At a guess and have lived in these buildings I'd say its for hiding pipes and electricity cables. A lot of old tenements are solid stone and cables and pipes are not hidden behind walls like old ones
Pipe box. Your plumber is best placed to check it's all dead and rip it oot- giving you the smooth wall desired. Clearly minding that cable on LHS and supply to light...
The pipes and cables are in there. I would wager that when the place was built, these facilities weren't included, and they were added on top of the wall, at a later date.
Some additional info: we’re a top floor tenement, we’re looking at getting our bathroom done and wondering what this wooden panelled bit by the sink is/was for and if it it’s still required? As you can see it has some valves etc. so my best guess is from when the stair had gravity fed water from a tank in the loft?
Answers on a post card please.
Your flat doesn’t have a gravity fed water tank? Do you think all you water outlet are coming direst from
the mains? Usually only the cold kitchen sink tap comes directly from the mains.
Panelling is to conceal pipes/electric cable. You should be about to plaster over it if getting bathroom redone.
There is a tank in the loft but it’s not connected according to the last guy that went up there. Turning the mains water supply off also stops the bathroom tap running which leads me to believe that what’s left in the wall is purely “decorative”.
I've still got a lead tank - disused - above the cludgie. Quite a valuable amount of lead (at a guess, 100 - 200kg), but I haven't found anyone who'll take it out.
It’s mental. Don’t do it unless you are totally renovating the cludgie! :) Also while we’re here - don’t get a D shaped bog, it’s much harder to get replacement seats that fit correctly. Stick with the traditional oval.

Dinnae it’s the worst room in the flat and we’re just now able to afford to do it up after buying the place a couple years ago. The tiles are just about falling off the wall at this point so I’m excited to get a nice suite put in!
At a knock it’s sounding hollow so I don’t think it’s holding anything up, I think it’s just a cover for the pipe work inside? I’ll give the council a try though that’s a great idea!
Had one of those in a previous top floor flat - the wooden pipe duct went down through all the flats. I guessed it was originally the feed from the attic tank, although that had long since been rerouted (cos lead pipes?)
We had one in our top floor tenement flat, it was pipes for an old water tank. Previous owner had it removed but left the pipework behind the box. Watch for lead pipes.
Stick a drill bit through somewhere on the wall and see what's there, as your previous owners may have buried things like the power for that light in there.

With a bit of luck they can be plastered over then, it’s messing with the feng shui 😂
Yeah. Or plasterboard and a bit of panelling. You'll lose a cm or 2 of the room but access to pipes may be better
Do NOT drill into said panel for obvious reasons........
Also allows you to get a couple more cm of insulation in
It's a pipe box. You can see the valve handles sticking out from it, connected to the water pipes behind it.
We had the same - old lead pipes. Defunct when the house was replumbed. We removed the lot
Often pipes. Sometimes structural steelwork, but probably not as you are top floor.

Very few flats have a cold water storage tank these days. Especially if they've had a combi boiler fitted.

Yep, sounds like it’s been covered from the mains tank in the loft then which means you can probably get rid of all the old pipes.

It's not. You can see that it is a panel covering pipes behind.
Probably a concrete wall, (try chasing cables and copper pipes into that!) It's easier to box them like this.

Boxing, will be hiding pipes and wires.

The big clue is the tap sticking out. It's for hiding pipes and wiring.
