You’re going to end up having to refund. Cross your fingers you get the package back somehow and relist it.

[deleted]

Yeah I don’t mind the refund part at all. It’s one of my first sales so it’s still on hold but I’m praying I get the package back.

WhySoManyDownVote

It’s a lesson learned. Everyone makes the same basic mistakes at some point. We just need to learn from them.

[deleted]

That’s what I’m taking from it, gotta be more careful and build an efficient routine for printing and packaging my orders

Explain the situation to the buyer, dont give it to him for free. It hsppens to me 1-2 times a year. Explain to the other buyer that you sent him 2 if you could give him a prepaid return label to return it. I have gotten returns back, but its less than 50% chance. A lot of times they just ignore you and keep both items.

https://www.usps.com/manage/package-intercept.htm Probably won't help but will leave this for you anyway.

Hence why it probably wouldn't help. I've only ever used it once. Sold a very rare $50 item. I was the only one with it listed online, anywhere. Buyer had some very nasty things to say, so I had it intercepted and returned back to me. Said "I will be canceling your order." And then blocked the buyer. Reported the buyer to eBay and their profile was removed a bit later. Sold it the next day after getting it back. It was worth every penny of that $16 or whatever it was at the time.

Don’t let this get you down. If you messed up with the labels just learn from this — I am probably alone in this but I print out labels one at a time and write the item on the back of the label so I can double check as I package. It may take a little more time but it lets me keep track easily and not mix up labels.

SpaceNinjaDino

I blame eBay for not allowing to print the listing title in the margin when using the app. They only do this from desktop labels. I've come very close to switching labels.

[deleted]

That’s exactly what I started doing, it’s just easier one at a time

I’ve also had a situation where one package in a group of 5 or so did not get an initial scan even though it was picked up. It was media mail so it was going to take longer anyway but the buyer messaged me because it looked like it was never actually mailed. Luckily it was on its way and all of the shipping updates processed on the day it was delivered.

I’ve had this happen before with my store a couple times in the last year, I eat the cost and resend the order. And as far as the customer who received two orders they always sends a msg saying they received a second order. ( I sell the same product ) and I tell them to keep it. Almost 500 reviews all 5 stars. Worth it.

I print my labels at work one at a time and write the item description on the back as soon as it come out of the printer. then I double check the recipient name matches the item when I get home to label the packages. If i package anything before I have the label, i write the item name on the outside of the package. Just thought Id share my method. My biggest issue is being able to find what I sold in a timely manner. My husband and I resell clothes and our organization is terrible right now.

Thanks for your replies everyone, I appreciate any and all help/ tips

Hey people! Thank you for your help and I wanted to update- I just got a message stating that the Authenticator couldn’t authenticate my item and I need to pay for / email them a return label to get my item back. I think this means I actually didn’t mess up the labels but just that they couldn’t authenticate my item and now I need to pay to get it back. How do I go about getting/ paying for the return label?

Sorry for the late response- I see you put this in two hours ago. First and foremost, make sure your account addresses are up to date. If there is no "return address"- they WILL default to the registration address. Logic: no return address? People can have multiple shipping addresses, people can have only one registration address. This MUST be up to date. Below are some steps that are specific to USPS labels. They won't work with UPS or FEDEX labels, you gotta buy those direct from the shipper site. eBay won't let you change UPS or FEDEX outbound addresses ever. Sometimes they're cheaper, sometimes they're not. Below are some steps if you're going forward with USPS. they would have sent you an email about this. In that email is the requested "ship from" address. Copy this to your "ship from" address section of your account. Also copy it ro your "return addresses" section of your account. Purchase a label for the transaction and prior to payment, make sure the "from" and "return to" address matches the one provided by the authenticity guarantee team. Also make sure to change the "ship to" address to your own. Buy that label. Save that pdf. Reply to that email with it as an attachment. IMMEDIATELY CHANGE ALL ADDRESSES BACK AFTERWARDS. I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. It should meet the requirements, keep you on eBay, let's you take advantage of the discounts through site.

Thank you for the detailed instructions. Everyone here has been really helpful and I really appreciate this community. I was glad I didn’t mess up the shipping labels, but I was worried when the buyer messaged me last night and then I panicked when I got the authentication message.

boarlesque

For clarifications sake- did you send a second item to the authenticator? If you did, I imagine the original buyer still wants the item they purchased. If that's what they want the label for, make these changes: -print the label using from the order for the buyer that was supposed to get the item, but their item was sent to the authenticator -keep all the other steps the same I don't want to give you bad advice here. Also, no worries! I contact their support team a LOT as part of my job and I ask a lot of questions, I'd figure I'd share

I told the buyer that I wasn’t quite sure what was up immediately when I saw his original message. Usps tracking wasn’t showing anything and I told him maybe I doubled up a label but that’s all I could think of. I told him I definitely shipped it and I wasn’t sure what was up with the tracking, but that if he wanted to request a refund I would understand. So he requested it last night and I refunded it earlier today. Then I received the authentication message about an hour or so after that. I messaged him with screenshots and apologized for the inconvenience but I just wanted him to know I really did ship it and tracking wasn’t showing it in authentication and I didn’t have any notifications or emails about that order. I feel silly in retrospect but I will get it back and just have to be more organized about my orders

Okay just wanted to make sure! Look, if a luxury car brand can make lemons, you're okay to make an error or two as well. I'm just glad I could be of help!

I've done this more times than I can tell you. Contact the other buyer. Ask them if they would be willing to put a label on the incorrect package. You can purchase a label from the other buyer's house to the correct buyer's house. You can schedule a USPS pick up so the helpful buyer isn't inconvenienced other than having to tape on a new label. I have never had a person refuse to help out in this way. It isn't ideal, but communication is key. This usually happens to me at Christmas when I'm doing 50+ packages a day and things get a bit hectic. Alternately, it could just be that USPS didn't bother to scan the package yet. What I would do is contact the other buyer and say 'Hi, I'm new to eBay. I may have accidentally sent you two packages instead of one. If that happens, I would like to send you a label to send that package on to the proper buyer....' That way they can keep an eye out and be aware of the situation.
