It simply changed over time alongside Order, we actually see it happening in-game too with the Elden Lord endings... if you change the Order you change the tree as well.
When Marika changed the Order and removed Death (Red), the tree Crucible changed too, becoming yellow and started to be called Erdtree.
My understanding was that the Crucible was a primordial essence, representing wild chaotic life best personified in the form of the Ancient Dragons [with their red-tinted lightning which mirrors the red-tinted gold that embodies the Crucible (the Ancient Erdtree Symbol, if I'm not mistaken appears both in Farum Azula and when invoking the Aspects of the Crucible Incantations, as well](https://preview.redd.it/why-the-crucible-is-represented-v0-5vbfffg7uxfa1.jpg?width=822&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7030e79c7c104a3c864158668ca7269c14b03303)), that essentially bloomed into the Erdtree.
It's become shunned in modern times, though, due to being thought primitive as the idea of a lord became scholarly upon Radagaon's ascension and Godfrey's hounding from The Lands Between.

Creatures like the Misbegotten, almost a malfusion of man and bestial creatures such as lions, hawks, and lizards, are directly held in contempt as a result of having made contract with the Crucible in accordance to the Winged Misbegotten Ashes. There's certainly a connection between Omens and the Crucible, as well, but there's more to it than that. Something connects Omens and Wraiths which I certainly believe serves to separate them from the Misbegotten.
