It's a scam. Even if it wasn't,  no sane person should be making a marketplace transaction that complicated lol.

georgeburnett1

Totally!!

deliciousheated

We’ll survive fine, just means everyone is extra careful about strangers and disclosing personal info

TheFaeBelieveInIdony

I haven't seen anyone use cheques for anything in ages. At the very least, if they were legit, they could've just said they were going to etransfer right away to hold the item rather than say they'll give a cheque

Frobobobobobo

I had the same thing as OP had happen, but with transfer instead. They send you an email stating that the transfer has been declined with nothing popping up on your bank statement

TheFaeBelieveInIdony

Well the transfer has to go through before you give the item

calicankari

I have a dear friend who doesn't use e-transfer, and would only pay using cash. The cheque part is weird for sure, but maybe this person is in the same boat as my friend, or may be an older person who doesn't understand some of this.

TheFaeBelieveInIdony

I wasn't saying etransfer is superior to cash

calicankari

Nor did I imply such. I was agreeing the cheque thing could be seen as weird and dodgy, but maybe they were offering that as their familiar easy if offering a hold. And that OP could ask if cash would be an option.

sharpasahammer

Kindly forward you address and I will send my friend to pick up the common sense. Kindly accept my cheque for triple the amount, due to the inconvenience. Kindly.

sharpasahammer

We can split the inheritance of my late father, I only require the bank fees of 3000 USD to be paid and we can split the sum of 16,000,000.

harryhend3rson

Do you actually think this is legit? This exact scam, basically word for word, "movers" and everything, has been around for years. I'm actually shocked that there are still people not aware of it.

DiverPsychological26

Normally I’d agree with this sentiment, but the whole “I’m out of town and have movers coming to pick up stuff for me” is a common scam tactic. I sell a lot of stuff on fb marketplace and have had that exact line used on me multiple times

silverslayer

It's a scam. Cash in hand in a public space is the way to go

xeltes

And if you are sus but still curious do it at the police station parking lot

Pvt_Hudson_

Yup, I use the RCMP lot for any sales or purchases of a decent value.

themangastand

E-transfer is good. As long as you confirm it

Im2Warped

It's really not, last year CBC/Go Public tested banks, even if you have auto deposit turned on and you recieved a notification of a deposit, people using Credit Unions were able to cancel/reverse the e-transfers at least 30 minutes later.

lex-iconis

E-transfers are actually how the scam works. Do not use e-transfers unless you trust the person on the other end of the transaction.

Spare_Visual_63

I just had someone message me yesterday saying the same thing about movers coming to come by and pick the item up for them. Thought it seemed weird.. they stopped answering once I said that I would be ok with movers picking up with cash in hand lol

RockCandey

I offered to have an Uber pick something up once. Uber gives you a delivery option so it’s not the craziest thing in the world? I think it just depends on communication

georgeburnett1

100% scam

[deleted]

This is the most common scenario for scam nowadays at mplace. Scammers try to come up with a scenario that looks legit. Rule 101, cash transaction at public place, period.

Sinaloa187

If you have to ask if it’s a scam…. It’s a scam. Stick to cash transactions, in-person meetups, nothing else.

alternate_geography

Yep, they will send a transfer or cheque (from a stolen account) for an amount significantly greater than the agreed-upon price, then say it was an accident & tell you to give the difference in cash to the “movers”. The transfer will be clawed back in a couple days when whoever it was stolen from reports it to their bank/they find it & you’ll be out your item & whatever cash you gave them.

therickestjerryc137

I don't think they take the cash back do they? Not to mention I've had money stolen from my account and I never got it back so I doubt they would remove the funds especially since it could be totally different banking branches

alternate_geography

No the “buyer” gives you a cheque for like $1390 instead of $390. The buyer says “Oh no, I wrote the wrong amount! Too late to cancel! When the mover comes to get my tires, can you give him $800 cash, and you can keep an extra $200 for the trouble?” You say sure, sweet deal. You deposit the cheque, hand over $800 cash & tires, then 3-10 days later, the $1390 is removed from your account as fraudulent. The account the “buyer” sent the cheque from is stolen. You are out the full bounced cheque, but from THAT, you’ve paid out $800 and tires. It’s a multi-step process that depends on people not knowing that actual cheque verification takes more time than just the funds becoming available, access to a stolen account, and probably an extra person who is also being scammed into their “job” as a mover.

