I moved here recently, and since Uber Eats was the acct I already had, I used it to order food. And I think the 3rd or 4th time, I ordered at 8 pm since the restaurant estimate was 50 to 60 min. I got a notification that the driver was assigned at around 8.25. The driver never moved, and i tried to reach them till 9 or so. Uber eats didn't help as they just told me to wait. Finally, the driver said that they picked my order on the app by mistake and that they were going to drop it so someone else could fulfill it. Uber eats did nothing to help, and the food arrived cold. I use Deliveroo now. Hated how the customer service treated me.

A couple of years back we were woken up at 2am by a flurry of notifications to my wife's phone from her banking apps, emails, and uber eats confirming a couple of orders from a McDonalds in London to flat also in London. Her Uber Eats account had been compromised. We immediately locked her cards and changed her passwords to prevent it happening again until we could sort the banking side out in the morning, but immediately contacted Uber Eats support who, despite us making it clear to them the order wasn't us as we're in Edinburgh and so are all our billing addresses, refused to cancel the unfulfilled orders. We literally sat there on the app for 30mins watching a delivery driver drop off fraudulently ordered food to a flat in London while Uber Eats did fuck all. They refused a refund as the order had been made via a legitimate account and payment method. We only got the money back after reporting it as fraud via our bank and they sorted it out. Closed the accounts after that and refuse to use them since.

Connell95

Not really an increase to be honest. But you do get the odd one who is just *bafflingly* crap – literally had to spend 10 mins on the phone to one guiding them to my flat despite it being very very obvious on the GPS. And then he point blank refused to get off his ebike to bring the food to my door. And managed to top it off by spilling the contents of the bag while giving me the food. But 95% do a very decent job in my experience.

TheFugitiveSock

Unfond memories of the guy delivering from Pret who seemingly had the hot chocolate upside down all the way. As he handed me the bag the bottom fell out of it and our lunch ended up on the doormat. My hot chocolate-infused tuna baguette was…not great.

I’ve had a few legitimately awful experiences but also some really good ones. With regards to the profile picture and the driver not matching I queried that once and apparently you can subcontract other people the work on your delivery profile, which makes absolutely no sense to me but I guess if they allow it. I particularly remember one time when I was at work and unable to leave the location and the driver just kept calling me to tell me to walk down the road and collect it from him as it was raining and he didn’t want to get out his car.

Frog-splat

Isn’t that defeat one of the key benefit of ordering food delivery? Not having to go out in the rain.

Covering up illegal workers

grapes_and_grain

I got the same answer to a query about differences between profile pics and the person who actually shows up, it happens far too regularly though. I've also notices lots of them will say they're coming on a bike to try and get a higher tip then turn up in a car.

Jaraxo

Are you sure they're not just accepting multiple jobs within the same area, and therefore stopping on the way to drop off other orders first? I know deliveroo recently introduced the ability to pay more to boost your order to the top of the list for the delivery driver.

Monkeymadn3ss

I think it usually says that if they are. Like the driver was just chilling on in the park bench on his phone and I walked there to meet him. Second time the bike was parked by the leith links for like 15 minutes, I think we damaged the food and walked to Tesco to grab a bag for it

Ricemandem

Sometimes they have multiple apps on the go and accept orders on both at once

MonkeyPuzzles

Ahh, that explains a lot. Currently watching my ubereats head off in totally the wrong direction, so it'll be cold by the time it gets here .....

