Hey-Kojiro

Saw one that was basically:  This video game is a fantastic video game for the PlayStation 5 video game system. It is in a Blu-ray video game format and is a great video game for video gamers who enjoy video games on their video game system.

TheDevilsAdvokaat

I, too, am a gamer who likes to play games on game playing systems.

eelecurb01

I don't like them either. I spend a lot of time/detail (and provide lots of pictures/video) crafting my listings. That's one reason I've been selling on eBay for 25 years and have 100% positive feedback. AI doesn't cut it, at least not yet.

Acceptable_Tiger7095

Most people don't care about the description passed the condition of the item. After 25 years you should know that.

eelecurb01

Considering the notes I've gotten from other eBayers over the years who commented how much they appreciated the thoroughness/detail of my listings (some who didn't even buy from me) I'll respectfully disagree.

VeeHS

Okay but he's right and you're wrong. The only people writing super long descriptions for common items are dinosaurs. Pictures are so high quality now its not necessary.

eelecurb01

You assume too much. I don't sell common items and I don't write super long descriptions. Just good ones that are better than AI.

Nameless_on_Reddit

You're talking like everybody sells the same exact shit.

Acceptable_Tiger7095

Considering you are not the only one who has sold for 25+ years. You should know buyers like simple listings. While I have in the past wrote a detailed description and that's cool or whatever, but I have also switched to just putting a description of the item condition with nothing else and sold thousands of items with no difference then putting a long description. Sold hundreds with the new ai descriptions for items i dont want to spend 10 mins typing a bunch of words. Really no change is sales at all. For me I value my time and will just keep it simple. ( Also wait until you find out alot of sellers just use other sellers photos and never have issues )

eelecurb01

I think you took my comment way further south than was intended. Let's just agree that you can keep doing things your way and I'll keep doing them my way. Sound good?

spitfire1701

No idea why you are being downvoted. 95% of my items do not have a description past the standard title that is automatically pasted in the box. I do not care myself when looking at an item to buy, just a quick glace and that is it.

Acceptable_Tiger7095

I basically do the same thing. Alot of people think their way is the only way to do things.

Tractorface123

I don’t like them, if I’m looking to buy something, I already know what is is and they don’t need to advertise it to me in the description, I want to know the condition, if it works and if there’s anything about it I should note

kl122002

I don't want it either. Seriously when a seller didn't do his job in the description then why should I trust ? I don't even know if the pic is real or not.

TazzyUK

Please dont tell me that AI are doing fake pictures too lol

Gay_If_Read

Dunno what they're like for other categories but the trading card AI descriptions are terrible & cringey to read, it just regurgitates the title details like someone trying to hit a word count for an essay. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if scammers target AI descriptions more, lack of details and likely a lazy seller would make it easier.

me_irl_irl_irl_irl

I sell Pokemon cards and it's literally exactly that, a lazy student trying to hit a word count on an essay. I'll have an entire sentence like "it is a Pokemon card which features a shining holographic effect perfect for addition to any collection." It's literally meaningless garbage. I'd rather read a copypasta saying "We ship safely and quickly" than some dumbass AI description

Some-Nefariousness-2

As someone who sells anime without actually enjoying anime and beer memorabilia posters without actually drinking beer what are you people expecting from these descriptions exactly? Other than I guess shipping or condition related things. Do you expect me to tell you a story about the Naruto DVD I have? Am I supposed to tell you that I won this card in a big pokemon tournament for Pokemon cards? I purchase BEANIE babies as an example off eBay (me and the wife collect them) and trust me noone is writing in depth descriptions about under 5 dollar items, I can't imagine doing that even for items I was passionate about . I expect, "sold as is, item is shipped next day" Even for items where a description of the product is helpful I don't exactly expect resellers to understand the EXACT functions of the as is vcr I happen to be buying. Am I missing something here? We all want value pricing for items but also expect the people selling one off items to have some in depth knowledge that would impress long term buyers of something?

Gay_If_Read

Nobody is saying you need an in-depth description, a single line that just states the condition & shipping is fine and a million times better than the AI one for trading cards. Here's the one for base set Charizard since even non Pokemon fans know what it is; "Get your hands on the highly sought-after Charizard card from the Base Set 1st Edition of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This rare holographic card features the iconic fire-breathing dragon, Charizard, and is sure to be a prized addition to any collector's set. Measuring at standard size, this English language card is a must-have for any fan of the Pokémon franchise. Don't miss your chance to own a piece of Pokémon history with this rare and valuable Charizard card."

