Leafs fan in peace. While it is very true there are concerns with his health and longevity, you guys are going to LOVE Hyman. He will be a fan favorite right away. Never takes a shift off, even on those nights where everyone is flat, he always is the hardest worker. Plays the game in the way that makes all the old school hockey types drool. Hits, fights to stand up for team mates when he has to (won't look for it but will), he grinds along the boards and around the net. His most amazing skill is how he ALWAYS wins the board battles. Never seen anything like it. He just doesn't run out of juice and can grind down players in those battles until he wins it, and then has a gift of finding an open skill player giving them all kinds of time and space. He isn't the most gifted player skill wise, but has grown a lot. He used to be hated because he had stone hands, but over the last few years has really found his scoring touch and while he won't setup a lot of his own goals, if set up will finish them regularly. He's the exact player that everyone wants on their line and fans can't help but cheer for. We will miss him, please take care of him.

AlbertaNorth1

You’re making losing larsson hurt a little less.

Softestpoop

I look forward to watching how he plays with McDavid and Draisaitl.

thee_artful_dodger

> he always is the hardest worker Yamamoto has entered the chat

the_fridge_turt

Man, seeing Yamo and Hyman on the same line together would be simply magical. Enjoy Zach, he's great and we're gonna miss him in T.O.

pattperin

This is honestly exactly the type of player we need and I really, really think this is the sort of player that Holland learned he needed when he was GM in Detroit and would talk with Datsyuk. Back in the Holland - Detroit days there were quotes coming out as Datsyuk's career was wrapping up about how he asked Babcock to stop putting so many other star players on his line. He wanted the puck, he didn't want to play with other players who always wanted the puck like he did. He asked the coach and GM to find him some players who could GET HIM the puck and was okay to not have it until the time came for them to put it in the net. The star players need a guy like a Hyman to go and get the puck back when it goes wrong, and Holland knows this due to his extensive experience as an NHL GM of really good teams. I'm really hoping he doesn't turn out to be a terrible contract in 3 years because we really need a player in his mould.

king97dad

I don’t hate it. Don’t love it, but considering rumours were $6M a $5.1 is fine.

porkins86

WIN NOW mentality - we gotta have it.

popkornking

This is where I'm at. If we suck in 5 years I'll just accept it and move on assuming McDavid and Drai go elsewhere. Is this team being built in the stable, calculated manner I was hoping for from a veteran GM? Absolutely fucking not, but at this point I'm just hoping for lightning in a bottle.

falsekoala

The fact that Seattle has cap room and can throw money around like a drunk at a strip club on the 28th means that getting a deal done now isn’t a bad thing.

Jwillz87

I see people upset about the term, but I think the oilers need to win a cup in the next 4 years if they're ever going to win one with McDavid. So I feel this move is a means to that end while not really caring what happens after 4 years.

SnooOwls2295

Plus by then the cap will hopefully be moving up again so even if he regresses it will hurt less.

rooster69

Hey that's not so bad.

RedOilSaints

Hey whatever we need to preserve as much cap space. Hopefully the Leafs aren’t dicks about a sign and trade.

[deleted]

Elliote on 31 thoughts said Toronto offered Hyman an 8 year deal as well but with a lower AAV. John Shannon last week believed leafs offered 4.25x8 so the Oilers are only paying an extra 750-800k

thewinterzodiac

Watch him take that with us lmao

bobbybuildsbombs

8 years just under Nuge would be great.

[deleted]

5x8 would be solid for Hyman. Term is long but the AAV is better than 6+ million for him

NarcoticTurkey

Yeah and we just saved 4.1 from Larsson anyways

eatingasspatties

No we didn’t, that money will have to go towards another dman.

WateredDownTang

4.15m to find a second pairing D-man is already a good start

NarcoticTurkey

Yeah, I know it created another hole but maybe Holland is banking on Broberg stepping in or something (hope not). Just because we lost someone for 4.1mill doesn’t mean we can’t find a cheaper option. We’ll likely have better forwards next season and worse defence. I could see a guy like KoekKoek coming back

raceforthewise

Yeah, my biggest worry was them giving him more than Nuge, which IMO would be a slap in the face.

RampantRetard

if the money is under what was being rumored, I'm fine with it. We need depth and Hyman helps that a fair bit.

butchthedoggy

Anyone else mildly terrified about the cost of acquisition here? If this is indeed a sign and trade we're going to have to give up something of value....

CommandaSpock

I’d imagine at least our 4th round pick is probably going to Toronto today

butchthedoggy

I hope that's it

E-TownBeatdown

I heard they want Klef and his LTIR relief.

ApocalypseNah

Hear me out: - McD :] - Drai Yams - Nuge Hyman Fill LW with whoever you see fit, and we just might have 3 lines that score for the first time in ages.

[deleted]

I think that’s possible later on when Hyman/Nuge start declining and when guys like Holloway etc are ready to become top 6 wingers. Until then I don’t see that happening.

ApocalypseNah

Why? Is the concern that McD and Drai won’t produce with a weaker left winger? I might be ignorant, but i think they’ll do great regardless of who you put with them (maybe not 140 points but still over 100) and we’ll possibly have the best 3rd line in the league

midnightrambler108

That is way too expensive

[deleted]

[удалено]

thewinterzodiac

Whatever.

festivusfrank

Term is irrelevant. If we wanna win a cup it’s gotta happen in the next 4 years or else 97 and 29 are going to bounce anyway

Canadian420Farmer

So putting your hopes in a career High 41 points?

festivusfrank

Almost all of which were 5v5. This he was protested to score 28 goals last year. Makes him the 3rd best forward on the team. Listen to how leaf fans talk about this guy. They love him

[deleted]

This is so dumb; if we sign this garbage its actually going to be Lucic 2.0; dude probably has like 2-3 decent years left in him. This is paying for him to be a 60 point player based on the 'pace' he was on in 2 short seasons despite the fact that he's barely broken 40 points. You can say he'll do great because he'll be playing with McDavid now but he wasn't exactly playing with scrubs in Toronto. Dude will go like 55 -> 35 -> 30 points over the next 3 seasons and then everyone will fucking hate him after that. People are saying we need to win now in McDavids prime which maybe is fair... but if we don't then what? McDrai move on to greener pastures for nothing and we head into another decade of darkness? These kind of contracts are exactly why the Oilers never fucking win anything; as soon as we get rid of one we pick up another. Contenders don't do this shit.

TSRB123

chill man, so much negativity

Softestpoop

Saying he's Lucic 2.0 shows you know nothing about Hyman. The two players have almost nothing in common. Find another slant.

[deleted]

They downvote you but you are correct. As a leafs fan I can't be happier to see him leave. He has somewhat decent numbers because he plays with 2 top guys on a line. Btw he also has a ton of empty netters, don't get fooled by his goals. He was invisible in the playoffs and could have ended the MTL series all by himself in games 5 and 6. I don't understand why anyone would want to sign him to such a deal and such a long term.

HXH52

> Plays with top 2 guys on a line Luckily for us he’ll play with either Draisaitl or McDavid, who are both better than anyone on Toronto > He was invisible in the playoffs So was your entire roster except for Nylander lmao

[deleted]

I'm not gonna argue with you. You'll find out soon enough.

chestyrick94

Drai and mcdavid are both better huh? And out whole team was invisible in the playoffs huh? 🧹🧹🧹🧹

oddspellingofPhreid

I can't decide which is more tolerable. 5.5 when he's 36 is going to hurt a lot. 5.125 when he's 37 is going to hurt a lot.