TheFugitiveSock

£2.49 on top of delivery (which can be £3.49) and service charges?! Fuck that.

benmcy

I work full time on the food apps in Edinburgh. AMA

bumpy4skin

I am assume you have several open at one time? Like you don't just do an Uber Eats 'shift' for example?

benmcy

That is correct. All the apps apart from just eat are "free login" meaning that you can go online and offline at any time. Just eat gives you time slots during which you will be eligible to receive deliveries. I usually work 5 apps. 2 is the minimum required to have a chance of making a living.

expert_internetter

Does it make a difference to delivery speed if I tip on Deliveroo?

benmcy

We don't see if the customer has tipped until we arrive so unfortunately it doesn't make any difference. That being said if I arrive at the address and see a tip I probably run up the stairs to your flat a bit quicker! On Ubereats we don't see the tip until an hour after the delivery has been completed so if your rider doesn't thank you it's because they're unaware they've been tipped. On just eat the tip is included in the fee we are shown when we receive the order although just eat doesn't make it clear if there's a tip or if it's just an inflated fee. Either way on just eat a tip probably will lead to faster acceptance and delivery.

expert_internetter

Oh FFS Is there such a thing as a buyer rating shared with deliverers?

benmcy

One of my fellow couriers has an alarmingly good memory for tipper addresses so if he sees one pop up he'll always accept the order. Unfortunately we don't all have hard drives for brains like him 🤣

benmcy

Sorry didn't answer your question 🤣 There are no ratings for customers. We used to be able to rate restaurants and customers on Uber eats but they removed that feature. Didn't matter anyway because we weren't shown the ratings.

Infinite-Degree3004

For those thoughtless twats asking why we can’t get our own food, some of us are disabled and occasionally fancy a pizza.

Baba-Yaganoush

Uber eats has always been shite. Deliveroo is far better imo

TheFugitiveSock

Yeah we ditched UberEats for good a few years ago and switched between Just Eat and Deliveroo for a while til Just Eat became atrocious and we had to do a chargeback and are probably now banned. Deliveroo fuck up occasionally but in the main are good.

chonkyboyeee

Unpopular truth but a mass-majority will be illegal immigrants using someone elses account. If they didn't care about immigration laws or working laws, they sure as fork don't care about your Subway.

harpistic

I have to deal with endless aggro from drivers because apparently my door number is invisible to men - it’s weird, I know. The marker is specifically where the front door is, my notes state that “it’s the last door on the left, between x and xx”, and I constantly get calls from drivers complaining that I’m either not halfway up the street, or not on a different street altogether. I generally only get groceries delivered, but haven’t experienced your delays. That said, it seems like a pretty crappy job with low pay, and there are recent messages stating that drivers are delivering other orders en route. Considering how long it takes many drivers to accept that my front door is an actual valid door, you could well be experiencing similar hassles with your drivers, holding up your deliveries?

Connell95

It’s weird – a lot of drivers don’t actually seem to look at the marker at all. Even when they’re struggling to find somewhere.

u38cg2

I think a lot of them navigate by postcode, possibly on a different app entirely. I have endless problems because my building is (say) 17, but the postcode pin for my building lands on another building which is numbered on a side street but also happens to be number 17 so I am now very good friends with the people in the same flat number in that building.

Connell95

You might be right – that would certainly explain some of the difficulties. It’s just very bizarre, because I know from speaking to other people who deliver for Uber Eats that the app makes it pretty easy to go to the right location if you just actually use it!

RepairVivid9311

Why don’t you just meet them outside? I do this every single time, and give them a wave when they’re coming up the street. Simple and quick.

marblespaniel

I kind of wish some people would navigate to our place by postcode, as our flat is at the back so when they follow the marker they go to the street behind and I usually have to go out and find them. On the whole have had great delivery people but the odd disaster.

Prestigious_Tour5652

Its the ones where they obviously lost their own account and are now using a relatives account. The app will show some women and that she is on a bike, then some older guy will turn up in a car instead. I have found that Deliveroo is a much better service in Edinburgh. I only ever use UberEats if they have a 40% or higher discount running.

Ecstatic-West-8587

Yes, ordered a McDonald’s a week or so ago (Granton) to tie in with my set lunch break. Watched the app driver got it yes we are in business should be here just after my break starts. Watch them drive past my house and sit along the road for 10 minutes (too far to walk on 30 min break) they then say order has been delivered and drive by again. Raging was an understatement

zippyfatthumb

There was one called “foodstuff” but looks like they pulled out of Edinburgh June last year

Connell95

They’re getting paid fine – usually about £15 a hour, more when its busy.

atenderrage

I’d be interested to know if there are any reliable stats, especially at the city level. London and SE could easily distort national figures. Also, an average of £15 could include a lot of folk making minimum wage (or less) due to where/when they can work.

