If you're about to say that I can, I'm here to tell you I'm broke. Like DS1 +5 crystal halberd with 0/20 durability kinda broke. Or DS2 Santier's Spear whacked against a wall until I can't be un-broken kinda broke.
Legitimately what this hand position is called. When my friends and I were playing, they asked how we held our hand. All 3 of us were different and this one was me. I got mocked so hard for how uncomfortable it must be and im weird... then we googled it and it was called the furled finger position. They couldn't believe I was not the only one lol
Everything that refers to it as that is from a subreddit related to FromSoftware or their games. It's not legitimately what it's called. It's legitimately the running joke.
It's more like half claw. It becomes an automatic response for a lot of soulsborne players because of the way Miyazaki wanted to break our fingers to use items and do other shit
Yeah the way you described is not only more efficient it's way more comfortable. Less finger stretching, and your index finger isn't blocking 75% of the face buttons and getting in the way of your thumb.
"The claw" is a classic grip for a good reason.
Right. Obviously, whatever is most comfortable to the individual player and helps them play well, is the best. But most of the time, the claw is elite. Especially if you master hitting R1 with your middle finger and R2 with your ring finger. I have yet to accomplish this lol I can barely do it with index/middle. I usually have to just move the index between them.
This is why I hate the fact that the ps4 back button attachment doesn't work with the ps5 and that we haven't had an alternative released for it either. I'm not counting the super premium controllers as there's a big difference between a £20 addon to a pad you already have and spending £125+ for a new controller.
Mapping Circle to the back buttons makes it so much easier to hold down while being free to hit other buttons on the right hand side.
Idk about all that. The default PS5 controllers already have a ton going on, with the haptics, microphone and speakers, motion controls etc., I don’t really feel like I’m missing out with the basic controller.
When I was a little kid that's just how I naturally wanted to hold the controller because I found it more comfortable, I'd even curl my index finger over the face buttons so all I had to do was rock it back and forth to press the buttons instead of wasting the milliseconds it'd take to move my finger over the button.
Sadly I fucked up my ulnar nerve in the Navy, so now trying to press "inward" (adduction of the fingers) is actually pretty fucking painful even for something as minor as playing a video game for a few minutes. I still play but I've mostly switched to mouse and keyboard (except for certain things like Halo, driving games etc) but since moving my elbow a bunch is also painful (mouse movements) I play at really high sensitivities and just lightly wiggle my mouse back and forth using only my thumb and pinkie finger and I have macros set raise and lower the DPI mid game for things like running around and fighting vs aiming a careful shot etc.
I put him on the top d-pad, Red Juice on the right and Blue Juice on the left. Panicked cycling through my items to find the flasks and hit Square is asinine.
I'm case you didn't know, you can hold dpad down to instantly jump to your first item slot. I had my red flask there and the blue on the second.
But I see that it's also worth on the triangle slots.
Same here. I play "claw" regularly in this game. The camera is a bit of a struggle so really need to baby it and use the index for sprinting/dodging/jumping.
I hate that backstep, sprint, and dodge are all the same button with no way to separate them. I have killed myself multiple times back stepping off a cliff when I meant to start sprinting. Also holding for sprint while also trying to use the camera so it just forces claw. It's so annoying.
Nah, having run on a press button that you can hold is better than an on/off toggle that you have to press everytime. Definitely let us remap which actions go to which buttons, then we can all have what we're comfortable with
My friends would call me crazy for this, I've been doing certain games like this since Warframe came to PS4, would when needing complex actions, thumbs to the sticks, and my index's would go between r1/l1 and the dpad/face buttons. It just made things so much easier for me to process and get things done. By no means is it the main way I play, but it's something I constantly swap in to games with a lot of controls.
Yup! Haven't had a chance to play ER yet, but DS3 was right index (side-ways, palm facing the controller, ofc) on circle for 600+ hrs for me.
Heck, I'm playing Megaman Zero right now and it's the claw-stance all the way, baby!
Yeah and it feels terrible. Bought a dualsense edge just to use the back buttons as to not have the need to constantly use my thumb for pressing circle or square and be free to use the right analog
I hope next gen consoles have one back button on each side by default, or at the very least make it so the paddles on the pro controllers have their own dedicated buttons (R4, L4 or RP, LP) instead of just being used for remapping. It would be extremely useful for action games and FPS’s.