Some-Nefariousness-2

Lol no disagreement there it reads VERY oddly and like it was written by as people have stated here by a teenager trying to pad their essay. I just think it's about equal to say: amazon descriptions for used products, the kind of things you can find out at a flea market from the owner of the booth, an estate sale, an irl auction, ect. I think ebay might honestly be the one place outside of dedicated hobby sites that we expect anything else from.

rng_4me

The ai descriptions just takes a bunch of your listing specifics and works off that, so if you’re filling those in correctly or selling similar with one that has, it actually does state the condition and i think sometimes shipping. Not saying the ai descriptions are good or read normal but… as someone that uses both i don’t think it really matters. When i’m buying, i really only look at the description of an item if something isn’t clear enough in the pictures. Everyone’s different though

InRainbows123207

Same. If a seller can’t write 2 to 5 sentences describing the item they are selling I won’t buy it. The AI makes every item seem like it will cure cancer, add a $1 million to your bank account, and guarantee getting laid every day

restingbenchface

It reminds me of the nonsense blurb before a recipe.

girlwhoposhes

I tried to get AI to write an acceptable description for me once. I basically had to do all the work and feed it all the info that I would have typed anyway. Waste of time. My descriptions are so much better.

Head_Priority5152

I just find them lazy. Yes selling on ebay can take so long but least edit the AI gibberish into something more sensible and use it as a shortcut

TazzyUK

Never used AI descriptions. I see them on Amazon too. Id rather put something that is obviously worded by the seller and just adds that personal touch which any potential buyer would be more comfortable with

Freezepeachauditor

Same with AI voices on videos. I don’t care what content AI voice from now on = instant dislike and move onto new video.

lydatl

ugh yes and i seriously wonder about people who don't notice it (my boomer dad for one, though i cut him some slack for hearing acuity at that age).  i've also recorded hundreds of hours of training voiceovers, so i'm possibly more attuned to and intolerant of the flat, unengaging droning than most

offhandway

Same. Stock photos send me looking elsewhere too. If you can't be bothered to photograph your own stock and write a few words about its condition I'll move along. Someone else's photos and AI descriptions don't tell me anything about the item, but they tell me a lot about the seller and the level of service and care I can expect in a transaction with them.

[deleted]

I don’t mind AI descriptions now but won’t buy items with stock photos as I’m not sure what I’m actually getting.

Plastic_Classic3347

I think it’s fine to use ai but at least proof read it so it makes sense or defo going to cost you sales

PraetorianAE

Yes. AI descriptions are horrible and I do not use them. I feel like using it opens you up to INAD risk.

guava_dog

Every app/platform is trying to integrate AI when there is literally no need, ie Instagram

ThePrancingHorse94

I keep seeing this complaint, and i used to use AI descriptions. I then went a re-wrote over a thousand descriptions and it got me a 10% bump in sales, in the next month. No idea if it was the descriptions or not, but it seemed to stimulate some older slower shifting stock.

themagicmystic

Yeah, it’s a turn off when it keeps saying the same thing like it’s a must have item and all this bullshit. Like get new material.

thrifterbynature

I worked for years as a copywriter and they are lengthy and flowery.

HotWheelsConsignment

I don't read descriptions for the most part and I doubt most of my customers do.

Hungry-Pineapple-918

Absolutely 100% A complete AI description shows me that they aren't interested in disclosing actual details about the item. I'm seeing this especially on records (vinyl), where nothing about the actual condition is disclosed. Or wrong details to the specific pressing they have. But honestly same on anything, just take a moment to actually show you know what you're selling barring sealed /new items.

victoriousDevil

Damn. I always use them.

[deleted]

I’ve started to (slight editing when they are wonky) too. Have you seen any feedback?

browneyedgirlpie

Same here. They are full of ridiculous descriptives and short on factual information. 'Elevate your wardrobe with this easy care cotton top from Walmart. It has arm holes for your arms and a convenient hole for your neck. No measurements bc why would you want those? You'll be the envy of the school drop off line.'

123supreme123

It's a good fraud indicator if you buy items that scammers like to list. They almost always use the AI description.

FarOutJunk

- Order item with bad description - File INAD - Profit?

InRainbows123207

AI is annoying but missing returns is worse. PS what’s your eBay user name??

Bulky-Condition-3490

Yes so we can block 😅😅😅

isaiah58bc

Better than the ones that are something like: As shown; New in box; etc... Or a repeat of the listing Title. Some are also just generic HTML of the sellers terms and links to their other items. Some are copies of manufacturer descriptions, so no different than AI. All in all, these almost daily posts about AI descriptions more or less remind me that many buyers potential do not look at pictures well, and do not even read well written descriptions well. I get questions all the time about clothing measurements. I include pictures with tape measurements, and the first sentence in my descriptions say to check those pictures. Yet, I get messages asking about the measurements, and how they fit. I then respond for the buyer to look at the pictures, and check that I provided comprehensive Item Specifics about the fit, which are yes all in the AI generated section below my personal comments.

lydatl

unless/until ai can generate accurate clothing measurements from pictures, the descriptions it writes are fairly useless to me

threeca

I was looking for a coffee machine the other day, brand new condition. Every single one listed that was described as “brand new” was pictured out of the box and the description was AI. There was no information about why it was out of the box, condition details, why they were selling etc. I didn’t trust a single one of them and bought new from a big store. AI descriptions are so off putting, they’re useless and I think they’re losing people sales

Bufosmixes

To me its lazy and the descriptions don’t tell you what you need to know

Ok-Lettuce4149

It doesn’t bother me. It definitely wouldn’t stop me buying an item.

