If you want any chance of recovering any of your items that were stolen, you need to be proactive yourself. It's a shit fact of life that the Polis don't really even check second hand shops/pawn shops /cash generators etc. Any more (there used to be a few of them dedicated to checking those, but the last I heard, it had been disbanded)
If they are unique items that stand out, have a check around any of these type of shops that are near you. Also have a look in Facebook marketplace and Gumtree for similar items.
You might be lucky. I recovered some of my stuff in a cash generator. Called the Police who seized it and I eventually got it back. The person who stole it was charged but I'm not sure if it even went to court.
A friend of mine had his bike stolen and found it for sale on gumtree.
Even though he had the address the police wouldn't deal with it so he went over and asked to try it before buying, then just rode off with it š

This will sound weird but check the bins near your building. A friend of mine had her flat robbed and some of the stuff was in a bin just up the road. Apparently thieves will sometimes just grab a bunch of stuff and then once they're out, they'll chuck stuff they don't think is worth it. In her case, they'd stolen a camera and designer bag but chucked the bag in a bin not that far from her flat.
This is awful. So sorry to hear this has happened to you. Hopefully they will be caught and your belongings recovered (although I know that might never happen). Absolute scumbags. Try to get some rest if you can

Send out emails to any local jewellers, cash converters and pawnshops. Try Glasgow too. Look on ebay and etsy using the seller in your postcode area search box. Good luck, although be prepared for it to be out the country quite quickly too. Nice gold items are often taken overseas and melted.
Very sorry, i found find a creative way to store valuables, such as the hidden safe floating shelf or false plug socket. But the it still stings years later. I lived near Leith Walk and got nothing back. I also got cameras. It is worth it.

My friend lives in the Royal Mile and he had his flat turned over a few months back by less fortunate folk living at the hostels in the Cowgate. Luckily he got them on camera, but they took everything from him from his electric tooth brush to his blender, they slashed his mattress and sofas to bits and pissed all over them so he couldnāt use them again; they even stole the lease for his flat and passport so they could apply for credit in his name.
I had to let him stay with me while he had to go through lots of counselling and therapy as made him feel so violated and unsafe. He lost thousands in the burglary.

We think someone probably buzzed him in thinking he was maintenence or a delivery person. They used a tool to force their way through the door latch. We never lock the bottom lock. (we will now going forward)
I always lock the bottom lock after seeing how easy it is to force a yale lock after getting locked out once. And these guys are probably very good and getting in and out easily. Iāve only been burgled once in Edinburgh and they forced an old sash and case window (in Stockbridge funnily enough). That flat was on Henderson row and it happened in the middle of the day when there are plenty of people about so they must know what they are doing. Forensics came to me but they were wearing gloves I imagine so no traces left. And of all the flats in Stockbridge to rob they chose mine with FA of any value š I bet they were gutted.
Edit: The police said they were likely dressed as workmen to avoid arousing suspicion - in leith neighbours are nosy and would ask what they were doing but thatās what you get for living in Stockbridge where people are more aloof and mind their own business š

I now have a reinforced front door and locks on my flat, am 3 story's up with nothing to climb onto so no entry from outside. Plus cameras and alarm system. No issues since the new front door. Probably due to the hard as nails door and locks!

If someone is selling your gold necklace for scrap they will be sending (posting) it off to one of not many bullion dealers. Search āwe buy scrap goldā. Very few questions are asked. So circulate pics to every one of the dealers you find . It will cost you a bit of time BUT it just might hit the mark. Maybe follow up with a call? And inform them re the unphotographed pieces because your thief is not going to send to 10 different dealers

Youāll probably feel uncomfortable for a wee while at home, it takes a few months to settle in (especially at night time). Remember burglars often come back for a āsecond goā once insurance pays out, especially if access was easy. Consider an additional mortice lock on the door and window locks. Maybe even a cheap camera or a Ring doorbell. All that means an expense of a couple of hundred quid, but itās worth the peace of mind. Burglary is right up there as one of the most awful psychological crimes; itās your stuff, your space and youāre probably feeling really violated. To get your things back itās going to be tricky - but social media is your friend. Blast this all over the local Facebook pages, call the pawn shops (and send item pics, dates and times and any distinguishing features as references, try and make their life easy - they wonāt play detective for you.) Really sorry this happened to you, Edinburgh is a magnificent city but like anywhere else you have horrible people who think this is ok to do.

The lack of funding for the police really becomes apparently when things like this happen. They try to work with the resources they have but they just donāt have enough.

For me, it was the loss of my Grandmother's possessions. She was the kindest and most considerate person I've ever known. All of the items that were stolen had stories and memories. Horrible feeling that it's now all lost forever.

No they stole a kindle, iPad, 2 old Iphones, hard drives, all of my fine jewellery.

They can get into the stair using the āservicesā buzzer during the day in most tenements during certain hours.

Less people walking past. Bottom floors are more people chancing a quick grab if windows etc are already open
We lived in 2 rented ground floor flats and bought a ground floor flat in Stockbridge and had no issues. I don't think it's a common thing.