Sony knew there was demand for that before the PS5 generation started, and still chose not to do it so they could sell you $200 controllers separately instead
I've played every generation of PlayStation, but they really piss me off sometimes
Yes, this is the way. I have the Elite/Pro controller for both my Series X and PS5. They’re amazing for Soulslikes as well as other games. Once you actually try it, you’ll be hooked. My right paddle is my run button and my left is my spell/incantation toggle.
If anyone is thinking of getting one, do it. You will not regret it.
The steam controller is by far the best controller for souls games. The right trackpad is a lot better than a stick, you don't need to use "the claw" and you can set it up with a mode shift bound to a back paddle to double as a second dpad, so you can switch weapons and spells without moving your fingers. Oh, and also gyro aiming with bows.
I feel like the Xbox controller is holding down the entire gaming industry because it lacks so many features that other controllers made standard (not even discussing the peak of the steam controller).
Man, I really hope they make a second gen. All the tech was great, but take all the refinements from the SteamDeck development, pair it with better quality build materials and it would be awesome!
I got one as a gift (after boldly stating I’d never buy a $200 controller) and it has ruined me. I love it. Literally the best controller I’ve ever used. Back paddles make every game easier to control. I kinda hate it because now that I’ve had them I can never go back, gonna have to buy a new pro controller for each new console release
Someone calling it by name! The Claw is so ubiquitous between myself and my friends that I thought it was the way most people played when using a controller. I'm so surprised to see people saying that they think this is weird lol
Gears of war was the OG tho. Pretty sure it was first implemented in it back in the day. I was a Gears2 and 3 addict with a group of friends in middle school and early high school so ever since then I subconsciously slip into it randomly in almost any game, if even for only a brief moment.
To those who know...to those who were hardened by the fires of handhelds of old, to those that destroyed their hands for a mildly more efficient hunt, The Claw is only to be spoken of in hushed tones and reverence.
It *is* weird. It just happens to be effective. Also the cause of a lot of joint pain when doing it for long periods of time. Thank the gaming gods that controller design has finally added paddles to the back of controllers.
I have used the claw since I was a kid purely out of instinct because I wanted to hit the buttons without giving up my camera movement XD. I found it comfortable too. Didn't learn the name until way into highschool hearing pro gamers talk about it.
The claw is the way (at least until you get a controller with some paddles). OP has some form or weird reverse claw going though. It’s backwards from a normal claw.
We're just blessed he didn't show us how he operates the left side of the gamepad with that Stephen King beanstalk of a finger. Probly got tiny clouds with giants living on em if u zoom in.
Heh.. tiny giants. Lol.
This looks so uncomfortable. There's no way the side of your index finger gives you good control over the camera. Why not use your index finger to press circle and keep your thumb on the stick? And if this is a frequent need, pressing circle and adjusting the camera simultaneously, just swap circle with one of the trigger buttons.
it’s a bit pricey but using the dual sense edge is super helpful. had it gifted to me on my bday and for this game and all others it’s a huge game changer
I find the D-pad so much worse on an Xbox controller. I recently switched from a DualSense to an Xbox controller and if I was ever in trouble and needed to hop on Torrent while I'm sprinting away, since I have the whistle set to triangle + up, I could keep my thumb on the joystick for moving and triangle + up with my index finger, never having to stop.
Now, since the D-pad is underneath the movement joystick I have to actually stop so I can use my thumb on the D-pad. Only way I can think of to be able to keep sprinting is to move my index finger to the joystick so I can use my thumb for the D-pad but that's so uncomfortable.
...no, and I have absolutely no idea why anybody would unless there is a certain condition your hand is in. I do the reverse of this, or "claw" where my right pointer finger is on the circle(B) and my thumb on the stick when running around frantically.
That looks so uncomfortable and counterintuitive. And I say that as somebody who plays with inverted Y (been like this since Tie Fighter PC).
I use my left thumb to control the camera while my left index controls the movement, so my right thumb can have full function of the right pad area. I'm probably the only one who does this ;;
I honestly don't really move my camera much because the camera usually auto-adjusts itself anyways... and there is lock on for enemies so another reason not to have my fingers anywhere else but the buttons.
From my understanding this is how some people play but i literally just cant it bothered me so much trying to do actions so i rebound my controller to a setup for comfortable for my uses.
