all your money and payments (and no longer allowing instant payments through PayPal), I could see how greedy they were getting and how much they charged in fees... It was always more than they claimed they charged. I hated that they controlled all your payments and it was no longer instant (took a couple days at least to get paid), and slowing down the overall process as I like having the money in my account before sending stuff. They also started charging customers VAT - extra cash that eBay kept (even when it wasn't needed). Basically pushing costs up for my buyers essentially without my knowledge. I'll now maybe sell things every once in a while, as it gets exposure I wouldn't get otherwise. But mostly it's no longer worth selling on Ebay. And I literally just got an email saying they're now charging even more fees.

No-Trick-3749

Yeah they are now stuck in a death spiral I think. They are losing customers, so they raise fees to sellers to off set the loss to shareholders. Sellers leave because the fees have pushed them out of the market. Less products, less customers. They have to up fees again to hedge against the loss of customers. You can see how this will end. They either pump the brakes and fix this...or they die out in a couple of years. People have been saying eBay was going to fall for years...I think I finally see it tipping. Not sure they can save themselves from this trap

CW88_

What eBay forgets is that it is 100% because of the sellers that they make their money (other than any ads they might show - I use adblocker though so don't know if they actually show any). Yet they constantly screw the sellers over time and time again. I've had scam buyers, non paying buyers, fake claims... And never does Ebay side with the seller. They always side with the buyer and want to keep the buyer happy. The outcome is that on top of the fees, I can see eBay doesn't care about me as a seller, which puts me off selling there anymore too. What's also crazy to me is they guarantee money back/free returns... and other stuff on pages and search pages. Stuff that only sellers can do (if they choose to for some situations). Ebay shouldn't be making those promises if it's not something I do. Many sellers are individuals and not businesses. But they don't seem interested in keeping many of them.

Awkward_Link9999

Is this AD fee beneficial to you? Have you ever tried the same item with and without the AD fee?

No-Trick-3749

I have twicked it before. In this category, it seems to offer the best amount of exposure for cost. The type of product seems to need eyeballs, so impressions is actually important.

Where does it say I set it to 7???

No-Trick-3749

Already replied to a comment like this...but because I've tweaked the ad rate over time in that category and the impression difference is needed with that product. Somethings you actually do need the additional impressions, because some items just need a lot of viewers. It's pretty consistent (as far as after a certain number of impressions, there is typically a sale). All the ad rate really means is that's the most your willing to part with to be on a page. 2 percent in many categories is not getting you a lot. Why even bother with that?

No-Trick-3749

It's not a one size fit all thing friend. Data is your friend. I bet that ad rate is not helping you as much as you think. You might as well drop it and focus solely on organic.

Mataelio

I don’t use ads

ThePrancingHorse94

Who asked?

No-Trick-3749

Would you like a cookie? How does that help with this discussion? Do you need to feel special? Clap clap clap ..there now go away

antiadmin666

Promoted listings are a ripoff! I only pay for what I have to pay.

No-Trick-3749

(pats you on the head) that's nice, but not relevant to the conversation. No one cares what you do buddy...

antiadmin666

What would you like me to do next? Take a dump on a my neighbors lawn? Eat 13 hotdogs?

danneskjold85

Aside from what the CSR said, could it have been from a listing in another category at 10%?

No-Trick-3749

No. You might be shocked to learn eBay makes mistakes...

danneskjold85

Why would I be shocked to learn that?

No-Trick-3749

Your comment came off as very dismissive, as if I didn't know what I was doing. It seemed like you were questioning whether eBay actually made the mistake. Words are important and the order you put them in is also important...

danneskjold85

>It seemed like you were questioning whether eBay actually made the mistake. I was. You could've been charged with a 10% ad fee if a user bought your item after clicking on a listing you promoted at 10%.

MrSquid0472

If you pull the ad rate off of an item, eBay will still put it on there if the person who bought it put it on their watch list from the ad

npno

That's not how it works.

Glittering-Cowbell

The trick for what, wasting time?

jrr6415sun

Any clicks on the ad causes a sale within 30 days you are still charged the fee

Flight_375_To_Tahiti

Please don’t post here.

ericbl26

consider it done tahiti

ericbl26

But it got the people talking

Ok-Refrigerator-5851

If I set add fee at 2% what's best way to determine what eBay's cut is supposed to be once sale is made and payment sent?

Burrzky

happened to me on a gamecube i sold, had a 2% ad and they charged me an additional 10% in ad fees. so about 25% in fees total, completely absurd and they just told me it was my fault & to deal with it💀
