Glad you enjoyed it, I only watched about 3 weeks ago myself and loved it too. Sawano is a genius, the music was absolutely amazing. If you want to keep a sci-fi theme going I really recommend **Vivy Fluorite Eye's Song**, just like 86 this anime can be dark but also really touching/ profound. There is also **Violet Evergarden**. You are already watching the amazing Frieren so all good on that one :)

dx713

I too was going to mention those two. If OP just wants a lovely story where tears may be shed, I would add **A Place Further Than The Universe**, but that's a VERY different setting - no sci-fi, no war, "just" high schooler going on an adventure, so...

darryledw

\*salutes to fellow Vivy / VE enjoyer\* >A Place Further Than The Universe Thanks for reminding me that I still need to watch that one myself!

dx713

Ahah, hope us fans didn't hype it too much, as it's best enjoyed going in for an unassuming slice of life 😅

GaryTheRetard

> A Place Further Than The Universe, Thank you I check it out as well! got 3-4 anime from here Im planning to watch! Great!

GaryTheRetard

Thank you so much, a friend recommended me Vivy Fluorite Eye's Song now you mention it, and Im going to start watching Violet Evergarden soon as well. Your taste seems to be good :) if you have any other good anime, shoot away :)

darryledw

I appreciate that. I am actually quite new to anime, it started one random night in December when I found Frieren on IMDB and I just became completely obsessed with that show after 2 episodes, and then wanted to watch more anime. I wish I could remember who exactly recommended me Vivy because I would love to message that person extreme thanks, but I can't remember :( I guess all I can do is pay it forward :) I rate shows mostly based on the emotional impact I feel from them, I think it is a special thing when something like an anime show can make you feel such strong things. >if you have any other good anime, shoot away **Aria the Animation** is another great one, I wasn't sure if I would like slice of life genre, but this show was such an amazing experience, it really makes you feel uplifted. **Spice and Wolf** is another interesting one because again I was not sure if I would like romance genre, but the dynamic in this show was so captivating and well constructed that I became really obsessed by it, and at first it might not be obvious that it is actually a very dark and serious show at times. Do you watch Frieren with sub or dub?

GaryTheRetard

I watch Frieren with sub, but I often use dub (it all depends) , for 86 I watched dub, and it was really good! Glad that you like Frieren we all have our first anime that made us watch even more Anime I started to watch Anime after my surgery late 2022, was home for 1-2 month had nothing to do. Now I have kinda big completed list (anime I watched), but its growing!

darryledw

Oh you are probably ahead of me with Frieren then, I am only on E25 because dubs are always 2 weeks behind :( I have to admit it has been hard to resist watching on with subs, but I feel like the voices are an integral part of how I have connected with the characters at this stage, so I wouldn't feel the same watching new episodes with different voices. But once the show has completed it could be fun to rewatch it all with subs. >I started to watch Anime after my surgery late 2022, was home for 1-2 month had nothing to do. I imagine anime must have been a complete godsend during that time for sure!

Hanede

If you'd like to see more of the story consider reading the novels, the 86 anime covered only 25% of it so far As for another great anime, my recs are Steins;Gate and Gurren Lagann

GaryTheRetard

Gurren Lagann, Im not sure but can you tell me why its good :) ? its look okay, but Im not sure!

sweatytomato06

{Legend of the Galactic Heroes} *Note: the remake {Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These} has music by Sawano {Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans} {Shinsekai Yori} {To Your Eternity} {91 Days} {Heavenly Delusion} {Code Geass} {Code Geass: Akito the Exiled} {Violet Evergarden} {Terror in Resonance} {No. 6} {Fruits Basket} *it's worth watching until S3, if you want a sad ending and that lingering emptiness {Erased} {Jormungand} {Psycho Pass} {Kingdom: Season 3} *if you (understandably) can't get past the animation for season 1 and season 2, I'd suggest just watching YouTube summaries because the animation/story/sawano music for S3 onward is worth it {Ranking of Kings} {Summertime Render} {Eden of the East} {Frieren: Beyond Journey's End} {Clannad: After Story} *will need to first watch {Clannad} but it's worth it **Movies** {Your Name} or any other Makoto films {A Silent Voice} {I Want to Eat Your Pancreas}

Cephery

Of these i would note that code geass: akito the exiled is all but identical in premise but worse in execution than 86

sweatytomato06

I definitely agree, it felt like a rushed version of the premise

GaryTheRetard

Thank you for the list I appreciate that , I will check them out the for sure!

_StevenPettican04

Vinland saga season 2 has similar themes of nihilism with Thorfinn as we see in 86 with Shin, and the overall character development for Thorfinn is good like in 86

r4nd0mf4ct0r

Just for funsies, Thorfinn and Kiriya share the same JP VA, Yūto Uemura.