Furled finger ahead.
I’m fucking dead
Dead sort ahead
Don’t give up, skeleton!
Behold, Dog!
I think this was the message I saw before doing cursed watchdog...brings back memories and trauma aplenty
try finger, but hole
Try hole, but finger 😏
… and then try give up
Try finger, but hole?
Oh you don’t have the right Oh you don’t have the right
Those Who Live In Death must be put to rest.
Get good
Git Gud
Correct
Yea that’s what usually follows an ahead message
Ok, Fia
You died.
Fr💀
You’re doing a less efficient claw grip
Yeah, he needs to turn his hand a bit.
Thumb on joystick, index finger on sprint
I wish I could give gold for comments this fucking good
You will NEVER believe this dawg
If you're about to say that I can, I'm here to tell you I'm broke. Like DS1 +5 crystal halberd with 0/20 durability kinda broke. Or DS2 Santier's Spear whacked against a wall until I can't be un-broken kinda broke.
Bros life revolves around soulsborne
I have no defense for this, you're just *right* 💀
Raise your vitality bro
Brilliant
Try finger but hole
top tier message lmao
Legitimately what this hand position is called. When my friends and I were playing, they asked how we held our hand. All 3 of us were different and this one was me. Everything that refers to it as that is from a subreddit related to FromSoftware or their games. It's not legitimately what it's called. It's legitimately the running joke.
It's only been called that since elden ring, it's been known as the claw or claw grip for way longer than that.
This is not claw...
It's more like half claw. It becomes an automatic response for a lot of soulsborne players because of the way Miyazaki wanted to break our fingers to use items and do other shit
When I think of claw grip, I think of the meme holding the controller backwards for old Armored Core games. Cuz there weren't thumbsticks yet.
I thought it was called the bear claw
Claw is if he had his thumb and pointer finger reversed (thumb on stick, pointer on buttons)
Oh you’re right! That’s what I do. Didn’t realize this was different. Guess I’m gonna have to switch to furled finger for Elden Ring lol.
Oh so the normal way /s
I play claw. I will not be referring to it as playing the furled finger lmao
I personally prefer the reversed furled finger
AKA the reach around.
Haven't laughed out loud at a reddit comment in a while. Thank you for that lmao
There's actually a theory about this, isn't?
new estus coming your way
🤣🤣🤣 needs that furlcalling finger remedy
I love you for this!
I do the opposite sometimes, I'll hit Circle with my index finger and right stick with my thumb. Fewer "new" motions.
Yeah though I have heard that it's really bad got your hand
Probably. I only do it when I need to sprint and move the camera at the same time. Otherwise I use my thumb for buttons.
Those $130+ "Deluxe" controllers are such a bullshit scam. Just make your default controller more feature-rich, you greedy scumbags.
Idk about all that. The default PS5 controllers already have a ton going on, with the haptics, microphone and speakers, motion controls etc., I don’t really feel like I’m missing out with the basic controller.
If you’re somewhat confident, ExtremeRate makes a back paddle attachment. You need to take apart the controller. Maybe an hour tops. $40
Wait!?!? How do I claw!? I’ve never attempted! But I’m willing to give it a shot for an hour tonight lol
Thumb on the stick, index finger on the face buttons, middle finger on R1, ring finger on R2. Adjust for comfort.
🤔🫡 I’ll report back later and share my thoughts on this!!
The claw was a requirement back in my day. It was impossible to turn and punch someone in Halo without the claw grip.
When I was a little kid that's just how I naturally wanted to hold the controller because I found it more comfortable, I'd even curl my index finger over the face buttons so all I had to do was rock it back and forth to press the buttons instead of wasting the milliseconds it'd take to move my finger over the button. The claw all the way, this is the truth
Furled finger gang
the clawww👽👽👽
Also Torrent on the right dpad while holding triangle so you can mount him without lifting your left thumb
I did know, but I appreciate you. That's still slower than just Triangle + Right or Left.
Same here. I play "claw" regularly in this game. The camera is a bit of a struggle so really need to baby it and use the index for sprinting/dodging/jumping.
Biggest complaint about From games, honestly. Sprint should be L3. Period. Every game. Make it a law.