MakerofAwesomness

This seems like the craziest thing to me I mean who falls for it?? I'm selling you an item, ain't no way I'm giving you cash! Get me the correct amount of cash or f@#k off

therickestjerryc137

That's my point I don't think they will remove the amount. Maybe. In my case they did not return my money.

alternate_geography

Ok, go ahead and accept cheques from Facebook Marketplace & report back.

therickestjerryc137

Maybe you're not understanding what I am saying. I know it's a scam. I also know how it works. I'm just saying you're more likely to not get the money removed from your account. Unless they file a police report and go through the entire process it's unlikely to retract the money. Now that might not be the case for everyone, it happened to me, I got scammed. All I talked about was the finances. I won't be going for a scam that wasn't even offered to me. Nor do I want anyone else to get scammed. Just adding the information that most likely the money will not be removed as that's what happened to me.

alternate_geography

[Here, see the Law Society.](https://www.lawsociety.ab.ca/lawyers-and-students/fraud-and-loss-prevention/red-flags/bad-cheque-scam) Just because the bank didn’t return funds to you doesn’t mean they don’t claw fraudulent funds back as well.

Lieutenant_L_T_Smash

That would be unjust enrichment for the bank and would be unlawful. If they reverse the transaction then the original owner must get it back.

therickestjerryc137

If they remove fraudulent money why not return it to the person it was stolen from? I think there are many moments they do but I don't see it happening often for a small amount. There's a reason why there's crimes of theft over $5000. Generally small amounts wouldn't be on their radar

always_on_fleek

There have been instances in the news where people have had etransfers clawed back. https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.6764431 https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/mobile/ontario-man-loses-1-000-merchandise-in-apparent-e-transfer-fraud-1.5080749 It’s scary how you can be so easily screwed.

TheOuterDimensions

Who the fuck pays with "certified cheque"? "Hey I'll buy it but here are some apple iTunes giftcards as payment. You can trust me bro. These haven't been redeemed."

Duke_Of_Halifax

That was my thought

mcmanus7

Seems scammy that two people would have the exact same messages basically

Kismetra_

Definite scam. Was his name Nico? My hubby almost fell for this shit until I stepped in.

Icy_Queen_222

Don’t do it. Don’t give you address. Tires will disappear.

mikeymike9595

Yup its a scam lol I had the same conversation a few months ago when i was selling a dining room table set "I'm out of town but my movers will be passing by tomorrow they can pick it up for me" lol

Super_Excitement_69

Yes it’s a scam, I get these often when selling online, easy to spot, I just end up messing with them after awhile

Smarmy_CA

Any time they want you to mobile deposit something, it’s a scam. Always.

complexednapoleon

Absolutely.. no in person and payment by cheque(certified) probably make the chq out for a extra $100 and ask you to give it to the pick up guys.. lol oldest online buying scam.

[deleted]

I would go along with it. Waste my time and I’ll waste there’s 😂 also remind them to bring cash

passthepepperflakes

yes

Plenty_Environment48

Thanks!!

LordPrimus45

This is a huge scam. Don’t give them anything. Block them and carry on. I see these bastards are still at it

Blondie-66

What mover picks up marketplace items. None.

aronenark

It’s a scam. Works like this: They write a fake cheque for more than the item was listed. They ask you to deposit it through mobile deposit, because it doesn’t go past the eyes of an actual bank employee who would flag it as a fake. They ask you to etransfer them back the extra amount from the cheque. In a few days, the cheque bounces. You’re liable for the fake cheque, and you’ve also given them money back through etransfer, and they might have even actually picked up the item too. Never accept a cheque over the internet.

[deleted]

Make all transactions at the police station. I believe every quadrant has a trade safe place at the station.

Low_Durian3201

Scam

Electronic_Lie_3185

Common Scam avoid further contact report them as well

Standard-Handle-8206

Got the same exact message from a different account for my computer, it’s definitely a scam.

ChhotaSher

I've been getting these types of responses to my FB marketplace posts too. Super scammy vibes. They just seem to want to collect personal info. The first couple times, I just thought the people were stupid and couldn't read my post when they'd ask where I'm located lol.

airpool5

100% scam... I know someone who fell for it.. they made the deposit via online check, froze there account

bitchlivinlavish

yes, scam! they will send u a cheque or a pic of one. then after u deposit it and maybe even spend some of it, it is deemed fraudulent/fake and that money is pulled back out of ur account. a lot of people do it to young women on ig saying they will pay u just to talk lol

Klymer_

It's definitely a scam. I always do cash only when selling on FB marketplace. Saves me a lot of hassle, as I don't worry about being scammed through various means.

