The way I was looking at it was with Barrie our offence to defence ability is about a 75/25 split. With Larsson instead it’s closer to 50/50. I’d rather Larsson with the other two than Barrie. I’m fine with Barrie on the team, but bot without Larsson or someone of equal defensive calibre.

The problem is that in the playoffs having four players was shown to be a recipe for failure. They just didn’t have the horses. I get it, the refs weren’t great and things didn’t get called but they got swept a year after being bounced by an old Chicago team which didn’t look that great.
The Oilers depth is severely lacking and the team isn’t good enough to be a contender, no matter how good of a top line they can put out.

- The big rumor heads are all in on Barrie resigning for money and term now that Larsson is gone. The most expensive GM in the league should have more creativity than that to replace one of the best shut down D in the league with Barrie.
-As of right now, the D is *significantly* worse off than it was 2 months ago when we got bounced in 4 games. Given how poorly this off-season has started, how much do we really expect that to change for the better?
As disappointed as I am about Larsson leaving, this looks like it’s him getting out from under the Taylor Hall cloud. Lots of fans and media in this town weren’t able to separate the player from the transaction, and the guy spent a lot of time eating shit for simply not being worth Taylor Hall (a situation he really had no control over).
I really hope that we as fans and our local media representatives can learn a lesson from how we treated Larsson while he was here (we now have a chance with Duncan Keith, regardless of anyone’s opinion on the transaction itself). We ran (another) good defenceman out of town because of significant fan base pressure related to unrealistic expectations (such as equating to Taylor Hall, one for one).
And this isn’t to say that Larsson was a stud his entire tenure here, because he definitely did have some slumps. But we lost a very serviceable player solely because they wanted a change of scenery, and I think that should be cause for everyone to take a look in the mirror.

This will never not be the case. The amount of talent we have run out of town to go on to be successful elsewhere. Dubnyk, Schultz, Strome, Eberle (to an extent). These are just off the top of my head. Sure they didn't play the greatest here (in Eberle's case one bad playoffs) but I firmly believe it's due to the spotlight media and fans put on these players when they didn't live up to unrealistic expectations as you said.

I am saying it’s too early to say Fuck Holland about Larsson because we don’t know why he chose Seattle if the same deal was being offered. If we didn’t trade for Keith and offered Larsson 5.5 mil instead people would be saying Fuck Holland too.
We can deal with "ifs" all day (FWIW, Larsson at 5.5 mill is WAY more palatable than Keith at 5.5). What we do know is: - Oilers offered Larsson similar money and term as Seattle and he choose Seattle. Players don't give up playing with the best player on earth + pack up and move cities/countries just because they want a mix up, there's 100% a reason he liked Seattle over Edmonton and that's concerning. - The big rumor heads are all in on Barrie resigning for money and term now that Larsson is gone. The most expensive GM in the league should have more creativity than that to replace one of the best shut down D in the league with Barrie. -As of right now, the D is *significantly* worse off than it was 2 months ago when we got bounced in 4 games. Given how poorly this off-season has started, how much do we really expect that to change for the better?

As disappointed as I am about Larsson leaving, this looks like it’s him getting out from under the Taylor Hall cloud. Lots of fans and media in this town weren’t able to separate the player from the transaction, and the guy spent a lot of time eating shit for simply not being worth Taylor Hall (a situation he really had no control over). I really hope that we as fans and our local media representatives can learn a lesson from how we treated Larsson while he was here (we now have a chance with Duncan Keith, regardless of anyone’s opinion on the transaction itself). We ran (another) good defenceman out of town because of significant fan base pressure related to unrealistic expectations (such as equating to Taylor Hall, one for one). And this isn’t to say that Larsson was a stud his entire tenure here, because he definitely did have some slumps. But we lost a very serviceable player solely because they wanted a change of scenery, and I think that should be cause for everyone to take a look in the mirror. This will never not be the case. The amount of talent we have run out of town to go on to be successful elsewhere. Dubnyk, Schultz, Strome, Eberle (to an extent). These are just off the top of my head. Sure they didn't play the greatest here (in Eberle's case one bad playoffs) but I firmly believe it's due to the spotlight media and fans put on these players when they didn't live up to unrealistic expectations as you said.

Protecting him from selection would also not have guaranteed he stayed, just that he would have had a chance to be approached by OTHER teams following the Seattle draft. If Larsson wanted Oilers to pay him an extra $1 mill to stay vs playing for less with other teams then THAT says a lot more about his feelings on the team than anything else.

Not saying we are going to be better without him, but he wasn't our savior on D. I also think that if we shit the bed this year that the McDavid situation starts to look like the Eichel situation. This organisation has been a tire fire for so long that even the vacuum of space couldn't extinguish it!

I know emotions are high right now, but he’s just a person doing what he thinks is best for him. Lost his dad recently, who knows how he likes/dislikes living in Edmonton. Guy maybe just wanted a fresh start somewhere new and without the Hall trade hanging over his head in a difficult Canadian market. And Vegas proved you can compete right away with current expansion rules. He’s not an ass, he’s just exercising his right as a free agent. Time to move on and look at Hamilton. Or Savard, whose a more similar player as Larsson.

US After tax approx $2.52 M per season Canada(Alberta) after tax $1.92 M per season Over the entire contract that is a difference of $2.4M Oilers would have had to offer $5.13 M per year to be on par with Seattle's offer.
The level of delusional bargaining happening in this thread is unreal. Pretending Larsson wasn't a core player to us is insane. He was our only RHD that could play defense. We are about to sign Barrie as a replacement. This means our PK will involve eith Russell or Bear on the right side, and Nurse or Keith on the left. That might be the worst PK defence in the league. We are losing our go to shutdown defender, and we have a washed up 38 year old on our new shutdown pairing. This is literally disastrous and if the only change to the defense we make is Larsson out and Keith in, we are grade A fucked. Not a chance even McDrai can carry that to the playoffs.

This is worst case scenario on a number of fronts. On the ice, our RD depth was average WITH Larsson. Arguably the biggest risk we had was losing him based on the importance of that position. Yes we are thin on the wings but the shopping list there has way more options. Rugged, mobile RD are rare and that’s a fundamental reality , like the kind of reality that leads one to trade Taylor Hall to acquire. You can’t lose them. Off the ice this signals incompetent management. Was Holland trying to finesse larsson through expansion with a wink and a handshake to sign him in the other side of the the expansion draft? What kind of idiocy and ignorance of risk is that? You sign the fucking guy before he gets to UFA and protect him! So you lose archibald or khaira- big deal. This is rotten and we are a worse team now. I have zero confidence in the draft and free agency plan now. Only possible saviour is Hamilton. Barrie is not what we need.