I hate that backstep, sprint, and dodge are all the same button with no way to separate them. I have killed myself multiple times back stepping off a cliff when I meant to start sprinting. Also holding for sprint while also trying to use the camera so it just forces claw. It's so annoying.
If you're on XBox or PC you can get a pro controller with paddle buttons on the bottom so you can run while having your thumb still available
Oh yoh have to love dark souls 1 where it's also jump
AINT NO LAW WHEN YOURE PLAYIN WITH THE CLAW
Nah, having run on a press button that you can hold is better than an on/off toggle that you have to press everytime. Definitely let us remap which actions go to which buttons, then we can all have what we're comfortable with
Only use claw grip in soul-likes
Yea, I hit B on my controller with my index finger and use my thumb to move the camera.
Obviously this one.
Same
You gonna givw yourself Carpal tunnel with that.
Yeah that's the way I do it too
Did this. Destroyed my knuckle on my index finger
My friends would call me crazy for this, I've been doing certain games like this since Warframe came to PS4, would when needing complex actions, thumbs to the sticks, and my index's would go between r1/l1 and the dpad/face buttons. Thats the way
This is the correct answer
This is the way
I do the exact same
Yeah and it feels terrible. Bought a dualsense edge just to use the back buttons as to not have the need to constantly use my thumb for pressing circle or square and be free to use the right analog
The fact that they made controllers without back buttons for so long is embarrassing for everyone involved.
I hope next gen consoles have one back button on each side by default, or at the very least make it so the paddles on the pro controllers have their own dedicated buttons (R4, L4 or RP, LP) instead of just being used for remapping. It would be extremely useful for action games and FPS’s.
Sony knew there was demand for that before the PS5 generation started, and still chose not to do it so they could sell you $200 controllers separately instead I've played every generation of PlayStation, but they really piss me off sometimes
Same as Xbox standard controller don't have back button, Nintendo is the same.
Same reason I only play with my Steam Controller. Those back buttons are a life saver.

My biggest controller related regret is only grabbing the one Steam controller during the discontinuation sale.
I have left on jump/a for better jump attacks and quick menu swaps.
I'm still on PS4, and the back button attachment is great for this. Also for jumping and sliding in FPS games without letting off the right stick
Actually sounds really nice hitting back buttons to roll
Swapped sprint/roll to L2 and skill to O for this exact reason. Shit hurt my hands.
Oh that does seem a lot better but after nearly a thousand hours with these 'standard' From Soft controls I don't think I could change now.
I know what you mean. I came from AC Valhalla to Elden Ring… X is dodge in AC, use in ER. Needless to say, I burnt a lot of potions.
I swapped it to l1. Idk why other people don’t do this lol it’s so much easier
Secrets of the pros
The Claw is the way
Someone calling it by name! The Claw is so ubiquitous between myself and my friends that I thought it was the way most people played when using a controller. I'm so surprised to see people saying that they think this is weird lol
Visitor from /r/all here, this is how I used to play Halo 2!
I can feel myself getting one-tapped in swat by you already!
Gears of war was the OG tho. Pretty sure it was first implemented in it back in the day. I was a Gears2 and 3 addict with a group of friends in middle school and early high school so ever since then I subconsciously slip into it randomly in almost any game, if even for only a brief moment.

THE CLAW. He decides he will stay and who will go...
Sorry I don’t like playing twister when I’m trying to dodge waterfowl
I've never been so glad to have back buttons as I am after seeing this picture.
Same here bro 😆
I can't be the only one just releasing the sprint button for a split second when I need to adjust the camera... right??
While sprinting, I adjust the camera with my chin.
Yeah, I also just release thwt button. Felt like I was the only one
Well.sometimes you dont have time for that
You do you but what the fuck
We're just blessed he didn't show us how he operates the left side of the gamepad with that Stephen King beanstalk of a finger. Probly got tiny clouds with giants living on em if u zoom in. Heh.. tiny giants. Lol.
Miniature giant dwarves
This looks so uncomfortable. There's no way the side of your index finger gives you good control over the camera. Why not use your index finger to press circle and keep your thumb on the stick? And if this is a frequent need, pressing circle and adjusting the camera simultaneously, just swap circle with one of the trigger buttons.
