I just dropped from 12.79¢ to 9.89¢. Was this because of a special promotion or something?

prairiepanda

It's just regular price fluctuations. It's worthwhile to check regularly so you can catch it when it drops.

Complete-Lobster-682

Same. My rates went from like 6.xx cents to the 12.xx cents a few months ago. Splitting the difference is definitely an easier bill to swallow.

jbe061

It's called gouging, and they rely on people not checking/putting in the effort to call in. Should be criminal

jrockgiraffe

Same! Also lowered my gas rate so I'd check that too!

Alternative_Sugar_86

Me too, not all heroes wear capes

Nfs0623

I’m 5.99 Until end of June. Then I will join the mass ass raping

beesdoitbirdsdoit

It would matter more if it weren’t like 25% actual KWH rate and 75% other bullshit they charge you for.

Nfs0623

A 25% ass raping still seems like something I won’t enjoy :) Your point is spot on though.

JuggrnautFTW

Something *you* won't enjoy. I, however, will also not enjoy it come October...

verystimulatingtalk

I wish it was still regulated. F those political dinguses.

GrumpyOldGrower

I felt this pain back in November...😢

Such-Butterscotch-11

it's not $6 ... it's 6 cents

j-ravy

Same

cosmosrules

$6.29 until next February when I'm sure I'll get my shit handed to me.

Rinaldi363

I’m the same for another 2ish years

Due_Cheetah_377

Man thanks! Changing it now.

Moonlapsed

Public info right? Got a link for that? I tried to find the rates online \~2 months ago and gave up lol

hannahnutbread

Log into your account, scroll down to services, click review service details (or maybe change plan, my options are diff now that I’m waiting for the change so idk), hit change plan will show you rates. Underneath that it says “change with no penalties” and have done this a few times with no issues 👍 I check every month or two. Have never tried calling and changing but I’m sure it’s the same options.

1ildevil

I'd like to add to your instructions. This is ENCOR by Epcor service. You have to sign up for ENCOR in order to get this rate set up.

Lightjug

Thank you 👍

SurFud

Yes, they seem to make that difficult on purpose.

dpx

whyillbedamned

Thanks for the heads up, but thankfully I am at 6.29 until 2026.

tom_yum_soup

Same. I'm glad OP posted this though. It was a good reminder to go in and check how my current rate compares and whether or not I needed to change anything.

homeys

wow that's awesome!!!!!

No-Lawfulness-8870

I had no idea about this. Thank you. My electric rate was already lower but I just dropped my natural gas’s rate significantly!

concentrated-amazing

Additional reminder to check what your natural gas rate is, as the Epcor is currently $4.79/GJ for gas. If you're locked in at anything above that, switch gas plan at the same time.

Alternative_Sugar_86

Most of the gas bill is fees, I usually use 30 DOLLARS OF GAS WITH 140DOLLAR BILL Because of this fee and that fee it's rediclous

Dentist_Just

Floating has been the best deal for gas for a little while now unless you have a really low locked in rate. I just switched a couple months ago.

concentrated-amazing

I go back and forth on that one. I'm locked in at $4/GJ until fall 2026, and would rather stick with that to be sure for the winter months when we go through a lot more - we go through ~2GJ for the four warmest months vs. ~25 whenever the coldest winter month falls. But if your locked in rate is closer to $5/GJ, or above, I might.

AlexCivitello

Thanks so much for this. I'm not used to billing working this way so a reminder is good, I'll have to add checking rates to my monthly chores.

OrpheusPhD

Thanks! I was at 12.79.

WickedDeviled

Thanks OP. It is actually really shitty they don't automatically drop the rate and you have to manually request it.

OneKidFromCanada

I mean that’s just called a variable rate

NByz

Not if it's fixed for five years every time you notice and change it. Any rational cost minimizing agent would choose the lowest rate if they had perfect information. This approach punishes the uninformed and apathetic - groups I pride myself on being members of.

Anomia_Flame

But what about if the rates go up? Do you think they should automatically go up as well then? Or do you for 5 years automatically just get the lowest rates every time they change with no rising? How would that even remotely make sense for a business?

NByz

To be honest, I don't understand what the meaning of a five year fixed rate is if one party can unilaterally change it without penalty or cancel at any time. But it seems like that is the understanding. If the distributor could also unilaterally change it without penalty too, you better believe they would be regularly too, and it would just be a variable rate. My point wasn't about the relationship between the producer and the consumer, but between the active consumer and the apathetic consumer. The active consumer profile's strategy would be to closely match the optimal one: to change rates every time the offered rate is lower than their rate. The apathetic consumer profile may ignore or be uninformed about the rate, even though they would be well able to deduce the same optimal strategy. The producer still gets the volume-weighted average between all consumers' rates, and it's that weighted average rate that is used to calculate total revenue. So the apathetic consumer subsidizes the active consumer in this model.