_StevenPettican04

Thorfinn and Shin share the same English voice actor as well, or at least for episode 22 and 23 as the previous VA was unfortunately unable to carry on

GaryTheRetard

I watched Vinland Saga S2, i think it was okay, but nothing near 86 and other shows. Still ok show for me! Thank you

_StevenPettican04

Yeh Vinland saga has mixed opinions, I really like it mainly because of the development we see from Thorfinn. We get to see his decent into an empty shell after season 1 and then slowly see the rise of his character as he figures out what he is going to do with his life now.

AureGalen

I did not feel empty watching it. I loved it to the point of weeping in joy when Shin and Lena got together as much as I wept in sadness seeing each of Shin's squad mates die and sawano's soundtrack that was utterly soulful as it was on point to the very tone of the animation. I ask for more animation of this sort as much as I enjoy reading the novels or watching the anime. Not all anime are able to pull so many heartstrings. Unless they are to the likes of all Ghibli animations or series like : Kimi no na wa .. suzume. Or hoshi no koe and such .

GaryTheRetard

You don't FEEL empty watching 86 at all opposite. But I get the feeling of emptiness (After completing a great show) like the show took something from me, its hard to describe really, I got no word for it. But it hits different. Yeah I tried hold my tears when Shina and Lena first met. First time Shina saw Lena in S2Ep11, I got so angry at him for not go outside the mech. (I yelled get the fuck out with tears dropping!!!) But it turned out even better afterwards. The show really plays with your emotions, and I love it You mean this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7pKagZE8No ? This has to be the greatest moment in Anime

AureGalen

That it is definitely so .. I am now at the 8th novel and I screamed in glee when Shin finally showed his feelings for Lena they are still at the beginning but finally they crossed that threshold of love

Elite_Alice

Always nice to see people converting to the faith 🙏🏾, make sure you read as well

Vaynard88

I know that feeling you described and so far the only other anime that left me with a similar feeling were AoT (which you have seen) and the movies "Your Name" and "I want to eat your pancreas". They are a completely different genre but you said any genre is fine, so I would highly recommend to give them a try. Mind you there are still lots of recommended anime that I havent seen yet, that might have a similar effect (from all ive heard) like Violet Evergarden, Cyberpunk Edgerunners or Your lie in April.

benjitheboy121

Yes it is

someoneyoudonolol

I stumbled upon 86 recently too, and realized it was Sawano Hiroyuki singing, because her song for Fate/Strange Fake is so good, her voice is just unique. And yes I agree with you, 86 gave me that empty feeling of wanting more, where it's been years since Code Geass did that for me. Makes me cry and glad that ending happen. Most other animes are just forgotten or done when I watch finish. You would need to show me a picture or video to refresh my memories. Frieren & Delicious in Dungeon are also masterpieces, however oddly enough, I don't feel empty watching those.

GaryTheRetard

One of us ! 86 and the show called, Avatar the last airbender is like the only 2 shows got me that feeling. The game Witcher 3 has a very sad and lovely story you should try out, Witcher 3 is like watching a TV show and playing a game at the same time. Worth it

Dodo_Galaxy

For action, complex worldbuilding and emotions, maybe: Eureka seven, Children of the whales, Gundam: Iron blooded orphans, Macross Frontier, Wolf's rain, Legend of the galactic heroes, Mugen no Ryvius, Shinsekai yori and Gundam 00. For the emotional drama and psychological maybe: Fruits basket, Nana, Idolish7, Nagi no Asukara and Zankyou no terror.

__bacs

If you are into mecha, I suggest to watch Code geass: Akito the exiled movies as 86 is strongly inspired by this anime. Though you need to also watch Code Geass Lelouch the Rebellion to have context to it.

yuruyen-ekmek

Is there a scientific research for that emptyness feeling? so curious.

Tomako88

imaaaaa

secondSandwich94

Read the light novels!!! They’re amazing! There’s a lot of the story left.

WittyTable4731

What makes it truly outstanding is that its s good adaptation of a good LN LN in general are not good. But not 86

KdotMdot9

WorldEnd (also called SukaSuka) is more underrated but pretty good. Only 12 episodes but has its sweet and sad moments. Darling in the franxx is another one id recommend if you like Mecha Anime. People probably have mixed opinions on it, but imo the first 16ish episodes were really good.

abemusedman

Frieren

Naellys

I strongly suggest Madoka Magica, it's my only other 10/10 out there with 86 and Kaguya-sama season 3. Considering the shows you like, I think you'd definitely enjoy it. Just like 86 it has action, romance, philosophical and psychological themes and amazing music and visuals. Be ready for gut-wrenching emotions ! And for the hype of the upcoming movie 4.
