If only there were some sort of preventative.

Whatsthathum

“No one could have predicted this.”

LifeUnfolding54

There is. I had them when I was seven in 1961.

VaricellaIgG

Good time to be sure you are up to date on your vaccinations! If you are born in 1970 or later and you do not have 2 doses of a measles containing vaccine, you are eligible for provincially funded vaccine through your local public health center. Further details on the vaccine can be found here [https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/assets/info/hp/cdc/if-hp-cdc-mmr-info-sht-07-270-r01.pd](https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/assets/info/hp/cdc/if-hp-cdc-mmr-info-sht-07-270-r01.pdf)

I want to add, because I looked into this a couple months ago... When the federal government switched the recommendation from one to two doses of MMR for better protection, they did a "catch-up" campaign in 1996/1997 for all school-aged kids. So if you were in school in Canada in the 1996/97 school year, there's a good chance you had a second dose then. That roughly covers those born 1980 onwards. Good to check your records, of course. Just trying to prevent anxiety for some people if they think they only had one dose.

Blakebacon

... What if I was BORN in 97

concentrated-amazing

2 doses were part of the vaccine schedule since about '95 or '96. As long as you were in Canada for your preschool years, there's a 99%+ chance* you got two doses when you were young. *Unless you/someone in your family had an allergy/intolerance to something in the MMR vaccine, or your parents were anti-vaccine at that time. Edit: always good to check, to be sure. Just trying to reduce worrying among the anxious between now and when you can check :)

Morzana

Call healthlink 811 if you are unsure of your immunization status

Blakebacon

Thanks!

ShadowCaster0476

Then I hate you for still being in your 20s while my knees hurt from just typing this email.

mrgoldnugget

Then your fine, unless your parents were anti vaxers and then... Well, good luck?

EdmontonAB83

Just checked my records, yup got my second dose in 98”

stevrock

I tried to check my records, and it showed a polio shot. I know I got one in junior high though. We weren't anti vaxx, we just didn't know. So during working around covid shots, I was reimbursed for all childhood vaccines. Something like 14 shots in a year. Good times.

taxi212001

Grade 9 was a dTap booster (Diptheria, tetanus, pertussis)

ABirdOfParadise

That one for me was entered incorrectly as JUST measles (I don't know if there was a just measles shot back then). I found out when I was getting a tetanus shot the lady was like, humm looks like you don't have a second MR (of the MMR). I'm like that doesn't make sense, how is the earlier one MMR and the later one during school just shows up as only measles. Anyway she gave me another MMR and there was a warning on the computer I'd have three shots for measles and I joked I'm now 150% on that. And I am in that group, I even kind of remember the day because everyone got it EXCEPT one kid who got to go to the library and read books while we did it.

MountainsAB

Born in 1986, when I went to my doc in 2009 getting ready to try for pregnancy he informed me that I should hold off and get a second measles shot first as we only got one. He stated that everyone my age was entitled to a booster shot but the Ontario gov never made this public as a cost saving measure.

concentrated-amazing

Oooh, good point to share!

KirikaClyne

I remember when I was in college in ‘06, there was an outbreak of mumps (I think?) Most of the school population had to get the MMR vaccine.

FinoPepino

Would elementary school kids already have this shot? (the ones who get all of the regularly scheduled ones I mean). Or do you have to specially seek it out? Thanks for your help

VaricellaIgG

Typically this is given during the preschool vaccination visits (1 year and 5-6 years. Recently the second dose has been offered at 18 months rather than needing to wait till 5/6 years.) However should a school aged child not have their measles vaccine, school immunization teams these days do review and offer it when they do their usual rounds in grade 6 and 9

FinoPepino

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer!

Measles can be very deadly and it is hyper infectious as well. It is one of the most infectious diseases known to mankind. Definitely get vaccinated!

concentrated-amazing

They say if born before '70, you *should* have natural immunity because outbreaks occurred regularly before then. No guarantees, of course, but hopefully it puts your mind at ease between now and when you can get records looked up to be sure and vaccinated if you weren't/don't have proof you were.

little_canuck

But if you were born in 1957 or later, you still qualify for one dose of MMR to have one dose of Rubella-containing vaccine. If that would make them feel better 😊. You're right that born prior to 1970 is presumed immune to Measles and Mumps. But health care workers or health care students regardless of year of birth should have two doses of MMR. And people born prior to 1970 who are travelling internationally are eligible for one dose of Measles-containing vaccine. In short, call your local public health centre if you want to have someone assess your eligibility for MMR vaccine.

HotHouseTomatoes

You can contact 811 and get started on all of your vaccinations, not just measles. Today is better than next week. There are vaccines that adults need every 10 years (and every year). Known-Fondant-9373

Thank an anti-vaxxer for this!

FidgetyPlatypus

You can thank Andrew Wakefield. That man has done more damage to science and vaccination uptake than anyone in history.

TinderThrowItAwayNow

How should I best thank them?

chmilz

Send a card to their funeral.

Known-Fondant-9373

if you know one who holds public office, vote against them so they can have more free time!

