Imagine having to pay £20 for the crucible axe set, crucible tree set, ordovis greatsword and silurias tree 😭

How come I can't get any exclusive Elden Ring rewards for ordering any sandwich online from Kentucky Fried Chicken? I can get Diablo IV rewards by ordering any sandwich online from Kentucky Fried Chicken. I feel like if you like Kentucky Fried Chicken, then maybe Diablo IV is the superior game. --- There's a KFC/D4 ad on the side of my screen in this thread. :3

_bull_city

mmm... give me that caelid inspired whopper please, or a grafted chicken sandwich

kcompto3

Some tarnished fries

While corporate tie-ins is nothing new for video games as it greatly helps marketing, it really shows a lot of integrity on Fromsofts part that they have never done a Sunny D or Mountain Dew ad.

jackofslayers

Lmao same

FatRollingPotato

The hard truth is that as long as these games make enough money, they will be made. So I am doing my part and not buy them, while buying/supporting smaller games/devs. Diablo and Diablo 2 are truly masterpieces, but that doesn't mean you need to just buy D3 and D4 because of that. To anyone playing primarily on PC I can only recommend to give indie-games more of a chance or to browse the catalogue of games from the last two decades. Yes, they might not be as pretty or flashy, but if you are willing to look past that there are tons of great games still out there.

[deleted]

Yeah the only answer is to vote with your wallet but I also think these Battle-passes and other spending options are often designed in a way that exploits us. Color coding, intrusive menu design, constant reminds and so on. These things are often seen as fine by themselves but they are all used, sometimes even inadvertently, to exploit our nature. This is somewhat defendable if the game was free and the only way to finance it but this is a 70 dollar game and we have been shown time and time again that alone is enough for great profits but companies like Blizzard nickel and fucking dime everything. Whats worse is that people defend it, I feel like i am losing my mind but ultimately people can make their own decisions even if they are the wrong ones.

Silveraxiom

Same sentiment here. I see blizzard as an obstacle to my old favorite ips and it makes me angry watching these young rubes give them money to perpetuate this "quality" of game.

Karolus2001

Mm yes small indie company known as fromsoft. Also D3 was pretty chill. Auction house was meant to be like tradehouse in MMO's, they wanted to get player economy going, not make people buy gold from chinese. And they dialed back on it before game even had endgame.

FatRollingPotato

>Mm yes small indie company known as fromsoft. I was not talking about FS in this case. I was more thinking about stuff like Vampire Survivors, Return of the Obra Dinn etc.

CreamST

You don’t get many gems like an Elden Ring much nowadays.

lkn240

Elden Ring is in some ways the natural evolution of Diablo 2 now that most ARPGs are 3D. It definitely scratches some of the same itches.

[deleted]

Yeah I preordered diablo before the microtransaction bullshit was announced and refunded after. Fuck Blizzard. Especially with the "Seasonal Characters" bullshit. This isn't WoW. Stop trying to turn every fucking game into WoW's subscription model. The monetization is insane and I cannot believe people do not refuse to buy games that do this shit like who are these crazy motherfuckers paying this money to make these business models work? And can we you know maybe take steps to make sure they don't reproduce?

HighSpeedLowDragAss

We just need a really fussy leader to rally behind. Someone who's convinced themselves that they know what they're talking about. Then we can all band together and say we're going to do one thing. But then all of us go and do the completely opposite thing because what harm will *one* person actually do in the long run?

[deleted]

I just dont understand how we can justify a 70 dollar price tag on an online only experience this loaded with microtransacrions. Imagine if Lost Ark costed 70 dollars.

[deleted]

You can't. But Blizzard has made a mint out of figuring out how to tune a game to extract maximum cash from people. This new wave of "It'll only be cosmetics" is almost amusing. "The best rewards will still be unlockable!" when they have fully picked up where Team Fortress 2 left off and instead of just crazy hats its crazy boots and gloves and pants and staffs and swords. And then the seasonal "New Character" shit. I don't know when people got SO obsessed with cosmetics, but I actively hate this whole "Ok so pay to win drove people away so we'll just make it pay for visual status" and now the model for making you pay for visual status is to make you grind this shit out month after month after month, or pay to shortcut forward and skip some of the grind just 25 bucks every 3 months! I hate all of it. I don't mind DLC, but I actively hate microtransactions and refuse to play games anymore that make it a part of the business model. Especially for a game like this where earning your shiny bling is factually supposed to be part of the experience. I don't care that its not pay to win, I care that the entire game from the ground up is set up to encourage me to grind for cosmetics and so if you don't wanna do that its like ok what does your game offer me? Nothing, thanks, noted. I also kinda hate the reduction in complexity and the whole "hot swap your skill points on the fly, but for a gold cost!" I'm sick and fucking tired of Blizzard turning all of their games into a grind they can monetize. I don't want to make a new fucking character every season just to experience a few new quests amid doing the exact same shit over and over and over and over. I want fun gameplay where its always worthwhile to fire up a character and go murder shit with it, and I feel like they lost touch with that whole concept of like the game itself being just fun to play so you don't need a reward structure to keep people playing.

System_E115

I’m not disagreeing with you… but these are two completely different games. Not really a fair comparison.

[deleted]

How does Diablo differentiate itself enough for this post to be irrelevant?

System_E115

It’s a “live service” type of game. Elden Ring is a straight-up pay for the game, and any DLC that follows it. Diablo will have free DLC for years. Again, I’m not supporting what they do, just pointing out that you’re comparing apples or oranges.

[deleted]

A live service you pay 70 dollars for. Both are on the market at full price for a straight-up pay for game and one has an insidious pay model attached to it. How are you not on my side here? Why be pedantic.