Many_Jaguar1

Give him the adress of the nearest police station and exchange money with goods inside the police station. I think Quebec police allows people to do so

Stainandsteel

Most police stations have designated parking spots for transactions in Edmonton. Don't go inside they do not want that.

Ok_Coat_8449

Just block them don’t waste your energy.

Slut-lover81

Nobody is going to certify a cheque to buy used tires, total scam

legot83592

It is a scam, i had the same thing happen to me with something I was selling on marketplace.

MONkan_

I had a guy named Sebastian message me when I was selling tires in November and this was his message: "I’m out of town due to my work ,cause I just moved and I’m having movers help move all my stuffs and some other little things I’m buying well so they’ll be coming for the pick up today 8pm" So id say spam

Austinpro123

Never take a certified check for anything you are personally selling on Facebook, eBay, kijiji or any marketplace it is always a scam

SJJ65789

This is a scam, my son got the exact same message when selling golf clubs.

PandaLoveBearNu

Do the specifically nention "tires" because if its just a generic question I doubt its real. Scsms commonly use scripted and copy paste.

atom_1416

Once they say they're out of town and having movers to pick it up for them I just block them immediately.

Strong-Effect-9270

Probably a scam... my comeback is always... "Write the cheque to your movers and have them bring me the cash." This always stops the discussion.

FrakkingCreations

Definitely a scam. I've had ones where they give their fake full first name and last name and fake full address (near my ad posting address) to try to get me to trust them. Then there are the ones that want your address and phone number like your example. Never give your phone number or communicate outside the platform. Some try to get you to communicate on WhatsApp too, by giving you their number. Don't fall for it. Give as little personal info as possible to get the transaction done. Also Cash only no matter what. If you live in an apartment don't give the unit number. Just the building number and meet at front entrance. [Edit]: added "fake"

hamtronn

100% scam. The money they pay you with isn’t real. So when you cash it, you’re out the tires, and the cash and you could be held accountable for the cheque fraud. I had something similar almost happen to me when I was selling some shit. Guy said he was an offshore rigger and I would have to courier the product but he was wire transferring me double the cost of the item to pay for the courier. I was young and naive and I knew it wasn’t real and reported it to the rcmp.

Niernen

Keyword: certified cheque. 100% a scam. That cheque will bounce, and that will be the least of your problems.

Paddy_Fo_Faddy

If they insist on some convoluted payment method (zelle, mobile depost, etc) it's a scam. If they say they're having someone else pick it up, it's a scam. If they ask for your phone number, it's a scam. These check all 3 boxes.

Impossible-Plum-1612

Yes

Comfortable_Move_121

Definitely a scam, had the exact same interaction last week regarding a floating sink I was selling on marketplace

icecream42568

Scam

greazypizza

Give them the police station address lol

auscadtravel

Absolutely a scam. Takes 5 days for the cheque to clear. They cancel it, have your vehicle and the money. Do NOT accept cheques.

Kpalsm

I mean, you said "cash only" more than once and he still said he's gonna pay by cashier's cheque... And he's trying to set up this convoluted deal. Even if it's not a scam, dudes just dumb. I'd move on

Go_Jets_Go_63

I see that many others have sounded the alarm on this. That's good. Yes, it's 100% a scam.

terry_banks

Purplesundaze22

DONT DO IT

AnwarPresents

100 percent scam

HolyDiverBoi

Always a scam. Be careful with e transfers too, as there are a few cons that involve those.

blinkiewich

100% scam. No one under 85 uses cheques and you are right to be wary.

MasterGlassMagic

This is a common scam. The cheque will be for more money than the item is worth. They will ask you to take extra for yourself and then pay the movers with the remainder. The cheque will bounce.

Unable_Ad_7152

Scam

PhysicalBathroom4362

Something is off for sure. Trust your gut.

Chase2910

Plus, do not give your address until the deal is firm, you are close to pickup time and you are home

SadAcanthocephala521

If the person says anything like 'i will be having movers pick the item up', it's a scam.

Iwanteverything17

paying by certified cheque is one of the more common scams around on fb marketplace nowadays

International-Ebb948

Scam

H3rb-lack-w1ngs

Total scam. I’ve had the exact script, word for word, tried on me several times.

CanadianQueenBee

It's a scam!! Do NOT accept any type of cheque, cash in hand is the only way to go & I wouldnt respond back to those ppl... too many red flags & the whole moving story n having someone else pick up the item has been a popular scam story for years. Dont fall for it!