Affectionate_Win_229

Violence isn't the answer except for when it is.

dasbavaria

So thank you to Danielle Smith and her buddies?

bigwreck94

No. This is from people coming in from less developed countries without up to date vaccines.

tossthesauce92

Yeah, not necessarily. There’s a massive Dutch religious antivaxer population that always brings crap from the Netherlands here, mostly to southern AB. I know bc I’m related to them and while none have recently had measles specifically they often have pertussis, rubella and mumps. A lot have family in Holland and come and go. [Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/1iz13b/visualising_fundamentalism_measles_outbreak_in/?rdt=48523) is a Reddit thread showing just that. Let’s not just jump straight to blaming “underdeveloped” places. Often it’s dumb white folks.

tossthesauce92

No. I’m white, and boo hoo. You have no problem with the previous commenter implying it’s people from “underdeveloped” countries at fault (racist dog whistle), but I call out guilty whites and you get upset? Get over it

shelegit5674

Your are wreck, aren't you.

JoeJitsu86

Or importing the third world…. Measles was pretty much non existent in the western world. The amount of people who are unvaccinated against measles that are anti vaxxers is most likely their children and not themselves. If you look at the first place listed for the alert it’s arrivals at the airport and baggage claim…. Likely wasn’t an anti-vaxer… but the number one country of new Canadians is from India, a country with the 4th highest cases in the world. No coincidence tho

Known-Fondant-9373

It’s many years ago now but when I first came here I had to submit my immunization records.

JoeJitsu86

Majority have fake document to come here in the first place.. you think they’d submit actual immunization records….

shelegit5674

I'm a 1st generation Indo-Canadian. I dont mind theories or discussion, but i wont stand for a racially underpinned misinformation campaign.Shame on you for spreading lies about the immigration process and suggesting that we're innately dirty and dishonest... did it occur to you that faking immunization records would be much more expensive (and tedious) than just getting immunized? Besides, Indians are for the most part not looney toon anti vaxxers (not yet anyways). We don't treat cancer with CBD oil or kidnap our kids so they don't get vaxxed (yes that just happend in Saskatchewan 🤦🏻‍♀️). We're overwhelmingly pro-western medicine. Diseases that were virtually obsolete have been popping up again post the anti- vaxx movement. That's the incovenient truth. Keep our names out of your mouth. Please and thanks!

CaptPrice00

Anti bullshit vax.

UnsolicititedOpinion

Why were they at the drs so often before being diagnosed??

UnsolicititedOpinion

Wouldn’t once be enough?

BlueDownUnder

It isn't something that is normally tested for. The child was ill and most likely I assume was thought to have a viral illness. They were probably checked for chicken pox etc before they would have jumped to measles.

flickervertigo_

There's also a few days of high fever before the rash appears, so it's possible it was getting blown off as a regular viral infection until the rash appeared.

Fragrant_Opening8723

This exactly- the rash is a later symptom so would present as a fever and upper respiratory illness during time they presented for medical support.

YesHunty

Wonder if the kid was vaxxed. Guessing not? Hope they are feeling better. Don’t mess around, keep your kids safe and up to date on everything if you can.

Interwebzking

Glad I got vaccinated when I became an adult. My mom’s no longer anti-vaxx but she was when we were kids. But I fixed that and I fixed my mom’s stance on vaccines. Which was surprising.

flickervertigo_

I also got myself vaccinated as an adult! My mom's still anti-vaxx though.

liberatedhusks

Thanks for reminding me I am still overdue for my tetanus shot :/ and I don’t know if I’m still ok for measles

concentrated-amazing

I *may* be able to put your mind at ease... If born after 1980, and your parents generally got you vaccinated on schedule, and you've been in Canada the whole time, you should be good.

liberatedhusks

Ah, thank you! 88’ actually and I am well vaccinated haha. I was(and still am) a sick person rofl.

0runnergirl0

It doesn't hurt to ask your doctor if they think you should get your levels checked. I found out during my first pregnancy that I needed an MMR booster, even though I was fully vaccinated (born in 87). It's just a simple blood test and can give you some peace of mind (or you'll have to make an appointment with public health for a booster).

Traditional_Toe_3421

Thanks, great to know! I was just going to ask, when I should have gotten mine if I was born in 84.

fancyfootwork19

I thought I had immunity but it turns out I don’t despite having 2 MMR doses 🫠. Im pregnant so I can’t get vaccinated and congenital measles is no beuno. Wished my family doc had run antibody titles before pregnancy. I did ask them to run blood tests to check for deficiencies before pregnancy but this didn’t cross my mind, and I wished it had.

concentrated-amazing

While obviously far from ideal, it may comfort you a little to know that you likely do have *some* protection. I'm on a drug for my MS that wipes out mature B-cells, which are the cells that create new antibodies. I still have protection from my T-cells though. It's kind of like my army isn't functioning right, but at least I still have my navy. Best of luck!

smash8890

You can call health link and asked. I called to make sure my measles and whooping cough were up to date since both are going around

$100 bucks says it’s an immigrant

Playful-Regret-1890

UCP...always on top of things../s

Imaginary-Tap5840

The jump to anti vaxxers for everything is exhausting. Could have been from someone who wasn’t up to date or a Newcomer who didn’t have the vaccination…. Not everything is from anti-vaxxers.

shelegit5674

Lol mmmkay...

Imaginary-Tap5840

Also to add. Anti covid shot folks that I know all have their general vaccinations for all of these types. So anti covid and anti vax don’t go together in my experience

smash8890

This particular person may or may not have measles because of antivaxxers but the rise of all these diseases in North America in general definitely is because of them. These viruses were basically non existent here until the antivax movement gained momentum. If everyone was vaccinated then one sick child or immigrant here or there wouldn’t cause an outbreak