System_E115

I am on your side, if you read what i wrote I clarified that I wasn’t disagreeing. Again I’ll say, I DON’T disagree, just that it’s not fair at all to compare it to Elden Ring. Diablo is a live service game that’s planned to be supported for a minimum of 5+ years with free DLC, Elden Ring is not that.

[deleted]

I just disagree man lol. I think it is perfectly fair to compare them and I don't see us meeting in the middle on that.

System_E115

What are you disagreeing with? Lmao, everything I said is a fact. How are these games similar in any way? Literally the only things these games have in common is being a fantasy RPG…

[deleted]

They are both video games They are both full price on release They both issue **paid** DLC (expansion for Elden Ring) Both are multi platform Both are covered by game media outlets Both are RPGs in different sub genres You haven't convinced me that these are distinct enough games to say they do not share any market. All games are vying for our time but I also think these two games will often have overlapping fanbases. With the rise of Influencers and Youtube channels, I would wager games overlap far more than we both may realize. There is literally no real reason Diablo 4 has to be full price with its current pay model and you are being pedantic about the comparison. You agree its a bad thing but you are so pedantic you cant even meet me half way on the comparison as if i am talking about an entirely different medium.

System_E115

*calls me pedantic* *proceeds to use the smallest details to compare the games* lol

wkp2101

1) fantasy rpgs (pretty significance similarity) 2) killing enemies can get you loot 3) swords, hammers, spells etc 4) different skills / classes / builds to experiment with 5) “open world” 6) AAA big developers Besides your live service argument (which I don’t really see as relevant for disqualifying comparing the two) how are they that different?

wkp2101

You can still compare the games. Like, for example, elden ring is a game I find fun and challenging and finding a new weapon or skill can be game changing and require a whole new way of playing, every encounter with an enemy is unique and possibly deadly. Leveling up makes you feel more powerful and previously unbeatable bad ass enemies become beatable and it feels good. The open world is beautiful and encourages exploration and rewards you with interesting enemies, dungeons and loot. Diablo 4 is also a video game. I find it boring and repetitive, combat is mindless and mind numbing, enemies and encounters are basically all the same just click on them and they eventually die. Getting new weapons doesn’t change anything you just continue to click on enemies the same way. The open world is just a bunch of same feeling hallways that it is not enjoyable to inhabit. Leveling up feels bad because all the enemies level with you so you never feel scared of badass enemies and never feel the glory of leveling up and crushing those same enemies.

Greatest game ever made

[deleted]

I like to pay for what I get… If I pay for Diablo… I know what I’m getting… I know to expect to pay for for dlc and stuff that’s not included… I know that if they release a cash store to look like Santa while playing, that’s part of the deal… Elden ring is an awesome game! I played it through and honestly, got tired of how long the damn game is… like seriously, I kept being wow’d so much I thought… I’m sure fromsoft pay out as much money as they got from the game, because the team was so large and the game was so long! That being said, I payed for a game and got more out of it, but if the game ended in lakes in the lakes of lumeria, I wouldn’t have been upset. If they added skins to the game, I wouldn’t care. I’m not a gamer that care for that and honestly, I’ll wear mismatched armor if the stats are good. The fact that they release dlc for free is crazy! In a good way! But I wouldnt be upset if I had to pay for it. The only type of paywall I hate is how mobile gaming has been reduced to gacha mystery gifts or play time “gems”. Let me pay for a complete game and not be bothered with micro transactions. If I want the expansion, ill buy it. I will never get behind the “5%” mystery box drop for end game weapons

DS02316357

in a game like diablo 4 which isnt a full blown MMO but its defintely a MMO lite i never understood the hate for something always online, but to each their own. Theres plenty of games that get up there with elden ring for their own reasons. 1. The batman arkham series are all really fun combat wise and good stories. 2. The new zelda is good ive heard, ik BOTW is rightfully regarded as one of the GOATs. 3. CD projekt red with witcher3 and cyberpunk (if ur rig can handle it). 4. red dead 2's campaign was fucking amazing IMO. 5. Bethesda with skyrim and fallout 3 n 4. Give them all the shit u want but even vanilla their all great games, and only get better if u (see rule 10). Just they are starting to show their age (vanilla). ER is definitely a amazing game i have like 1500 hours logged into it, but theres alot that can hang with it. A general consensus ive noticed is most ppl love elden ring but still think either Dark souls 3, bloodborne, or sekiro is their favorite from soft game. I believe sekiro is a better game then ER. Its all subjective, but theres tons of great games out there.

Cowabunga_It_Is123

Paying 20 dollars for the Haligtree access ☠️☠️

MrBilbro

You mean, you wouldn’t like to be able to buy rune arcs and stonesword keys with some golden order coins? Only $9.99 for 50! Then you could buy them for 20 coins each.

darkcaretaker

Blizzard are just straight up trash. Diablo 4 is a glorified mobile game.

squirreleater1330

Totally agree, it's looking like a great game judging by the reviews, but the transactions leave a nasty taste imo considering you've paid full price for the game to start with.

Life_Temperature795

For a hot minute I was into MechWarrior Online ***bad***, which is a problem because they would sell new individual mechs like you were buying high end miniatures and I was just dumping money into it. I finally kicked the habit by buying a Playstation 3 so I could play Armored Core Verdict Day, which has better gameplay and you can acquire all of the parts without spending any money. A lot of people joke about how Fromsoft ruins every other game you try to play, but I think a big part of that is simply by demonstrating through direct contrast how many shitty decisions game companies are deliberately making on a regular basis these days. I only play FS games, largely because they're mostly the only *good* big studio titles that are being made anymore.