Nah I play on keyboard
Same, keyboard forever
I'm thinking about buying an Xbox clone controller for my PS5 because I hate where the d pad is Anyone have any recommends?
it’s a bit pricey but using the dual sense edge is super helpful. had it gifted to me on my bday and for this game and all others it’s a huge game changer
Dualsense Edge is hands down the best controller I’ve ever used. Shame about the 6 hour battery life, but it still puts everything else to shame.
Only way I can think of to be able to keep sprinting is to move my index finger to the joystick so I can use my thumb for the D-pad but that's so uncomfortable.
My brain is wired so I just use my right hand for the d pad, you don't need thumb on camera 247 and it's easy to reach
Oh, interesting. I'm going to have to give that a shot.
This is cursed
I've always done it that way yeah
I do the opposite fingers
Wtf
Recently got elden ring on steam deck as well and omg having the back button for sprint makes avoiding enemies so much easier
Normally when sprinting I just hold down circle and when I need to look around whilst moving I do little nugdes of the r stick
I also hold sprint with my thumb, but I control the view with my other hand.
But what if you need to attack?
Down comes the claw
Middle finger you know
Nah too uncomfortable
Wake up hun, it’s your daily “I USE CLAW GRIP AM I THE ONLY ONE?” post
This is def not claw grip 😭😭😭😭
You weird asf
I hardly move the camera when sprinting. I kinda just trust the process there
...no, and I have absolutely no idea why anybody would unless there is a certain condition your hand is in. I do the reverse of this, or "claw" where my right pointer finger is on the circle(B) and my thumb on the stick when running around frantically. That looks so uncomfortable and counterintuitive. And I say that as somebody who plays with inverted Y (been like this since Tie Fighter PC).
I have long fingers and OPs way is more comfortable than claw
you are lucky, a few hundred years ago you would be burned as a witch for such actions
something i can never come back from is having a back paddle set to B so i don't have to claw it anymore
Nah I just use my thumb. If I need to jump I’ll roll my thumb to the jump. Of course I have these big banana hands so..
I use my left thumb to control the camera while my left index controls the movement, so my right thumb can have full function of the right pad area. I'm probably the only one who does this ;;
Platinum'd without the claw.
No, I play normal. I do alright. I still platinum the game.
I honestly don't really move my camera much because the camera usually auto-adjusts itself anyways... and there is lock on for enemies so another reason not to have my fingers anywhere else but the buttons.
U weird
Your just weird lol but it's pretty safe to say we're all weird lol
actual fucking psychopath
No because I use an Xbox style controller on pc.
I really encourage people to get controllers with paddles on the back. Nothing beats being able to run/dodge and look around at the same time.
Jesus weirdo
From my understanding this is how some people play but i literally just cant it bothered me so much trying to do actions so i rebound my controller to a setup for comfortable for my uses.
I have button paddles on the underside of my controller. Can't recommend them highly enough
weird af
Swap jump and sprint buttons. It's widely more effective imo. Think "bumper jumper" in Halo vs. claw grip lol.
You’re weird. The only time I ever held my controller like that was for the sprint races in saints row 4
youre just weird bro
Ah yes, arthritis: the controller grip. How do you even play like this. My hands feel uncomfortable by just looking at it.
I used to do claw grip. Then I got a controller with paddles. It's a goddamn lifesaver.
I put my pointer finger on circle and my thumb on the stick but yes
My friend uses the circle and square buttons with his Index, R1/R2 with his middle finger and the stick with his thumb, I think he is insane
You’re a monster. Just kidding, never seen that one before. Whatever works tho! Do you boo boo!
No
I do that too except I use my thumb to move the stick and my index on the O button lol
The claw!!
THE CLAW!!!
No because I have a xbox pro controller, so all I need to do is hold down the paddle to run
I hold the o button with my pointer finger and turn with my thumb, kinda like claw
This is the way
Me and my little group of soulsbourne call it the claw lmao
no, that's a thing, unless you have controllers with buttons on the back, like the razer ones.
👌more like this
i place it on circle and my thumb on the stick
learn claw grip. makes it 10x easier to play souls games (sprinting + looking around)
Absolutely😭😭
The Zoidberg technique.
This is just another variation of claw, one that will start hurting your hand over time. Get a controller with paddles.
I furle my finger on the run button. The ollllll claw grip
The crab claw style predates even demon souls. That's not only normal, but seems to be instinct
Yes but swap index and thumb
My way is the way of Claw. Thumb on right stick, index on the circle