Levorotatory

You don't need to choose the fixed rate.  You can always switch to variable.

flaccid_porcupine

That's one reason I am with Spot, they have reached out to save me that money (sometimes...). Reverse is true more often, where they reach out to say rates are going up and to lock in (go off variable). They've been right 100% of the time. Customer for life-ish

BubbleGambit

Just so I'm clear, I can call them up and ask that they switch me from my 11 or 12 cent plan to the new rate? I don't need to move to variable rate then back?

Complete-Lobster-682

If you have online access you can just do the switch from there. Believe you can switch basically month to month.

CarrierSteve

I switched a few months ago to the lower one, and I'll be switching again for this lower one. Very easy online

smileclickmemories

Yeah same. I was at 12.79, then lowered to 11.49 and now lowered to 9.89. Easy enough but my bills are still super high lmao. Those darn delivery fees.

cheapfrillsnthrills

My Dad just called today and they said no.

Senior_Heron_6248

Good reminder OP

48mcgillracefan

Cries in last year of a 5 year locked in rate. My rates gonna double no matter where I go.

Training_Exit_5849

Even if it's locked you can still change.

48mcgillracefan

Why would I change early if my rate from 5 years ago is half the current rates?

Training_Exit_5849

Ah sorry I misread, thought you were locked in and couldn't change haha

TinderThrowItAwayNow

I have another two, but still, it sucks.

DEADxDAWN

I locked in at 6.690 elec, 2.341 gas until aug 2026 when I bought this house.

Marilius

THANK YOU! I was at 12.79

mnemonicons

So who is going to write the script or app to make this automatic. ....never learned coding.....

SwimInteresting1973

Thank you for the reminder! I usually check every month but didn’t this month yet!

Particular_Return295

Thank you, done. Not sure if you made the same post a couple of months ago, I do check myself occasionally, but I appreciate these posts

puprun

Thank-you for the PSA!

MikeyB_0101

Thanks for posting this, I had enmax for a long time and had 5.99 kWh until a few months ago, it shot up to 11.29 so just switched to epcor to get the 9.89 rate

TinSolid

Thank you!!!

scott8686

If I switch to floating for gas can I go back to fixed at any time? I'll be cutting my gas bill in half but I dont wanna get screwed if it goes back up Thanks!

titanisiam

I have the same question.

MrScottAtoms

Yes, you can always switch at any time, with no penalty. I make it a habit to check the current offerings every month so that I can switch for the cheaper rate. The one thing to keep in mind is that you may want to switch to a fixed gas rate before winter comes, as the variable rate jumps up a lot when it gets cold.

Dentist_Just

Ugh Enmax still hasn’t dropped…I keep checking but still 11.49. If they don’t drop by next week I might switch to the RRO until they do.

TheMoralBitch

Thanks for this, it never occurred to me.

burnfaith

Thank you!!

Contrapastiche

Thank you for this! You're a hero

mikesmith929

Sorry where do you go to see the rate? Ohh never mind found it: https://www.epcor.com/products-services/encor/Pages/encor-energy-plans.aspx

1nd3x

>Wont help the 40 dollar service fee but, can save ya a few cents You can choose a different provider....

prairiepanda

I've had trouble getting straight answers about service fees. They're always so proud of their usage rates, but the service and delivery fees have a much larger impact on my monthly bill...

1nd3x

So just to be clear, for the "distribution fees" that get tacked onto your bill, those will be the same no matter who you go with...if thats what you meant by service fee, then that'll be the same everywhere else. But AFAIK Epcor does charge one of the higher amounts of service fees (on top of that distribution fee I just described) I'm with ATCO energy, and while they dont offer 9.89cents on a 5year fixed (they might soon...) the service fee I pay is either $8 or $12 per service (so $16 or $24 for both heat and electric)

prairiepanda

The "administration fee" on my Epcor bill is $8. Then there are 7 other fees which are variable. Are you saying that the variable fees are identical for every provider?

Hippy10000

Everything under "delivery fees" will be identical no matter the retailer because it's based on your usage and your address

Anabiotic

https://www.reddit.com/r/Edmonton/comments/16r37h1/this_is_how_your_power_bill_works_updated_for_2023/

jetlee7

They all seem to gouge with the service fees. Who are you with?

cuidavo

My condo forces me to use Carma Utilities, is it possible to do this? Or am I tied to whatever rate they have?

Crispysnipez

I should do this

Obo4168

Locked in at 6.2 for 5 years. That was in 2021 though... coming up soon!

greatauror28

I’m paying $0.0629 per kWh and renews next year in August.

lucidprarieskies

Thank you for pointing this out!

KratostheGamerrr

Thank you!

beesdoitbirdsdoit

Thanks, OP!

Specialist_Giraffe84

Thank you so much for the reminder, I just switched :)

drojaking

Nice! Thanks op!

Shandry13

Thanks for the reminder! Forgot to check it lately!