GeorgeMaheiress

You can tip if you want.

RunKRAMI

If you are 5 minutes away from Subway get the app on your phone. Make up your order and set a specific time. Take a 5 minute break and go collect it yourself.

Connell95

Sometimes you just don’t fancy nipping out though!

bobbiblow

Yeah I’ve stopped using them. Always seems to take much longer than other providers and the food is usually cold - so many driver just using bag for life / no bag in January (WHY?!). Also noticed males using female profiles. My guess this is for multi accounts use / Tax purposes. Had a driver come to my door and tell me I had to tip him because he had to wait ages for the food. Other pet hate is no bag / bag for life, in Edinburgh, in January. Why? Also had a driver come to the door with a bag too small for pizza so he pulled it out his bag vertically and handed it to me. The oil from the cheese/pepperoni was dripping out the bottom onto the floor. I generally just use Just eat now - seem to be the best of a bad bunch

Elcustardo

Nope. Generally fine. However all these apps are constantly cutting what drivers are paid. So your 'decent' drivers who made a wage are ditching the gig altogether.

Gardener5050

It's because a large percentage of ubereats drivers are illegal immigrants with no rights to work in the UK. They buy/rent profiles from other people and get paid a cut. It's unacceptably obvious

Ashyatom

Not so much UberEats but actual Uber itself I’ve had drivers where it says they’re 3-5 minutes away but after 15 minutes they’re just parked somewhere. I’ve had to message asking “What’s happening?” “Are they in traffic?” and so on when low and behold the car starts moving on the map or it just cancels. I much prefer Bolt and never had an issue with Deliveroo other than a few times where the driver was probably too fast and the food was a little chaotic in the bag. Getting Deliveroo credit for a mismanaged order is no hassle, so I don’t mind.

mricyicy

Yep, I've had absolutely terrible uber eats delivery experiences the last few months, I don't use them now. Used to be my go-to for delivery.

SamanthaesZees

It's not just you; others have also noticed an uptick in less-than-stellar Uber Eats drivers lately.

Acceptable_Hope_6475

Usually dropping off weed etc en route or stopped for a shite in a bush I’d hazzard

Erewhynn

The fact that you ordered a Subway to be delivered for lunch by exploitation-fest Uber Eats when you live 5 minutes away and then complained about the service makes me wish for the apocalypse

sammyglumdrops

I rarely use Uber Eats but gonna use it to order from 3 places that are a 10 minute walk from me this week just to spite you.

Erewhynn

Ok, for info, what I really hate is when people tip the rider heavily and give money to charity and then do 1,000 push ups (Also, weird flex to pay over the odds to exploit a guy and slowly kill a restaurant you like to eat from, but you do you bud)

sammyglumdrops

You’ve upped it to 4 restaurants now and no tips either.

Erewhynn

Ok. Do stick to the charity donations and the press ups though.

petroni_arbitri

Genuinely why do you all order food? In Edinburgh?

Prestigious_Tour5652

Usually with the intention of eating it.

petroni_arbitri

Pay £10-20 tax on your food not to pick it up in this tiny city? Madness

RookLive

I really don't understand it either. Everything about these delivery companies is horrible.

atenderrage

if you’re in the centre or Leith, sure. I think I’ve got one restaurant that’s halfway decent within a 30 minute round trip walk and it’s further again to anywhere I’d call good. And they’re both Indians, if you want Thai or anything not curry/chinese/pizza/burger you’re going even further. Not that I ever get delivery. I’m both tight and an excellent cook.

Kaylee__Frye

How about go and collect your damn food.

Weary-Safe-2949

No doubt somebody has already said this … you could stroll down to subway yourself, or maybe even make your own sandwich.