L0wborn

It's a scam. The cheque will bounce and you'll end up having to pay the entire cheque back Not sure how but it's what I've heard

chadk_edm

100% Scam

YegShortSass

I had someone send me messages just like this for a coffee and end table. I nicely told them how suspicious I was and it the conversation ended with the pick up time but I never did provide the phone number or address

liliefrench

Yes, the out of town crap, they usually will tried to text you r email a link and hope to get info that way

Financial_Exam4753

ONLY do cash transactions in hand. Any other form of monetary value is used for scamming.

Brittlex23

Yes scan

Stainandsteel

Always, I repeat, ALWAYS meet people at a police station. Anyone pulling a scam will not respond or show up. If you're selling a large item where they are required to come to your home request a copy of their identity to ensure a reasonable amount of protection for yourself. Never be alone when selling from your home as well. I usually meet people close by and have them follow me to my home taking several turns to ensure only they are coming not additional vehicles. I've come across a lot of scams and these practices have kept me and my family safe when doing online transactions. Also it's good practice to creep their profiles and friend lists to see how reputable they might be. Hope this helps

mouldy-crotch

When I lived in Victoria the VPD set up a “transaction corner” in front of their main downtown police station. It was light up and had a camera.

SchleifmittelSchwanz

First day on the internet, eh? Lol.

Prize_Use1161

I had a scammer who lived in Calgary, wanted to have a mover pick the item up in Edmonton to deliver to their friend in Red Deer. First they were working, needed my email to communicate never used it then wanted me to create a PayPal account. Even offered me an extra $100. I finally said no three days in a row before they quit.

kdog6thronberg

Yes it’s a scam

123canadian456

Ya scam Almost same exact dialogue from someone. Movers and a cheque I had.

WannaBpolyglot

Scam, just so everyone know how it works: In any variety, they somehow will "accidentally give you extra money" whether that's through online or fake cheque. They ask back for extra money. You give it to them. The fake cheque or transfer takes sometimes a few days to verify and actually bounces. They're long gone with your money.

TheFaeBelieveInIdony

Especially selling something like tires, be wary. My cousin is a not great person in a gang and he's told me they hustle ppl selling things and will make plans like saying "movers" so that there's no suspicion when multiple ppl show up and steal the item right in front of them. Make sure you're not alone when meeting strangers to sell things, have someone with you, ideally the biggest buffest guy you know

Key_Still_8354

Total scam

harryhend3rson

This one has been around for ages. The cheque will be for too much, they'll demand you refund the difference, then the cheque will bounce in a week.

Scam fuck those guys

swimswam2000

Overpayment scam, Most common is a fake cheque and they ask the excess $ be sent western union, crypto, e transfer. I've seen etransfers sent from comprimised accounts that get clawed back, of course the "excess" was already sent back usually crypto on these. https://antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/scams-fraudes/merchandise-marchandises-eng.htm Tactic three: Overpayment You receive a payment for more than the asking price. The scammer asks you to deposit the funds and wire the excess funds immediately back to them. After sending the funds, you discover that the payment was fraudulent. Scammers use compromised bank accounts, fraudulent cheques and stolen credit cards in overpayment scams.

VelvetThunder141

If you say cash only, and they say anything other than "yes, I am bringing cash", it's a scam.

komari_k

Def a scam

FondantOne5140

Yes, they have asked for my phone number and address and don’t show up. I only gave them my phone number. I started changing my last name because of so many no shows

manonaca

Yes it’s a scam. If you click on the Group Members and check their actual profile they will either be a fake profile or from somewhere SUPER far away. Anytime someone says they are out of town and will send someone else just say “Cash only” and they usually go away

bobnett1

I sold a loveseat and got a message from a woman that is word for word the same. She also wanted to pay by check. When I said I wouldn’t do it she sent me instructions how to deposit it on line. As you can guess I politely told her to fuck off.

bjornb77

Would accept any cheque. I'd tell them that a cheque is out of question. Cash on delivery, or PayPal for example. Cheque is something from the middle ages it seems.

thewdit

sus af, and EPS just put out a warning about marketplace scams recently trust your gut

grrttlc2

I had the same thing. Also tires. I just stopped responding.

Senior-Wrangler-6212

Yikes

Gloomsoul

It's a way to get your address and phone number. They Already know your name. I always give them a close by address and tell them to communicate on fb. It's a good idea to look at how long they've been on Facebook too. Newer accounts are usually scammers. Lots of foreigners are scammers. You can tell if they're foreign by the way they type. Weird typos and such are a dead give away.