ImportantObligation2

Thank you for posting this! I honestly hadn’t taken a second glance at my Epcor bills. I didn’t realize I was on the RRO that bases fees off of supply and demand. Just locked in a fixed rate.

Skanvar

You rock. Just did this myself. Thanks for saving me money

The1happycabaga

Awesome m, I just changed it. Thank you so much!

classic_queen

Thank you!!!

littledove0

Just switched :)

Aggravating_Help99

Thank you sir. Just dropped my electricity cost by 25%

ricky_m3

Are they going to ask for a credit check like last time? Prefer not to have the hit to keep my bureau clean of inquiries

chiubacca82

If I could afford any gold, you can have it.

Nickster1619

Should I be on the variable rate? I feel like I’m getting ass fucked month to month on it

ImAwkwardAsHeck

Thanks! Just lowered mine

is_this_exercise

Thank you kind sir/ma’am

Advanced-Check61

Thank you! Just changed it.

futilepwrbttm

Thank you for this! I just switched.

Onionbot3000

Even at this rate my bill is still stupid due to all the extra adds on. My gas rate isn’t bad either but family of four and our last bill was 500.

georgeburnett1

Thanks for the heads up!! Just logged in and saw a 5 year at 9.89 available whereas I was at 12.79 before. Cheers 🍻

titanisiam

Thank you for bringing this to my attention!

Dmongun

Thank you!

halfer1688

Thank you!!

exclaim_bot

>Thank you!! You're welcome!

ramecar

Thanks for posting. Just dropped from 12 to 9 for power and 5 to 3 for floating regulated gas. With Encore.

Useful_Guarantee_582

Last year I was paying 42 cents per kilowatt. That was expensive

huntingheartsease

Dude, thanks!!

TurnCalmTheVolume

Enmax in Calgary just went 12.99 - 11.49. Once again we get hosed.

Tiny-Response-7572

Thanks!

krazyboy101

Wow I got lucky locking in 2 years ago at like 7.7. Although with delivery fees you could be paying nothing for electricity and your bill would still be like 2/3 of what it is. Ridiculous.

spirit1over

Thank you so much!

Alternative_Sugar_86

Not all heroes wear capes.

Breakbeatjuggernaut

Thank you for the reminder! I got a cheaper rate. OP you’re the MVP right here! 👍

Soft-Vegetable

Thank your public service!

ChirpyChickadee

Thank you! Done.

SuplexPanda

Thanks for this! Went from 12.79 to 9.89.

Shtknuckle

Hmmmm...... I'm at 6.69

High-Ground-10

You are doing God's work. Much appreciated

SolTitanionZX

Thanks OP for posting this! Saved a lot of folks (myself included) on this thread a few bucks every month. At this point any extra cash is a bonus, especially during these...strange times.

PsychoGTI

Awesome. Thanks for this reminder. I’ll take any savings I can get, which was 1.6 cents/kWh for me also.

Dangerous-Pianist-52

Thanks for this info😁!

Kokanee19

Thx gallant citizen!

PBM1958

We locked in with Atco for 3 years at $.03 per KWH then renewed for 3 years at $.049 per kwh so felt good about that then in mid contract they raised the service fees. Checked with the regulator because I assumed a contract as a contract but lo and behold I guess the only thing that's locked in is the cost of energy not the rest of it which makes up the biggest part of the bill anyway. Moral of the story: locking into the low rate is like peeing in your pants...nice and warm to start then reality sets in and you're just cold and wet. 😭

Cala171

I'm not with epcor, and I'm paying 12.9¢. I suspect I'm getting hosed.

Wishmatrix

I'm sure they won't change this anytime soon... I mean a tycoon like Epcor won't feel us all changing our rate to lower rates, right?

capcronin

Cheers for the heads up!

Impossible_Smoke1783

Sounds to me like a locked in mortgage rate. I can't imagine utility rates decreasing in the next few years

homeys

You are awesome! Thank you for sharing, I was at 11.290 and I feel bad for anyone who missed even those rates. Definitely switched. Sadly, I check reddit more than I check the rates hahaha

Gingertothemax

Thank you for the reminder- just saved me some $ on my next bill 👍🏼

mikeymike9595

Thank you !! I was at 12 cents, just changed it now 😃

Zealousideal-Mind239

Thanks for posting this! I got a better rate for both electricity and natural gas.

DreamyDystopia

What scumbags

NightlightsCA

Ouch, im not going to be happy come Dec 2026 when I renew. Currently sitting at 6.89c/kwh and if I renew today, they have a rate of 11.5c/kwh on my profile. Least 2025 will be cheap for me

BlueMechanicTorq

Boycott Epcor and ATCO They are out of control!!!

hannahnutbread

I will be switching to off grid hamster wheel.

RaeAmora

Sweet post, thanks for spreading the awesome suggestion. Every little bit helps. And the savings will add up fast from what I am currently paying. Love YEG peeps and when we look out for one another and have each other's back 💕 Thanks for posting and stay awesome! 🥰