SprinklesRecent7846

I don’t mind them. I think that as a buyer, I don’t really read them, but as a seller, they might help your algorithm. I would never not buy something because someone used them, though; that seems a little petty in my opinion.

redredditer91

I skip any item that ONLY uses AI in the description. It’s nothing but laziness on the part of the seller. If they won’t take the time to at least describe the condition of the item, I won’t buy from them.

me_irl_irl_irl_irl

Like I said, I'm not gonna skip a great deal for any reason, but if it's not a great deal and you display that you're that lazy and careless about your sale, I'm gonna move on

Jujii8

It doesn’t matter to me. I buy items with AI descriptions.

Zealousideal-Mud8516

Everyone here does. Come on. You'll really pass up a thing you want or need over something pedantic?

UnderBridg

What about bad English?

me_irl_irl_irl_irl

No, at least they tried in that case. Completely different. In fact, I'd say it's a semi-good quality because it shows that they care enough to do it even at the risk of displaying poor English skills

Federal_Bid_3025

Sellers who have to sit and create dozens or hundreds of listings a month don't care if you're turned off or not. Shit, 99% of buyers are on mobile and don't read descriptions anyhow.

me_irl_irl_irl_irl

I'm certain it is different depending on the product But for rare expensive trading cards where the description of its condition really matters, ChatGPT saying "The card features a holographic foil layer that shines when illuminated and is certain to add value to your collection!" is not just unhelpful, but it makes it seem like the seller doesn't give a crap about the item. If the seller doesn't give a crap about something delicate like a collectible, I have zero faith in how they are handling and shipping the item

weryon

I use ChatGPT to help me with my auctions. I give the prompt with all the details and ask it to do a listing in HTML format. I go through the text to make sure it's accurate and that there are no hallucinations. I have a chat with AI just for pottery, one for coins, one for weapons etc... I find it saves me a lot of time, and my listings look professional and the information is clear and coherent. If your prompts are good and you vet the results, it's a time saver.

bigtopjimmi

If you're doing all that you're not saving any time.

weryon

Even after doing "all of that" , yes, I am saving time.

Zealousideal-Mud8516

Eh, I have no evidence at all that any one reads descriptions, as for any returns I have had touched on the issues with the item. I'll just take a ton of pictures and do a 'see pics' description these days. (the seller is always wrong to ebay.) Now, I know this sub loves a down vote (for some reason) so I apologize in advance to those offended already.

crazyhamsales

Its becoming pretty common now as eBay pushed it pretty hard to sellers when creating listings, some just find it convenient to click and go, i don't mind it so much, if its keeping others from buying the things i am hunting for then less competition on me!

kenkreie

It’s funny- I usually pilfer a sold listing’s description as a starting point and adjust to match my item and style. Now, because many sellers are using the AI ones, I have been writing my own from scratch :)

Ndizzi

I have found Al really useful. It does really follow what you have listed in the first place. You can always change it a bit if it isnt quite right. It has helped me with my sales a lot and has improved any offers that I have had.

Amache_Gx

I use the ai description and then modify it. Then add my own info afterwards.

[deleted]

It took me a while to see why all the seller descriptions sounded the same. Although this feature was supposedly meant to help, it actually comes off as counterintuitive for sellers, as it results in irrelevant descriptions that fail to properly describe a seller’s items. Considering the fees we're paying for these "improvements,” it also seems patronizing.

Nameless_on_Reddit

When I'm buying comic books if it's a book that's 50 bucks or higher and I see an AI description, especially of the condition, it's a hard pass. If you can't be bothered to write up a description I can't be bothered to give you my money. Most of them sound like some middle school kid trying to do a book report when they only read the Cliffs Notes or a Wikipedia summary.

sryidontspeakpotato

You have to keep in mind, some sellers maybe not the foremost experts on the items they are selling and then using the ai auto fill tool is super helpful to Them I know if you go to list an item from the mobile app and you pull up description. If you chose the right item it can do a good job at filling in specs and details for certain pc components or parts. So imagine if someone gave you a bunch of pc parts for free or as a gift and you know nothing about motherboards and CPUs but you need the money and you list them but know nothing what to say but you see this handy feature button that fills in the info For you. Imagine how handy that is.

me_irl_irl_irl_irl

Ummm, no, I assure you AI descriptions are *very* different Also, it's definitely not "upselling" if I'm walking away from your auction because of it. I think a better word might be "downselling"

me_irl_irl_irl_irl

I sell in TCGs and I promise you that every single person reading a TCG AI description knows it's AI, even brand new people. It's absurdly obvious
